Story: 0.5/5 - Flummoxing. An already nonsensical setup is made unwatchable by utterly incoherent dialogue, character motivations, and filler.

Performances: 1.5/5 - As fun as a hammy performance can be, some of the actors are so cartoonish that it's a bit embarrassing to watch. Meanwhile, others flatly deliver their lines like children reading book reports.

Cinematography: 2/5 - Poorly lit and mostly blandly framed.

Editing: 1/5 - No true transitions or logic. Intertitles describing mental illnesses unrelated to the story are shoved in at random (I believe they were meant to give the film an "educational" angle and avoid censorship).

Music: 2/5

Effects: 3/5 - There's a surprisingly okay beating heart in a jar effect.

Sets: 2.5/5 - Cheap but there's at least some dressing.

Beyond the Time Barrier (1960) is a low-budget, sci-fi B-picture from director Edgar G. Ulmer (The Black Cat, 1934; Detour, 1945) and writer Arthur C. Pierce (The Cosmic Man, 1959; The Human Duplicators, 1965). To Chad’s dismay, the plot includes a lot of walking and talking across a set filled with inverted pyramids. Oh, and the mutants… sigh.
