Reading This Week 2024 #47
my laptop is getting its fan repaired/is sitting in the computer repair shop waiting for a new fan to arrive so my workflow for this week has been decimated. ah well. at least there's books
a few housekeeping notes: I'm starting to try using Storygraph again, same username, just trying to populate it with the books I read this year. I try to stay committed to not giving books star rating if I can help it, because it detracts from my reading experience. working slowly at giving the books i've read written reviews (sometimes just taking the thoughts i put in these posts for it).
Finished:
Until I Love Myself, Vol. 2 by Poppy Pesuyama, translated by Emily Balistrieri (speaking of storygraph, my thoughts/review of this book were on there first) I think this manga. moreso this second volume but also in the first, is about the circumstances of its own creation. so many of its chapters include discussions between Pesuyama and their editor regarding what they want to include and how they want to handle its publication
LEASH. DEPATURE. COMPULSION. by rozecrest on ao3
Tiger, Tiger by Petra Erika Nordlund *caught up. not finished. tiger tiger is an ongoing web comic. i'm bad at keeping track of ongoing serialized work i'm reading on these posts, so i've been slowly reading through it for a while. you should check it out for amazing art, cool worldbuilding, and messy queer characters
The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 7-9 written by Kieron Gillen, art by Jamie McKelvie (vol. 8 has a lot of guest artists and writers) okay now that i've finished this series i have some Thoughts. i think wicdiv is very very twisty in a way that was probably really fun when it was being released. however how i am reading the series, as a collection of trades that compile multiple issues together, it mostly reads as very cheap. the one exception to my negative opinions toward its twists and reveals is the revelation about the actual nature of the gods cycles and their powers, which felt earned in that it had genuine clues to its set up in the earlier issues, so there was no 'we hid key information from you ah ha arent you so surprised about how it actually went down' that rubbed me the wrong way about the rest of the twists.
Blue Box, Vol. 6 by Kouji Miura, translated by Christine Dashiell *wails* oh no the drama of an unrequited crush that's out in the open. the way that Taiki lashes out at Chono for continually talking about him as 'the guy she likes' when he doesn't feel the same for her and be reminded that she like-likes him makes him sad and uncomfortable about not requiting her feelings... these teenagers....
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Vol. 7-8 written by Kanehito Yamada, art by Tsukasa Abe, translated by Misa 'Japanese Ammo' aw yeah baby we're back on track. no more boring extending mage exam arc, we're back to the bread and butter of the series. short adventure vignettes
Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede, audiobook narrated by the cast of the Words Take Wing Repertory Company i picked this up for my mini mutuals book club! we rolled a random number on our list and this is what came up. juvenile fantasy about a princess who runs away and is voluntarily 'held captive' by a dragon. i did picture her relationship with her dragon as a lesbian romance, and i am correct. i will not be taking questions at this time
The Girl That Can't Get a Girlfriend by Mieri Hiranshi autobio manga about the author's struggling love life
"Boot Hill and the Fear of Dice" by Rutskarn essay/blog post about the author's experience using a highly lethal cowboy combat ttrpg to run a high intrigue high politics, limited combat tragedy game. sounds like he has an awesome table of players and really made me think about all of the work i'd want to do if i ever wanted to run my own political intrigue game
last night in a darkened room by bigdamnher0 on ao3 read to feel sad about dick grayson and tim drake
Started/Ongoing:
Provenance by Ann Leckie, audiobook narrated by Adjoa Andoh yay stand alone book in the imperial radch universe! i love crime.
Magic's Price by Mercedes Lackey, audiobook narrated by Gregory St. John SPOILERS but: extremely frustrated about the self-conscious narrative defense about the problematic age gap relationship (no its fine that his love interest is less than half his age! he's his soulmate reincarnated!). listen. i was ready to meet you at your freak. i will read some Weird Shit and enjoy my time with it. i was in fact delighted by the romantic comedy farce that the bard had to go through to get the hot older wizard to notice him. the younger party being the active pursuer of the relationship took us as far out of uncomfortable power dynamics as it reasonably could, and i was ready to root for the happy couple. but the minute you start going 'no no no its NOT weird. its completely fine actually for this magical reason' you've lost me. are you trying to tell me that it's not freak shit? that its just okay and not weird and No One needs to feel weird about it? embrace your freak shit or die

Every now and then I remember WicDiv, so I log into tumblr and I take a look at my old blog. It's a strange feeling.
While I wouldn't want to go back to that period of my life (since I enjoy the current period a lot more), I do really miss feeling such a strong connection to a comic book, and its community.
Looking forward every month to the next issue, writing posts about it, discussing theories with other people in the community, marveling at the amazing fan art.
I really do miss that.
I've been meaning to write a post about what WicDiv meant to me, but I can never seem to finish it. It's been on my drafts for almost 3 years now. Every time I remember WicDiv I write another paragraph. It's my Winds of Winter. Hopefully one day I'll finish it.

The Wicked + The Divine: Okay by Kieron Gillen. Art by Jamie McKelvie. Coloured by Matt Wilson. Lettering by Clayton Cowles.
Series: The Wicked + The Divine, #9 Read time: 1 Day Rating: 4/5
The quote: "Oh, David. I have done many awful necessary things. But you had a choice... ...and even at this late date, all your choices were bad. I'll tell you this. I've been around a long long time. And I am oh so bored of men like you." — Ananke
This is a great and fitting ending to a series. It wraps up the storylines well and leaves the reader with a message. It does this while delivering emotional hits with no less weight than other volumes (more importantly issues) in the series. The last pages are, I think, an echo of a moment earlier in the series. Characters are all given their own moments, moments to remind the reader that they are human, also reminders that "people never really die" (Laura) and the power of love.
This whole thing starts with a series of videos about Baal's last gig. One of them is just so adorable, Tom is an everyday person we've met before that I didn't see again. He appears in The Imperial Phase: Part 1 in a discussion with Persephone. "Please! We... have a question." "Uh-huh?" "Some texts say your cult wasn't allowed to say your name We... wanted to honour that. What do you want to be addressed as?" "The Destroyer." Tom does make it clear that this is him. He's not just a Persephone fan, he's a Baal fan. And like so many of us he thinks Inanna is hot. The video itself is him doing the fan thing, opening the ticket, queueing and going to the gig. It's an inside view of the gig and maybe a sense of the betrayal that fans will feel towards the remaining gods. Just after this three of our four heads (Jon, Inanna and Lucifer) get bodies back with the help of Nergal/Cameron after visiting him in the cathedral he has built for The Morrigan. He allows them to take The Morrigan's bodies in a moment of catharsis in a way. What I did notice is that Lucifer honours The Morrigan, specifically Badb, by keeping her red hair (though in Luci's iconic style).
I can honestly say that of all the books that have made me tear up this is the one I least expected. It's not the deaths per se it's the loss of potential and the way they happen. Just to be clear warnings for suicide, murder and attempted murder.
I don't remember seeing the birth names of all the gods before. This is a tiny bit spoilerly so read on at your own peril. • Persephone — Laura Wilson • Urðr — Cassandra • Skuld & Verðandi — Meredith and Zoe (the other two thirds of The Norn) • Lucifer — Eleanor • Baal — Valentine • Inanna — Zahid • Baphomet/Nergal — Cameron • The Morrigan — Marion • Dionysus — Umar • Woden — David Blake • Mimir — Jon Blake • Amaterasu — Emily Greenway • Tara — Aruna • I can't find names for Ananke, Minerva or Sakhmet in the volumes I have available.
I made the choice to skip Volume 8 of WicDiv because it is a collection of special issues set apart from the main storyline. If I was to come back and reread the series I would read Vol. 8: Old Is the New New. But am only half invested in the series, ie invested enough to want to know how the series ends but not invested enough to spend more time with the characters. As it is I have a bit of time pressure to finish the books and get them reviewed before I have to return them.

I feel like it's important to note that while leaving you those recs I was like "I can be a completely normal person about this" and then I did that, once again proving that I can never be a normal person about anything.
And in terms of like not superhero comics, if you do end up liking those, I'm also a big fan of Saga and Paper girls, though like not as much WicDiv to wholeheartedly recommend immediately (though Saga HAS nearly made me cry). (I'm also a fan of ManEaters, bit that is a VERY specific genre seeing as the plot is essentially that all menstruating people turn into Panthers, so like, it's fun but not something I'd suggest with my full chest). (All of those are by image comics- and I also completely understand if you don't want to go that direction)
nonny never think you have to be a normal person in my inbox when talking about things you enjoy! go nuts! we embrace the brainrot here!! and it was super nice to get a real long rec list even if i had already read most of them i appreciate that you took the time to do that for me and i really hope i do actually get back into reading comics like i want to bc im looking forward to checking out the ones i hadnt read!
is image comics the one thats like the subset of dc? okay google search seems to say no but in my google search ive discovered that image comics is what produced the old guard comics and while ive not actually read those comics bc i just dont vibe with the art i fucking lvoe that movie so huge win to image comics in my books.
also i watched the paper girls show on prime (may jeff bezos personally rot in hell for its cancellation) and it totally slipped my mind that it was basic on a comic series so i should def try to check that out
ive for sure heard the name saga before but i dont think i actually know anything, googling it im not sure if its really my particular vibe but i definitely wont rule out giving it a try down the line!
#fuck capitalism why do i have to 'work' when i could read comics!!! huh!!!!#comic recs#comics anon#abby replies#anon

since The Wicked + The Divine: 1923 special comes out tomorrow, I figured this is my last chance to post my concept of the 1923 pantheon before it’s officially not canon.
I wanted to depict the goddesses as analogous to three of the most groundbreaking women in 1920′s art. Sakhmet to Josephine Baker, Santa Muerte to Frida Kahlo, and Tiamat to Anna May Wong.
Sakhmet and Josephine Baker feels self explanatory (she literally had a pet cheetah).
Santa Muerte to me feels representative of the contradictory beauty and darkness of Frida’s art, and her defiant embrace of her outsider identity.
I chose Tiamat (the ancient Babylonian goddess of the salt sea) to align with Anna May Wong because she was both a mother goddess and a goddess of chaos and destruction, which aligns with Anna’s struggle between her personal identity as a kind, loving woman and the persona of the stereotypical Dragon Lady she had to adopt for most of her film roles.
Hopefully I didn’t botch any of my research/do any injustice to these three incredible women.

HeywI love your art 💕 I was wondering: what is your favorite version of Lucifer, in terms of character design? (Sandman/Sandman TV/Vertigo..)
thanks so much!!! :DDc
honestly, lucifer's character design varies so much based on who draws him, not just the comic/adaptation version, imo. i think i did a post like this before actually
in general my favorite versions of lucifer are the ones that emphasize the angel part, and the ones that emphasize the Gender. so i prefer versions of lucifer where his hair is a bit longer, and he's not a Buff Dude. i like when his design is a little more neutral
hence, my favorite versions of lucifer include (not really ordered since i like them for different reasons)
lucifer (nirvana). if i were to pick what lucifer looks like irl, i'd pick this version
i really like marc hempel's lucifer, from sandman. the little devil horns are cute, and i really really like how he's kind of, small? so many artists draw lucifer as Buff Male, and i appreciate that hempel draws him as. Not that. i could kick him in the shins.
lee garbett's lucifer is also very good. the eyelashes / eyeliner are 11/10 and his smirk gives me life. also the crayon thing utterly sends me and i love it so much
jill thompson's lucifer. like this is literally perfect. the eyelashes are flawless. also jill thompson's version of morpheus is one of my favorite depictions of him btw
gwendoline christie does SUCH an amazing job. like as a gay i think she is very cool and i love the way she's playing the character. the Gender of it all is also so good. i am watching respectfully i am enamored with the emotion she's putting into the character and also the Height is . Excellent. (and that one image in the red robe? oghgghgohgohg)
i'm mehh about other character designs from the lucifer (2000) series and sandman. frankly i really don't like a lot of the sandman design -- he's very Muscled sometimes. and he's just so...Cis Male-Coded in the art, while he's pretty explicitly not either? so i'm not a big fan of most of the lucifer series character art of him.
the covers, on the other hand, can be really lovely. like . the one where he's being carried by death. (for lucifer 2016, the best cover is the one w mazikeen and lucifer having a tender moment)
i'm also of the opinion that tom ellis is fun and cool, but the lucifer tv series really really feels soo different from sandman lucifer, so like, not really the same character? lucifer from wicdiv has a very good design tho -- not the same character but very good vibes nonetheless
i also don't realllyyyy like the lucifer (2018) version -- or rather, i liked him in the beginning w the beard, but later he just felt very. idk, the sharp acrylic nails are a Lot. that being said, i think theres something to be said about the idea of him having to rebuild his entire body while in agony, and what that form looks like because it was built while he was in a very vulnerable, hurt mindset. like, he's sharp and pointed and it fits with the character being harsh and violent in that moment, as a reaction to being imprisoned.
since lucifer is a very metaphysical character, there are some interesting character design bits that stick out to me that are his choices, e.g., his hair color. it seems to me that his hair is a sort of ginger, but that he sometimes alters it to be blond (this can be seen in lucifer #8 p. 19 when he comes back to lux). i don't have much of an explanation for this, but it's an expression of how he presents himself in the human world
his eye color. some artists draw it blue, some draw it gold; i personally like the interpretation that they're more gold when he's emotional & there's some more Power there.
his wings, too. it's clear he has a choice what type of wings to have, since it changes between panels -- i think it's most interesting to analyze when it changes, and what that reflects. for example, his wings become batlike when he and michael are falling into yggdrasil and remain so for a long time -- reflecting his emotional state throughout that part of the series.
anywayyyy there's your way too in-depth discussion of lucifer morningstar's character design. tldr im gay
