Wilma Rudolph Biography: Rudolph, a premature baby, was born on June 23, 1940, to Blanche Rudolph in Saint Bethlehem, Tennessee, weighing just 4.5 pounds (2.0 kg) at birth. She was one of 22 children from her father's two marriages. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to Clarksville, Tennessee, where she attended elementary and high school. Her father worked as a railway porter and did odd jobs, while her mother worked as a maid in Clarksville homes. Unfortunately, Ed, her father, passed away in 1961, and her mother died in 1994. Wilma Rudolph Biography. In her early years, Rudolph faced several health challenges, including pneumonia, scarlet fever, and polio, which she contracted when she was five. Although she recovered from polio, it left her with weakness in her left leg and foot. For much of her early life, she wore a leg brace and an orthopaedic shoe for support, but after receiving treatment at Meharry Medical College, she learned to walk without them by the age of twelve. Wilma Rudolph Biography Honours and Awards for Wilma Rudolph: Wilma Rudolph Biography Rudolph initially received homeschooling due to her frequent illnesses but later attended Cobb Elementary School in Clarksville when she was seven. In high school, she excelled in basketball and track. Still, during her senior year, she became pregnant with her first child, Yolanda, born in 1958, just before her enrollment at Tennessee State University in Nashville. She continued to compete in track in college and graduated with a bachelor's degree in education in 1963, paid for by a work-study scholarship program that required her to work on the TSU campus for two hours a day. Rudolph also became a Delta Sigma Theta sorority member during her college years.
