Heyo! This is a little ramble I needed to make before the founders cut comes out!  yipee!

So we can see in the above images the methods Showfall Media is using to control gl!Sneeg gl!Charlie and gl!Ranboo, they use an already pre-existing technology called an Electroencephalogram (EEG). Now this technology has been in use for decades, and essentially how it works is that it uses electrodes placed onto your scalp combined with a conductive gel to measure the electrical activity in your brain, these electrical signals are usually referred to as “brain waves” and these brainwaves can be subdivided into four categories, Gamma (greater than 30 Hz), Beta (13-30 Hz), Alpha (8-12 Hz), Theta (3.5-7.5 Hz), and Delta (0.1-3.5 Hz)

These different brainwaves are generally assosiated with different emotions, awareness levels, brain activities, etc. Now if Showfall Media has installed these onto sneeg, charlie, and ranboo, that means they have access to their thoughts and feelings, but brainscanning isn’t an absolute precise device, it still takes a lot of human effort and time to properly interpret the brainwaves. If Showfall somehow had a tool to easily interpret the signals they could much more easily operate, say, a live show. Lucky for them there is already a real life solution to this problem, kinda.

Its called Brain Generative Pre-Training Transformer, or BrainGPT for short.  What its goal is, is to act as an assist tool for human neurologists to use in real neuroscience cases and case studies, what it does is it uses a Large Language Model (LLM) full of pre-existing human research papers and other neuroscience knowledge too vast for human comprehension. And whenever a neurologist hands BrainGPT a prompt, (such as anomalous finding or to asses the fields understanding of a certain topic) , “would generate likely data patterns reflecting its current synthesis of the scientific literature”  (braingpt.org)

Now in regards to Generation Loss, what this means is that Showfall Media potentially has acces to this sort of technology, and would be able to use it in the production of their shows, now BrainGPT has a good way to go before its widely avalable. But in the genloss au, it can be far into development at this point, and be available for companies to use in whatever way they see fit.

Now reading and decoding brain signals is one thing, but to mind control someone is far beyond what is capable today, but Showfall Media has somehow developed technology to do so, the way I’m guessing they did it is that they produced certain brainwaves from the electrodes on the actors heads to give them the emotional reactions they needed for the show. I can’t exactly get into the technical stuff cause I’m not a neurologist, but its just a hunch on how I think they did it.

As for the mind controlling devices themselves, I feel there’s a more subtextual reason as to why those objects in particular are chosen as the devices that are central to the show’s operation. Ranboo’s mask has been a heavy emphasis throughout Gen 1 TSE,

Its been a central figure in not only generation loss’ marketing, but also ranboo’s marketing, because when you think of ranboo one of the first things that pops up is the mask, atleast in the wider public’s eye.

But these general associations not only exist with Ranboo, with Slimcicle you usually think of the wide brim glasses, with Sneeg its his backwards cap, and this is with the other cast members too when their introduced on the spinning carousel in episode 2. Furthermore, with Niki it’s that’s she's just so nice, with Austin its that he’s just a gay guy,  and with Vinny and Ethan these associations don’t really exist. So, with Vinny he's just the “hoarder”, and Ethan isn't even introduced. And then there's Jerma, who is relinquished to a goofy character with a weird voice and a strange sense of humour which sort of fits his public image.

But what I wanna mention with Ranboo’s mask specifically is that with the three images shown on the genloss twitter of the control devices, sneeg’s is just a hat, like theres nothing special about it, just a hat with electrodes on it, when you take it off he’s completely in control of himself. But, with charlie’s it’s a good bit harder to just take it off. His glasses are drilled into his skull connected to electrodes which are also implanted in his skull, with an additional feature of a speaker in his jaw. But if you remove the glasses, there would be a lot of bleeding and his vision would be impaired, but he would still be a free man.

But with Ranboo, poor, poor, Ranboo… Like Charlie, they have electrodes implanted on to their brain connected to a switch on the back of their skull (which also may or may not also be connected to their spine, idk its hard to tell). These sprout wires that thread through the mask and lead into their throat, and the mask piece itself is sewn shut onto their SKIN.

Now this makes me wonder, why is Ranboo so heavily guarded when the other are (relatively) easy to set free? Is it because Ranboo is an integral part of the show and therefore high risk? Is it because Showfall needed extra resources for the chat to be able to control them?... Or is it because Ranboo tried to escape so many times before that they were forced to disfigure them to such an extreme degree, and yet somehow, SOMEHOW, they are able to resist, whether it be tapping SOS on their hand when they're on full control mode or shanking a Showfall employee with a dagger, Ranboo, Resists. But Showfall will never let them leave. Or they will? Idk founders cut hasn’t come out yet as of writing this, anyway ramble over. You can leave now.

Researchers have shown how the tax system can reinforce disparities between households of different races or ethnicities, even though the Internal Revenue Code does not explicitly favor any racial group. These disparities arise because the tax code favors certain types of income, expenses, and family characteristics—factors that often vary by race and ethnicity.

Despite being the fastest-growing racial group in the country, Asian American households remain an understudied population in tax policy research. Around 24 million Americans, or 7% of the U.S. population, identify either as Asian or Asian in combination with another race. Using newly available data, we find that among American households in the top 20% of the income distribution, Asian American households pay a higher average individual tax rate than white households, in large part because they earn more of their income from labor earnings, while white households are more likely to own tax-favored assets.

How do we know? Previously, the triennial Survey of Consumer Finance (SCF) had assigned information on all Asian American households to the “Other” racial category. The 2022 SCF oversamples minorities and is the first wave to present specific data for households in three separate categories: Asian American, American Indian or Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.

Researchers can now explore the impact of the tax code on Asian American taxpayers relative to white taxpayers. Our analysis uses the 2022 SCF data, an established methodology to convert households into tax filing units, and the NBER’s TAXSIM microsimulation model. Still, the small number of Asian Americans in the 2022 SCF sample, limit the level of detail in our statistical analysis. But that limit highlights the need for more specific data and research.

Differences in income distribution

Figure 1 compares the expanded income (EI) distribution of Asian American and white households. EI includes adjusted gross income, cash and near-cash benefits, and untaxed sources of capital income such as unrealized capital gains and imputed rent from owning a home.

Asian American taxpayers have a bimodal distribution; that is, they largely fall into two main areas of this distribution, and their incomes vary more widely compared to white taxpayers. While a large proportion of Asian Americans are in the top 20% of the distribution, a sizable share is in the lowest 20 to 40% of the distribution, revealing diversity within the Asian American community. This finding challenges the “model minority” stereotype that all Asian American families are financially well-off.

Differences in average tax rate

Figure 2 shows the average tax rate (ATR, or the ratio of income tax liability to EI) for Asian American and white households.

The ATR generally rises with income for both groups, reflecting the progressive nature of the federal income tax. Among those in the top 60% of the income distribution, Asian American households pay higher ATRs than white households. Subsequent regression analysis (not shown), however, indicates this difference is statistically significant only for the top quintile (at the 10% level, a criterion we chose based on the limited sample size). The higher ATR arises because, relative to white households, Asian American households earn a greater share of their income from fully-taxed labor income (earned from working) rather than tax-favored capital income (earned from sources including realized or unrealized capital gains, unreported business income, or imputed rent on owner-occupied housing).

Contributing factors to tax disparities

While differences in the composition and level of income matter when assessing the tax treatment of Asian American households, other factors may also contribute these differences.

For example, the tax code generally favors single-earner married couples, but the labor force participation of Asian American women is higher than that of white women. That raises the possibility of a higher occurrence of marriage penalties among Asian households. The younger age distribution of Asian Americans compared to white Americans may drive other differences. Asian American households are less likely to own homes but owe more when they do, possibly because a large share of Asian American people live in high-cost areas like San Francisco. This suggests potential differences in the use of the mortgage interest deduction.

Asian American households are also less likely to hold tax-preferred retirement accounts, and their households are more likely to be multigenerational, which may cause confusion about which adults are eligible for benefits. In fact, a recent Treasury study found that low-income Asian Americans are less likely to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit than any other low-income racial group.

There’s much more to learn

While these preliminary findings show how the tax code affects Asian American and white households differently, researchers need more data to conduct deeper analyses. There may be disparities in income tax liabilities within the broadly diverse Asian American population. Cultural norms, socioeconomic statuses, and lived experiences vary widely among Asian American families from different countries and regions.  

In March 2024, the Biden administration updated Statistical Policy Directive No. 15 to require federal data to subdivide the “Asian American” category into subgroups, including Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese. With these detailed data, researchers can perform more nuanced analyses that further debunk the “model minority” myth.

Policymakers should use this research to better understand the economic needs of low-income Asian American families, particularly the most vulnerable among them. That includes the uncertainty faced by undocumented immigrants and the high poverty rates among Burmese (19%) and Hmong (17%) Americans.

Examining differences in tax treatments between Asian American subgroups will allow researchers to capture the diverse experiences and needs of these communities, enabling the development of responsive policies.

Only available in limited quantities, these unique crafted daggers make a perfect final touch to a Landsknecht ensemble. Although elegant in its proportions, the dagger has a fullered hexagonal geometric cross section to give it great rigidity and durability – this is a dagger that is capable of deftly piercing thick cloaks and clothing, or through the weaker points of an armored harness with alarming ease. The dagger is paired with a tough wood core scabbard that is embellished with steel fittings to match the blade with a unifying theme.

“In the 16th century, a peculiar style of daggers appeared. Specimens share details from rondels, quillon daggers and ballocks. While they could be forced into one or more of these categories, they are a thing of their own and the current consensus is to just call them Landsknechtdolchen, “Landsknecht daggers”. Several of them have all-metal hilts and a few are all-steel, with the grip and pommel being hollow constructions.

This specific model’s hilt is based on an original in a private collection. It’s made from six individual hand-formed pieces, silver-soldered together. The tang passes through the dished top plate and is peened over it. Like several daggers, it offers a very secure grip, locking the user’s fist between guard and pommel. The steel chape and mouth are made from multiple hand-formed and silver-soldered pieces, and emulate the clothing fashion of the time. While surviving pieces of the style are generally high-status items, we see plenty of simpler, lower status iterations on woodcuts from the period. A steel belt loop is silver-soldered on the back of the mouth at an angle. It works best with 20-25mm wide belts.

Thinking About AI: Part 2 - Structural Risks

Yesterday I wrote a post on where we are with artificial intelligence by providing some history and foundational ideas around neural network size. Today I want to start in on risks from artificial intelligence. These fall broadly into two categories: existential and structural. Existential risk is about AI wiping out most or all of humanity. Structural risk is about AI aggravating existing problems, such as wealth and power inequality in the world. Today's post is about structural risks.

Structural risks of AI have been with us for quite some time. A great example of these is the Youtube recommendation algorithm. The algorithm, as far as we know, optimizes for engagement because Youtube's primary monetization are ads. This means the algorithm is more likely to surface videos that have an emotional hook than ones that require the viewer to think. It will also pick content that emphasizes the same point of view, instead of surfacing opposing views. And finally it will tend to recommend videos that have already demonstrated engagement over those that have not, giving rise to a "rich getting richer" effect in influence.

With the current progress it may look at first like these structural risks will just explode. Start using models everywhere and wind up having bias risk, "rich get richer" risk, wrong objective function risk, etc. everywhere. This is a completely legitimate concern and I don't want to dismiss it.

On the other hand there are also new opportunities that come from potentially giving broad access to models and thus empowering individuals. For example, I tried the following prompt in Chat GPT "I just watched a video that argues against universal basic income. Can you please suggest some videos that make the case for it? Please provide URLs so I can easily watch the videos." and it quickly produced a list videos for me to watch. Because so much content has been ingested, users can now have their own "Opposing View Provider" (something I had suggested years ago).

There are many other ways in which these models can empower individuals, for example summarizing text at a level that might be more accessible. Or pointing somebody in the right direction when they have encountered a problem. And here we immediately run into some interesting regulatory challenges. For example: I am quite certain that Chat GPT could give pretty good free legal advice. But that would be running afoul of the regulations on practicing law. So part of the structural risk issue is that our existing regulations predate any such artificial intelligence and will oddly contribute to making its power available to a smaller group (imagine more profitable law firms instead of widely available legal advice).

There is a strong interaction here also between how many such models will exist (from a small oligopoly to potentially a great many) and to what extent endusers can embed these capabilities programmatically or have to use them manually. To continue my earlier example, if I have to head of Chat GPT every time I want to ask for an opposing view I will be less likely to do so than if I could script the sites I use so that an intelligent agent can represent me in my interactions. This is of course one of the core suggestions I make in my book The World After Capital in a section titled "Bots for All of Us."

I am sympathetic to those who point to structural risks as a reason to slow down the development of these new AI systems. But I believe that for addressing structural risks the better answer is to make sure that there are many AIs, that they can be controlled by endusers, that we have programmatic access to these and other systems, etc. Put differently structural risks are best addressed by having more artificial intelligence with broader access.

We should still think about other regulation to address structural risks but much of what has been proposed here doesn't make a ton of sense. For example, publishing an algorithm isn't that helpful if you don't also publish all the data running through it. In the case of a neural network alternatively you could require publishing the network structure and weights but that would be tantamount to open sourcing the entire model as now anyone could replicate it. So for now I believe the focus of regulation should be avoiding a situation where there are just a few huge models that have a ton of market power.

Some will object right here that this would dramatically aggravate the existential risk question, but I will make an argument in my next post why that may not be the case.

Earlier, the only non-Indo-European grammar at all widely accessible was that of the Hebrews (and to some extent Arabic); Semitic in fact shares many categories with Indo-European in its grammar. Indeed, for many of the exotic languages, scholarship barely passed beyond the most rudimentary initial collection of word lists; grammatical analysis was scarcely approached.

In the field of grammar, the Renaissance did not produce notable innovation or advance. Generally speaking, there was a strong rejection of speculative grammar and a relatively uncritical resumption of late Roman views (as stated by Priscian). This was somewhat understandable in the case of Latin or Greek grammars, since here the task was less evidently that of intellectual inquiry and more that of the schools, with the practical aim of gaining access to the newly discovered ancients. But, aside from the fact that, beginning in the 15th century, serious grammars of European vernaculars were actually written, it is only in particular cases and for specific details (e.g., a mild alteration in the number of parts of speech or cases of nouns) that real departures from Roman grammar can be noted. Likewise, until the end of the 19th century, grammars of the exotic languages, written largely by missionaries and traders, were cast almost entirely in the Roman model, to which the Renaissance had added a limited medieval syntactic ingredient.

From time to time a degree of boldness may be seen in France: Petrus Ramus, a 16th-century logician, worked within a taxonomic framework of the surface shapes of words and inflections, such work entailing some of the attendant trivialities that modern linguistics has experienced (e.g., by dividing up Latin nouns on the basis of equivalence of syllable count among their case forms). In the 17th century a group of Jansenists (followers of the Flemish Roman Catholic reformer Cornelius Otto Jansen) associated with the abbey of Port-Royal in France produced a grammar that has exerted noteworthy continuing influence, even in contemporary theoretical discussion. Drawing their basic view from scholastic logic as modified by rationalism, these people aimed to produce a philosophical grammar that would capture what was common to the grammars of languages—a general grammar, but not aprioristically universalist. This grammar attracted attention from the mid-20th century because it employs certain syntactic formulations that resemble rules of modern transformational grammar.

Roughly from the 15th century to World War II, however, the version of grammar available to the Western public (together with its colonial expansion) remained basically that of Priscian with only occasional and subsidiary modifications, and the knowledge of new languages brought only minor adjustments to the serious study of grammar. As education became more broadly disseminated throughout society by the schools, attention shifted from theoretical or technical grammar as an intellectual preoccupation to prescriptive grammar suited to pedagogical purposes, which started with Renaissance vernacular nationalism. Grammar increasingly parted company with its older fellow disciplines within philosophy as they moved over to the domain known as natural science, and technical academic grammatical study increasingly became involved with issues represented by empiricism versus rationalism and their successor manifestations on the academic scene.

Nearly down to the present day, the grammar of the schools has had only tangential connections with the studies pursued by professional linguists; for most people prescriptive grammar has become synonymous with “grammar,” and the prevailing view held by educated people regards grammar as an item of folk knowledge open to speculation by all, and in nowise a formal science requiring adequate preparation such as is assumed for chemistry.

This is Eric P Hamp in the Britannica. Hamp (1920 - 2019) was of the same generation as Burgess (1917 - 1993), educated in philology around the time of the World Wars. This is the generation suceeding that of Tolkien (1892 - 1973).

I have highlighted two bits of temporal deixis. He sees, correctly, there having been a sort of scientific watershed around the period of the Wars.

"Nearly down to the present day" I interpret as being more metaphorical than temporal -- the hope of the postwar scientists was that in "the present day" of peace, the bright light of linguistic science would illuminate the world more than tangentially. Since he lived to 2019 he will have been well aware that this failed to happen despite his efforts, and therefore the Priscian darkness continues to hang around -- but "nearly" almost not.

What lessons did we learn from Covid?

That the unemployment metrics are wrong.

Most people are picking up money from Uber and Door Dash. Even for people with jobs already, these are like job 2,3, or 4. There's already a problem; these services are *losing* money. And the stock *gurus* have said that they are all overvalued.

Which means they're going to have to start cutting payments in some places. It also suggests that they're already overpaying drivers compared to what their model can support. (A premium to entice drivers would be logical in order to get a large enough foothold in the market.)

The U.S. Unemployment metrics which say like *0%* or as much as *4%* are likely overinflated by these numbers. This suggests that there isn't a lazy person in the U.S. as much as conservative pundits want to proclaim. I. Fact, if anything; Americans continue to overwork themselves on the coattails of a pandemic!

And they still can't afford a vacation. Lucky everybody had that forced vacation time, right?

The next biggest employment group is what you'd expect; service industry like food workers, and grocery and department stores. These aren't just the bottom rung, we're looking at their shift leads and management required for every store as well.

Then agriculture, public services like schools and the DMV, then *maybe* public health.

I said it that way because the results from each page change based on how they combine or not combine certain industries. Retail Stores that feed everybody including restaurants are what I would think go together, and for this analysis, it means that most people are all working in a specific industry.

Supplying, Cooking, and Delivering food.

Agriculture I put after that because of those previous things were separate, agriculture would be king. (Agriculture is separated from the previous category by the production of food stuffs. Farming, Cattle, etc...)

Everything after doesn't compete by a *wide* margin.

What's that tell me?

We could afford to replace those workers with AI and Robots. And then keep them at home, while feeding them, and still make record profits in those two sectors.

And it also means we could afford to employ a lot of people in other areas like Science, Technology, and Research. Something that we as a country tend to shy away from doing, in fear that if too many people can't farm or cook food out country would fall apart at the seems.

Tell that to your underemployed contractors. Or your small town business men litigating other start-ups just so they don't have to compete. (I don't know if that reddit story is true, but resonance tells me everybody hears some story like that.)

So. The unemployment metrics are wrong, We aren't suffering from a lack of food or goods, we don't need more people in the food service and agriculture industry. If anything we need less. And, we don't have enough ability for people to work on science, technology, and research jobs.

But because people are hurting for money to pay rent and utilities, they have to get a job somewhere and the easiest place to get it? Food Service.

So the question I ask to landlords is; what're we doing here? Where do you expect to get money from if Congress won't raise the debt ceiling, and you won't pay more or make things more affordable?

We also learned that people value getting paid more than they value their own health. (Some for valid reasons, others not so much.)

We also learned that, even the people who are higher up on the food chain would rather other people work so they can make an income that doesn't cost so much of their own free time.

And that we're more worried about having menial jobs with which to pay laborers than we are about improving the quality of life for said laborers. Or using that labor in positions that actually mean something, instead of just having a job available so it's available.

Four Types of Play of Roger Caillois

French sociologist Roger Caillois developed four basic categories of play to characterize the roles in games and their intricacies:

Agon: This involves competition and is characterized by the presence of rules and the desire to win. It encompasses activities such as sports and board games

Alea: Games of chance fall under this category, where ability is not as important as luck in determining the result. Lottery games and gambling are two examples.

Mimicry: Role-playing, pretend play, and simulation are all part of this kind of play. People can take on several roles and identities, which encourages imagination and creativity.

Ilinx: Disorientation and vertigo are symptoms of ilinx. Activities that cause vertigo or changed perception, such spinning or some amusement park rides, fall under this category of play.

Caillois further divided these categories into two types of play:

Paida: This type of play is more spontaneous, exuberant, and unstructured. It corresponds to mimicry and ilinx and is associated with Mead's concept of pretend play.

Ludus: Ludus play is highly regulated and consists of structured, well-defined activities. It is translates to Mead's category of "games" and includes contests (agon) and games of chance (alea).

Are gaming communities becoming less about play and more about monetisation?

According to (Daniels, 2023), the conventional idea of play within these groups has been impacted by the growing tendency of commercialization in gaming communities. More and more gaming communities are concentrating on monetization techniques in order to leverage their user base and engagement. This shift is evident in various way:

Has the Covid-19 pandemic changed the public perception of gaming?

It is true that the Covid-19 pandemic has had a variety of effects on how the general public views games. The consequences of the epidemic on gaming behavior and players' well-being have been clarified by research and studies. Here are some key findings:
