For those who don't know, the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing a case that essentially will decide whether cities can criminalize being homeless if they're unable to provide adequate shelter to take people off the streets.

The people arguing for the right to say fuck the poor are basically arguing that, without being able to fine/imprison people without homes, they can't manage encampments and their towns will become unsafe and unsanitary. Basically, they don't want to address the issues causing rampant houselessness in their areas and, you know, govern for the public good, they want to take the easy way out and kick the can (or rather the homeless) down the road and hope the problem vanishes from their sight.

Even the Justice Department has weighed in and said people shouldn't be punished for sleeping outside when it's determined they have nowhere else to go.

"The case comes from the rural Oregon town of Grants Pass, which started fining people $295 for sleeping outside to manage homeless encampments that sprung up in the city's public parks as the cost of housing escalated.

The measure was largely struck down by the San Francisco-based 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which also found in 2018 that such bans violated the Eighth Amendment by punishing people for something they don't have control over. The 9th Circuit oversees nine Western states, including California, which is home to about one-third of the nation's homeless population.

He is the eldest of six children of Rev. Elton and Sarah Elizabeth Pointer, pastors at the West Oakland Church of God. He is the older brother of Fritz Pointer, a college professor and author, and Ruth, Anita, Bonnie, and June Pointer of the Pointer Sisters.

The Machame route on Kilimanjaro is a moderately difficult trail, but very doable even for first-time backpackers with little to no altitude experience. Known as the "Whiskey" route, the Machame route is now the most popular route on the mountain. Compared with Marangu, the days on Machame are longer and the walks are steeper. The Machame route is considered difficult and is best suited for those who are more adventurous and have some hiking or backpacking experience. The route begins from the south, then heads east, traversing underneath Kilimanjaro's southern ice field before summiting. The minimum number of days required for this route is six, although seven days is recommended. The Machame route is scenically beautiful and varied. However, due to the heavy crowds, it loses some of its spenders.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp Elevation (ft): (3,000 m): 5. 6,000 ft (1,830 m) to 10,200 ft (3,100 m). Distance: 11 km. Hiking Time: 5-7 hours Habitat: montane forest. Camp: Machame Camp. The drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame, which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. We now leave the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. Lower down, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp Barranco Camp to Barafu Hut Camp {4600m} 6-8 hours. 4000m/13,000ft to 4700m/15,350ft Distance: 9km/ Walking Time: 6-8 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert Full Board at Barafu Camp. After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge up the Barranco Wall (elves 4250m/13,900ft), through the Karanga Valley (elves 4050m/13,250ft) to the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. Day 5: Barafu Camp to Summit, down to Mweka Camp Elevation (ft): 4700m (15,350ft) to 5895m (19,343ft) down to 3090m (10,150ft) Distance: 6km up; 13km down Hiking Time: 5-7 hours up; 5-6 hours down Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 a.m.), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Reitzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point, you will stop for a short rest and be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit. From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa! Papingo, Vikos Aoos National Park

There were storms overnight, with rain drumming so hard on the roof that I struggled to hear the film I was watching and had to turn on the subtitles.

After a few nights of watching stuff from the horror genre I can recommend only one film at the moment, an Argentinian folk horror called When Evil Lurks, and something much shorter and older that I’m enjoying, the original series of The Twilight Zone, from 1959. They’re a bit hit or miss, but the less good ones are still 6 out of 10. There are some really good ideas, and it’s no wonder they went down so well at the time.

I drove on this morning, after a quick walk to the village War Memorial, which commemorates their dead from 1943. A walk with the wispy mist that had covered us earlier in the morning, now lifting amongst the jagged peaks, to give a fine day.

More winding roads, 20 mph at most, and a descent into Konitsa, where I used the supermarket, and continued south, regaining the height I’d just lost, into the the opposite side of the Tymfi massif, up numerous hairpins, to Papingo.

This was a recommendation from Hugh, who was here cycling in May, when there was still snow on the tops. It’s the perfect time for a visit at the moment. I’m sure there’s usually lots of tourists, but today just a handful. Like many of the villages here in the mountains of Western Greece it is nestled into a nook in the steep forested slopes. But this is particularly striking in appearance, and there is much more infrastructure, in terms of hotels, cafes, and restaurants.

Above Papingo, about 100 metres above, on another winding road, is the smaller sister village of Mikro Papingo. After lunch, Roja and I took a track that headed down into the valley, dropped a couple of hundred metres, before climbing back up through the forest to the smaller village. There was a couple of restaurants there, and some more holiday type accommodation. It is also the starting point for trails into the higher hills. We completed the circuit by returning on the road, which was quiet, just a couple of vehicles passing us.
