Why is Byju’s Failing? Reasons behind Byju’s Downfall
Tumblr media
Byju’s is the first Indian company to sponsor the FIFA 2022 World Cup officially. Byju’s valuation is 22 billion dollars, But  Byju’s revenue last year was  2400 crores and their loss was 4600 crores.  Now the question is, How did Byju’s have a loss of 4600 crores? What are the reasons behind Byju’s loss? And Why is Byju’s Failing?
1. Whitehat Jr Flop
Two years ago during COVID, everyone wanted to learn to code, You’ve probably seen a lot of ads by White Hat Junior saying “Learn to code and change the world!”, “Now every kid in India learns to code, build apps, and change the world.” How children aged 6-7 are lending jobs at Google and giving talks at TED.
I have already told you about the Whitehat Jr. Scam in this “Byjus Is A Scam?”
Many experts believe that the trend of coding has ended now that COVID is over. So, it’s better for Byju’s to shut down White Hat Junior, But the founders of Byju’s don’t want to do that they said that White Hat Junior might be an underperformer, but it has had a huge impact on Indian teachers and students.
Tumblr media
Now, You can see this in the White Heart Junior report. Apart from customers, many employees are leaving White Hat Junior. A few months ago, around 800 employees resigned from White Hat Junior.
Another factor for the loss is that the classes White Hat Junior offers are one-on-one sessions and they’re expensive. This is why many middle-class Indian parents can’t afford those classes. Hence, it’s difficult for the company to win many customers in India.
This is why the founders of Byju’s want to expand White Hat Junior to other markets. To launch it in a different country, the company needs more money. This is why White Hat Junior is responsible for 26% of Byju’s losses.
This is why White Hat Junior is the biggest loss-making company in Byju’s.
2. Marketing Expenses
You can see their brand ambassadors as big athletes & celebs like Neeraj Chopra, P.V. Sindhu, and Shah Rukh khan. Byju’s has brand deals with the Indian Cricket team and the FIFA World Cup. As you can see, these are big events involving high-profile players. To sign them all as brand ambassadors, Byju’s had to pay a lot of money. Byju’s spent more than Rs 2,000 crores on marketing last year. Byju’s 32% of spending was for marketing last year.

India's 'toxic' ed-tech giant
Tumblr media
Byju’s is a titan of the Indian ed-tech market, and its flagship program, The Learning App, has 40m users and 2.8m paid subscribers; its valuation is about to climb to $21b; it’s been on a spending spree, buying up competitors in Asia and the USA.
But as Akanksha Singh writes for Rest of World, the company’s sales culture is rotten from top to bottom, with sales staff hustling poor parents to take out predatory loans so that they can hit their sales targets.
https://restofworld.org/2021/inside-india-edtech-byjus/
The article quotes an anonymous former sales person who says he sold a Learning App subscription to a driver with only $9 to his name, whose fees were directly deducted from his paycheck and whose wife pledged to work 24/7 to make up the difference.
And it quotes ed-tech activist Pradeep Poonia — a former ed-tech worker — who describes a host of deceptive tactics rooted in the fact that “Edtech is trying to solve problems that don’t exist.”
He describes a sales pitch that plays on poor parents’ insecurity about their children’s future, that gets them to buy into expensive gadgets and programs that have little relationship to providing a solid educational foundation for their kids.
Singh’s sources include “7 current and former employees at Byju’s,” who describe the company’s pivot from emphasizing private tutors for wealthy families to subscriptions for poor parents who can’t afford them, coupled with predatory loans.
Singh cites an investigation by The Ken, which found that a majority of consumer complaints were from customers who “were unaware they were being signed up for loans when they signed up for subscriptions.”
https://the-ken.com/story/the-loan-crisis-at-byjus/
The app’s ToS allows Byju’s to mine subscribers’ sensitive personal information, which, in turn, feed its sales pipeline, and former sales associates describe how this is used to prey on illiterate parents, with kids being asked trick questions to make them look ill-educated.
One former sales associate summarized the pitch: “Your son can be nothing in life if he doesn’t go with Byju’s — and if you, as a parent, can’t [secure] your kid’s happiness and future … you might as well have not had kids.”
Byju’s sales funnel starts with a “free” 15-day trial, but the internet is full of complaints from customers who found that after the trial, they couldn’t opt out of an ongoing subscription, or get a refund.
There’s a common thread between Byju’s and predatory ed-tech companies in the US, like Proctorio. Proctorio has made a practice of threatening and suing its critics, like Ian Linkletter.
https://pluralistic.net/2020/10/17/proctorio-v-linkletter/#proctorio
Byju’s also sued a critic, launching a $2.7m defamation suit against Poonia in retaliation for a Youtube video in which he mocked its Whitehat Jr subsidiary (Byju’s eventually withdrew the case).
https://www.businesstoday.in/latest/corporate/story/whitehat-jr-drops-rs-20-cr-defamation-suit-against-critic-pradeep-poonia-294974-2021-05-04
Poonia has also documented the hard-sell culture inside Byju’s, posting a video of a sales manager abusing an associate, and in the comments, other Byju’s staff say this is a common occurance.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9Mhky5v-Wk
Parents everywhere worry about their kids’ education and life-chances, something that’s only been inflamed by the lockdown and rising inequality.
There’s a palpable sense of panic, as if the world was a game of musical chairs and your kid’s chances of getting a seat were anything but assured. In that environment, it’s terrifyingly easy to convince parents that they need to take on debt to protect their kids’ future.
The irony, of course, is that indebtedness only increases precarity and robs families of the security that is the foundation of a good education and a resilient mindset.

Byju's Says Only 500 Job Cuts, Employees Counter And Say Massive Layoffs
Amid news of edtech company Byju's having laid off 2,500 employees across its group companies, as reported in the media, the company issued a statement saying, it was "optimising" its teams across group companies.
Tumblr media
The company added that the "entire exercise involves less than 500 employees across Byju's group companies".
"We strongly deny the misinformation presented by Moneycontrol. To recalibrate our business priorities and accelerate our long-term growth, we are optimizing our teams across our group companies. This entire exercise involves less than 500 employees from across Byju's group companies," a company spokesperson said.
Byju's on Thursday said that less than 500 people have been laid off at Whitehat Jr and Toppr, but sacked employees have claimed that 1,100 staff had been retrenched at Toppr alone.
The layoff at Toppr comes alongside Byju's group firm Whitehat Jr retrenching 300 employees in addition to the resignation of 250 employees from the company in April-May.
Toppr's sacked employees said that they got a call from the company on Monday and were asked to resign, failing which they will be terminated without any notice period.

WhiteHat Jr founder departs a year after selling to Byju’s
Karan Bajaj, the founder and chief executive of WhiteHat Jr, is leaving the firm a year after selling the startup for $300 million to Indian edtech giant Byju’s.
In an email to employees on Wednesday, Bajaj and Byju’s founder and chief executive Byju Raveendran said the departure follows a “mutually decided” decision made at the time of acquisition of WhiteHat Jr.
Chatter about Bajaj leaving the firm has been floating around for more than a quarter. TechCrunch inquired Byju’s in early April if Bajaj was going to leave the firm, a detail India’s most valuable startup dismissed as false at the time.
Days later, Byju’s announced it was rebranding its international business as Byju’s Future School and Bajaj as its leader.
In the email today, Raveendran said, “while I wish he would’ve stayed longer, Karan is a force of nature and accustomed to making unconventional choices, as you all know, and I wish him only the best for what will surely be an exciting path ahead.”
Raveendran said Trupti Mukker, who previously oversaw the customer experience at WhiteHat Jr, will now be leading WhiteHat Jr.
WhiteHat Jr, which teaches kids coding, math, and science, is one of the fastest growing edtech startups in India. The startup has also drawn attention because of its unusual step to sue critics.
“All in all, I’m truly very excited for your path ahead and deeply grateful for allowing me to be a part of your lives for this intense, challenging but deeply satisfying period we experience together,” wrote Bajaj to employees today.

We had 20 employees in the first nine months of starting up. Then, in the next nine months, WhiteHat Jr grew to 5000+ employees, while using almost no incremental funds. One of the most crucial decisions a start-up’s founding team makes is when to scale. Do it too early before your unit economics are positive and you’ll rapidly lose your limited early-stage cash reserves.
