"I want to convert Hindus to Hinduism..."
In 1938, Jawaharlal Nehru started a newspaper called National Herald to act as a voicepiece for the Indian National Congress in its fight for India's independence. Its motto was - Freedom is in peril. Defend it with all your might.
A few years later, the newspaper attracted a young journalist in his late twenties - Balakrishnan Menon, who soon became known for his straight forward, incisive and hard hitting writings on politico-socio-economic conditions of the time.
Not only did Balan, as he was called, hit out against the British, he was also sceptical of the countless Hindu sadhus and sanyasis he had met right from his childhood. So, in a spur of journalistic zeal, in 1947, he set out for Rishikesh, to Swami Sivananda's ashram - The Divine Life Society - to write an exposé of the sadhus. He wanted to find out how the sadhus were "keeping up the bluff amongst the masses." He gave himself two days to achieve his objective.
It so happened that he stayed in the ashram for close to a month, and when he came back, the Sceptic had turned Seeker. In due course, the Seeker returned to Rishikesh, took diksha or initiation, became a monk, realised himself, took the country by storm, became an apostle of Hindu renaissance, went global, took the world by storm, came back and founded the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. He spent his life teaching Hinduism to Hindus. The Seeker had turned Master!
The sceptic, Balakrishnan Menon, had become the consummate Jnana Yogi, Swami Chinmayananda.
Therein lies a tale!
Balakrishna Menon was born in Ernakulam, Kerala, in 1916, in a very well-to-do family. His father was a prominent judge. He completed his graduation in Kerala and went to Lucknow to do his post-graduation in Literature and Law, while parallely pursuing a course in Journalism. Though he hailed from a religious family, he had a superficial interest of the strict religious routines and followed them mechanically. His first real brush with spirituality was in 1936, when he visited the eminent sage, Sri Ramana Maharshi. By his own account, when Ramana Maharshi looked at him, he experienced a thrill of spiritual enlightenment which, at the time, he promptly rationalised as being mere hypnotism.
Balan joined the independence movement, especially the Quit India movement in 1942 and subsequent initiatives and was promptly arrested for his efforts. In jail, he fell sick and caught typhus. In the middle of the night, he was dragged to the road and left there to die. Some kind soul took him and nursed him back to health. He recovered and in due course, joined the National Herald as a journalist, where he earned quite a good name for himself. And then Rishikesh happened.
So, at the age of 31, he came back from Swami Sivanand's ashram in Rishikesh, a sceptic-turned-seeker and began reading the Hindu scriptures and other spiritual books. He couldn't survive the world for long. On 25th February, 1949, aged 33, Balakrishnan Menon renounced the world, and was reborn as Swami Chinmayananda Saraswati, under the initiation of the very man he had set out to expose. The below snap captures that day. The imposing hulk of a man, fourth from your left is Swami Sivananda. The guy next to him is Swami Chinmayananda.
Recognizing Chinmayananda's sharp intellect and inclination towards knowledge, Swami Sivanada sent him to one of the greatest Vedantic masters of his time, Swami Tapovan Maharaj of Uttarkashi. Chinmayananda devoted the next few years of his life to an intensive study of Vedanta under his tutelage, leading an extremely austere lifestyle and undergoing a rigorous study of the scriptures. In just two short years, the once rational skeptic gained inner peace and spiritual enlightenment. Here is a photo of Swami Chinmayananda at the feet of his guru, Swami Tapovan Maharaj.
In 1951, with his Guru's blessings, he left the Himalayas on an all-India tour to visit places of worship and to see how Hindu religious heritage was being handed down. He was extremely disappointed with what was doled out in the name of Hinduism. So, on 23rd December, 1951, in Pune, he organized the first of his many, many Jnana Yagnas - lectures on Hindu scriptures, in English! This was practically unheard of. Till then, scriptures were taught to select males, in Sanskrit. This first Jnana Yagna was held in a temple, men and women of all strata were invited. Only seven people came for the first few days. Slowly, things changed. His second Jnana Yagna held in Madras had to be an outdoor event.
At the end of the Madras Gnana Yagna, a few people came and expressed the desire to create a forum for the study and discussion of Vedanta. Hence was born the Chinmaya Mission, on 8th August, 1953. Today, Chinmaya Mission Trust administers Chinmaya Vidyalayas (schools), Bala Vihars (study groups for children), Chinmaya Yuva Kendras (the global youth wing) and Devi Groups (study groups for adults).
What made Swami Chinmayananda connect so well with his listeners was his simple and contemporary way of explaining complicated stuff.
In 1965, Swami Chinmayananda set out on his first global teaching tour, covering 39 cities in 18 countries - Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, United States, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece and Lebanon. Many such trips followed. His fame had spread to all parts of the globe.
Eventually, Chinmaya Mission West was formed to co-ordinate the growing spiritual movement in the United States. And, Chinmaya International Foundation, an international library and research center, was also founded in the village Veliyanad, in Eranakulam District in Kerala.
Soon dignitaries from around the world were coming to meet him. In 1981, the Dalai Lama met him in his Sidhbari ashram in Himachal Pradesh.
In 1964, RSS pracharak S S Apte and Swami Chinmayananda founded the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, with the objective of introducing the glory of Hinduism to the global diaspora. As Swamiji put it succinctly, the VHP aimed to convert Hindus back to Hinduism.
Post script:
Today, there are about 80 Chinmaya Vidyalayas in India and one outside India, in Trinidad, West Indies. Out of these 81 is a Chinmaya Vidyalaya in a small village in Odisha, called Therubali. I did my schooling, right from KG to Std XII from Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Therubali.
I dedicate this post to the sceptic Balan, who turned Seeker, had the guts to find his Guru and become a Master - Swami Chinmayananda.
I also dedicate this post to my batch of 1995, who got together recently. We put together a nice little video.

Why is a 2,500-year-old epic dominating polls in modern India?

Image caption Many Hindus see the Ramayana’s protagonist, Ram, as a hero
With the Indian general election under way, the Ramayana, a 2,500-year-old Hindu mythological epic, is back in the spotlight. The BBC’s religious affairs reporter Priyanka Pathak explains why.
This year, like in previous elections, the conversation among many hardline Hindus has returned to the epic Ramayana and its protagonist, Ram.
A longstanding demand to construct a temple in the northern city of Ayodhya – a key point of tension between Hindus and Muslims – which Hindus believe is Ram’s birthplace, has become louder in recent months.
Hardline Hindus want the temple built on the same spot where a 16th Century mosque was demolished by Hindu mobs in 1992. They believe the Babri mosque was built after the destruction of a Hindu temple by a Muslim invader.
India’s Ayodhya site: Masses gather as Hindu-Muslim dispute simmers
The governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has promised, once again, to reconstruct the Ram Mandir (temple) in its election manifesto.
Like in previous elections, they hope that this pledge will draw in more Hindu voters. They also organised Hindu religious festivals on a grand scale in the lead-up to the polls.
On 12 April, a large gathering of right-wing organisations was held at the iconic Ram Lila Maidan, a sprawling ground named after the god in the centre of the capital, Delhi, to celebrate “Ram’s birthday”.
People dressed in saffron robes wielded swords as they chanted “Jai Shree Ram”, which translates from the Hindi to “Hail Lord Ram”. They shouted slogans, reiterating their promise to Ram that they would reconstruct the temple.
What is the story of the Ramayana?
Image copyright Heritage Images/Getty
The epic tells the story of Ram, a beloved prince who is unaware of his own divinity
On the eve of his coronation, he is banished from his kingdom for 14 years by his father at the behest of his stepmother
With his wife, Sita, and brother, Lakshman, he wanders through India’s forests – until the 10-headed demon king Ravana abducts Sita
Ram then fights and defeats Ravana to rescue Sita after which he establishes a just kingdom
The story of Ram’s pursuit of righteousness has made him a symbol of self-sacrifice and heroism for many Hindus
He is why this epic remains potent and has dominated India’s political discourse
Experts believe that the movement to build the temple, spearheaded by a powerful Hindu nationalist organisation called the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has helped craft some sort of a collective Hindu identity in India.
This idea is something that the RSS, the ideological fountainhead of the BJP, has cultivated since the 19th Century.
However, the movement found its zeitgeist moment only a century later.

Image caption People in Ahmedabad city sitting along the road and watching a television series on the Ramayana
Several things happened almost concurrently during the late 1980s. First, a television show on the epic reminded 80 million viewers of the story and rekindled a love for its hero.
The serial broadcast a standardised story of the Ramayana, pulled together from many versions and variants. There is no official version of this sprawling epic although historical scholars consider the version by Valmiki, a sage and Sanskrit poet, to be the most authentic.
But really there are as many as 3,000 retellings of the story in around 22 languages, including some that eulogise Ravana while others say it was actually Ram’s brother Lakshman who killed the demon king.
India votes 2019
But what the television show did was give India a single narrative of the Ramayana. It also gave a single religion to a country “that was diverse and plural and included many different ways to be Indian”, says Arshia Sattar, a doctorate in south Asian languages, who has translated Valmiki’s Ramayana from Sanskrit into English.
The second big moment came in the late 1980s, when the Congress party led by Rajiv Gandhi – which has always styled itself as secular – decided to lay the foundation stone of the temple in Ayodhya with the help of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), a right-wing outfit, to woo Hindu votes in a close election.
The plan didn’t work – instead, it paved the way for the BJP, still a young party at the time, to seize what they saw as an opportunity to galvanise Hindu voters.
In September 1989, the party’s then president LK Advani launched a nationwide march for the temple. Bricks began to move from around India for the construction of the temple. The campaign was successful in mobilising communal sentiments and set in motion a series of events that would result in the demolition of the mosque. This, in turn, triggered nationwide riots.

Image caption Hindu activists are demanding the construction of the Ram Temple
But in the next elections, the BJP swept the polls. From that moment forward, the party – which was 12 years old at the time – became a national heavyweight.
It took its place as either the party leading the ruling government alliance or as the leading opposition party. For the BJP, the Ayodhya issue became a way to consolidate Hindu votes – something that used to be fragmented along caste lines.
This now well-known version of the epic, championing Ram, also became a convenient point for other Hindu organisations to rally around. This meant that other versions of the epic began to be stamped out.
For instance, in 2011, a Hindu nationalist student union and other affiliated right-wing groups succeeded in forcing Delhi University to drop an essay by the late poet and Ramayana scholar AK Ramanujan, which questioned how many versions of the epic existed, from its history curriculum.
“This may have been part of the general climate of intolerance and the battle over who had the right to tell the country’s history and its myths that was part of the Indian landscape between the 1980s and the 2000s,” literary critic and author Nilanjana Roy wrote of the incident in her blog in 2011.
Image copyright Getty Images
Image caption Ram fights and defeats the ten-headed demon Ravana in the Hindu epic
But for hardline Hindus, the cultural loss of other versions is simply collateral damage.
They believe that a sort of Hindu renaissance can be built around the epic, allowing Hindus to band together and revive their religion as a way of life that they believe was lost and can be re-established.
For instance, in September 2017, the Uttarakhand state minister for alternative medicine, proposed spending $3.6m (POUND) to find Sanjeevani – a mythical, glow-in-the-dark herb, described in the epic as having saved Ram and Lakshman from certain death.
The deputy chief minister of Uttar Pradesh has also suggested that science was so advanced during the time of the Ramayana that Sita was actually a test-tube baby. And the vice chancellor of an Indian university has claimed that Ravana, had a fleet of airplanes.
A series of such examples from Indian politicians and scholars can be seen as an attempt to bolster pride in the mythological epic. But they also evoke a nostalgia for a grand past, reawakening hope for a future that repeats the great feats of distance ancestors.

Who founded Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)..?
RSS / VHP & Hindu Mahasabha were set before independence by the British ( Rothschilds ) Rulers to DEFEAT Hindu Nationalism in India. After India became Independent they continued to be managed by STOOGES OF Rothschilds.
VHP was founded by Master Tara Singh , a British loyalist. He was a "..TATTU.." of Sir Malcom Hailey. Though Born a Hindu, Master Tara Singh, in his later life converted to Sikhism. In the meantime ,in the year July 1925, the British created Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (“Committee of Shrine Management”) to manage Gurudwaras across India , which was headed by Master Tara Singh and other Tat Khalsa Activists. Master Tara Singh and other Tat Khalsa Activists removed the Hindu idols from Gurudwaras and evicted the traditional pujaris / mahants (guardians , accusing them of theft ). Before British Rule, all Gurudwaras in India & Pakistan worshipped Hindu Gods ( Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva ) and Goddesses. British Rulers DELIBERATELY promoted Tat Khalsa Groups, who FALSELY claimed that Sikh Gurus had WARNED against worship of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Tat Khalsa Groups ( headed by Master Tara Singh - a convert to Sikhism ) promoted worship of One GOD and claimed that Sikh Gurus were all against Hindu customs and Rituals. This was COMPLETELY FALSE. Sir Malcom Hailey used Master Tara Singh , a British loyalist in all these activities. British Rulers DELIBERATELY pushed Sikhs towards adopting Islamic Customs ( like worhsip of One God). British Rulers using Tat Khalsa Groups DESTROYED all Ancient Paintings of Sikh Gurus, where they wore Rudrakshas with kumkum tilak / vibhuti ..etc and commissioned new paintings in which Sikhs Gurus were dressed up like Sufi Saints of Islam. Tat Khalsa Groups were originally STOOGES of Mughal Rulers. The Mughal Emperor Farukhusear was unable to militarily confront Banda Singh Bahadur ( Lakhman Dev), so he corresponded with Mata Sundari ( 2nd wife of Guru Gobind Singh ) telling her that he wanted peace with the Sikhs. After being offered sops and concessions, Mata Sundari living in Delhi issued a hukam-nama ( Islamic type fatwa ) declared Banda is a Hindu and those Sikhs who will support Banda will be considered out of Sikhism. Later Tat Khalsa Groups of Sikhs, joined Mughal Forces in a war against Banda Singh Bahadur. This was after Mata Sundari ( 2nd wife of Guru Gobind Singh ) claimed that Battles fought by Banda Singh Bahadur against Mughal Rulers, were NOT in consonance with the high principles of Sikhism - and that excommunicated him. Tat Khalsa Groups switched sides to fight for Mughal Rulers in return for Sops and concessions. They were all loyal to Mata Sundari ( 2nd wife of Guru Gobind Singh ), who was opposed to Banda Singh Bahadur. British ( Rothschilds) Rulers DELIBERATELY wiped off some importants parts of Sikh History to promote Tat Khalsa Groups within Sikhsim to create a DEEP wedge between Hindus and Sikhs. After india became independent he demanded a Sikh-majority state in Punjab and can be considered as the ORIGINAL mentor of Khalistanis. Khalistani Movement, Dalit Movement ( under BR Ambedkar ) and Dravadian Movement ( under EVR Periyar ) were sponsored by British ( Rothschilds) Rulers with the help of Indian stooges to divide Hindus.
Just like the British Government set up Indian National Congress filled with their own TYPE of Freedom Fighters, they also created "...NAQLI.." Hindutva Organisations - RSS , VHP and Hindu Mahasabha, headed by their own people.

On 28 September 2014, a 19,000 strong crowd comprised predominantly of Indian Americans, gathered in Madison Square Garden in New York City. They were there to cheer on a man who less than a decade ago had been banned from travelling to the US for his role in the 2002 Gujarat massacre. Striding into centre stage now as the newly elected Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi thanked the audience for the “kind of love [that] has not been given to any Indian leader ever”. This validation by overseas Indians, he said, was a loan that he would repay by “forming the India of [their] dreams,” by making it easier for the cheering crowds and their extended community to return to India and bring their talents back to the homeland. In less euphemistic terms, Modi’s message, as reiterated in his series of meetings with Indian American entrepreneurs, was that his government was committed to ensuring that India would be open for business, particularly for its diaspora.
‘A time to return’
A few weeks after Modi’s triumphant return from New York, Sushma Swaraj, India’s new external affairs minister, who also happens to be responsible for the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, echoed this message in a different context. Since 2007, the Indian government had been involved in organising regional Pravasi Bharatiya Divas conferences around the world as a way to “allow participation of the Indian diaspora” who were unable to attend the annual meetings held in India. Inaugurating the London meeting in October 2014, Swaraj told her audience that “now is the time to come to India”, since there were “immense opportunities” waiting for them, especially in the fields of “manufacturing, infrastructure development, education, health… science and technology, research and innovation”. To facilitate this participation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government was committed to providing “efficiency, accountability, speedy decision making… and [a] favourable business environment”. Should the members of the hugely successful overseas Indian community experience any difficulty or bureaucratic red tape in their efforts to return to their homeland and participate in “India’s growth story”, all they needed to do was to let the minister know and she would solve their problems.
The fact that the BJP government has been courting a particular layer of the expatriate Indian community by promising new investment opportunities, a more benign bureaucracy, and generally favorable business climes, is in and of itself not particularly surprising. It is a well-known fact that amongst the major political parties in India, the BJP is perhaps the best connected to various diaspora associations, particularly in North America. The Hindutva network, as numerous scholarly and investigative works over the past two decades have pointed out, puts the BJP in a unique situation. The centre of this network is of course the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which is a cadre organisation that emphasises the importance of spreading the ideology of the Hindu Rashtra. The RSS, connected as it is to numerous think tanks, grassroots and relief organisations, led the initiative to found the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the global arm of the movement. Based in India and abroad, these organisations, along with their distinctive women’s groups, have aided the BJP (itself initiated by the RSS and the most important political front for the network) over the past several decades as the party has tried to present itself as representing the aspirations of the Indian people.
One aspect of this relationship involves the associations particularly of those based abroad, acting as a public relations arm of the BJP. Another aspect, pertaining to the financial clout of these associations, as well as their direct involvement in buffering the coffers of BJP activists in India, remains somewhat murky. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the much-publicised fundraising drives by various pro-Modi groups (particularly the Overseas Friends of the BJP, which organised over 200 chai pe charcha – conversations over tea – prior to the recent elections) did provide an overseas source of capital to the ruling party. The question of how much this funding amounted to is hard to answer, but it is telling that a recently established organisation like the innocuous sounding Indian American Community Foundation (IACF, described often as an umbrella grouping of three hundred US-based organisations) could host a ‘private’ and supposedly ‘apolitical’ rally in one of the most expensive venues in New York City at a cost of approximately USD 3.5 million, featuring Modi. Given these connections, it is plausible that the moves by the BJP government to create an investment-friendly environment are an effort to repay its overseas constituency for its support in the electoral victory.
Indeed, any attempt to explain the ongoing feting of the Indian diaspora cannot afford to overlook the peculiar position and role of the BJP in creating what its ideologues have called Vishwa Bharati (Global India). That being said, it is perhaps even more important not to over-emphasise this role, for this process of wooing not only predates the current BJP government, but also involves parties from all parts of the political spectrum. In fact, the courting of non-resident Indian (NRI) investors began in the 1980s under Indira Gandhi’s government, and gained momentum under the Congress-led government in the 1990s. Even as they announced the adoption of a major structural adjustment programme in 1991, some members of the P V Narasimha Rao government finessed the theme of the NRI investor as an integral part of the new Indian economy, as someone who could lead the way out of the country’s economic quagmire. The leitmotif of the successful ‘global Indian’ who, if given the chance, an efficient bureaucracy, and the removal of outdated state controls, would prove to be a vital resource for a resurgent India, has since then been reiterated in various versions, by every single political party in power. This of course raises the question of why the diaspora-investor is now the holy grail for the ruling elite – a question that takes on an added piquancy given two factors...

New Delhi [India], Oct 20 (ANI): Responding to the comparison drawn by Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury between the violence in Sabarimala and the uproar witnessed during the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) spokesperson Vinod Bansal said the Sabarimala Temple was southern India's Ayodhya. Speaking to ANI, Bansal thanked the devotees who have been aggressively protesting against the Supreme Court's verdict that quashed restrictions imposed on the entry of women into the Sabarimala temple. "Good that Sitharam Yechury has himself compared Sabarimala with Ayodhya because yes Sabarimala is South's Ayodhya. The way sanctity, religious belief and the serenity of Sabarimala have been attacked shows the reality of the CPI (M). The CPI (M) remains blind and ignorant on Kerala nun suffering, the way non-Hindus are appointed in Travancore Devaswom Board. I appreciate and thank the people who are protesting and saving the sanctity of the temple," the VHP spokesperson said. On October 19, Yechury had termed the violence witnessed in Sabarimala as "the worst form of vote bank politics being played in the country at the expense of destroying social harmony." "All the TV crews who went there which had women were roughed up; the pattern is very similar to the time of the Babri Masjid demolition. You have the heads of the volunteers wearing saffron bands, the same dress you found there then," he added. Alleging that the RSS is involved in the temple violence, the CPM general secretary underscored: "Similar thing is being done here (Sabarimala Temple). The RSS is doing this." Three days after the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala opened its doors for the first time for women of all age groups as per the Supreme Court verdict pronounced on September 28, no woman of menstrual age has yet been able to visit the shrine because of continuous protests. A number of devotees blocked the entry of women trekking up to the hill shrine. The doors of the temple opened on Wednesday at 5 pm and will close on October 22. While reacting on delaying of construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Bansal asserted, "The Ram Temple construction should start as soon as possible. I have full faith that the Supreme Court's verdict on October 29 will be on Ram Temple's favour." The Babri Masjid, built by Mughal emperor Babur in Ayodhya in 1528, was, on December 6, 1992, pulled down allegedly by a group of Hindu activists, claiming that the mosque was constructed after demolishing a Ram Temple that originally stood there. VHP dubs govt's release on fake news 'undeclared emergency'
New Delhi: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Tuesday condemned the Centre’s move to amend the guidelines for accreditation of journalists in case of fake news, saying that the step amounted to an “undeclared emergency”. Stating that media was the fourth pillar of democracy, VHP international working president Pravin Togadia said curtailing their voices in any name was dangerous to citizen rights.
“We strongly condemn this undemocratic move by the government. This is nothing but an undeclared emergency,” he said in a statement.
Without taking names, Togadia said those who opposed “such emergency” for 52 yrs were behaving this way after coming to power.
“This is shocking and horrific,” he said.
The VHP leader said agreeing or disagreeing with a media story was up to an individual, but choking media was unacceptable.
“This is the dangerous tendency by the rulers and we fear that it could even manifest in other areas of common people’s lives or for those who speak for the people,” he said.
Togadia also appealed to all concerned not to bring in such draconian rules and to democratically and peacefully oppose such undemocratic moves.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had on Monday announced measures to contain fake news, saying the accreditation of a journalist could be permanently cancelled if a scribe was found generating or propagating fake news.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Prime Minister’s Office advised the ministry to withdraw the press release on fake news and said the decision on what amounts to fake news should be left to bodies such as the Press Council of India (PCI).

After he goes 'missing', is found, Congress leader, Hardik Patel visit Togadia in hospital
Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) international working president Pravin Togadia who went "missing" in Ahmedabad on Monday -- before being found unconscious in a park -- was visited in hospital Tuesday by Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia and Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel.
Modhwadia said it was a serious issue.
"We all know the track record of Rajasthan police (about encounters). We also know what happens to those who raise voice against the BJP, be it (BJP leaders) Sanjay Joshi, Haren Pandya or (CBI) judge (B H) Loya. To stop recurrence of such incidents, an independent inquiry must be conducted in Togadia's case," he said.
Togadia had gone "missing" after a Rajasthan Police contingent landed in Ahmedabad to arrest him in an old case.
Togadia later said at a press conference attempts were being made to kill him while he was raising the voice of the Hindu community.
He said people had informed that he would be killed in a fake encounter.
Patel, after meeting Togadia, pointed a finger of blame at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah.
"Rights of common people are being snatched. I may not agree with Pravinbhai's ideology, but I am always with him. We all know what kind of conspiracies are being hatched by Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. I don't know about Hindus, but a leader of a Hindu organisation is definitely in danger now," he said.
The Congress party's Rajasthan in-charge Ashok Gehlot, who was chief minister of Rajasthan when Togadia was booked under section 188 of IPC for defying police orders in Gangapur in 2002, also sought an inquiry into Togadia's claims.
He added that the issue is serious since both states, Rajasthan and Gujarat, have BJP governments in power.
After being found Monday evening, Togadia was admitted to hospital in Shahibaug, Ahmedabad.
VHP workers had hit the streets of Ahmedabad and Surat after Togadia had gone "missing".

Religion of the Jahiliya: Jihadism is Kufr, not Islam - Pakistani Jihadists Revealed Plans for Indian Muslims in 1999
Recent terror attack at Mumbai has reminded us once again that Pakistan Army, or one of its agencies Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) at any rate, is determined to change the very character of Islam, turning it into the pre-Islamic religion of the Jahiliya (Arabia in the Dark Ages). It had indeed given us ample evidence of its anti-Islamic character during the Kargil war by reminding us of the Battle of Uhud where a woman of Jahiliya, Hinda, had mutilated the dead body of Prophet Mohammad’s uncle, Hazrat Hamza. The Prophet [peace be upon him] had not only forgiven her but had made it a point to forbid the practice in every Muslim gathering thereafter for fear that the Muslims, too, might do something similar in retaliation. Blood feud and vengeance was rampant in the Arab world of the Jahiliya. One couldn’t help being reminded of that when reports came that one of the terrorists mentioned vendetta for Gujarat and demolition of Babri masjid by Hindutva forces as the justification for the killing of innocents at Mumbai.
Pakistani “Islam” would indeed appear to be completely unrecognisable as Islam to a Muslim in any part of the world. Slowly but surely what appears to be a completely new religion seems to have caught the imagination of many people in Pakistan. Its followers don’t, of course, consider it a new religion. Indeed this religion insists that it is Islam; in fact it calls itself true Islam or real Islam. But it can best be described as Jihadism, as its central belief system is based on a wilful misinterpretation of the Islamic concept of Jihad. It can also be called Talibanism, as the Taliban of Afghanistan, who studied in Pakistani madrasas run by the Jamiat-ul-Ulema-e-Pakistan are its most avid practitioners.
By and large, the western-educated liberal Pakistani intelligentsia, as I found out during several visits, hates this religion and is frightened of it. But as one by one all institutions of governance are succumbing to its growing power and its capacity for evil, they are getting scared to death. Some of them are simply planning to migrate to some non-Muslim majority country. No one is really fighting this malignant force, though some journalists and human rights activists still have the courage at least to express their horror and outrage at grave personal risk. The new democratically-elected government’s commitment or that of President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent plea in a New York Times article rings as hollow as did that of President General Musharraf before that despite their seeming cooperation in the US-led war on terror. The reason is that Pakistan’s moderate secular class has never had the guts to stand up to obscurantist Mullahs right from the beginning of the establishment of the country. Pakistan was carved out of a united India in 1947 by the secular Muslims – almost all religious parties were against the idea of Partition and Two-Nation Theory – but in independent Pakistan the latter were soon able to force the former, the real architects of Pakistan, to pass an Objectives Resolution declaring the country as an Islamic republic to be run by a narrow, sectarian interpretation of Islamic Sharia.
One only needs to read the report of the Justice Munir commission of enquiry into the anti-Ahmadiya riots of early 1950s to learn about the shenanigans of the secular, Westernised class of Muslim Pakistanis and how they surrendered before the then isolated Mullahs and conceded to them centre-stage in policy-making. If they could not do it then, it is very doubtful if they can do that now by arresting a few Jihadist Mullahs and putting them under comfortable house arrest.
It is Islamists, however, the true practitioners of Islam, if any in Pakistan, who should have been fighting this malignant growth. It was their primary duty to keep Islam from being maligned and turned into a religion of the Jahiliya. Some of them indeed are. (One prominent name is that of Maulana Haider Farooq Maudoodi, the son of Jamaat-e-Islami founder Maulana Abul Ala Maudoodi.) But they don’t have the resources to counter the powerful Jihadist rhetoric backed by vast petrodollar resources. Muslim masses are by and large ignorant and poor. It is not difficult to either sway them emotionally using Jihadist rhetoric based on Islamic terminology or even to buy them with promises of goodies on earth and in Heaven. The terrorists and killers of around 200 innocent people in Mumbai are no doubt doomed to be consigned to Hell, as even Indian Islamic scholars have testified in their unanimous judgment, but they had clearly been brainwashed into thinking, as one of them is reported to have revealed that they were destined for Heaven.
What is Jihadism?
The basic belief of Jihadism is that all non-Jihadists are kafir and deserve to be killed. As a result, they have so far killed about a million Muslims in Afghanistan and at least 50,000 Muslims in the Kashmir valley. They have also killed non-Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir. But their present and main long-term target is the Muslims of India. Beginning from the Bombay blasts in 1993, they have made several attempts to provoke massive anti-Muslim violence in the country. The recent Mumbai massacre is the latest in this series.
Indeed a prominent ex-militant Kashmiri leader told me just after Zuhr prayers in the Shah Faisal mosque in Islamabad that the first person to attack the Babri masjid on December 6, 1992, was a Jihadist from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK) who had joined the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) some time ago and was part of Mr. L. K. Advani’s rally along with several of his co-religionists. My informant was also a Jihadist once, but perhaps not completely devoid of the milk of human kindness and thus not a true Jihadist. He retained affections for his wife and kids stranded in the valley and his Hindu and Muslim classmates in Delhi where he had studied up to graduation. He was clearly not happy with the visions of an impending holocaust in India and tried to warn me.
Another warning came to me from a Jihadist during the Kargil war (May-July 1999) on a brief visit to England. I met him outside London’s Finsbury Park mosque after the Friday prayers. Exultant after the Pakistani Jihadists had reportedly downed two Indian planes in Kargil, he was more direct: “You Muslims (Indian) are cowards. Rivers of blood will flow in India soon and you will have just two choices: either become a true Muslim (i.e. Jihadist) or perish.” Revealing future Jihadist plans, he said: “You are completely devoid of leadership. We will provide you leadership under which you will become true Muslims (i.e. Jihadists).”
It is not some anonymous Jihadists alone who have been giving me these warnings, though they were more forthright than the so-called responsible leaders of this group. Prof. Khursheed Ahmad, vice-president of the Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan, for instance, told me in Islamabad in a recorded interview that Indian Muslims have been shirking their duty on Kashmir and they will have to answer before God on the Day of Judgement as to why they did not support the “Jihad” in Kashmir. Hurriyat Chairman and Kashmiri Jamaat-e-Islami chief Syed Ali Shah Geelani has, of course, been taunting Indian Muslims regularly for their supposed cowardice on Kashmir.
I believe Providence would like me to convey these warnings to the nation. Muslims in particular must beware: they should take care not to allow any one to provoke them into any indiscretion, particularly at a time when the country is involved in a bloody fight with the enemy. It must be clearly understood that in the present case, the enemy is not only the enemy of our country but also the enemy of our religion. As realisation seems to be dawning among larger sections of people in Pakistan that Jihadism is their enemy as well, it is possible that we are able to fight it a little better.
Muslims must remember that they have to consult the Holy Quran for guidance in their day-to-day affairs. The model they have to follow is Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) and not terrorists like Ajmal Amir Qasab or destroyers of mosques in Kashmir like Mast Gul. Islam did not allow its followers to pick up a weapon even in their defence for the first thirteen years even though they were facing the worst possible persecution in Mecca. They were “permitted” to defend themselves for the first time in Medina when they were facing aggression from Meccans. Had they not defended themselves even then they would have been surely wiped out from the face of the earth, thus sounding the death-knell for the religion of Islam as well. But only a few years later, when the Prophet had become powerful enough to wage a war with Meccans, he chose peace even on terms that were considered humiliating by most of his followers. He signed a peace agreement known as the Treaty of Hudaibiya. And then when he entered Mecca victorious, a year later, facing no resistance, he chose to grant a general amnesty for all, even for those who had mutilated the dead bodies of his close relatives like his beloved maternal uncle Hazrat Hamza.
Vendetta, vengeance, blood feud, mutilation of dead bodies, etc. are mediaeval pre-Islamic practices of the Jahiliya, practices Islam came to fight against. Those who perpetrate such acts in this day and age cannot claim to be Muslims. They must give some new name to their Faith. In any case Muslims cannot accept them as their co-religionists.
