highwish wind in the night and windy this morning – the ground sprinkled over with snow F37° inside at 8 50 and 38° outside at 9 20 the sun being out – Had written my note to ‘Mr. Mackean, Yorkshire district Bank, Halifax’ and went down to breakfast at 9 20 in ½ hour and at my desk at 9 50 – my note to McK- enclosing 2 checks 1 for Mr. Gray = £460 for A- and myself and one to Messrs. William and Francis Ponty (Huddersfield) = £8.12.0 – at accounts till about 11 when A- came for me to go down to Mr. Adam – all a mistake about the lease – but P. and A. will engage to get one or [two] to quit Mr. Lister at their own expense – A- proposed a Mr. Aked as a likely person to look after A-‘s cottages in H-x- good – I advised her to try him at once – they have written to Mr. Bull for the papers I desired to have but are uncertain if I can claim them before paying the bill – should claim them at the time of paying – then stood talking to A- till 12 25 (Mr. A- went away at 11 ¾) having dictated note to Washington to value A- wrote note to SW. to value the hay and dilapidations at the tan house farm – she gave the matter to Mr. Adam to settle with Thwaite of Mr. Rawsons’ Bank – then had the chimney sweeper to see if we had any chimneys to sweep and paid him his bill of 24/. for sweeping 24 minutes at the Northgate hotel as allowed by Mr. Harper – then had A- till 12 50 – off with her at 1 and walked with her in ½ hour as far as the turnpike then left her to go forwards to Cliff hill, and I turned up to Sunwood quarry – Jack Green there getting fence wall stuff and helping George to loaden the same – then to Listerwick – found Robert Mann there – he had been at the hall all the morning about making up the pipes at the north west corner of the west tower – so done that we can easily taken up a flag – get to and force them whenever necessary – took Robert down to the meer to settle about getting the scale there from Listerwick cabin near the water wheel – settled to cart it along Charles Howarths’ field – ordered 20 yards of 1ft. square drain to be made immediately, and to lie under the culvert of the new clow – took Robert round the meer and to the house at 3 20 just after John footman had set off with the 2 ponies (1st time – A- says he did very well – her ride did her good) to Cliff hill for A- then Robert and I looking about the hay-barn and thereabouts – he thinks he could get water into the paddock for the cattle with very little trouble – for £3 or £4 – well then said I, you shall do it – sent Robert off to Turners’ to see about some large fence stuff out of which we might get covers for the meer-drain – came in before 5 – dressed wrote to Mr. Gray with the credit for £460 i.e. £160 on A-‘s account and £300 on my own – i.e. ½ years 4p.c. interest on £1500 due today to the Misses Preston – A- wrote under my letter that her £160 was included in my draft due to Mr. Gray (William senior) today, and that she should be glad to pay the whole principal (£8,000) with the interest next July – then wrote to Messrs. Pontey on the back of the credit payable at the Yorkshire District bank at Huddersfield = £8.12.0 being the amount of their bill from 7 April 1837 to 23 April 1838 – Gave A- to put into the bag my letter to ‘William Gray junior Esquire, Minster yard, York’ and my letter to ‘Messrs. William and Francis Pontey, nurserymen seedsman etc. Kirkheaton Huddersfield post paid’ – dinner at 6 5 – Letter from Mr. Browne artist York to say the next no. of his work on the minster will be out in March – needs be no haste to pay for our tow 1st nos. already received – Letter also 3pp. and under the seal from M- Lawton – she seems pleased with the pen and book knife, and prudently lays aside her scolding style – thinks she shall probably be able to come here before we leave home again - £400 worth of damage done to York minster – no mention of Mr. WC. or the letter or newspaper forwarded (from him) from here – everybody advises her to read Oliver Twist – Mr. Ford has to their great comfort resigned the £300 a year living of Lawton and Mr. Lawton has given it to a young Mr. Tipping – A- read her 2pp. French – coffee and I had read the paper at 9 10 then till 9 ½ wrote all but the 1st 18 lines of today – then skimming over reading the few first chapters of Genesis till near 11, A- writing her journal – then stood talking till came upstairs at 10 55 at which hour F36° inside – wild windy cold day – no William Keighley as he promised – I suppose he thought it too windy to do anything among the trees – F30 ½° outside at 11 ¼ pm – on going to A- found cousin come   sat up preparing napkin for morning and put on stocking tonight

Early Access Discord Reserves

Hey everyone! With our discord opening tonight for early access, we've decided to provide an early reserve system. The following reserves are those currently reserved for pre-existing characters that the staff are carrying over from another site.

Milestone Monday, Peasants’ Revolt!

On this day, June the thirteenth, in 1381, as many as sixty thousand peasant rebels streamed into London, destroying the Savoy Palace, freeing prisoners, killing as many royals and government officials as possible, and causing general mayhem. The rebellion was in part a response to a recently imposed poll tax, and a more general revolt against the feudal order as workers found themselves in greater demand following the destruction of the Black Death. They were led by a man known as Wat Tyler. Not much is known about Tyler (like whether Tyler was his surname or if he was a roof tiler, or where and when he was born). What we do know is that Tyler arose as a de facto leader of the rebels and represented the group in talks with Richard III. We also know he was gravely wounded during his second parlay with the king, managed to get to a hospital, but was rooted out by the Mayor of London and publicly beheaded. 

The work shown here is a 19th-century sensationalist narrative of Wat Tyler by the English serial writer and novelist Pierce Egan the Younger, with 65 engraved illustrations by the American artist William H. Thwaites. Egan’s father, Pierce Egan, Sr., a well-known sports journalist, was the author of Boxiana, our copy of which we have highlighted a couple of times. 

Egan the Younger was liberal, even radical in his republican politics, which is reflected in this narrative. Egan has Tyler state that he wants to “effect a grand moral revolution” in favor of parliamentary representation and equality before the law, and against an oppressive and unjust aristocracy. When Tyler makes his decision to lead the uprising, Egan has Tyler’s fellow conspirator Jack Straw respond, “Merry England shall once again be the merry happy place she was ere these grasping heartless nobles turned it from a paradise to a vale of misery.”

Wat Tyler was originally serialized and then published in 1841 in three volumes as a follow-up to his successful 1838-1840 serialization of Robin Hood and Little John. Egan originally wrote Wat Tyler as a narrative of another anti-monarchist, Oliver Cromwell, but when he learned that someone else was about to publish a book about Cromwell, Egan simply changed the characters and setting to the 14th-century Peasants’ Revolt. Our copy is an 1851 reprinting of the first edition, an “Author’s Large Edition,” printed in London by William Spencer Johnson and sold in London by Simpkin & Marshall, in Edinburgh by Oliver and Boyd and John Menzies, and in Dublin by William Curry, Jr. & Co.

DC FanDome: Schedule, Date, Time, and How to Watch

Fans hoping for major DC news in lieu of an actual San Diego Comic-Con are definitely going to get just that at DC FanDome, a digital event designed to be watched at home like a real con.

Originally set up as one epic night of panels and reveals, DC announced that it will be splitting FanDome into two separate and distinct events: Hall of Heroes, which will be held in late August, and WatchVerse in mid-September.

The August date still holds most of the big-ticket items. It’s billed by DC as “an epic world designed personally by Jim Lee featuring special programming, panels and exclusive reveals from a wide variety of films, TV series, games, comics and more.” Functionally, it’s the Hall H of FanDome.

While DC FanDome is free for all to enjoy, you will need to create an account on DCFanDome.com in order to watch the event. You’ll then be able to access each panel via the DC FanDome program scheduler.

Following the conclusion of The Batman panel at the end of Hall of Heroes, the Fandome schedule will then cycle back through two more times, giving you three shots to watch in a 24-hour period.

DC FanDome: WatchVerse Date and Time

DC will host a second, on-demand FanDome event called WatchVerse on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 1 pm ET. While viewers will be able to access all content in any order they please, the event will only be available for 24 hours.

no kiss rather hazy but morning F66° now at 8 am in my study - stood reading last night’s paper (in my study) till 8 ½ then went out for ¼ hour about - breakfast at 8 ¾ - off to Halifax at 9 40 down the old bank to the Yorkshire District Bank and got £50     told Mrs Greenwood to tell G- I was returned and wanted his sawyers to cut up the oaks logs - then to Mr Parker’s office - the title deeds of Barraclough Lane head 2 cottages and garden all ready for signing and Speight would be there this morning - to sign them - title sufficiently good - paid Mr P- £76 being the whole purchase money he being to repay Mark Town the £5 deposit money - the cottages A- has bought in Hatters fold old tumble down concerns but materials and ground worth the money £450 - the late JW- A-‘s brother bade as much as that for them  - Mr P- had received Mr Harper’s instructions for making out the contract with Messrs. Nelson - told him to let me see the rough draft as there might be some alterations to make about the stables - they were not now set out quite as I intended - Mr P- inquired after A- but said not a word of S-s and looked grave - Qu’est ce qu’il y a? returned up the old bank - a minute or 2 with Robert Schofield and Joseph Sharpe at Park wood and sent them to make a new shooting down place for George Pickels opposite the house, and home about before 11 - met Washington and Holt at the gate - told the former to let me have Turner’s estimate of stone for the tail goit then walked down with H- along the intended line of tail goit - then home and took Charles and James H- and Carter with the shuttle down the Spiggs water - loose - had a little collier from the Stump X water drift to clear the goit and then put down the shuttle about 12 - had sent George to Ward for the iron-work - not ready - will send it at noon tomorrow - Holt will be tomorrow at 3pm and the iron-work will be soldered in, and the water dammed up and the lose in progress of stopping - H- says it will take 10 days or a fortnight to raise the water enough to stop Samuel Holdsworth’s plans - letting the heads to drive (today) to be worked night and day - but we shall beat them - then with H- to the Stump X drift - have driven about 40 yards length - will soon be under  the dirt-band, and have a good run of water - a reservoir to be made near the end of the mouth drift - thence to the road 50 yards ¾in. bore pipe (lead) thence across the road to the house with a ½in. bore pipe to William Green’s house - then walked with H- as far as the Lodge - looked about me a little thought to put the hall kitchen-gardens in the top Godley field instead of at the bottom of the low conery Ing and came in at 1 ½ - H- says there will now be no more difficulty in bottoming Walker pit - will be down in 6 weeks for this time, and in 3 weeks from there will be getting coal - said I thought of making a place that the banksman could live in close to the pit - H- said there should be 2 rooms of 5x5 yards each - and agreed that the present hut would be enough for sharpening and for the gin horse - sometime with A- while she wrote her note to the Trustees Hipperholm school asking when and to whom to pay the £5 annual rent charge out of Lane Ends farm - then wrote all the above of today till 2 ¼ - out at  2 ½ - walked Joseph Mann and A- rode the gray horse to see about Thwaite’s water and the trough in A-‘s Hipperholm lane - then 35 minutes with A- and her tenant Brook and Washington looking over the house Grieves has just left and Empsall’s cottage adjoining - walked then with Joseph M- who had waited for me into Mr Charles Robinson’s yew trees land to look at the water there with a view to getting it to yew trees house - impossible - a mere collection of top-water from the drainage of the field – JM- said he did not know the strata thereabouts but should think water would be got at yew trees by sinking 12 yards deep - left JM- at Hipperholm lane-ends about 4 and returned by Lower brea daisy bank and coffin lane - then sauntered along the brook to the Mytholm dam-stones- saw Thomas Pearson for a few minutes - some distant thunder and a flash of lightning and dark so made for the hut - a slight shower - asleep there for 40 minutes till 5 50 - then home at 6 5 - Mr Herbert Mitchell had been waiting 5 minutes to speak an office at Northgate - could give him no hope - should be glad to accommodate him if I could - there would be 3 shops and a small house but the house would be 3 stories (2 rooms on a floor) and have a cellar kitchens - he only wants 4 rooms - could I not build a place only 2 stories high - no! the ground too valuable there - very civil to him - he said he found he was already a tenant of mine - (i.e. for the Staups pew at the old church) - said yes! but I left that to the sexton of the church to manage as he thought fair and right as I understood he Mr HM- had new [lined] the pew - A- not at home till 6 ½ - near ¼ hour with my aunt - dinner at 6 ¾ - coffee - ¼ hour with my father and Marian - Mr Washington this morning left for me with A- the keys of Mytholm farm house de la part de Mrs Dewhirst who has at last left the place - wrote the last 18 lines till 8 ½ pm then reading tonight’s paper till 9 20 among the departures see my own for my seat in Yorkshire - sat with A- then 25 minutes with my aunt till 10 20 fine day - a little hazy dampness between 8 and 9 am and vid. line 8 thunder and lightning between 5 and 6 pm fine evening afterwards F70 ½° now at 10 20 pm in my study - F73° at 11 ½ pm in my dressing room

cross last night thinking of Miss W- soft rainy morning – Mr William? Barber (who lives where Isaac Thwaite lived and pays £90 a year for not quite 40 D.W. and buildings) came at 8 to ask leave to go with tillage along my Whiskam road – granted till such time as the toll-house should be built – he explained to myself and then to Charles Howarth how his (Mr Babrers’) father’s railing was done and I mean to have mine done in the same way - he staid an hour - then had Charles H- taking pattern of the library window mullions for the north chamber - breakfast at 9 3/4 in ¾ hour - with Marian speak as if al was settled with Miss Walker at least Marian seems to think it so came to my study at 10 ½ - had 1 or 2 little naps from then to 2 and read from p. 312 to 393 end of

An interesting work - well written - but it and read it again - out at 2 10 till 5 40 with Mallinson  - Mr Babrers’ railing too light, so changed back to the old plan - posts 1/5 stone and carting and 9d. holing and tops pointing = 2/2 each for 100 = £10.16.8 - down the new bank almost to Matthew Booth’s just below they began today carting stuff (soil and clay) for the ft of the road wall near our approach gates - I am to pay for carting the soil 1/. a load, the other stuff brought for nothing - Pickels and his son John here in the morning but not for long - rain sent them home-  sauntered in my walk – Mallinsons hewing north chamber fireplace and one 1 doing the heading of family doorway –

Wrote note to ‘Mr. Hutton 114 Park street’ and put it in the box with my new pelisse to have the pockets in front, outside taken away, and my last but this as a pattern, begging Hutton to write a note particular and plain description of it in his book that I may have no trouble another time and desiring to send both pelisses back again as soon as possible - then wrote 2 pages to ‘Miss Walker Heworth Grange York’ to ask where the servants are to sit – recommended their having the little room below where we dined and our dining upstairs – can pay Mrs. Bewley for extra trouble – should leave here at 11 and be with Miss W- at 5 - Sent off box to ‘Mr. Hutton 114 Park Street Grosvenor square London per Hope coach 25 February 1834’ and my  letter to Miss W- at 9 - then an hour with my aunt - Thomas brought me back letter 3 pages ends and a few lines of crossing from Miss Walker Heworth Grange - did not get mine till 4 pm yesterday! delighted at the thought of seeing me - packing and looking over things till 1 - rainy morning till about (after) 11 then fair and tolerably fine afternoon and evening F52° now at one tonight.

A- at Cliff Hill - ready in 40 minutes - snowing at 8 - 1st snow this season - the ground white now at 8 ½ at which hour F42 ½°  - dusting and arranging my books till 11 ¼ then breakfast till 11 55 then went out into the Saddle room Booth and Cockroft there the former smoothing the flags to amuse himself should charge me nothing - he sent his masons home at 10 and the 3 farmyard wallers - Robert Mann + 3 came but went away before noon - saw James H- about between 8 and 9 - out in the farmyard and about till 12 20 - then note from A- Cliff Hill by Mr Washington’s servant to say she should not be at home till Saturday - the horses to be ready for her at 3 ½ pm on that day -  Enclosed a letter to ‘Mr Barker ‘ (should have been Barber) the schoolmaster at Leeds (altered the name on the address of the letter to Barber) asking him to come over on Monday -  wrote 3 pages of ½ sheet note in answer to A- disappointed at her not returning this afternoon - should ½ of us be dead of ennui on the spleen if she disappointed me on Saturday..... the letter tout ce qu’il faut [everything that is necessary] and shall be despatched tonight - enclose her a printed note and Throp’s bill, and the letter to her aunt from her sister that came last night - had kept Mr Washington’s man waiting 40 minutes - then wrote the above of today till 1 ¼ - till four and a quarter writing rough draft of long letter to Lady Stuart - had William Keighley at 2 for ¼ hour came to beg off till Monday going to A- tomorrow - said he had better go - well he could if he might be let off at noon - so he is to go to Cliff Hill tomorrow if fine - told him about the Spiggs Loose - that I should try again and put down sluice this time so that I could not obliged the Spiggs co. about the water even if I would - he seemed to think me quite right - said his brother Joseph did not at all like coming the day he came with Thwaite and Cricley Holt - and he (William) had given them up and had done with them long since - he said he should not tell Holt (my agent) but he meant to bid at my new colliery - I said I hoped it would be ready in 18 months - said I would  not have his (William’s) intention of bidding - sold him the trees he felled for me a little while ago at his own valuations - to be taken away by and by and paid for at the rent day 1st Wednesday in January - price £9.1.6. Had Charles H- about 3pm will finish at Walker pit tomorrow - will be wanted then 2 or 3 hours - then in about 4 days will finish for Mark Town at Barraclough cottage - then will take him 3 days for finish Hopkin’s cowhouse - will have all done by next Monday or Tuesday week - and then we will side up for the winter at home - he is to put Lower Place [spouts] amongst hands - next week - wrote the last 17 lines till 4 35 - then went out

sometime talking to Frank in the farmyard - then went to the Conery and gave Matty Pollard 2 ½ sovereigns for Luke Greenwood’s widow for her oven 10/ gooseberry bushes etc in the garden 20/ set-stones that partly fence off the garden 10/. + 10/. a gift for her leaving the cottage to readily - looked over the cottage 2 rooms a cellar and back kitchen in very decent repair - William Pollard told me he had asked Miss Holdsworth what she would take for her 4 Godley cottages and offered her £200 - must he bid anymore? I said I should it was as much as they were worth - perhaps he might get them for that sum and I would buy them of him and give him something for his trouble - said he should have one of them if he liked, to live in at the same rent he pays now 45/. a year and each of the cottages is let at £4 - I asked what I should give him for his bargain - he said he would leave it to me - Matty said I had already promised them one of the cottages at 45/. yes! but said I, William must have a fastening penny - and there the matter ended -  I must give him a sovereign - I had not asked him to buy the cottages for me - he had heard me mention them and spoke about them of his own accord - home at 6 20 - some while with my father and Marian - sealed my aunt’s note to the Vicar enclosing him 2 sovereigns from the family towards the £14.14.0 he has paid Mr Binns for copying his likeness of Mr Sunderland to be put up at the Dispensary - sealed and sent (too) A-‘s letter to Mr Barber of Leeds, and my own note to ‘Mr Joseph Simpson, Iron Founder King Cross lane’ saying I was sorry I could not accommodate him as I did not wish to have foundry near the Northgate hotel - dinner at 7 - coffee - sat reading Michelet’s abrégé of the history of the modern ages - very good - got it when last in Paris - an hour with my father and Marian - read over the newspaper while with them and skimmed over the Gentleman’s magazine - came upstairs at 9 5 - cut open a Frenal work volume 1 and went to my aunt at 9 50 for 20 minutes then wrote so far of this page till 10 40 - Snowy wintery day till between 1 and 2 pm then damp and small snow or rain for an hour or 2 afterwards fair for the rest of the day - F47° now at 10 ¾ pm - Writing out George’s account for the last 6 weeks and looking over bills till 12 ½ - had Firth this afternoon ordered 5 yards inch bore lead pipe 14 lbs to the yard to come on Monday - the town’s inch bore-pipe Firth says is 13 lbs to the yard - he will make me pipe of any weight and lay it at 3d. a lb.

No kiss fine but rather hazy morning F51° at 8 55 with Charles and James H- about hanging doors in the north chamber – breakfast at 8 ¾ - read this morning Herald – A- had William Green’s wife – better on her return from Huddersfield Infirmary – about an hour till 12 with my father and Marian – settled to pay the latter for A- and myself and our 2 servants £10 per month and advised her having it the 1st of every month – out with A- at 12 10 no! prevented by Mr Hoyland – the room will not be ready for painting (plaster over fireplace not dry)  till the end of the next week – Washington came to A- about Taylor’s turning over the Tanhouse farm to one of the Southowram Thwaites’ - the walling of the field I have bought of W- (from the road) walling and stones would be done at 10/. a rood - walling being 2/4 or 2/6 - there will be 25 roods from Hardcastle’s house - sat by A- at her luncheon and out at 1 25 - along the Trough of Bolland by John Oates’s and Fold and Haystocks to Shibden mill and thence along Mr Emmett’s park behind Staups and Stump X Inn and home by Trough of B- wood at 3 20 – out again alone in ¼ hour till 5 ¼ - talking to John about Spiggs colliery and then to Charles H- in the workshop about coals - he has heard the colliers say they had got as far as Barraclough-land head - I laughed and said they had saved me a great deal of trouble - read a page or 2 – dinner at 6 – coffee in the blue room – just wished my aunt goodnight at 10 and had been ¼ hour with my father and Marian between dinner and coffee – all the evening besides till 11 25 reading over A-‘s father’s will   65 foolscap pages of her copying  very fine day F51° now at 11 20 pm.
