Music- rhythm and beauty ❤️⭐
"Night Mail"
by W.H. Auden (Wystan Hugh Auden)
(The rhythm of this poem is reminiscent of a train but it is also very reminiscent of a much earlier poem : " From a Railway Carriage" by R L Stevenson)
see under text of this poem
read by Jeremy Irons 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽⭐
This is the night mail crossing the Border, Bringing the cheque and the postal order, Letters for the rich, letters for the poor, The shop at the corner, the girl next door. Pulling up Beattock, a steady climb: The gradient’s against her, but she’s on time. Past cotton-grass and moorland boulder Shovelling white steam over her shoulder, Snorting noisily as she passes Silent miles of wind-bent grasses. Birds turn their heads as she approaches, Stare from bushes at her blank-faced coaches. Sheep-dogs cannot turn her course; They slumber on with paws across. In the farm she passes no one wakes, But a jug in a bedroom gently shakes. Dawn freshens, Her climb is done. Down towards Glasgow she descends, Towards the steam tugs yelping down a glade of cranes Towards the fields of apparatus, the furnaces Set on the dark plain like gigantic chessmen. All Scotland waits for her: In dark glens, beside pale-green lochs Men long for news. Letters of thanks, letters from banks, Letters of joy from girl and boy, Receipted bills and invitations To inspect new stock or to visit relations, And applications for situations, And timid lovers’ declarations, And gossip, gossip from all the nations, News circumstantial, news financial, Letters with holiday snaps to enlarge in, Letters with faces scrawled on the margin, Letters from uncles, cousins, and aunts, Letters to Scotland from the South of France, Letters of condolence to Highlands and Lowlands Written on paper of every hue, The pink, the violet, the white and the blue, The chatty, the catty, the boring, the adoring, The cold and official and the heart’s outpouring, Clever, stupid, short and long, The typed and the printed and the spelt all wrong. Thousands are still asleep, Dreaming of terrifying monsters Or of friendly tea beside the band in Cranston’s or Crawford’s: Asleep in working Glasgow, asleep in well-set Edinburgh, Asleep in granite Aberdeen, They continue their dreams, But shall wake soon and hope for letters,
And none will hear the postman’s knock
Without a quickening of the heart,
For who can bear to feel himself forgotten?
From a Railway Carriage
by Robert Louis Stevenson
Faster than fairies, faster than witches,
Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches;
And charging along like troops in a battle,
All through the meadows the horses and cattle:
All of the sights of the hill and the plain
Fly as thick as driving rain;
And ever again, in the wink of an eye,
Painted stations whistle by.
Here is a child who clambers and scrambles,
All by himself and gathering brambles;
Here is a tramp who stands and gazes;
And there is the green for stringing the daisies!
Here is a cart run away in the road
Lumping along with man and load;
And here is a mill and there is a river:
Each a glimpse and gone for ever!
From A Child’s Garden of Verses (1885)

Sometimes the best meals are from places you had 0 expectations from 🤔🤔🤔. . Spicy Lamb Bolognese with Severino Rigatoni, Jersey Crushed Tomatoes, Wilted Spinach and Basil Ricotta. The lamb ragù here was absolutely rich and delicious. . The drink was Faber Citrus Vodka, St. Germaine, Pear, Lemon, Honey, Cinnamon. This cocktail was sweet yet absolutely refreshing at the same time. #lamb #bolognese #pearpressure #whitedogcafe #foodporn (at White Dog Cafe Glen Mills) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmJxJLPrXLf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A lot of places are named after historical events, battles, and people, so keep that in mind. God/Goddess names tied to your world also work well. Places are also often named after things that the area is known for, like Georgia being known for its peaches.
My brain was fried by the end of this so feel free to add more!
I hope you find this reference helpful and good luck world-building!

BUY SELCOUTH BY MARC GUNN
My latest CD features Sci F’Irish music. That means it is original songs fusing pop culture themes with Irish drinking songs. There are some traditional music on the album. But mostly, it features songwriting by Marc Gunn with guests including: Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason.
Selcouth means, “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.”
The album is not completely Celtic and it’s not just science fiction and fantasy. It’s a fusion of the two. It’s heartfelt and a lot of fun.
It’s now on sale in my Bandcamp store. Check out Selcouth now.

Kennedy Johnson emailed: "Marc, I haven't dropped a message in awhile, just wanted to say that the St Patrick's Day Podcast was wonderful !!! I love the music/podcast.
I hope you and your family are well.   My Daughter and I went down to the KC SPD parade.
Sounded like the Atlanta SPD parade was a cold one - Kansas City had wonderful weather, Sunny 74 that day.
Estimated over 400,000 attended the parade that day. I made a wonderful corned beef and cabbage dinner that night - so good.
I am hoping to catch a live show one day, probably in Texas as it's closer to KC.
Also hoping you'll be a performer at the Kansas City Irish Fest Labor Day weekend (Sept.) Slainte”

Home Run! Dustin Pedroia’s Mansion Is This Week’s Most Popular Home
realtor.com
Sliding in with the winning run, a Massachusetts mansion owned by erstwhile Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was this week’s most popular home on realtor.com®.
The two-time World Series champ is likely to have played his last game for the Sox, due to his lingering knee injuries. News of the house hitting the market sparked chatter throughout Red Sox nation, and curious fans clicked like crazy to see Pedroia’s place for themselves.
Besides the home of a baseball great, you were also intrigued by the former Michigan home of the infamous American car executive John DeLorean. DeLorean, who created an iconic automobile that was applauded for its design, lived in an oddly understated brick Tudor.
Other homes creating click-storms this week include a luxe Beverly Hills mansion being sold for less than what it cost to build, an adorable Virginia home known as the “Pink House,” and an Ohio Tudor in need some of TLC.
We could all use a little TLC these days. For a welcome diversion, we invite you to scroll on down and check out this week’s most popular homes…
10. 684 Concord Rd, Glen Mills, PA
Price: $399,900
Why it’s here: Fixer-upper on a grand scale! This hulking eight-bedroom home sits on nearly 5 acres and comes loaded with original details. We see loads of potential for this Victorian from 1900 to be turned into something special.
Old World touches include multiple glass-enclosed porches, original wood floors, and a large, formal dining room with built-in cabinets. The property includes several outbuildings, a carriage house, and a spring house near Webb Creek, which runs through the property.

Simpsonville, SC

The brand-new, 13,000-square-foot mansion sits on a full acre and includes approved plans for a two-story guesthouse. Inside, it’s designed to display an art collection, with deft lighting and wide-open walls.
A motorized wall slides open to create a lovely flow between the indoor spaces and the infinity pool. Other luxury highlights include the tiered screening room, indoor and outdoor catering kitchens, and a jaw-dropping set of his-and-hers closets.

White oak floors, Venetian plaster walls, a home gym, theater, an art room, and numerous other high-end upgrades make this a one-of-a-kind prestige property.
Atlanta, GA

6. 2805 Harrison Ave, Cincinnati, OH

Why it’s here: The price per square foot is remarkable! With over 12,000 square feet of living space, this megamansion is going for only $91 a square foot. Situated on 5 acres and built in 1998, the home is filled with high-end features: a wine room, private theater, and a sunroom with views.
There’s also a finished garage and a large studio on the top level, for additional flex space.

3. 40174 Main St, Waterford, VA
Price: $1,499,000
Why it’s here: Known as the “Pink House,” this Colonial home built in 1795 is a local landmark that’s been used as a tavern, apothecary, and bed and breakfast. And while it’s plenty quirky, it’s not so much pink but a shade of salmon.
The property has undergone a modern update. From the hand-colored Venetian plaster to the inlaid mosaics from Montepulciano, Italy, the home is a stunning homage to Old World craftsmanship.
The kitchen is primed for gourmet cooking, and the lush gardens are filled with charming spaces to be enjoyed for centuries to come.

2. 31235 Bingham Rd, Bingham Farms, MI
Price: $1,149,000
Why it’s here: Back to the future—or a return to the past? Originally an old horse stable, this nearly 5,000-square-foot home was once owned by John DeLorean.
The nearly 2-acre property was built in 1954 and includes a guesthouse, brick courtyard with fountain, and a backyard filled with mature trees. Recent updates include a new boiler, windows, and a full house generator.

1. 125 Yarmouth Rd, Brookline, MA
Price: $8,950,000
Why it’s here: Farewell to a Red Sox legend? Built in 2006, this large Colonial is being sold by the Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia. Although he’s under contract with the Sox through 2021, the injury-plagued star appears to be tipping his hand on his future.
Pedroia’s 8,500-square-foot mansion includes a double-height foyer, home gym, media room, and guest quarters.
Outside, there’s a stone patio accessible by French doors from the family room, and a roomy backyard ideal for a game of whiffle ball. And it sits just a mile away from the $33.9 million mansion being sold by Tom Brady.

Basil reviews and raves about a new spooky middle grade book about ghosts, grief, love, and family. See what they have to say…
The Ghost Collector by Allison Mills Annick Press September 2019 Middle Grade
Shelly and her grandmother can see ghosts. They can help them, too. Shelly and her grandmother can catch ghosts in their hair and help them move on to the afterlife. Shelly lives with her mother and grandmother in an old house that they can barely afford to live in. Her grandmother uses ghost catching as the family business, charging rich white people to take care of ghosts in their homes. Shelly mostly deals with the spirits of dead animals—mice, birds, sometimes small dogs. Her mother doesn’t approve and thinks Shelly’s grandmother is irresponsible for taking Shelly out on these ghost hunting trips. Then, Shelly’s mother dies, and Shelly is desperate to find her ghost somewhere. The characters in this story are Ililiw (Cree) and settler Canadian, and the story is based in part on real stories about the author’s grandmother that she heard growing up. It adds an interesting dimension to an already intriguing paranormal middle-grade story.
Basil’s rave: I have to admit, I’m biased to like books with ghosts in them. I grew up reading spooky stories like R. L. Stine’s Goosebumps series and was already excited to read this story when I picked it up. But debut author Allison Mills understands something about ghosts that only the best storytellers do:  the ghosts should be symbols of something greater. Instead of only adding a spooky atmosphere, these ghosts tell a greater story about grief and loss and rememberance. The writing was so beautiful and this story made me fall in love with middle grade all over again. The interaction between Shelly’s grandmother and her Ililiw (Cree) worldview with the police and others in her community added an extra layer to this story about grief and spooky ghosts, meaning the ghosts took on further roles as players in larger cultural tensions. Shelly makes friends with ghosts and they listen to cassettes by The Cure, so really, I couldn’t wish for much more. Do yourself a favour and jump right into this one! There’s so much to talk about I can’t possibly cover it all, and the story is fewer than 200 pages. Just read it! It’s so good!
Where to find in-store: Age 12
Perfect for fans of: The Elevator Ghost by Glen Huser, Haunted Canada series by Joel A. Sutherland, In the Dark by E. Nesbit.
