The Birthday
Artist: William Holman Hunt (English, 1827-1910
Description: A Portrait of the Artist's Wife, Edith
Style: Romanticism
Genre: Portrait
Date: 1868
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, San Francisco, CA
The Birthday was the first painting by William Holman Hunt, a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, to enter a public collection on the West Coast of the United States. It portrays Edith Waugh - Hunt’s second wife and the sister of his deceased first wife, Fanny - on her twenty-first birthday. With its vibrant coloring and tactile brushwork, The Birthday embodies the aesthetic forged by the Pre-Raphaelites against the grain of the more narrative approach then championed by official art institutions.

Victorian Radicals exhibition at the Museum of Birmingham (2024)
Haha so posting this here aswell because that’s what this blog was originally for but I guess I got sidetracked slightly by Malevolent and other things. But these pre-raphaelite pieces are absolutely gorgeous and I’ve been waiting years to see them in person and I just want to share them with everyone xoxo

New to my Etsy shop: Isabella Necklace, inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite painting 'Isabella and the Pot of Basil' by William Holman Hunt (1868).
The painting is from a scene in John Keats' poem Isabella, or the Pot of Basil (1818) which itself derives from a tale from the Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio (14th Century). In the poem, Isabella's brothers murder her lover Lorenzo, and when she finds out she takes his head and hides it in a pot of basil, suggested in Holman Hunt's painting by the skull on the pot, which I've included in this necklace in antique bronze. The beads (between 4 mm and 8 mm) are made from Picasso Jasper, reflecting the cloth over the prie-dieu, and the green glass beads represent the basil.
