Why and How to Rotate Tyres for a Longer Lifespan
As tyres have been shown to have an almost unlimited shelf life when stored in a climate-controlled warehouse, it’s highly possible that, even without access to such a warehouse, regular maintenance, tyres lifespans on the road could be made to last up to a decade, according to Chris Lett of Branigans Tyres in Queensland. And one of the best ways to do so would be to rotate the tyres every 3 000 to 8 000 miles, or sooner if signs of wear on one side of a tyre is noticed.
He says that by rotating tyres, uneven and excessive tread wear is balanced out, and the lifespan of the tyre is preserved, saving car owners from the costly experience of prematurely replacing tyres that are badly worn on one side.
However, Lett says that rotating tyres is not always as simple as it sounds. There are a number of factors to consider, with the main one being that not all tyres can be rotated, so when thinking of attempting to rotate tyres at home, it’s well worth doing some research beforehand.
Read: Quality Budget Used Tyres Southport Recycled Secondhand Affordable Premium Brand
Types of Tyres that can be Rotated
Lett explains, “If the tyres are directional tyres, meaning the tread pattern is designed to work in only one direction, they can only be rotated between the front and back, but not swapped sideways across the car from left to right (or right to left), as this would mean the tread would be pointing in the wrong direction.
Non-directional tyres which are all the same size can be switched between front and back, from left to right, and even diagonally. In performance cars, which usually use staggered tyre sizes, with larger tyres at the back can only be rotated with a matching size, and therefore the switch can only be made from side to side.
Wheel size is also an important factor, according to Chris Lett. He says some vehicles have the same size tyres, but some have wheels with slightly different offsets, which again means they are not the same as those on the opposing end of the car. Lett says they can therefore only be rotated from side to side, and, once again, that is only if the tyres are not directional. The differences may not be noticeable to the eye, so checking the owner’s manual for the specs on wheel sizes is advisable.

How to Rotate Tyres
Lett advises that all tyres should be marked as they come off the wheel to avoid confusion later on. The process can be complicated and it is easy to lose track of which tyre came off which wheel.
“The simplest rotation is rotating the front and back tyres. This is done by placing a jack at the front and back wheels, and using the multiple jack points available on the vehicle as described in the owner’s manual.
Ensure the jacks are stable before removing the wheels by blocking the wheels that are still on the ground in order to prevent movement. If all four tyres are to be rotated, four jacks will be needed,” Lett says.
There are two rotation methods that can be applied, one of them more dangerous for those who are inexperienced. This involves raising the car on all four jacks and changing the tyres round with the vehicle off the ground. A more time consuming but less risky option is to raise and lower the car a few times to complete each rotation separately.
Rotating tyres can be complex. Speak to an expert to get the right advice. Visit or call Chris and his team for Second Hand Tyres Gold Coast |Branigans Budget Tyres at Burleigh Heads (07) 5535 2660 or Southport (07) 5591 8633.

Hi,
If we were having a coffee this week I might force you to have a Southport version of the Unicorn Frappuccino instead.
I had no idea that unicorns tasted so fruity.  I was expecting something meaty, maybe along to lines of Bovril.  No such thing.
As I write, I’m absolutely shattered so maybe we should have caffeine! Yesterday was a really fun day, but a long and tiring one.  I went down to Wembley to watch the Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko boxing match.  I’m not going to write too much  about the fight here now cause I’m going to do a dedicated post in the next few days.  You don’t have to be a boxing fan to read it either, so please come back to check it out.
(Those promotional sentences still feel a bit wrong!)
This is the story of the day anyway and some thoughts.
I got the bus down from Manchester at 8.30am which meant it was an early start.  I’m not a fan of long journeys where I’m not in control of when and where we stop, so I got to the city early to get supplies and have as many last minute toilet visits I could squeeze in!
The bus set off on time and it was a pretty easy journey.  There were only two annoyances.
The first was the sun shining brightly through red plastic.  That wasn’t as annoying as the guy behind having to put his hands over the seat next to mine.  I bet he’s one of those people who, when he sits in the back of a car, is one of those who has to lean forward to talk to the people in the front so the only thing you can see in the rear view mirror is his face.
I also contemplated the use of the word “f*ck”.  I think I’ll right a parental advisory explicit content post on this one too.
The bus arrived at Wembley stadium just before 1pm with gates opening at 17.30 and the boxing starting at 18.30.  For anyone who has never, there are two important things to know about Wembley – there isn’t much to do other than eat and drink (that’s not too bad, obviously!) and it’s always cold.
I saw this guy taking a classic no look selfie.
I took a normal selfie to prove I was there / could you use Photoshop (the latter for those of you who are more cynical and think I actually stayed at home in my PJs).
It was a bad hair day but if I was having to get up early on a Saturday to go to an event like this I wasn’t going  to make too much effort.
I also planned my next Wembley visit.  Who wouldn’t want to see Steps live? It would be a “tragedy” not to.
While sitting in front of the Arena I was interested by “fashion” (says someone distinctly unfashionable).  Women can wear fashionable clothes or pretty much anything and look amazing, but things seen as fashionable for men look daft to me.  I know people like skinny jeans and things that fit well look good, but skinny jeans that enable you to see outlines of all sorts are just wrong.
When these skinny jeans are rolled half way up calves and accompanied by silly shoes they look worse.  Even worse still is when they’re worn by gym bros for whom size is everything because you have to be genetically blessed to be able to balance torso and leg size.
The gates opened on time and I went in straight away to find my seat and food.  The food was a hotdog and 6 Krispy Kreme doughnuts, two of which were saved for breakfast this morning.  I also bought a programme and was disappointed to find a typo in something that cost me £10.
The boxing started with a fairly long undercard, although two of the fights didn’t happen for some reason.
I’m a little conflicted about boxing.  Every sport, when you boil it down, is a simple and rather boring sounding affair.  Football is people trying to kick a ball in to a net.  Motorsport is people driving fast machines, often in circles.  Boxing is two people trying to hit each other in the face and, when viewed as such, probably shouldn’t even be seen as a sport.  If it was animals fighting, wed have banned it and I’m not sure consent to being punched in the face is suitable justification.
Two men in the crowd decided to stage their own match and got arrested.
And yet the fighters come out in sparkling shorts and fancy gowns to music and flashing lights.  Punters get dressed up in suits and arse skimming dresses (in one case last night it was skimming the top of her arse rather than the bottom of it, too).  The whole thing is incongruous because it’s brutal, boring on the surface but fundamentally, deep down, entertainment for participants and spectators alike.
Anyway, I did find myself really getting in to it, especially the main event.  I found myself biting my nails and rubbing my chin – things I always do when I’m pensive.  When Joshua won, I was really pleased for him.
The atmosphere inside Wembley was electric.  I’ve been there before when capacity is 80,000 and usually split between two opposing teams.  This was 90,000 people of whom at least 89,000 were supporting the home town boy.  When the referee ended the contest, the roof came off.  It was an amazing experience.
The bus was back on the road by midnight.  Aware that I had to be behind the wheel myself in four hours or so, I tried to get some sleep which I largely managed.  However, I had a window seat and bus windows make very cold pillows.  My nose and the left side of my face were far too chilly to sleep properly.
Also this week I found an absolute bargain table cloth.
What a find.
If you read my post last Sunday you might remember I was feeling a little low.  This week has been a little better, but still up and down.  The person in question and I used to talk about dreams, trying to translate the ones we had.  We seemed to dream prolifically on opposing moon phases!  Dreams should always be translated as what they mean to the dreamer, but whenever I looked at hers they always had a theme of being affected by something in the past that she couldn’t quite shake and that that interfered with what she really wanted.
I had a dream including her for the first time in ages last week.  There were a group of us there, wherever it was.  We walked past a cafe and two of the cast of Neighbours were sat at an outside table.  They were drinking tea with beans in and I pointed it out cause she liked tea and, while I’m not a massive fan of beans, there is a connection there.
Nothing has changed at work, for anyone interested.  I’m getting annoyed by a lack of paperwork and a lack of anyone showing an interest.
I forgot to post two new Pokémon last week, partly because they’re not exactly new.  But, for those interested which I anticipate is fewer than those who care about my work situation, here is a party hat male Raichu and a female Raichu.
Hope you had a great week.  Now drink up – I need to go back to bed.
Here at night In a lost and lonely part of town Held in time In a wad of tears I slowly drown Going home I just can’t make it all alone I really should be holding you holding you , loving you Loving you
Tragedy… When the feelings gone And you can’t go on it’s Tragedy… When the morning cries And you don’t know why , it’s Hard to bear With no-one to love you Your going nowhere Tragedy…
When you lose control And you got no soul , it’s Tragedy… When the morning cries And you don’t know why , it’s Hard to bear With no-one beside you Your goin’ nowhere
Night and day There’s a burnin’ down inside of me Burnin’ love With a yearning that won’t Let me be Down I go And I just can’t take it all alone I really should be holding you Holding you , loving you Loving you
Tragedy… When the feelings gone And you can’t go on it’s Tragedy… When the morning cries And you don’t know why , it’s Hard to bear With no-one to love you Your going nowhere
Tragedy… When you lose control And you got no soul , it’s Tragedy… When the morning cries And you don’t know why , it’s Hard to bear With no-one beside you Your goin’ nowhere
Tragedy… When the feelings gone And you can’t go on it’s Tragedy… When the morning cries And you don’t know why , it’s Hard to bear With no-one to love you Your going nowhere
Tragedy… When you lose control And you got no soul , it’s Tragedy… When the morning cries And your heart just dies Hard to bear With no-one beside you Your goin’ nowhere
Tragedy by Steps (in this instance)

Study Up Before Buying Replacement Tyres to Save Unnecessary Costs
Not all tyre salesmen deserve the poor reputation society has placed on them, says Australian tyre expert and recycler Chris Lett. He says many salespeople in the tyre industry are just going about and doing their best selling tyres which are low profit items in a market where wages are often based on commission. But, while it may be understandable that some of them might want to add more to the sale, he said it’s important that customers are aware that this does happen, and are equally well informed in terms of what they need, so as to avoid being talked into buying add-ons or the wrong tyres.
“Asking questions and doing some research is the best way to lessen the chances of walking into a tyre outlet intent on only replacing one or two tyres, but leaving having replaced all four tyres (and the spare tyre, if there is one),” Lett said.

Knowing When to Repair or Replace Tyres
However, he said it’s important that customers don’t reject all advice and recommendations, thinking they may be aimed at bigger sales. As an example, he says that most punctures repaired with a plug can last up to 10 years if properly done, but this isn’t always an option and the tyre or tyres may have to be replaced.
“If a puncture is larger than 6mm, is on the wall or shoulder of the tyre, or if there are bulges, cracks or discoloration on the sidewall, repairing will not be possible. And If the tread is worn below the legal tread limit of 1.5mm or the tyres are 10 years or older, even if they still look fine, the rubber will have deteriorated, and the structure will have become compromised”.

Avoiding extras
“Often pressure is put on the customer to do a brake replacement, oil change or service at the same time as a tyre repair or replacement. This may not be necessary, and it is best to follow the service schedule provided by the manufacturer in the owners’ manual,” says Lett.
“When it comes to wheel alignment, some dealers offer complimentary alignment, mounting and fitting, but most don’t. It is not necessary for an alignment to be done if all four tyres are replaced. However, if only one or two are replaced, it certainly is necessary for the older tyres to be balanced with the new ones.”
If in need of a tyre replacement or repair, speak to tyre expert Chris Lett, owner of Branigans Tyres in Queensland. They offer hardly-used, top quality recycled tyres at less than half the cost of new ones.

Your Tyres’ Health Determines Your Safety on the Road
One of the most overlooked causes of vehicle accidents and poor vehicle performance, is faulty tyres, says Australian veteran tyre recycling expert Chris Lett. He emphasises the importance of regularly inspecting and maintaining your tyres, and the importance of checking their health before navigating the roads, especially if the car’s been standing for long periods without use.
Lett says the list of dangers attached to driving with old or damaged tyres, incorrect pressure and worn tread, is long, especially if the road is unsurfaced, wet, icy, or pitted with potholes. Any of these can call for longer braking distances and raise the chances of skidding, as well as resulting in a tyre blowout, poor vehicle performance, and the danger of injury or death for you, your passengers and others on the road.
“Any of these situations can cause immediate loss of control of the vehicle, potentially causing it to veer or roll. In this situation, you should not use your brakes to stop the vehicle, but rather use the gears to slow it down,” Lett says.

Preventing the Unthinkable
To avoid finding yourself in a dire situation, Lett said it is vital to become aware of anything unusual in the car’s performance while on the road, such as unusual vibrations or sounds while driving, as this could be a sign you have a problem with your tyres. It is also necessary to check tyres regularly, and pay close attention in the process. A quick glance, or kicking the tyre, is not sufficient.
“Very important is to regularly check the rims, treads and tyres. Make sure nothing is wedged into the tread or rubber, and check that the sides of the tyres are free from cracks, splits or cuts, or any strange bulges and bumps,” Lett says.
Tyre Maintenance, the Do’s and Don’ts
Wash your tyres regularly with soap and water, cleaning off any road debris and chemicals that may degrade the tyre, check all valve caps are present and bolts correctly tightened, and look out for any signs of uneven wear or bald spots.
Check the pressure of your tyres once a month when the tyres are cold for better accuracy. The tyre specs for your vehicle can be found in the vehicle manual or on the label on the inside of the driver’s door. These specs will give you the correct pressure for the tyre size and speed/load ratings for your vehicle.
Look out for lumps, bumps and tears: Situations such as hitting a pothole or obstacle in the road can cause wheel alignment to go out of balance and cause internal damage to the tyre. Squealing tyres, the car pulling to one side when driving straight, and uneven tyre wear, are all signs of damage.
Keep an Eye on the tread: Check the tread on all your tyres regularly. A tyre has markers called TWI (Tread Wear Indicators) which are placed evenly in the main grooves in the tyre tread. These give a visual indication of how much tread is left on your tyre. If they are worn down to the level of the TWS, it is time to replace the tyre. Another method is to use a tyre tread depth gauge.

Balancing, Wheel Alignment and Rotation: Lett recommends visiting a tyre specialist at least every 10,000 km to check wheel balance and alignment, and rotating your tyres in order to ensure the long life and health of the tyres.
Replacing tyres
Many people may take a chance on delaying tyre replacement because they can’t afford to purchase new ones. This is where good quality recycled tyres come in at a fraction of the cost. Lett stresses the importance of ensuring recycled tyres have been tested and graded by a reputable dealer, who will  provide you with safe tyres with a good few years of use still left in them.
Lett’s Branigans Tyres in Burleigh Heads and Southport stocks well-known brand names such as Continental, Avon, Bridgestone, Michelin, Dunlop, Firestone and Goodyear. All recycled tyres are thoroughly checked and graded for age, tread and projected functional life-span before being sold to customers at budget prices.

Regular Cleaning May Keep Your Tyres Turning Longer
Failing to maintain your car tyres can be seen as a four-fold crime. It’s operating against the law, putting your safety in jeopardy, and affecting your car’s performance, according to Australian tyre expert, Chris Lett. And it’s also cutting short the lifespan of the tyres, which is going to steal from your family budget, even if you save a good deal of money by buying recycled tyres from a safe outlet like Branigans in Queensland.

Keeping Tyres Clean of Debris
Lett said that while consistent tyre pressure, wheel alignment, balancing and rotation, as well as limiting exposure to the elements, are at the top of the list when it comes to tyre maintenance, many people are unaware of, or pay little attention to another possible villain in the fight against tyre degradation – dirt and road debris that can shorten tyre life.
He said that when washing the car and checking out its condition, many car owners don’t think to shift their focus below the car’s body and take a close look at the tyres. This stops them from seeing the early warning signs of the onset of damage to tyres, and taking the necessary steps to avoid trouble down the line and the destruction it can cause.
And it’s even less often, Lett said, that motorists realise the importance of washing the tyres thoroughly with soap and water regularly when they routinely clean the car. Yet, this can help prevent some of the almost certain damage that can follow when dust and dirt is left on the rubber, and so lengthen the lifespan of the tyres.
More Than Just a Hose-off
Lett said he’s not just suggesting a quick hose-off when arriving home after a long trip down one of Australia’s many unpaved roads, which is often done for aesthetic reasons. That’s because a light splash of water may not be enough to remove the more stubborn dirt and unknown substances kicked up from any road surface. And if it fails to do so, the road debris which remains on the tyres can easily lead to damage and degradation.

Road Debris Hold Hidden Dangers for Tyres
Without even taking into account the sharp items like nails, broken glass and other solid materials which can lead to obvious damage in the form of punctures, and blow-outs, the road can hold, and then release, other less visible threats to tyres which are not as easy to identify, according to the Burleigh Heads recycled tyre expert.
“The road is full of other materials and particles such as dust, dirt, bits of asphalt, pebbles, seeds, leaves and the aftermath of chemical spills. Many of these less obvious, and sometimes almost invisible, items can be on your tyres after a drive, and can start to eat away at the rubber,” Lett said.
Lett’s Branigans Budget Tyres outlet centres around the sale of high quality recycled tyres at budget prices. These have been checked vigilantly for every sign of degradation or damage, which Lett says can manifest themselves in various ways, from cracks on the side-wall of the tyre to broken, damaged or worn-down tread. And while not all tyre damage can be attributed to failure to keep them clean, a certain amount of the tyres degradation could certainly be attached to the road surfaces the car was driven on.
