Tumblr media
I'VE HAD THE EXACT SAME THOUGHT.
I almost included it in this post, but then refrained because "no- no, that's TOO unhinged", however it would literally be so good.
MK going "I can't risk hurting the people I care about—the ones I have left" in 4x08 and then being the one to end his friend's previous lives. Like, he was evil/choatic in a past life and hurt his friends. He was kind and tried to help in this life, and still hurt his friends. That's "all roads lead to pain" at it's FINEST.
Wukong, all alone on flower fruit mountain and ready to end whatever hatches out of that egg, then having a baby pop out? "Have you become so desperate to end me that you would sacrifice this blameless innocent child!?" "You're giving me no choice." BUT MK DID GIVE HIM A CHOICE BY BEING MK.
And so like, you have this baby with unbelievable power who in a past life killed your friends. How do you make sure it doesn't do that again? How do you set it on the path of good?
You give it the friends that changed you during your journey. Because then maybe they can change it.
Eldritch Abomination MK Theory
OKAY. @the-punning-ubus
Tumblr media
I just want to say reading these tags are SO validating, because I have my little "MK was an eldritch abomination thing pre-hatching from stone" theory and seeing someone else come to pretty much the same conclusion feels good.
I've been meaning to write a proper theory post on this for a while, so now is as good of a time as any!
Obviously we have Wukong's "Not just anyone can wield my staff, but you did" from A Hero is Born and "The staff's just a big 'ol stick bud! It takes someone special to wield it" from 3x03, but there's also something in 1x09 Macaque:
Tumblr media
Macaque: "Your staff kinda gives you away dude, not just anyone can wield that thing."
-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Macaque: "Ohohoh no, can't you hold the magic staff anymore? Well, you know what that means—there really isn't anything special about you. You're just a kid with a heavy stick."
-
Tumblr media
-
The sweet irony of "There really isn't anything special about you. You're just a kid with a heavy stick!" followed immediately by MK lifting the staff again is not lost on me.
So, from s1 it was pretty obvious that Wukong didn't "give" MK any form of power, but we knew that already with MK being a monkey demon and all. I just think it's particularly intriguing that all of this was laid out in the same episode where MK proclaims "I am the weapon!". In all honestly, he probably was/is.
One of the main questions coming out of s4 is "why was MK created?"—Monkey King's stone was used to form another, but for what purpose? To what end? What reason was MK at the center of all these stories?
Well, here's my current theory:
MK was something in a past life, and that something needed to be contained—and so, to put a stop to past life eldritch abomination MK, he was then sealed away in the stone.
I think this scene in particular raises some alarm bells:
Tumblr media
The stone cracks open, bursts with light, and then it closes—like something was put inside it. The scene could of course just be an aesthetic choice, or chosen to be this way for another reason we don't know yet, but it just feels so deliberate. A ball of light appearing from the stone, then another ball of light in the mystery woman's hands being revealed to hold a monkey, and then the stone reforming around the ball of light. I just can't help but feel there's something there.
Next I want to discuss the two key things that make me feel this theory has merit:
1.) MK has made a habit of breaking out of things he shouldn't be able to (the calabash in 1x05, the trigram furnace in 2x00, the scroll in 4x07, Destiny itself in 3x14) and the stone would be no exception.
2.) Every antagonist in this show has been sealed away in some form, then being released to resume their plans from before being sealed. Here's a list:
DBK was sealed under the mountain, and after being released continued his plan of world domination.
Spider Queen was metaphorically trapped in her fallen empire, and after being given the chance to rule the above world once again, immediately takes it.
The Lady Bone Demon was imprisoned in her tomb, and after being released prematurely (before learning the error of her ways), she continued her plan to destroy the world and create a new one.
Azure Lion was imprisoned in the scroll, and upon being released (by an unknown 3rd party), immediately worked to free his friends and then end the Jade Emperor's reign.
Now, I love foils, so MK breaking out of the stone he was sealed in, yet coming out an actually changed being unlike everyone else in this show, would be DELICIOUS:
Tumblr media
Lady Bone Demon: ”No backup and no weapon? So, you’re plan is to fist fight a child?” Sun Wukong: “We both know that’s not what you are.”
(3x11 This Imperfect World)
-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lady Bone Demon: "STOP! Have you forgotten? Destroy me and you destroy the host! Have you become so desperate to end me that you would sacrifice this blameless innocent child?" Sun Wukong: "You're giving me no choice! All the time you spent locked away, and you haven't changed a bit! I'm going to finish you, like I should have done a long time ago! I told you—you should have stayed buried."
(3x11 This Imperfect World)
-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Subodhi: "I have not brought you to your master. Although this is the stone from which Sun Wukong once sprung, it appears overtime, it was used to form another. A simple creature, with no past, no family, and no name. There is a reason you were at the center of these stories—a reason you can harness the power of the Monkey King himself!"
(4x06 Show Me the Monster)
-
(If you want extra fodder for this, please see this parallels post :3)
So, if MK were to hatch out of the stone—where *he* was sealed away—and he actually came out of it a "blameless innocent child" with "no past, no family, and no name", it would work exceedingly well. Wukong's not above giving people second chances, but if you use that second chance to try and destroy the world, you force his hand.
(Side note: it could also be the case that the stone was used to "reset" whatever MK was in his past life, and Wukong was originally meant to destroy whatever came out of the stone—which could be the reason he stayed at Flower Fruit Mountain for hundreds of years. However, when an child came out, a new being without a past or the memories of what it was before—Wukong choose to let it go. He choose to let it live a normal life—or even ensuring it could live a normal life—and it then found it's way to Pigsy. This definitely gets into real crack theory territory, but I did want to bring it up.)
Now, none of this is even mentioning the suspiciously MK shaped figure in the mural from 3x13:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, the figure in this mural is only shown when MK is also on screen, which is framing that drives me insane. Perhaps this is when they first caught MK's past life, then finally able to subdue him and seal him in the stone.
And so, if MK really was this terrible chaos driven abomination in his past life, what does that mean ✨thematically✨?
Well,
Tumblr media
Sun Wukong: “Point is, mistakes happen, but so long as you leave the world in better shape than you found it, then it’s all good. Right?”
(4x01 Familiar Tales)
-
Tumblr media
SWK: “ENOUGH! I’ve never let anyone dictate my destiny in the past, and I’m not about to start now. None of us are! We can’t change who we were yesterday or in a past life, or a hundred life times ago! We live with the choices we’ve made, for what matter is the choices we make RIGHT NOW! Only we decide who we are and what we do with the power we have.”
(4x07 Pitiful Creatures)
-
MK can't change who he was in a past life. He can't change that the roads all lead to pain. But you know what he can do? He can try. He can try and get a little bit better every day. He can try and help people. He can try and make the world better than he found it.
Maybe in a past life, MK caused just as must chaos and destruction as Wukong did in his past. Maybe he caused even more problems than he has as the Monkie Kid. But that also doesn't undo the good he's doing now.
Anyways, that's my "MK was an eldritch abomination thing pre-hatching from stone" theory. Hope you enjoyed

Just to let everyone know my mortal kombat characterizations are a mix of the arcade games, mk1995, mk defenders of the realm, and my imagination. Rarely will i maybe pick and choose the rare good things they did in the newer stuff. Just so we're clear:
Raiden and fujin are GODS not demigod as that means one of their parents would had to have been mortal. They are GODS
Liu kang is humble but not infallible, he hates the idea of being a god and tricked himself into thinking he wants to be a chosen one when deep down he just wanted a normal fucking life. He can and will crack under pressure and just bc it takes a lot doesn't mean he'll last forever as a "hero". There are no heroes in Mortal kombat.
Kung lao is prideful in his HONOR of his ANCESTOR and the SECRET WHITE LOTUS SOCIETY. He is not anymore arrogant in his capabilities as a warrior as literally anyone else. He works hard, fights hard, for his friends and earthrealm.
Johnny cage has no fuckin deep lore ancestry to explain his powers he just has chi energy like everyone else he's just rare bc he managed to bring it out so quickly naturally no special bloodline or whatever the fuck percentage this white man has, its all him all his own soul all his own talent.
Sindel LOVES kitana and will never not love her. No matter how much dark magic corrupts her soul and mind, her heart is strong and true and Although it might be twisted she will love her daughter and sacrifice everything for her. Including herself.
Shang tsung is a baddie and he doesn't need big muscles or fancy artifacts to do so. His danger is in his smarts, even if he's not top dog he'll never be out of the game for long nor at the bottom. He will always be persistent and always there in mortal kombat, after all. He is THE tournament master of mortal kombat.
Shao kahn aint no whimp and he isn't a meat head either. He's a cunning tyrant, bold but not so brash he can't be smart enough to know what fights to pick to give him an advantage. Conquered realms with the oldest trick in the book, divide and conquer. Makes his enemies fight his other enemies, plays both sides to gain allies to his power. He's deadly because he is smart AND strong.
Kuai Liang LOVES his brother and never ever in all the lifespan of the universe and several others will he abandon or denounce bi-han. If he has to pluck bi-han's soul out of the layers of void and dark magiks that quan chi put in place then so be it. Kuai knows his brother is in there and if not, he'll find a way to give him peace one way or another.
JAX HAS HAPPINESS AND RESPECTS JACQUI EVEN IF HE SEES HER AS DADDY'S BABY GIRL BC JACQUI IS A GROWN ASS WOMAN
Speaking of jacqui, she is awesome and doing fine as takada's wife and is researching some cool magiks on the side to better help earthrealm (always leaving shang tsung on read since he wants an apprentice)
Sonya is doing her own thing. Ideally she would never had married a man she has 0 chemistry with, but if it has to happen she is divorced and fine with it and never gets back with Johnny. They're still friends tho! Best friends that just don't work as lovers.
Cassie is doing her own thing like Johnny does and has a personality that isnt "nerd dude bro wank bait" and is a warrior who goes through her own journey.
And scorpion is practically retired he's doing fine he's ok he's rebuilt the shirai ryu and everything is prosperous with the ninjas.
Reptile is actually not the last of his species and is getting some damn respect for once. Kotal Kahn is trying to better himself not only as a warrior but a leader bc he realized he has a long way to go actually. Goro is back and vibing. Sheeva is vibing too. Baraka is vibing.
MILEENA AND KITANA WILL HAVE RESPECT EVEN IF THEY'RE STILL RIVALS
Kitana is not some stuck up dipshit haughty princess she actually remembers what being under shao Kahn's oppressive regime, but also starts to realize despite that she had more privilege than others and starts to actually help all of her people and learn that edenia was never a utopia and such a thing doesn't exist, but regardless she will try to actually unite ALL of her people regardless of social status (might even abolish it)

NV companions reactions to taking the courier’s place in OWB
"Here and now got its ups and downs, but... focusing on the past, like it was any better? That's just Old World Blues." -Blind Diode Jefferson
Arcade Gannon: Being whisked off to a pre-war scientific research haven and adopted by a group of five floating brains in jars was actually a dream Arcade had once, but he was pretty sure it didn't involve losing his own brain along the way. Conversation with the Think Tank would leave him amused at first, but increasingly more horrified as he learned the secrets of Big MT and realized just how much chaos they could create if they weren't busy playing in their Mojave sandbox. The most intriguing part of Big MT for Arcade would, of course, be the Sink. The Biological research station, the light switches, the Sink Central Intelligence Unit and all the others would fascinate him, and he would do his best to figure out their components and try to replicate them in New Vegas for the Followers of the Apocalypse to use. This leads to more than a few circular conversations with Doctor Klein and, once he meets him, Doctor Mobius. I think Mobius' side of the story would leave Arcade depressed about the state of Big MT and the various things roaming its landscape that used to be people. His argument with his own brain, on the other hand, would be worthy of any pre-war sitcom. Though sorely tempted to destroy the Think Tank for good and prevent their wild experimentation ever escaping the crater, I think Arcade would weight the potential good their technology could do much more heavily and convince Doctor Klein to partner with him as a new head researcher.
Craig Boone: Given Boone's hatred for the Legion and their enslavement practices, the Think Tank would seal their doom as soon as they stripped him of his brain and his ability to fight back. And once he found Little Yangtze and its total pacification collars? Oh, it's on. I don't think Boone would be sly about his anger either, but given the Think Tank's flippant attitude toward their lobotomites, they probably wouldn't pick up on just how furious he was until it was too late. There are two things Boone would form attachments to while sneaking around Big MT: Roxie, the ever-loyal cyberdog with a heart of gold, and the Stealth Suit Mk II, which compliments Boone's combat style with minimal commentary. While I don't think Boone would have any strong feelings either way toward Doctor Mobius, I don't think he would kill him unless he had to. Mobius would probably be tickled by his stoic countenance, and would attempt to shower him in Mentats as a way of loosening up. Boone's brain would be a bit like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, reveling in its own sadness for once because Boone always shoved those feelings out of sight and out of mind. Their main argument would be over a compromise to confront that deep sorrow once reunited. When the Think Tank is dead, Boone zaps Roxie and himself back to Nipton, then smashes the Big Mountain Transportalponder! on the nearest rock.
Lily Bowen: I think we could class Lily's reaction to being kidnapped and experimented upon by the Think Tank as utter confusion. She would still be as benevolent as ever, trying her best to soothe the over-inflated egos of the various doctors as they debated what to do with this creature that had thoroughly stumped the Auto-Doc upon recovery, but I think she would start looking for the exit as soon as they suggested a full dissection. Lily's experience in Big MT would be very different from the other companions after that, with the Think Tank sending wave after wave of lobotomites and night stalkers after her in an attempt to regain their new test subject, and Lily beating each attack back with her trusty vertibird blade and the growing pile of new gadgets she accumulated with every location visited. I think Doctor Mobius would watch this play out with interest, and would send a few packs of robo-scorpions to herd her toward the radar fence, then surreptitiously lower the barrier long enough for her to stumble outside. The story of her time in "the Big Empty" would become a fireside hit in Jacobstown, but few would believe that she had actually found the place where all cazadores and night stalkers come from.
Raul Alfonso Tejada: Raul is already missing a few body parts, so what's one more? The old ghoul would be somewhat exasperated at finding himself in another situation of imprisonment and being forced to do work for others, but at least it's not as boring as Black Mountain. Big MT, on the other hand, is a heck of a lot more deadly than the State of Utobitha, but all Raul can do is roll his eyes every time he spots another band of lobotomites chasing him down or robo-scorpions crawling over the horizon. Like Boone, Raul grows fond of Roxie, though his favorite acquisition from Big MT's tech piles would definitely be the proton axe: He just likes the way it looks and feels when he's swinging it around. Confronting Doctor Mobius would come when the old ghoul is reaching the end of his patience with the Think Tank, though he would spare the mad scientist some time to listen to his sad story and ponder the fate of Big MT. I think Raul would be the one most in tune with his disembodied brain, and they would greet each other as old friends that share a rocky history, but have accepted each other's flaws. As for the Think Tank, Raul would leave the decision of what to do with them up to Doctor Mobius: After all, they're not his mess to clean up.
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: Oh boy. Cass is no one's errand girl, but she's also rather fond of her brain, pickled in liquor though it may be. She would blaze a deadly trail through Big MT, marked by the wrecked bodies of robo-scorpions and Y-17 trauma override harnesses (a personal scourge for the former caravan owner, maybe her teams wouldn't have been killed if she'd just had some goddamned walking suits to do the job) and the never-ending stream of curse words floating on the crater's breeze. The lobotomites would quickly learn to stay out of her way, and every new acquisition for the Think Tank would be tossed unceremoniously on the floor of the sanctum with a clatter. Doctor Dala loves the caravaner, but the others all hate her, and Cass can't help but find the feeling mutual. Doctor Mobius would not be able to sway her from high-tailing it out of Big MT as soon as possible, and like Raul, she would not see the Think Tank's containment as her responsibility. Her brain, on the other hand, would berate her for her internalized guilt and bully her into doing the right thing - which, in her case, is eliminating the Think Tank's threat once and for all.
Veronica Santangelo: The main challenge for the doctors of the Think Tank upon capturing Veronica would be prying her away from their sanctum long enough to set her on the path to retrieving tech for them. Like Arcade, Veronica would be fascinated by the Sink and everything in it, but she would be equally fascinated with the scientists themselves and their varied personalities. She would prod Doctor Klein for details about his work, decode Doctor 8's speech patterns, and roll her tongue around in her mouth for Doctor Dala's recording equipment. Getting her brain back would take a backseat to just wandering Big MT, taking in the crazy inventions from a world long gone and wondering which ones she could bring home to Elder McNamara to show him how remaining set in his ways has put the Brotherhood of Steel on a path to irrelevance. This desire would stay her hand after meeting Doctor Mobius, and would lead her to convince the Think Tank to abandon their escape attempts and return to testing silly hypotheses. Her most important discovery would be the clues left behind by Father Elijah, well on his way to becoming a mad scientist himself, and Christine, hot on his trail for the Brotherhood of Steel. All in all, the experience would leave Veronica hungry for more adventure and send her sprinting toward the Sierra Madre and an uncertain fate.
ED-E: As a robot, the Think Tank would be disappointed with the little intruder and would likely argue about whether to toss it in the scrap pile. Doctor 0 would be absolutely disgusted by the intrusion of Robert House's technology into Big MT, but Doctor Dala would become attached to the eyebot and adopt it, cooing about the elegance of its design while simultaneously bemoaning its lack of biorhythms. ED-E, confused, would humor her for a while before striking out to explore the crater and its many wonders. After its first run-in with lobotomites, the eyebot would flee in fear, straight past the X-42 giant robo-scorpion and into the clutches of Doctor Mobius. The self-proclaimed villain would take pity on the robot and release it outside the radar fence with an escort of robo-scorpions to take home.
Rex: Cyberdogs are a well-known quantity at Big MT, so the new arrival from outside the radar fence is immediately handed over to Doctor Borous for his X-8 project. With a fresh new brain, some grease on his joints, and a competent pack addition named Roxie, Rex is ready to take on any obstacle courses in the X-8 research center. Once the two cyberdogs grow bored of tearing through night stalkers and avoiding Gabe, they make their escape and lope off into the Mojave to have a litter of Boston terrifiers together.

Trust is for fools, and I’ve always been called stupid
The Calabash was...something.  Terrible, confusing, but for a moment...nice.
It was easy to trust it, the kindness.  MK resolves never to do that again.  And then he trusts Macaque, because he’s stupid, and in the aftermath of DBK and the failure that was the skeleton key, MK doesn’t think he can trust anything at all.
Least of all, himself.
(or, “I just wanted to be good enough.  Like you.” and the consequences thereof)
MK knows, for a fact, that he’s not smart.  He’s not a tactician.  He doesn’t have the brains to strategize, not really.  If anything, that’s Tang’s department, because Tang has so much knowledge in that brain.  Even Pigsy could figure out a better plan than he could.
Which is fine.  MK is find with leaning on others, so long as he pulls his weight twice as much so it’s equal.  He’s the hero, he’s got to show them that even if he’s not smart, he’s at least dependable in any situation.  The clones were a mess, and he realizes that he just has to get used to sleeping less.
And he does, too.  Soon, he can go through live with six hours of sleep, 2 am to 8am every night after partying, and still kick it through the day.  No one makes comments on the bags under his eyes, because he gets a little makeup to fix that, and he doesn’t let his smile falter.
So really, why would anyone ask?  No need to worry, right?
Sometimes Pigsy looks at him a certain way, like he’s trying to decipher something.  One those days, MK pumps up the energy to 11, to prove that he’s okay.
Somehow, that makes Pigsy’s frown deepen, instead of lightening it.
Then he messes up Mei’s thing at her house, and again at the race.  Then the Calabash happens.  Then he loses the skeleton key.  Then he trusts Macaque, yells at Monkey King.  Then he fights DBK again.
And at the end of it all, there’s still a lingering doubt that he’s done anything good.  That he’s done enough.
So he helps out with the city reconstruction, on the weekends.  Hangs out with Mei, trains with Monkey King, works at the noodle shop. paints with Sandy, talks with Tang.  He balances it all out, and if he has 0 time for himself, that’s fine.  Who needs alone time?
But then, one day, he’s training with Monkey King.  He’s teaching him a few katas, because while MK is fantastic at twirling the staff around and blocking things from time to time, he still fumbles.  Some katas will give him the muscle memory to be a bit crazy.
Some of them are stupid hard, though.  There’s a lot of little steps involved, and MK is still getting into this whole focus business.
(It’s a stain on his pride, that that’s a lesson he still hasn’t exactly mastered.  Monkey King always says that it’s fine, as long as he’s trying, but that’s worthless platitude and MK knows it.)
He’s been working through this one kata for like, an hour, and he can tell Monkey King is getting a little frustrated with him.  He doesn’t say it, but MK knows.  He can get annoying.
But then, he tries again, for what feels like the 1000th time, and when he’s done Monkey King cheers.
“YES!  Oh, that-that was perfect, kid!” Monkey King is smiling, and MK wants to be happy about it, but.
Perfect.
He said perfect.
And MK, he knows he isn’t in the Calabash, he broke it, but he doesn’t want to hear that word, because it reminds him of too much of what he wanted then, consistent praise, kindness from everyone, the knowledge that he wasn’t completely useless, because he did it.  He saved everyone.
He wants that but he’ll never get it.  Not yet anyway.
“Kid?” MK flinches at the sound, blinking away his thoughts.  Monkey King has gone from smiling to pensive, if not concerned, arms crossed over his chest.
“I really did good?” MK puts on his trademark smile, and Monkey King softens.
“Heck yeah.  I think that’s good enough for today, you got an easy ten katas under your belt.  Practice them at home in the meanwhile, kay?” And MK wants to argue, because he needs to know more, faster, but he nods, waving a cheery goodbye and running off.
There’s a thrumming energy in him, that he needs to do something, anything, to let this out.
So he punches a wall, and the skin of his knuckles bleed.
He stares at it for a few moments, and realizes that the buzzing energy is gone.  He can breathe.
He doesn’t bandage it until he gets home.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
It becomes part of a routine.  When he feels this...extra energy, all it takes is a little pain.  And punching things will make him stronger, anyway, so it’s basically training.  He really needs to catch up on that.
Mei invites him to a race, as a mark of goodwill considering the last time.  He declines, and practices Katas for three hours until it’s party time after Mei’s obvious win.
His limbs feel like lead but he still parties till it’s past midnight.  Sleeps for six hours.  Goes to work.
Punches a wall.
Rinse and repeat.
Tang and Pigsy notice the bandages on his hands, wrapped around his fingers and knuckles.  The first few days they say little, but Tang mentions it as MK busses tables.
“Just a new look,” he shrugs it off.
“A new look to look like you’re a street gang kid?” Pigsy barks from the kitchen, and MK shrugs.
He buys red gloves a day or so later, so they don’t see the bandages anymore.  When they ask, he says he wanted the look to be more authentic.
They stop asking questions.  Mission accomplished.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
He messes up eventually.  He keeps screwing up at meditation, either twitching too much or practically falling asleep.  He’s practically thrown out of the training grounds by a reasonably annoyed and disappointed Monkey King.
And, to top it off, he scheduled his training day on the wrong day off, so now he apparently missed a shift at work.  Pigsy shouts at him, threatens to fire him, and MK doesn’t even have the energy to try panickily apologize.
So he just takes it.
“Sorry, Pigsy,” He manages, and heads up to his room, missing the look of surprise and concern that flashes on Pigsy’s face.
What a mess.  Stupid, he’s so stupid!
He slams his fist into his head, and then blinks in surprise, because the pain felt good.  It scrambled his thoughts, brought him back into focus.
He at least, this time, doesn’t have to make an excuse about covering his temples.  He’s already got his headband.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Things go back to normal, with MK’s shitty sleep schedule and shittier habits, and he’s so, so proud when no one notices, but also almost betrayed?  Do they not care enough to notice?  Are they just not looking anymore?
When he goes through the town he keeps his eyes peeled.  He has enemies, like spiders and Macaque and DBK and Red Son and Princess Iron Fan, Yin and Jin and a million others.  You can’t trust anyone, and you’re not safe.  He knows this, makes sure he remembers it, because when you forget that that’s when you get hurt, or someone you care for gets hurt.
It all comes to a head when he’s coming to the noodle shop after a long day of training, figuring a nice bowl of noodles and soup will be the perfect energy boost to get him through the rest of the day, but when he gets back the lights are off.
Now that he thinks about it, Monkey King let him out a little early, didn’t he?
He’s on edge as he walks through the door, and then the lights flick on.
“SURPRISE!”
And MK, he doesn’t see his four friends and mentor, he sees an attack.  This is out of the ordinary, this isn’t normal, Pigsy doesn’t close shop early, Monkey King doesn’t let him out of training early.
He screams, and the staff is in his hand, and the end of it shoots outward, stretching towards one of the figures.
Pigsy ducks, and the staff embeds itself in the wall.
MK blinks.  Stares.  Doesn’t breathe because he’s shaking.
“MK?” Mei starts, but then.
“WHAT THE HELL KID?!” Pigsy shouts, and MK drops the staff and runs.
When he leaves, Monkey King picks up his staff, making it vanish. He sits, cross-legged on his cloud, and crosses his arms over his chest.
“We’re going after him, right?”
“Obviously!” Pigsy growls out, and they go.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Realistically, MK knows he shouldn’t be terrified of his friends.
But they’re all stronger and better than him, and Monkey King was there too, and he messed up and perfectly good thing because he wasn’t good enough, because he freaked out over nothing, and now everyone is mad at him.
He stops in an alley, pounding his fists against his head.
“Stupid,” He mutters.  “Stupid, stupid!”  Harder, and harder, he needs to get this feeling out.  Doesn’t matter if it hurts.  Harder, and harder, biting his lip so hard it bleeds, curled up in an alley.
He hears a voice, muffled, from far away.
“Found him!  MK, it’s-what are you doing?!” Mei almost screams, and that gets Pigsy, Sandy, Tang, and Monkey King there faster than she expected.  MK doesn’t hear her, he keeps muttering to himself, keeps slamming his fists into his head.
Monkey King grabs his wrists, right before another swing, and MK freezes, blinking tiredly.  His head hurts.  His gloves have spikes on them, for the aesthetic, and he feels something wet trailing down the side of his face.
“Kid?” Monkey King tries, and MK knows he needs to reply, but the world’s getting fuzzy.
“Kid!”
He passes out.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
He wakes up on a cloud, and for a moment is pretty sure he’s dead.
“Not quite,” Someone calls, and oh, he must have said that aloud.
He sits up, and he’s in the noodle shop, on Monkey King’s cloud.
Said Monkey King is standing next to him, a frown on his face, and MK wants to vanish.
“M-Monkey King, I-,” he raises a hand, and realizes his gloves are missing.  as is his headband.  They’ve been replaced with bandages.
“You nearly gave yourself a concussion, you idiot,” Pigsy comes from the back, holding a bowl of noodles.  He practically shoves it into MK’s arms, and MK fumbles with it, before he steadies.  He takes the chopsticks, and stares down at the bowl.
“Don’t spill any.  This cloud doesn’t dry clean,” Monkey King jokes, and MK nods, shakily, and eats.  He doesn’t say anything, and everyone just watches.  It’s unnerving.
The bowl is taken out of his hands, and Tang takes it to the sink, before MK can even think to move to get up.
“...am I in trouble?” He asks, shoulders hiking up to his ears, and Pigsy sighs.  Monkey King shrugs.
“Kind of,” Is the reply he gets from his mentor, and MK deflates.
“MK, why the hell were you hitting yourself hard enough to make you bleed,” It’s not phrased as a question, and MK flinches.
“It’s just-it helps me,” Pigsy raises a brow at that, and MK lets the words fall out of his mouth, rapid fire.  “I just-I got to be good, right?  I have to to good work, and be better, and get better, and sometimes I get stressed out but then I just-I hit something and I can focus,” He glances over to Monkey King.  “Focus is important right?  I’m just doing that, you know?”
Monkey King looks a bit a lost, and a lot concerned.
“Kid-,” MK interrupts his mentor and doesn’t have the focus to even be nervous about it.
“I shouldn’t have started hitting my head, that was stupid-,” for a moment, one of his hands reaches up in a muscle memory of motion, but Monkey King grabs him by the wrist and pulls his arm back down.  “I can just go back to hitting other stuff, yknow?  To keep me on track.  And I’ll do better, promise,” He glances between his friends, but instead of making them feel better, they only look more concerned.
“Better at what?  You do plenty?” Mei tilts her head to the side, confused.
“Maybe...,” MK shrugs it off.
“What is even your schedule like?” Tang asks.  “If you’re this concerned about messing it up?”
“I work here from nine to six, then I eat, practice katas, and then hang out with Mei or paint with Sandy or hang out with Tang.  Party until one, sleep at two, wake up at eight.  I train with Monkey King on days I’m off, and I look to see who needs help on the weekends,” He prattles it off proudly, but Monkey King’s eyes narrow.
“And when do you relax?” He asks, and MK tilts his head to the side at the question.
“When I’m asleep?”
“MK, I thought you’d learned to not overwork yourself after the clones thing,” Tang pipes up, and MK blinks.
“But I’m not using clones.  I got better instead,” Pigsy groans.
“Kid, you’re a candle burning at both ends.  No wonder you’re about to fall apart.” Pigsy rubs at his temples in frustration, and MK stares.
“But-but I have to!  I got to-I got to do something!  And I’m good at this, I can do this!  I have to!”
“Why?”
Mei’s question stops him short, and MK doesn’t know how to explain.
“You can trust us, you know.  We can pick up the slack,” Tang calls, from his place at the noodle bar.  MK snorts.
“You can’t trust anyone, and you’re not safe,” he mumbles.  Monkey King’s ear twitches.
“The hell did you learn that from?” His mentor turns to him, and MK shrugs.
“Jin and Yin.  The Calabash.  The Skeleton key.  Macaque,” He clenches his fists.  That buzzing feeling is back, and it’s hard to breathe.  He doesn’t know how to focus, he doesn’t
“Fuck, kid, you were in the Calabash?  That’s a nightmare, no wonder you’re messed up.  Why didn’t you say something?” Monkey places a hand on top of one of MK’s fists.
“Wasn’t important.  I’m okay.”
“You’re not,” Pigsy barks.
“I’m okay enough.”
“You shouldn’t have to be!”
“But I’m the hero!” MK shouts, jumping off of the cloud and looming over Pigsy, in a rare moment where his height advantage means something.  “I have to keep the world safe, I have to stop the bad guys, I have to be better!”
“You have time,” Monkey King tries, and MK whirls on him.
“No, I don’t, because you waited until the last second to have anything to do with me!”
The shout isn’t mean to come out like that, but Monkey King flinches like he’s been hit, and MK curls in on himself.  He’s not bitter, he’s not, it’s just...frustrating.  That he has to train and fight bad guys who have thousands of years on him.  He can’t ever catch up, but he’s trying.  Isn’t that enough?
“Kid-,” Monkey King reaches out, and MK turns away.
“No-I’m sorry-that isn’t fair,” he lifts his hands up. “Stupid-”
Pigsy grabs one arm and Monkey King the other, and MK is frozen, fists raised towards his head.
MK sniffles.  And then he sobs.
He drops to his knees on the floor, crying because it’s so much and he was handling it even when it hurt and now everyone knows how pathetic and weak he is.
“It’s so hard!” He cries.  “I was just trying to be better!”
Pigsy pulls him close, and hugs.
“Kid, you’re doing fine.  Better than fine.  You got to deal with a lot of shit, and it’s hard, but you’re doing a good job.  But you don’t have to do this all.  You can take breaks,” MK doesn’t think he remember Pigsy ever speaking this soft.
“I thought there were no breaks in the war against the enemy,” He mumbles, and Pigsy snorts.
“I can make an exception, but only this time,” MK chuckles.  Pigsy lets go, and MK wipes his eyes, standing.
He turns to Monkey King.
“Listen, kid,” Monkey King looks worlds of uncomfortable.  “MK,” he amends.  “I didn’t know how bad this would get.  Couldn’t teach you with the staff until you got it.  And, uh, I figured experience learning would work, since that was how it was with me.  Mostly,” He shrugs, and MK just stares.  “But I’m sorry you had to deal with all that.  You’re my student.  I should protect you more, when you’re still learning.”
“It’s okay,” MK says, automatic.  Monkey King’s eyes soften with something undiscernible.
“Sure, kid,” He mutters, and MK wonders who is blaming who at this point.
“Okay,” Mei pipes up.  “Are we gonna celebrate MK’s birthday or what?”
MK blinks.
“It’s my birthday?”
“You forgot?!”
“I was busy!’
They’re laughing, and Pigsy heads into the kitchen.  Something about a cake.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
MK is barred from working the next day, as well as training and partying.  He’s only to do something that is for him, not for anyone else.
So he draws, all day, little sketches.  Drawings of him, of Pigsy, of Sandy, of Mei, of Tang, of Monkey King.
A new routine.
He works from 9 to 6, 3 days a week.  Trains two days a week.  Has weekends off, to do whatever he wants.  Mei calls him to party, and always asks what he did the day before extending her invitation.  Same with Sandy and Tang.
He wonders if they’re conspiring against him.  For him?  Whatever.
Pigsy checks his hands and temples every day for two months.  It’s embarrassing, especially when MK messes up and hits himself, or something, again.
Mei is a good distraction.  She takes him to his favorite places, reminding him of the things he forgot.  How to have fun.  How to relax.
Monkey King is very...gentle isn’t the right word.  But protective?  Perhaps.  MK stumbles during a kata and he’s getting his legs checked out by a suspicious monkey.
He thinks Monkey King is embarrassed that he couldn’t tell MK was hurt.  That must be it.
Eventually, the bruises fade.  His knuckles have a few scars, but he throws away the gloves regardless.
“You’re getting better,” Monkey King tells him one day, when he swings the staff, willing it to stretch out to hit the dummy twenty feet away.
MK smiles.
He’s getting better.

MK-S: Dark Souls update.
Not much to say for today. Kinda just poking and prodding some areas. Giant skeletons in the tomb of giants are currently a bit too much, since I need divine weapons, but the +10 divine ember is buried somewhere in there. My +5 divine gargoyle halberd just wasn’t quite cutting it so I decided to come back to there later on. (Oh, and lost 20,000 souls to those dang pinwheel skeletons. Eh, it’s not as hard to get that many souls if I really need them, but still a lot for the loss of them to be painful. Did some research and found the skeleton fire smith too. Man, lights are handy things in these dark places.)
Started exploring the demon realm: lesson one; those spider egg leaches that burst from egg carriers are a pain and a half, so don’t kill the egg carriers. Giant fire tentacles melted-man-face thing was actually surprisingly chill, didn’t try to bash me in, spit fire, etc…until I picked up the robes of the first witch. That’s when “Ceaseless Discharge” lost his S***. (No pun intended, but I’m definitely keeping it in now that I see it. A bit crude, but hey, it got a chuckle out of me, so it gets to live through the editing process.) Took him out first try with the Greatsword of Artorius. It was an epic battle of him taking out 3/4 of my health, my getting back up, swing my sword at the tentacles, chug an estus while I’m wearing Havel’s armor and he winds up, and repeat the not-really-epic cycle. 20 estus for the win!
Oh, and I realized something tragic about the skeletons in New Lando: notice how there was that mountain of bones once you drained the water? Quite possibly. Ever wonder why they were all focused in that one area? My guess: everyone had fled for the gate to the valley of drakes, only to find the doors locked. They then tried to seek higher ground, hence why the bodies are away from the gate, but swarming around the stairs and platforms. And these people lived in a mountainous area, so it’s quite possible none of them could swim. Such dark and beautiful tragedy, told in the environment. You gotta applaud FromSoft on that sort of thing.
Well, it’s late for me here. I’m off to bed. Have a good day! (And I hope these progress logs are entertaining for you and everyone else!)
There's a much easier way to defeat the big demon dude. You could've just started running back to where you came from once he got triggered, and he'll follow you.
Except, once you're far enough he'll hold onto the ledge with his hand which you can attack and kill him with with basically 0 effort lol!
