from the episode titles alone you can tell that the second half of the book is getting much more screen time than the first half. i think that makes perfect sense, one episode to get to camp and one to spend at camp, by the end of episode 2 it needs to be quest time. (it's actually really surprising in hindsight that the quest doesn't start until almost halfway through the book.)

episode 2 might feel the most rushed compared to the book for that reason, between meeting everyone and getting claimed and getting the quest etc. there might not be much time for capture the flag. (maybe some exposition is getting shifted to episode 1 at the cabin to help with that?)

i'm sure some events have been cut, but i don't think any chapters are likely to be cut wholesale. (for example the water bed scene could easily be cut, but there are other scenes in chapter 17 that probably need to stay.)

the episode 6/7 boundary is really a tossup, it's very possible that 6 just ends with escaping the hotel. ultimately i think they'll have wanted to end 6 on a more suspenseful note than "oh no we only have 1 day left!" but it's the one i'm least confident in for sure.

Well, the Lady Dye Yarns drama has exploded in ways no one saw coming.

Lady Dye Yarns is a hand dye yarn business in Boston.  Diane, the owner, is famously disorganized.  There have been issues with yarn and club kits/boxes shipping late the entire ten years the company has been in business.

It got especially bad this year.  She only shipped out 80% of the winter boxes from last year and made an IG live that pretty much said that was good enough.  The remaining 20% of people who had bought the boxes were pissed.  They wanted either their yarn or their money back.

She also stated not to email her because she didn’t really answer emails.  As a business.  And then said every time she got an email it pushed the important emails down on the list and made them harder to find.  There were lots of excuses.

Then, when people started doing chargebacks on their credit cards, because she was refusing to process refunds, she would just let the chargeback process go through quietly.  Meaning it took ninety days to go through because she refuses to respond to banks.  At all.

And this year she also hasn’t shipped out nearly all of her yarn boxes and kits, or shipped a few of them very late.  People are reporting they haven’t received the first three sock kits for this year (it’s a four sock kit a year membership), she was supposed to ship a bunch of kits in August and never did.

Then she never shipped a $10,000 shipment to a wholesaler, who is now having to get the money back via a dispute with the bank because she’s refusing to respond or do anything about it.

Total shit show.  

While all this is going on she is bragging about how she’s going to be on the Today Show and QVC and The View next year.  No one thinks her business will be around next year, she currently owes $14,000+ in refunds, but she is really enjoying hyping up how much bigger her business is growing.

She’s also hosting a lot of activist meetings and raising money for charities at the same time.  Which normally no one would care about, except she isn’t telling anyone how much money she’s raised for charities, and almost never says what charities the money has been raised for either.  So she’s just saying she’s raising money for a charity genre, such as women’s reproductive rights, but not which exact charity or how much is donated.  But she is saying a percentage of sales is going to charity.

This is suspicious and leaves people wondering if she’s pocketing the cash, or using it to prop up her failing business.

Then it came out yesterday that it’s even worse.  

She’s distributing patterns without paying or informing the designers.  Five patterns have been confirmed distributed without payment or permission so far.  Which means Diane is charging extra for the kits she’s sending out to include the pattern, and just pocketing the cash that should have been going to the pattern designers.

It’s an awful situation.

I think the one thing that is hilarious in it is that she, for the last year, no matter the kit theme, has only been sending out Bridgerton themed yarns.  Apparently that’s the only thing she’s dyed all year.  So everything is Bridgerton now!  The Sherlock boxes were Bridgerton yarn, the Spaceballs boxes were Bridgerton yarn, everything!

She’s also claiming that she can’t send out dyed sock yarn because there’s not a single mill in the world with a supply of sock yarn for sale because of pandemic related shortages.  Many other hand dyers have happily pointed out that that is false, sock yarn is not in short supply.  The thought is that the suppliers have requested payment up front, and she doesn’t have the cash.

But yeah, so, all sorts of yarn drama in the yarn world.  Fun times!

A crack in the glass

This post is incredibly difficult to write, there's just so much to process. Except for putting on the radio this morning with my alarm, I haven't had any music on since Saturday night...

I didn't even make coffee this morning. Today I worked while putting together the Lego I got for my birthday and making some paintings. (You already saw one in the previous post, there's another I'll post after this one, after which this title will make more sense.)

The Viking look is kind of my thing now? All of the pieces of random medieval/Viking garb stuff I'd ordered arrived just in time for this magnificent outfit inspired by the album cover colors.

(I also had a blue bandana over my hair which isn't in this picture, and it was cold so I ditched the hand fan.)

The gaggle (again)

I noticed the gaggle almost right away upon getting my stuff dropped off at the coat check, so, as had been suggested, went over to say hi. So who are they really? The gaggle consists of a Finnish couple and a German couple. They were suuuuuuper wasted that other time in Tampere (which explains a LOT, really) and yeah they seem the party type (which isn't MY type, but I've had a lot of practice awkwardly bullshitting along in undergrad).

The Finnish woman was like "yeah we've spoken crappy English with each other for 10 years"; at least she has not found that to be a barrier to making friends... The German guy was going on about how they've gotten sometimes to hang out and get drinks and other goodies with the band after shows and I'm thinking what if I glommed myself onto these people but I really can't do the party personality thing.

The number of chairs in this room is too damn high

That is, way over 1000 seats. I was close to the middle, so you're seeing only like half the width of the room here. Kinda sucked that the floor was just folding chairs but at least there's more elbow room than if we were jammed into a crowd.

Fanclub Founder was next to me (again! what are the chances?? she's local though).

Before I forget, the music stuff

The performance was being taped for their next live album (yay!). They didn't mention this until a number of songs in, but it had the effect of emboldening people to sing along more loudly.

I hope they don't use this take of Samaan mutkaan kaatunut though, because there were some things I didn't like about it. (For one, there's a minor goof in the intro and for two, they kinda went straight into the preprogrammed transition track rather than letting the song end on the piano motif.)

Fanclub Founder doesn't know this (and I think she may have thought my reaction interesting) but Senpai can REALLY STOP MOTIONING AT ME ON THE ONE LINE ANY TIME NOW

Fanclub Founder handed up a wholesale box of mints before they lined up for bows, which made Very Serious Security Staff a little nervous (it's not the first time I have seen somebody make this offering).

Hey this wide-angle thing on my phone is great, I can actually get all 18 of them into the picture from the first row. (Also, that is TOO MANY!!)

The aftermath

The gaggle went almost immediately to the adjoining bar after the performance. At some point a gaggle guy popped out to ask me whether I'd seen any of the band members yet. I hadn't, so he went back to the bar.

The bathroom queue was easing up—and as I returned to the lobby after, I heard the final strains (again!) of Happy Birthday from one corner and it turned out the whole ladies' quartet was there with somebody, who was shedding tears of joy. [1]

I should probably further point out here that at least Heini and Jepa have also solo careers independent of the band so they have a bit of their own cult followings. (They are also incredibly friendly, so there's that.)

So yeah I missed my chance there... but I did catch the two of them to get their playing card pictures signed.

Blonde fangirl appears to attended alone (minus second blonde fangirl), and tells me I'm not the first person to collect signatures on the cards, but how would I know, I don't come from the kind of background that would enable me to go to art school AND for all intents and purposes LITERALLY follow them around to EVERY show. But in the interest of fairness I asked her to sign the card with her dedication note on it too.

I managed to flag down a couple more people for their signatures, but after that, the whole place was pretty much cleared out and the folks working the merch table even put everything away already before Pate showed up to take the stuff out back. He offered to take my stack of cards and get them signed by whoever was still around. The building is absolutely massive so it took a while and I'm loitering awkwardly waiting for him to come back because by this point the place was deserted and it was just Very Serious Security Staff watching me impatiently wondering when I was gonna get the heck out of there.

Anyway, he suggested I could talk to merch lady next time before the show and she could help get the last two signatures sorted. [2]

The after-aftermath

I'm sad I didn't get to talk to Senpai, especially since it was (almost) my birthday. I know it's just life and I'm nothing more than just one random fangirl and I shouldn't intrude on their (professional) lives nor expect anything special.

But on the other hand... some of the other groupies HAVE had special treatment? Like blonde fangirl and her illustrations on the cards? And the gaggle have had the privilege of partying with them? How do I earn this?? Is it like a five-year groupie privilege or something (I'm making this up)??

They weren't going straight home either; I'd asked Pate and got a little clingy about it and was politely told to go away. The rest of the players had left after he got the signatures for me, and it was just him and the roadies who were still there packing stuff. The gaggle reappeared from the bar and he also sent them away after a few words. Next time I'm around it will be the end of the spring tour so if it were me, I certainly wouldn't want any outsiders crashing THAT party (and it wouldn't be my birthday anymore anyway).

So I went back to my lodgings and cried for half an hour, left an apology on his Instagram, and ate Hesburger on the floor while crying for another half hour:

...I know I'm being a little unreasonable. I desperately want to be around people who care that I'm having fun, who value my presence and enthusiasm, and who kind of see me as an individual on some level (however superficially), and those rare occasions when I am, I never want them to end.

This fire is going to die if I keep just feeling so bitter and alone after these shows. The whole run this spring of what will be 5 shows in 3 months is a bit…mentally taxing, tbh. Especially so because of this. But for now seeing Senpai is still worth it for its own sake, and I would lose even more if I stopped going and just stayed home. [3]

As a small consolation (OK it was not actually the intention but let's call it that) I had organized a small birthday meetup for geocachers Sunday afternoon (which was my birthday proper anyway). I don't even geocache all that much anymore, and I was hoping I'd have cool "shenanigans with Senpai" stories to tell, but at least it was 45 minutes of things actually being "officially" about me. (Also, there were Swedish-speakers!)

[3] Incidentally the Fall tour schedule was published today and the only date I kinda even feel like going to is in December. They're Kind of a Big Deal enough now that they're booking a lot of arena and resort shows and I'm just trying to avoid those for as long as I can, because like this one felt like way too many people. even if I didn't need to look at them from the first row.

From last time: Very Serious Security Staff walked over to get somebody to put their (small) paper sign away (and at another point mistook somebody's white phone case as one) Turns out the latter was actually Very Serious Security Staff being (mistakenly) Very Serious against people filming the performance. They were either misinformed or simply didn't ask the band whether this was allowed, because they have never forbidden it, and have even encouraged it, so people who weren't there can enjoy it too. (But OK be reasonable and don't just film the whole thing???) I mean heck, even boyfriend and I both filmed a few clips.

There was some debate over whether it was appropriate that people sang along and stood and danced (at an ostensibly sit-down show), especially for those on the floor level where we were just chairs instead of tiered seating. This is a bit of a tough one, since they were also kind of encouraging this (considering you usually want crowd noises on a live recording). I don't (really) dance but I certainly sing/shout to everything I'm confident to the words for and dramatically gesticulate (what I lack in vocal technique I compensate with body language), and it was nice to learn that Fanclub Founder actually appreciates the latter. (Feelings seemed a bit ... cold the last time we met.)

The silence that settled over the room was deafening, and a tension settled in the air that made the whole atmosphere feel brittle, as though any movement would shatter it like glass. Lion-O’s eyes narrowed as distrust bubbled up, but if the other cat noticed it, he didn’t particularly seem to care.

“Should we ask–” Tygra started, and then broke off, hand almost at his whip.

“You in with Mumm-Ra?” Panthro asked bluntly, since no one else seemed willing.

“What? No. I knew a witch. There’s more magic to the world than just the darker kind, you know. He dragged me to the nearest temple and set about hauling my soul back from the otherworld. That temple happened to be here, which is where I met Pallas.”

“And your witch?” Panthro asked warily.

“Left as soon as the snow broke. I say I knew him for a reason–I came back. He didn’t think I came back right. When someone’s string of fate is cut, as far as he tells it, you can’t get it back wholesale. It returns frayed, different. I made a little journey around third-earth, trying to figure myself out, but I always came home to Pallas,” he reached over, laying a hand on the older cat’s shoulder, “when I heard you lot were coming up to see us–well. Who could turn down an opportunity to see the King of Thundera in the flesh?”

“Touching,” Lion-O deadpanned, “you understand if we still find this…unsettling?”

“I understand,” Norsk nodded, “but I’m hoping it won’t keep you from letting me join you.” Lion-O looked to the others, a little shocked. Wilykit seemed perfectly at ease, Wilykat seemed fixated on the drop spindle’s movements, and Cheetara’s expression was implacable. There was something going on, there–she slipped her hand into Tygra’s, and both seemed to drop a little tension in their shoulders. Panthro, while wary, was seemingly just trying to ignore the elderly cat lady who’d gotten vaguely in his personal space. Only Lion-O was wary, then. His own paranoia was working against him. He forced the tension from his shoulders, taking a deep breath.

“Why would you want to join us, Norsk?”

“There’s more for me to see out there, more pieces I haven’t put back together. Being in the room with other cats…it helps. And if I don’t, you’re going to get caught in a snowstorm and die. That’s a factor.” He picked up the dried blue yarn, a set of needles, and began clicking away with them with seemingly no cares in the world.

“He won’t have a home to return to either, soon,” Pallas said, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath.

“You’re kicking him out?” Wilykit asked, tilting her head.

“She’s dying,” Cheetara intuited.

“I’d rather be alone when I do,” Pallas nodded, “Ignoble to die in any way but battle. I’m going to leave my spirit to guard the temple here, if I’ve got any say in it, but I don’t want company.”

“And who am I,” Norsk said tensely, looking away, “to deny an old woman her wishes.”

“You want to come with us,” Lion-O circled back, for lack of better options, “it’s not easy travel. We’ve got a despot to take down, we’re on a clock–there won’t be time for any of…this.” He gestured to the tapestries on the walls.

“I’ll assume that wasn’t meant to sound shitty,” Norsk raised an eyebrow, “but…you’re looking to take down a tyrant. What after? Thundera subsisted as an empire through the subjugation of other populations–infrastructure. If you’re a better king than your father, you’ll put the imperialism aside, but even then–who makes your clothes? Who grows your grain? Who builds your buildings–do you have architectural sense? Thundera was beautiful and strong because our people valued strength and beauty. You’re a tactician, a wartime king, but what are you going to do when it’s time for peace and no one’s there to darn your socks?”

“I–huh.” Lion-O paused, taking all of that in.

“Valuable enough yet?” Norsk asked, looking at Lion-O over his glasses.

“I…”

“Yes,” Tygra cut in, “he means to say yes.”

Settling in for the night was a chore as the wind outside howled its mournful song, and it ended up happening that Lion-O was tucked into one corner by the hearth, Norsk perched in the rafters above him. The others had long since fallen asleep, Panthro snoring loudly enough to shake the small hut. Norsk looked down at Lion-O with watchful eyes, and Lion-O found he had a hard time meeting his gaze.

“I died once too,” Lion-O spoke, softly enough that he wasn’t sure of the other cat could hear him, “and I nearly sold my soul to come back.”

“You look good for someone soulless.”

“I got it back!” Lion-O sputtered, then clamped a hand over his mouth for fear of being too loud. Norsk gave him a small smile and hopped down from the rafters, landing almost too close for comfort. His back was to the fire, so he was only the suggestion of a silhouette, but Lion-O could still feel those wide amber eyes on him.

“You got it back,” Norsk said, “go on?”

“It was seen as proof of my devotion to my people, that I was willing to sell it at all. So they didn’t take it, and…here I am.”

“A second chance at life?”

“And I still feel like I’m wasting it,” he said wryly.

“I think you’re on a noble quest. Anything you believe in isn’t a waste.”

“What do you believe in, Norsk?” Lion-O asked, feeling strangely warm for reasons he didn’t quite understand.

“Finding myself. And I’ve got a quest too,” he smiled, “I had friends before coming here. Doon, my witch. Scraps. She’s good at paper magic. The three of us…we were good together. Scraps wants me to figure out how to make silk for her magic, so she doesn’t have to use paper, and Doon volunteered to help figure out the arcane theory behind it. Even though Doon won’t have me right now…I want to bring something back to them.”

“Silk?”

“Silk.” Norsk set down his knitting and leaned forward, sliding a finger under one of Lion-O’s pauldron in order to touch the thin but sturdy chemise he wore under it.

Lion-O stilled, heart hammering away even when Norsk pulled back. His eyes stayed on the other cat’s hand, the sharp claws glinting in the low light. His mouth went dry, and Lion-O started questioning some things very quickly.

“You should sleep,” Norsk said, seemingly oblivious, “we’ll want to set out before the morning sun turns the snow to slush.” He hopped back up to the rafters, and Lion-O fell into a fitful sort of sleep, putting away any new questions he had.

“HELPFUL RESPONSE AT CLOTHING ROOM,” Montreal Gazette. November 16, 1932. Page 5. ---- Distribution of. Boots and Garments Being Speeded Up Toward Demand --- WORKERS ON OVERTIME ---- Central Emergency Clothing Department Effecting Remarkable Results in Transforming Old Material ---- Distribution of boots and clothing has been speeded up at the Central Emergency Clothing Department on Lagauchetiere street as a result of the appeal made through the columns of The Gazette last Saturday. Last week the organization was 1,100 orders behind, now they are catching up with the demand at the rate of 300 parcels of assorted clothing a day. 

The committee received over $250 during the week-end and they promptly invested this money in a purchase of boots, the demand for which continues incessantly. As The Gazette reporter arrived at the clothing room in the basement premises loaned by Desbarats and Company, an electrically driven boot repairing and finishing machine donated by the United Shoe Machinery Company was being hoisted out of a truck. By today it will be installed and working overtime in the effort to catch up with repairs on discarded boots and shoes which five cobblers have been frantically employed on. 

In the department are 20 sewing women and 11 sorters, packers, and collectors in addition to volunteer workers. As clothing comes in, it is fumigated and sorted. Rack upon rack of all kinds of clothing stand in rows; true they are hastily constructed racks of white wood knocked together at little expense. The sewing women spend their time on repairs and "make downs," producing unbelievably chic children's clothing from such things as white duck trousers. 

Bargains from the wholesale houses are avidly taken advantage of and huge quantities of woolen and cotton underclothing, socks, and men's overcoats have been bought at very reasonable prices. 

Here is a typical order from the Italian United Church, Just as it was checked by the packer: lady's overcoat, man's underwear, socks, three pairs boy's stockings, lady's dress, boy's suit, pair of man's boots, pair of boy’s shoes. Much of this parcel was new. 

DISTRIBUTION RECORDS. Another from St. Mary's Church consisted entirely of shoes for a family of five. The white collar people are also being looked after, as was seen by a requisition from the registration bureau for office workers in the Sun Life Building which called for six pairs of shoes and rubbers. Each individual is card-indexed and registered so that a record is kept of distribution and duplication is avoided. 

Requisitions are still pouring in at the rate of 100 a day, Mrs. A. H. Dalrymple, chairman of the committee, said. The clothing room is operated jointly by t e Family Welfare Association and the Emergency Unemployment Relief Committee to provide clothing for Protestant families suffering through unemployment and other committee has been enlarged recently to include representatives of each Protestant Denomination in the city and the new committee will hold its first meeting tomorrow. The De Luxe Taxi service is still carrying on the work of free delivery: a call to them will take much needed clothes and discarded shoes to their proper destination.
