Civil War Tales - The Battle of Rich Mountain
Rich Mountain and Laurel Hill were two strategic peaks in the Allegheny Mountains. Between these peaks, the Parkersburg-Staunton turnpike, leading from the Shenandoah Valley, passed through the town of Beverly. Here, the road forked. The left fork led to Parkersburg on the Ohio River. The right fork followed a northwest route as it passed through Philippi to Grafton. The route to Grafton offered easy access to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, leading to the Ohio River at Wheeling. Rich Mountain and Laurel Hill's strategic importance was not lost on the Confederates or the Federals. Following the Battle of Philippi, General Richard S. Garnett replaced Colonel George Porterfield as commander of Confederate forces in Northwestern Virginia. He immediately ordered the fortification of Rich Mountain and Laurel Hill to protect this vital supply route from the Federals. Garnett placed 3,500 troops at Laurel Hill, the point at which he expected an assault. The position was very well fortified and covered every approach to Laurel Hill. Garnett sent Colonel Jonathan M. Heck to fortify Rich Mountain. Colonel Heck entrenched at the western base of Rich Mountain. Breastworks on each side of the turnpike were constructed. The area in front of the breastworks was cleared in preparation for a frontal attack by the federals, affording a clear field of fire. In the meantime, reinforcements arrived at Laurel Hill. Garnett sent the Twentieth Virginia, commanded by Colonel John Pegram, to reinforce Camp Garnett. Outranking Colonel Heck, Pegram assumed command at Camp Garnett. At his disposal was a force numbering 1,300 men. McClellan’s original plans called for a movement on Richmond through the Kanawha Valley. After numerous consultations, McClellan opted for a movement against Garnett. On July 9, he moved his base of operations to Roaring Creek Flats, two miles west of Camp Garrett, and sent General Thomas A. Morris to keep the Confederates occupied at Laurel Hill. The Rich Mountain Battlefield For five days, from July 7 to July 11, 1861, Morris’ forces engaged in a series of minor skirmishes with Garnett’s men in and around the small town of Belington. These skirmishes, although minor, accomplished the desired effect of keeping Garnett from reinforcing Pegram at Rich Mountain. McClellan, meanwhile, was hesitant to order a frontal assault on Camp Garnett. Although there was a high probability of success, casualties would likely be high. He did not have to make that decision thanks to 21-year-old David Hart. Hart arrived, seeking permission to visit his father’s home atop Rich Mountain. He was taken to General William S. Rosecrans for interrogation. Hart told Rosecrans of an old road, hardly used, that would lead around the left flank of the Confederates and to a dirt road a short distance from the Hart home. Rosecrans took this information, along with Hart, to General McClellan. It took some convincing, but McClelland finally agreed to Rosecrans’ plan. At dawn, the brigade, led by Colonel Frank Lander and composed of 1,900 Indiana and Ohio troops, left camp on a challenging march to the Hart farm. The soldiers made their way through brush and thickets and crossed ravines. Heavy rains fell from six that morning until eleven o’clock. The march took much longer than expected. Finally, shortly after eleven, the column reached the dirt road that led to the Hart farm. As the column began moving along the dirt road, Rosecrans was unaware of two things. When he did not hear the firing he expected, McClellan became concerned and recalled the flank attack. He sent Sergeant David Wolcott of the First Ohio Cavalry to recall the column. Confederate pickets, however, captured Wolcott, and Rosecrans did not receive the message. Colonel Pegram knew the Federals were executing a flank march. To guard against such a maneuver, Pegram placed two companies near the summit, almost two miles to his rear the previous night, to fortify the position. When he learned of the Federal plans, he sent two more companies and an artillery piece to reinforce the summit, increasing the Confederate force to three hundred men. This left Pegram one thousand men at Camp Garnett to face General McClellan. McClelland, with four thousand troops, could have easily overwhelmed Pegram. Assuming the troops had been defeated at Rich Mountain, McClellan ordered his line back to Roaring Creek Flats. General William Rosecrans Meanwhile, after passing the crest of the hill and about a quarter mile from the Hart farm, the Federal column began to take fire from enemy pickets. Sergeant James Taggart fell, and Captain Christopher Miller was severely wounded. The Confederate column opened fire as the Federals emerged into open ground. The Federals commenced the attack. The Confederates put up a gallant defense, but it was not enough. Rosecrans ordered a charge down the hill toward the Hart farm as the Nineteenth Ohio provided a covering volley. After a second volley by the Nineteenth, the entire force charged, and the overpowered Confederates ran. The brief battle was over. Rosecrans did not pursue so his troops could prepare for a counterattack, which never came. Colonel Pegram was on his way to Hart Farm to check on the battle's progress when he encountered retreating men. Pegram tried to rally the men but was unsuccessful. As he made his way to Camp Garrett, Pegram fell from his horse and suffered a minor injury. When he arrived at the camp, he consulted with his officers. With Federals at his front and rear, Pegram abandoned Camp Garnett. Because of his injuries, Pegram relinquished command to Colonel Heck, who issued orders for the retreat. It was a rainy night as the column retreated. The movement was led by Captain R.D. Lilley of the 25th Virginia and accompanied at the front by map maker of the 25th Virginia, Jedediah Hotchkiss (destined to become one of Stonewall Jackson’s chief aides). Before the retreat was completed, Pegram decided to resume command. Word was sent up the line to halt the column until Pegram came to the front. However, the men led by Captain Lilley and Hotchkiss never got the message and continued to Beverly. Lilley continued the retreat through Huttonsville to Cheat Mountain. Hearing of the defeat at Rich Mountain, Garnett knew he was in a precarious position at Laurel Hill. Leaving his tents up and fires burning, Garnett quietly slipped away and moved south on the Parkersburg- Staunton turnpike. When informed erroneously that the Federals blocked his path at Beverly, Garnett changed to a northeasterly route into the Cheat River Valley to avoid them. General McClellan headquarters. Meanwhile, Pegram led his column to a point three miles south of Leadville (near present-day Elkins). Pegram received some disturbing news: Garnett had retreated from Laurel Hill. Pegram’s troops were hungry, exhausted, and demoralized. He saw surrender as the only option. At midnight, he sent a message to McClellan asking for terms of surrender. Pegram’s force surrendered its arms at Beverly, and McClelland issued orders for delivering food and provisions to Pegram’s famished command, consisting of five hundred sixty men, including 33 officers. Garnett, meanwhile, was having problems. His ruse had been discovered. General Thomas A. Morris had begun a pursuit with his Indiana brigade. The poor roads slowed travel to a crawl. The Confederates chopped down trees to slow the federal advance. In addition, heavy rains turned the road into mud, slowing the advance and bogging down the wagon trains. Equipment left behind easily showed the direction of the march. With the rains swelling the streams, the Confederates crossed the Cheat River at Kaler’s Ford. On July 13, 1863, the Federals finally caught up with the Confederates at Shaver’s Fork of the Cheat River and began their attack. From there, the conflict continued through the first and second crossings of Corrick’s Ford. The battle raged as the Seventh Indiana, led by Colonel Dumont, crossed the river and made a charge on the Confederate battery. The Southerners, low on ammunition, retreated. Garnett, hearing the battle raging, rode back to Corrick’s Ford. Upon seeing his men in retreat, he attempted to rally them. He made an inviting target on horseback, and soon, a bullet struck Garnett. He fell from his horse, becoming the first General killed in the Civil War. Under Federal guard, Garnett’s body was transferred to relatives in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was buried. He was later re-interred next to his wife in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. McClellan chose not to pursue. Nine days later, on July 22, 1861, following the Union disaster at First Bull Run the previous day, McClellan was recalled to Washington, and General Rosecrans assumed command in Western Virginia. The events in Philippi, Rich Mountain, Laurel Hill, and Corrick’s Ford were instrumental in the decision to elevate McClelland to command of the Army of the Potomac. Federal control of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Parkersburg-Staunton turnpike made it more difficult for Confederates to supply their units. Leaders meeting for the Wheeling conventions could now breathe a bit easier knowing Western Virginia was under Union control. It would not be long before a new state was born. This is the story of how he rose in the ranks, making countless of enemies along the way. This is also the story of how they tried to kill him, but failed. I’ve never heard of Danny Greene, but the movie paints a nice realistic picture of the 1970s. This is not a pleasant world, but one where everyone is trying to get their piece of the cake. Danny himself is a hard one to figure out, is he good, is he bad? The one moment he helps out a friend in need, the next… he is killing people. I kinda like the fact that he is a person with both sides to him, allowing us to make up our own mind about him. Life is never as simple as most movies would like us to think it is. The movie itself is a little messy, and I had expected a bit more from the cast, but of course, this is a movie based on actual events and characters, and of course that means that they can’t change too much. In minor roles we find Val Kilmer and Christopher Walken, both excellent actors that tend to make quirky and interesting characters, but not so much here. Last words… a solid movie that gives us some insight into a man who really lived and breathed. It has some heart, for sure, but ain’t all that interesting when it comes down to it. I probably won’t ever see it a second time, but I definitely survived seeing it once.

Civil War Tales - Philippi, the First Land Battle
(Publisher’s Note: This is the first of a series of historical accounts composed by local educator and historian Pete Chacalos. Pete, a former Ohio County Board of Education member and a retired science teacher who spent more than three decades in classrooms, will offer LEDE readers tales about how the Civil War impacted areas that would become the 35th state in the Union, West Virginia, on June 20th, 1863.) Fort Sumter fell on April 14, 1861. The next day, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for 75,000 state militiamen to put down the rebellion. Thousands in the Midwest immediately volunteered. In Ohio, Governor William Dennison lobbied George McClellan to assume command of Ohio’s militia forces. McClellan accepted on April 23, 1861. Governor Dennison sent McClellan to Columbus to evaluate the state of Ohio’s arsenal. McClellan, accompanied by Jacob Cox, found crates of rusted muskets, mildewed harnesses, and some inoperable cannons. This did not deter him from creating an exceptional force of volunteers. McClellan’s efforts were noticed in Washington. The buildup of forces in the Midwest following Sumter's fall was so swift it outpaced the existing structure. This lack of organization was evident when, on May 3, 1861, the Union War Department issued General Order Number 14 to consolidate regiments from Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois into the Department of the Ohio. Later, regiments from Missouri would be added. On this day, McClellan rejoined the Army, was promoted to Major General, and assigned to command the Department of the Ohio, headquartered in Cincinnati. Meanwhile, Robert E. Lee had cast his lot with the Confederacy. He was appointed to command military forces in Virginia. On May 4, 1861, he sent Colonel George Porterfield to Grafton to organize troops that were being raised there. Grafton was a key strategic point in western Virginia, as it was at the junction of the Parkersburg-Grafton Railroad and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Lee, however, did not foresee the amount of resentment that the people west of the Alleghenies had for the so-called elitist populace of the Tidewater region. The few men who rallied to the Confederate cause had little or no training. Ammunition was lacking, and some of the few companies raised in nearby towns didn’t have weapons. As Porterfield would later say in his report: “This force is not only deficient in drill but ignorant, both officers and men, of the most ordinary duties of the soldier. With efficient drill officers, they might be made effective, but I have to complain that the field officers sent to command these men are of no assistance to me and are, for the most part, as ignorant of their duties as the company officers, and they as ignorant as the men.” Col. Benjamin Franklin Kelley Porterfield received intelligence that Federal troops were approaching from Wheeling. Realizing that he could not hold Grafton (a pro-Union town) with the 800 troops at his disposal, Porterfield withdrew 25 miles south to Philippi (a secessionist town). As he retreated, Porterfield burned a few bridges to slow any pursuit from the federals. On Sunday, May 26, General McClelland received word that bridges on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in western Virginia had been burned the previous night. The B&O was a vital link between Washington and the Midwest. It provided an easy path through the Appalachian Mountains but passed through Confederate “territory” in three places. McClellan launched an invasion into Virginia to protect against the B&O and the loyal citizens in western Virginia. He ordered the 1st Virginia, the 9th Indiana, the 16th Ohio, and some companies from the 2nd Virginia to advance from Wheeling towards Fairmont and the 14th and 18th Ohio to advance from Parkersburg towards Grafton. Early on May 27, the 1st Virginia, commanded by Colonel Benjamin Franklin Kelley, left Camp Carlile on Wheeling Island and marched across the Suspension Bridge to the B&O depot. On May 29, the train picked up the regiments of the 16th Ohio at Camp Buffalo on the way to Fairmont. As Kelley moved east on one branch of the B&O Railroad, he was under orders to take no risks. If confronted by a force superior in manpower or firepower, Kelley was to observe and send for support. Kelley’s main objective was to protect the railroad and bridges on the way to Fairmont. The Battle of Philippi resulted in the retreat of Confederate forces to avoid capture by Union soldiers. The casualty totals - four Union and 26 Confederate - were considered to be light at that time. The 14th and 18th Ohio, based in Marietta, crossed the Ohio River, marched to Parkersburg, and boarded a train heading east towards Grafton. In Indianapolis, Brigadier General Thomas A. Morris received orders to prepare for a move, with the 6th and 7th Indiana, to Grafton. General Morris arrived at Grafton on the evening of June 1. He met with Colonel Kelley, who had organized an expedition against the Confederates at Philippi that night. After conferring with Kelley, Morris determined that the attack would occur the following night. At 9 a.m. on June 2, four regiments, organized into two divisions, left Grafton and headed for Philippi. One division (the left column) of 1,600 troops, under the command of Colonel Kelley, consisted of six companies of Kelley’s First Virginia, six companies of Colonel Irvine’s Sixteenth Ohio, and nine companies of Colonel Milroy’s Ninth Indiana. The left proceeded east on the B&O Railroad for six miles. This was intended to give the illusion of an advance on Harper’s Ferry. The men then disembarked and marched (on a little traveled road) southeast the remaining twenty-five miles to Philippi. The march was regulated, so the column arrived at its designated spot, behind the town (south) as close to 4 a.m. as possible. Colonel Ebenezer Dumont (commanding the right column) proceeded by rail to Webster with a force of 1,400, including the eight companies of his Seventh Indiana regiment. At Webster, Dumont was joined by Colonel Steedman and five companies of the Fourteenth Ohio, along with two field pieces, and by Colonel Crittenden, with six companies of his regiment, the Sixth Indiana. From Webster, the right column marched to Philippi, so it arrived in front of the town (north) at 4 a.m. The objective of Dumont’s column was to divert attention until the attack made by Colonel Kelley and to aid him if resistance was offered. Once the two columns joined, the force was to be under the command of Colonel Kelley. Both columns advanced on Philippi through torrential rains. Porterfield was aware of the approaching Federals. After conferring with his officers that evening, Porterfield decided the only hope of avoiding capture was a retreat (at daybreak) to Beverly. Most likely due to the storm and a lack of training, the Confederates had not set pickets that night to warn of any approach by the enemy. The covered bridge in Philippi was constructed in 1852 and is the oldest and longest in the state of West Virginia. Colonel Dumont’s column arrived on a ridge east of the town known as Talbot Hill. An artillery battery was placed here to support the column as it crossed the covered bridge into town. Dumont was to wait for a signal (a single shot) from Colonel Kelley indicating his troops were in place before commencing the bombardment. At this point, Kelley should have been circling around town and approaching from the south. The plans, however, had already gone awry. Kelly’s column had taken a wrong fork in the road and ended up on the same side of town as Colonel Dumont’s men. As Kelley’s column approached Philippi, it passed by the home of Matilda Humphreys. Mrs. Humphreys sent her son to Philippi to warn of the approaching Federals. He was immediately captured. Mrs. Humphreys fired a single shot from a pistol at the men capturing her son. Hearing the shot, Dumont ordered the battery to commence firing to support his advancing troops. Colonel Porterfield ordered two companies to prevent the Federals from crossing the covered bridge. They put up a light resistance, but it was too late. Colonel Frank W. Lander, seeing this resistance, made a mad dash (on horseback) down the hill through heavy underbrush to rally the men in their attempt to enter the town. At the same time, Kelley was advancing into town. Upon seeing two Federal columns entering the town, the Confederate forces panicked and ran. Kelley and Lander entered the town simultaneously. As he led his men through the town, Kelley was shot through the chest and fell from his horse. It was reported by Brigadier General Thomas A. Morris, in his report to the adjutant general’s office, that Colonel Lander personally captured the man who shot Kelley. Kelley’s wound was thought to be mortal. The June 7 edition of the Richmond Enquirer reported Kelley’s death. Kelly, however, would recover and go on to command the Department of West Virginia. Pete Chacalos taught science for over 30 years at Wheeling Park High School and is an avid historian of the Civil War era of America. The Confederates withdrew southward and reached Beverly that evening. The next evening, they withdrew even further to Huttonsville. They remained there until General Richard Garnett arrived with reinforcements to relieve Colonel Porterfield. On July 4, A court of inquiry convened at the request of Porterfield. He was praised for his coolness and courage during the retreat but was censured for not taking precautionary measures beforehand. He never held command again. There were conflicting reports on the number of casualties. Some indicated dozens killed and wounded, while others reported none killed. It can be said, however, that casualties were extremely light considering the carnage that was to come. Had Kelly’s column not gotten lost, the Confederates, running south as fast as they could, would have likely been captured. Hence, the Battle of Philippi (more a skirmish than a battle) became known as The Philippi Races. Today we remember the passing of John Avery Lomax I who died January 26, 1948 in Greenville, Mississippi
John Avery Lomax I was an American teacher, a pioneering musicologist, and a folklorist who did much for the preservation of American folk music. He was the father of Alan Lomax (also a distinguished collector of folk music) and Bess Lomax Hawes.
The Lomax family originally came from England with William Lomax, who settled in Rockingham County in what was then "the colony of North Carolina." John Lomax was born in Goodman in Holmes County in central Mississippi, to James Avery Lomax and the former Susan Frances Cooper. In December 1869, the Lomax family traveled by ox cart from Mississippi to Texas. John Lomax grew up in central Texas, just north of Meridian in rural Bosque County. His father raised horses and cattle and grew cotton and corn on the 183 acres (0.74 km2) of bottomland that he had purchased near the Bosque River. He was exposed to cowboy songs as a child. At around nine he befriended Nat Blythe, a former slave hired as a farmhand by James Lomax. The friendship, he wrote later, "perhaps gave my life its bent." Lomax, whose own schooling was sporadic because of the heavy farmwork he was forced to do, taught Blythe to read and write, and Blythe taught Lomax songs including "Big Yam Potatoes on a Sandy Land" and dance steps such as "Juba". When Blythe was 21 years old, he took his savings and left. Lomax never saw him again and heard rumors that he had been murdered. For years afterward, he always looked for Nat when he traveled around the South
Through a grant from the American Council of Learned Societies, Lomax was able to set out in June 1933 on the first recording expedition under the Library's auspices, with Alan Lomax (then eighteen years old) in tow. As now, a disproportionate percentage of African American males were held as prisoners. Robert Winslow Gordon, Lomax's predecessor at the Library of Congress, had written (in an article in the New York Times, c. 1926) that, "Nearly every type of song is to be found in our prisons and penitentiaries" Folklorists Howard Odum and Guy Johnson also had observed that, "If one wishes to obtain anything like an accurate picture of the workaday Negro he will surely find his best setting in the chain gang, prison, or in the situation of the ever-fleeing fugitive." But what these folklorists had merely recommended John and Alan Lomax were able to put into practice. In their successful grant application they wrote, following Odum, Johnson and Gordon's hint, that prisoners, "Thrown on their own resources for entertainment ... still sing, especially the long-term prisoners who have been confined for years and who have not yet been influenced by jazz and the radio, the distinctive old-time Negro melodies." They toured Texas prison farms recording work songs, reels, ballads, and blues from prisoners such as James "Iron Head" Baker, Mose "Clear Rock" Platt, and Lightnin' Washington. By no means were all of those whom the Lomaxes recorded imprisoned, however: in other communities, they recorded K.C. Gallaway and Henry Truvillion.
In July 1933, they acquired a state-of-the-art, 315 pounds (143 kg) phonograph uncoated-aluminum disk recorder. Installing it in the trunk of his Ford sedan, Lomax soon used it to record, at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, a twelve-string guitar player by the name of Huddie Ledbetter, better known as "Lead Belly," whom they considered one of their most significant finds. During the next year and a half, father and son continued to make disc recordings of musicians throughout the South.
John A. Lomax's contribution to the documentation of American folk traditions extended beyond the Library of Congress Music Division through his involvement with two agencies of the Works Progress Administration. In 1936, he was assigned to serve as an advisor on folklore collecting for both the Historical Records Survey and the Federal Writers' Project. Lomax's biographer, Nolan Porterfield, notes that the outlines of the famed WPA State Guides resulting from this work resemble Lomax and Benedict's earlier Book of Texas.
Upon Lomax's departure this work was continued by Benjamin A. Botkin, who succeeded Lomax as the Project's folklore editor in 1938, and at the Library in 1939, resulting in the invaluable compendium of authentic slave narratives: Lay My Burden Down: A Folk History of Slavery, edited by B. A. Botkin (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1945).
John A. Lomax served as president of the Texas Folklore Society for the years 1940–41, and 1941–42. In 1947 his autobiography Adventures of a Ballad Hunter (New York: Macmillan) was published and was awarded the Carr P. Collins prize as the best book of the year by the Texas Institute of Letters. The book was immediately optioned to be made into a Hollywood movie starring Bing Crosby as Lomax and Josh White as Lead Belly, but the project was never realized.
In 1932, Lomax met his friend, Henry Zweifel, a rancher and businessman then from Cleburne in Johnson County, while both were volunteers for Orville Bullington's Republican gubernatorial race against the Democrat Miriam Ferguson. Lomax's old enemy, James Ferguson, was virtually running his wife's comeback attempt at the governorship.
Lomax died of a stroke at the age of eighty in January 1948. On June 15 of that year, Lead Belly gave a concert at the University of Texas, performing children's songs such as "Skip to My Lou" and spirituals (performed with his wife Martha) that he had first sung years before for the late collector.
In 2010, John A. Lomax was inducted into the Western Music Hall of Fame for his contributions to the field of cowboy music.
