Social work practitioners employ three sources of knowledge: (a) experiential ways of knowing and evidence, (b) theoretical ways of knowing and evidence, and (c) empirical ways of knowing and evidence (Williams & Glasby, 2010). The Scariest Films Ever Made and How They Frighten Us
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
It was while I was researching The Book of Horror, an illustrated guide to the scariest movies ever made, that I first started seeing things.
Not the full Haley Joel Osment, you understand, but what we’ll call a seventh sense. I’d catch glimpses of something out of the corner of my eye, and my mind would fill in the blanks with spooky imagery because I was consuming so much of it.
It didn’t help that my son had just been born. Lack of sleep combined with horror movie overload is a condition I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Night becomes dawn becomes day – the full George A Romero – and reality becomes harder and harder to rely upon.
Driving past the local garage one evening, I saw a Creepshow skeleton caked with remnants of clinging skin staring out at me from the front seat of a car. Watching The Great British Bake Off, that beacon of primetime TV evil, I glimpsed a J-horror wraith standing outside the tent.
The cause of this – temporary – insanity was watching up to five horror movies a day for eight months as research for The Book of Horror, casting my net far and wide to seek out the most frightening films the genre has to offer.
But once I’d seen all the main contenders, plus hundreds of wild cards, the question was how to compare them: just what is it that links the grottiest slasher with the most sophisticated ghost story? With the help of my publisher and some horror-fiend friends, I developed a system I called Scare Tactics to analyse how horror films actually work.
By my reckoning, there are seven main Scare Tactics. And while most horror films use most of the Scare Tactics at some point or another, the frequency and intensity of usage changes depending on the subgenre you’re watching.
So Halloween might score highly on Dread (Scare Tactic #5) because we’re always waiting for Michael Myers to strike, but low on The Grotesque (Scare Tactic #4), because the killings are mostly gore-free – although he does eat a dog. The Descent, meanwhile, scores highly on The Unexpected (Scare Tactic #3), because of its excellent jump scares, but low on The Uncanny (Scare Tactic #6), because its bestial horrors could not be more, well, down to earth.
The seven Scare Tactics are as follows:
#1 DEAD SPACE
There are two kinds of Dead Space. Negative space is when there’s so much room around the subject of a shot it feels like something might jump out at any moment. A good example is the large expanse of curtain behind Janet Leigh in Psycho’s shower scene. Positive space is when there’s too the old crone lying in bed behind Christine (Alison Lohman) in Drag Me to Hell. A film that uses Dead Space really effectively is It Follows, which has viewers anxiously scanning the corners of the frame for the next incoming threat.
Film to see: It Follows
#2 THE SUBLIMINAL
This refers to all the sly cinematic tricks that film-makers employ without us noticing. Think of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’s slaughterhouse noises, or the unearthly breathing on Suspiria’s soundtrack. In The Exorcist William Friedkin uses buzzing insects to stimulate a fight-or-flight response, and there are several inserts of a black-and-white demon’s face (actually Eileen Dietz, Linda Blair’s stand-in) that occur for an eighth of a second, and couldn’t be easily seen pre-VHS. No wonder viewers thought the film itself was possessed.
Film to see: The Exorcist
#3 THE UNEXPECTED
From jump scares to plot twists, The Unexpected covers all the ways horror films pull the rug from beneath our feet. When used well, as in Insidious when the red-faced demon appears behind Josh (Patrick Wilson), jump scares increase our anxiety levels as we wait for the next nasty surprise. Meanwhile, sudden plot twists like the shock death of Charlie (Milly Shapiro) in Hereditary break a pact with the audience. If the film’s capable of doing that to a little girl, we think, what the hell’s going to happen next?
Film to see: Insidious
#4 THE GROTESQUE
Whether splatter movie or creature feature, The Grotesque is all about grossing viewers out with leaking wounds and stomach-churning SFX. And it’s no wonder: we’re programmed to find broken bodies upsetting, and watching people in pain makes us feel vulnerable too, hence why Martyrs is so hard to watch. Triggered by everything from arachnids and aliens to blood and brains, disgust can be a powerful tool, as Neil Marshall shows in The Descent. Here the slimy, sightless crawlers get battered to death in inventive, unforgettably squishy ways.
Film to see: The Descent
#5 DREAD
This is the awful feeling of anticipation when you know something bad is going to happen. It’s a common feature of the ghost story, where the house is clearly haunted but the spectres take time to reveal themselves. Dread can come from within the story itself, such as the many warnings about Hill House at the start of The Haunting, or technical elements such as extended Steadicam shots, which eke out the tension before a big reveal. In The Shining, the longer Danny (Danny Lloyd) wheels around the corridors in those insinuating, unbroken takes, the more we’re scared of what lurks around the next corner.
Film to see: The Shining
#6) THE UNCANNY
The Uncanny is that strange, slightly dreamlike sense that what you’re seeing is not quite right. It could be something inanimate, like a doll, seeming to move, as in the climax of Dead of Night; something normal subtly altered, like Banshee Chapter’s blank-faced human monsters; or something jarring in a mundane setting, like the old lady dancing behind Bev (Jessica Chastain) in It Chapter Two. Perhaps the best example if the way Sadako (Rie Ino’o) moves towards her victims in Ring. In fact, the actor was filmed walking backwards then the footage reversed, so it’s no wonder it looks so plainly, petrifyingly wrong.
Film to see: Ring
#7 THE UNSTOPPABLE
Unlike most films, which reach some kind of happy-ever-after, horror movies are more like nightmares, refusing to resolve themselves and let us off the hook. A good example is the end of Halloween where Michael Myers is revealed to be, basically, the bogeyman – an unkillable force stalking the streets in sequel after sequel. There’s also a sense of The Unstoppable in John Carpenter’s looping synth score, which keeps leading us back to the start. Ju-On: The Grudge, meanwhile, takes The Unstoppable to new extremes because its central curse keeps expanding outwards with no hint of how it can be stopped, and no closure for the viewer.
Film to see: Ju-On: The Grudge
So, to put all the Scare Tactics this in real-life terms, let’s look back at what happened to me. Seeing things out of the corner of my eye is Dead Space. The fact I’m hallucinating is The Subliminal effect of watching too many horror films. Suddenly spotting a skeleton as you drive past a garage is The Unexpected, and the skin still clinging to its bones is The Grotesque. Dread is driving past the garage the next time and being scared of what you’ll see, while The Uncanny is the incongruousness of a ghost appearing on Bake-Off. Luckily The Unstoppable only really relates to movies, otherwise I’d be in deep trouble.

Então, eu comecei a escrever canções.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
THE SEA EAGLE
MAKING RUGBY LEAGUE GREAT AGAIN!!!
As is well documented, and has been for many years, the patented Sea Eagle GF Preview using the following rating system:
0-5- reserve grader, should have to pay to enter the ground;
5-7- Competent first grader of varying levels
7-8- Origin/Test quality (UK and NZ only)
8 and above- All-time great
9- 10 Immortal status.
It goes without saying these are subjective views of the Sea Eagle, based on nothing more than what he has seen and witnessed for many years of watching rugby league.
FILTHY WRESTLING SALARY CAP RORTING STORM
1 Billy Slater. Was not suspended for the filthy cheating shoulder charge, against the Sharks. What a disgrace. All the Sea Eagle can say about Slater, is that the Sea Eagle saw him dropped to reserve grade and play for the North Sydney Bears early in his career, at Brookvale. If anyone thinks the curse of the bear is not real, there is no better evidence of it than this. It now waits for this great player greatest chance at glory to win a GF in his final game, to strike – like the stench of the Bear that it is. That said, despite being a cheating filthy wrestler, he is a great player. Height 178cm Weight 88kg Age 35 8.5/10. 2 premierships.
2 Suliasi Vunivalu – Filthy wrestler hanging out on the wing. Another great advertisement for the strength of local junior league. in Melbourne. Height 192ckm Weight 99kg Age 23 7/10. 1 premiership.
3 William Chambers – A strong and competent origin tested filthy wrestler. For who else, Queensland. His best is behind him, and Rooster Latrell Mitchell is now going better than him. But still strong. Height 190cm Weight 100kg Age 31. 7/10 1 premiership
4 Curtis Scott. A new recruit for the backline and noted filthy wrestler. But only had Cheyse Blair to beat for his spot, and let’s face it, after Cheyse’s efforts with the Eels and Manly, that is hardly a big hurdle. That said, he can play. Height 188 cm Weight 90kg Age 20. 6.5/10 No premierships
5 Josh Addo Carr. NSW origin proven and tested filthy wrestler. Played for the Tigers and was discarded on alleged lack of ability. He along with Tedesco, and Ryan Hoffman, is one of 3 ex Tigers in this game. Says a lot about how inept the Tigers are. Says a lot about how good Robinson and Bellamy are in spotting Moneyball talent. Height 183cm Weight 88 kg Age 23. 7/10 No premierships
6 Cameron Munster – The big thing for Qld as a 5/8 and a filthy wrestler. The X factor in this game who along with Cameron Smith and Slater can make it happen alone. Which is what you need to win. Height 185cm Weight 89kg Age 22. 8.5/10. 1 premiership
7 Brodie Croft. Untested in this atmosphere but is no doubt an up an coming filthy westler. But is a Queenslander. He will handle it. Height 177cm Weight 86 kg Age 21. 6.5/10 No premiership.
8 Jesse Bromwich – Very very very good. A huge NZ test forward and filthy wrestler. Players like this win premierships and lead the way and lay the platform. He already has 2 under his belt. Height 194cm Weight 114kg Age 27. 8.5/10 2 premierships.
9 Cameron Smith – Unbelievable talent. Looks like James Bond, but is a filthy wrestler with a repertoire not dissimilar to the Nature Boy Ric Flair. Melbourne usually win when he plays, and lose when he doesn’t That pretty much sums up his skill set. With him and Munster and slater combining the Roosters had better be on top of things. Height 185cm Weight 90kg Age 34 8.5/10. 2 premierships.
10 Tim Glasby – Filthy wrestler but Origin tested. For who else but Queensland. Will do it simple and tough. That wins premierships. Height 188cm Weight 104 kg Age 27 7/10. 7.5/10. 1 premiership
11 Felise Kaufusi . Queensland origin player and filthy wrestler born in NZ. No surprises there. Auckland is in Queensland right? A dominant game breaker. Height 189cm Weight 109 kg Age 26. 7.5/10 1 premiership
12 Joe Stimson. A typical Melbourne filthy wrestler no one has heard of until the GF. Queenslander. What a shock. No doubt will be an automaton in the Melbourne metronome. Height 189 cm Weight 104 kg Age 22. 6.5/10 No premiership
13 Dale Finucane. - Ex Dogggie.. Plays like one too except is now a filthy wrestler. Looks good in this forward pack. How did the Dogs let him go!!! Height 188cm Weight 102kg Age 25. 7/106.5/10. 1 premiership.
Interchange:
14 Kenny Bromwich. A Melbourne stalwart and filthy wrestler. Great player off the bench. Filthy wrestler. Height 183 cm Weight 105kg Age 27. 7.5/10 2 premierships
15 Christian Welch –Queenslander. Say no more. Filthy wrestler. Height 195cm Weight 105kg Age 22 6/10. 1 premiership
16 Ryan Hoffman. Last game as a filthy wrestler for the Storm and probably for life. Still, at least he is playing, which like the shoulder charging Billy the Kid, he also gets to play. Height 192cm Weight 105 kg Age 34. 7/10 2 premierships
17 Nelson Asofa-Solomona. A huge man and filthy wrestler. Comes of the bench because he can’t go the 80. Yet again another example of why we need a 4 man replacement rule, to weed out these behemoth’s that are making a lot of kiddies give league a wide berth as a sport. Height 200 cm Weight 115 kg Age 22. 7/10 1 premiership
Coach: Craig Bellamy It is definitely his fault his teams play the way they do. The rules allow it to be so and the referees won’t pull up the wrestling. So why wouldn’t he? He is a good coach, so why wouldn’t do something that is clearly successful. But he is killing the game, and the more he succeeds, the more he will be copied and the worse it will be to watch as a spectacle. Nothing to like about his coaching or the way his teams play, other than they win premierships ugly and regularly.
EASTERN SUBURBS ROOSTERS
1 . James Tedesco Ex Tiger who has come to the Latte sippers to play finals footy and maybe win a comp. great player. Origin tested. Height 184cm Weight 95kg Age25 7.5/10. No premierships
2. Daniel Tupou. A hugely underrated winger. Very good player, under the high ball and getting the job done. Height 196cm Weight 105kg Age 27 7/10. 1 premiership.
3 Latrell Mitchell The Rooster X factor. Makes it happen. Origin proven and tested. Kicks the goals. The one thing the Roosters need to do in this game is give the ball to Latrell in space. Height 193cm Weight 102kg Age 21 8/10. No premiership
4 Joseph Manu A young, exciting prospect. Could have been an All Black, except that NZ produce 100’s of players as good as him which makes his chances of breaking through that much harder. So he chose league and the coin. Now he is in a GF. Height 192cm Weight 98kg Age 22 6.5/10. No premiership
5 Blake Ferguson. A beast of a human on and off the field. Prone to schoolboy errors, and flashes of brilliance. The Sea Eagle considers him a liability on an overall basis. Unlike Todd Carney, at least he was not banned from Goulburn. Height 191cm Weight 100kg Age 28 6 /10. No premierships
6 Luke Keary Came from Souths, and lit up the game last week when Cooper Cronk was playing with one arm. He will be the play maker this week and Melbourne will have a plan to deal with him. A risk for the Latte sippers but what choice do they have? Height 179cm Weight 85kg Age 26 7.5/10. 1 premiership
7 Mitchell Aubusson. First player picked. They then work out what hole needs to be filled and he fills it. This time it is Cooper Cronk who is a million to one to play, so he plays half back. But he won’t be Cooper Cronk in this most key of positions. A real problem for the Roosters here. He is a defensive type with acceptable ball skills. The best choice the Roosters have for this nightmare of selections. Height 185cm Weight 96kg Age 30 7/10. 1 premiership
8 Jared Waerea-Hargreaves. The one exception to the rule that they never go any better when they leave Manly. He went way better (but it’s fair to say he would have won premierships had he stayed at the nest). Has 1 premiership already and in his second GF. Needs to aim up and put in. His form of late has been subdued. But in a game like this he can lead the Latte sippers to victory. Height 193cm Weight 108kg Age 29 7/10. 1 premiership.
9 Jake Friend (c) Underrated talent. Queenslander. Tough, talented. uncompromising. Height 175cm Weight 92kg Age 28 7/10. 1 premiership.
10 Siosiua Taukeiaho Say his name 10 times in succession eating a SAO. I dare you. Height 188cm Weight 106kg Age 26 6/10. No premiership
11 Boyd Cordner (c) origin proven and tested. Big metres, big defence, big motor, big heart, can play with pain. He won’t let the Roosters down. Height 188cm Weight 102kg Age 26 7.5/10. 1 premiership
12 Isaac Liu Workhorse. Some skills. Height Weight 187cm 108kg Age 27 /10. 1 premiership
13 Victor Radley Think Bunny Reilly. Think Victor Radley. Height 182cm Weight 92kg Age 20 7/10. No premiership.
Interchange
14. Dylan Napa A bit of goose at times, but is a Queensland Origin prop forward, which is what you want on GF day. Great off the bench. And is fresh from another suspension for using his head as part of his defensive technique. Unlike Billy Slater, he got suspended for that. Billy the Shoulder Charger got praise and sympathy. Height 198 Weight 113kg Age 25 7/10. No premiership
15 Zane Tetevano A big unit. Tested at this level. Height 189cm Weight 111kg Age 27 6.5/10. No premiership
16 Paul Momirovski. Did a good job last week. but still pretty green. Think John Rheinberger. Height 191cm Weight 88kg Age 22 6/10. No premiership
17 Ryan Matterson A young future star for the Latte sippers. The Sea Eagle has this feeling that he might implode in this one. Height 194cm Weight 107kg Age 23 6/10. No premiership
Coach: Trent Robinson . Already has one premiership to his name. His teams make the finals most years, and it’s his second GF .He has the brains to come up with a plan to beat the filthy wrestlers from the Storm. Does he have the players to execute it?
Sea Eagle Prediction
Hard to see a team with Billy Slater, Cameron Munster, Cameron Smith, backed up by the Bromwich brothers, Will Chambers and a few Queensland Origin forwards, getting beaten. It’s even harder to imagine it, when Cooper Cronk won’t be guiding Easts around the Park.
The Sea Eagle will be supporting the Roosters, but it looks like a Storm victory, more is the pity. The Storm are filth. No good can come from them winning this one. None whatsoever.
This is the third GF in a row for the Storm. The last side to do that was the Roosters (2002-2004), and before them Manly (95-97) and before them the Eels (81-83). Both Manly and the Roosters were 1 from 3. The Eels were 3 from 3. No team is 2 from 3. The Storm are 1 from 2 trying to go 2 from 3. This is the main statistic that should give Roosters supporters some cause to dream. It seems it is very hard to play 3 GF’s in a row and win at least 2 of them. Add to that, the fact that the Storm are trying to be the first team to go back to back premiership winners since the Broncos in 92/93 and you can see how difficult the task is for the Storm.
Go the Roosters! (and for the Sea Eagle to say that, after years of spraying the Latte sippers, is something in itself!).

Então, eu comecei a escrever canções.
