okay more stuff about the wild west au: -the scarecrow is wizard suliman’s loyal horse that’s been galloping around the countryside lookin’ for him (and terrorizing sophie, who thought she was getting the beginning of a magical horse-bonding moment and now keeps seeing that Same Freaking Stallion all over). -the hat shop sells derby hats, wool caps, sombreros, and other stylish but practical hats, so when sophie sees howl wearing a hollywood-western style cartoonish 10-gallon cowboy hat she’s like WHAT is on your HEAD. -michael’s still from a family of fishers bc porthaven is just brownsville tx on the coast (he went nuts the first time he saw snow). -the dogman is full on a coyote and when howl comes home and see it he’s like :0 um sophie? and she’s like >:| yes? and he changes the subject. -since howl is still from 1980s wales, calcifer sings sosban fach like in canon, which is a good thing bc otherwise i’d have to choose between making it a nice lullaby like arroyo claro (“clear stream” which i can’t find a lullaby version of on youtube!! but i’ve always heard it as a lullaby??) or something really funny like old skyball paint (“old skyball paint was a devil’s saint and his eyes were fiery red/good men have tried this horse to ride but most of them are dead”) -you’ve heard of howl calling sophie ‘cariad,’ now get ready for: sophie calling howl ‘cariño’ (obviously much later in the timeline but STILL) -at the beginning its mentioned that sophie made lettie a beautiful pink dress n i’m imagining one of these embroidered ones:

-this would absolutely be an excuse to cram as much cowboy slang as i can manage, of which howl understands about half. most of the time when sophie thinks he’s out courting he’s actually just trying to track down someone who’ll tell him whether it’s a good thing or not that she called him “flannel-mouthed” (like a smooth-talker) -howl has perfumes that smell like gardenia and freesia and mountain laurel and magnolia, and maybe some citrus? it’s all v nice -okay howl doesn’t know all the slang & jargon but he does enthusiastically mix turns of phrase from both worlds and he DOES call sophie “darlin’” which makes a mess of her, NOT that she would admit it (this was lyd’s idea and i have not stopped thinking about it since) -howl wears. so much fringe. all the time.

I WOULD LOVE TO it started out as a joke between me & lyd @born-to-strange-sights but i. legitimately enjoy it a lot. anyway i think this moodboard covers most of it

essentially the wild west au is me having fun imagining Howl’s Moving Castle taking place in a weird anachronistic version of texas. of course, Howl is still from 1980s wales :)
