Found this when scouting for Oz books at a used bookstore j frequent. This copy was substantially higher priced than the other two Oz books I purchased that day (the others were reprints from the 90s) but after some research I think this book was reprinted in the 30’s or 40’s—my best guess is 1941. Do you know which edition this is?

Disabled Lesbians Blockade Music Festival
Four disabled lesbians — one in a wheelchair and three in scooters — were threatened with arrest when they blocked a public road at the First Annual East Coast Lesbians' Festival in West Stockbridge, MA.
Along with several able- bodied supporters, they were protesting what they called the lack of accessibility for differently-abled lesbians at the festival, held September 1–4 [1989] at a hilly 200-acre private camp.
The women issued a call for all festivalgoers to demand their money back and leave the site, and attempted to turn back lesbians Who were just arriving.
"You women here are continuing to create inaccessible culture," said Mary Francis Platt, one of the disabled protesters. "Go home. It's your responsibility to create accessible culture."
[...]
At a tense roadside "town meeting," as the police waited nearby, the protesters addressed a crowd of over 100 women. They complained that the ramping of camp buildings for wheelchair access was inadequate, hydraulic lift shuttle trucks were not equipped to handle scooters, and in general the land was inaccessible because it was too hilly.
"Able-bodied women are not dealing with the fact that we are lesbians who are being excluded because we can't be here — the land isn't safe," said Bonnie Louison, speaking from her wheelchair.
A number of other disabled lesbians did, however, attend the festival, holding meetings and workshops in what was called the Triple-A (All About Accessibility) tent at the same time the protesters were blocking the road above.
At the end of the hour-long meeting it was agreed that the protesters would hold a two hour educational session later that day. After the session, which was more sparsely attended than the town meeting, the protesters left the festival and did not return.
Festival coordinator Lin Daniels, who was visibly shaken by the protesters' accusations, said that with only three months to plan the festival, she had to take the West Stockbridge site because everything else was already booked. "If we'd had the choice of a place even moderately more accessible I would have chosen that the fact is we didn't have any choice."
[...]
Catherine Odette, one of the "All About Accessibility" workshop leaders, said that telling women to demand their money back and go home was "an inflammatory tactic which doesn't advance the cause of accessibility," and that she was personally "committed to seeing that festivals will become only more accessible in only more ways."
Other differently-abled women at the tent agreed that the land was difficult, and in some places impossible, for women with mobility limitations, and that there many other problems, including getting food to women who could not get to the dining hall. Information packets at the AAA tent included handouts of a first draft of a "three-year plan" for improving accessibility at all women's festivals.
"I think there's been an attempt made at this festival to at least begin recognizing broader forms of accessibility," said Sara Karon, a disabled lesbian in the AAA area. "It hasn't been successful, but that's because it takes time, and we're all learning, and my being here was to help people to learn."
"I'd like people to consider the issue of finding lesbian space," said Daniels, who has already rejected the West Stockbridge site for next year's festival. "It's hard to find any kind of lesbian space in this country, but we have all our hearts and energy behind finding a more accessible space for next year."
— Jorjet Harper, OutWeek Magazine No. 15, October 1, 1989, p. 15.

Edna St. Vincent Millay
(Feb. 22nd 1892 - Oct. 19th 1950)
Brief Bio:
Edna St. Vincent Millay was born the eldest of three sisters in New York.  Her middle name came from St. Vincent's Hospital where she was born, and where her uncle evaded death.  She began publishing poetry as a teenager and went on to study at Vassar College.  Her themes covered many subjects, from war to female sexuality, which earned her quite a reputation as a controversial poet.  Openly bisexual, she rubbed elbows with many influential writers of the time, and kept numerous lovers, even during her marriage.  After a prosperous career as a poet and playwright, she died of a heart attack in her home and was found eight hours later at the foot of the stairs.
Notable Works:
Renascence (1912)
Aria da capo (1919 play)
Euclid alone has looked on Beauty bare (1922)
The Ballad of the Harp-Weaver (1923)
Notable Awards:
Pulitzer Prize for Poetry (1923)
Robert Frost Medal (1943)
The Grave:
Edna is buried on the grounds of her historic home of Steepletop.  The house is a museum, high on a hill where cell phone reception completely disappears.  A dirt road called the Millay Poetry Trail starts not far from the museum parking lot.  Several signs along the trail give quotes from her more famous poems.  At the end of the trail is a clearing where Edna, her husband, and her sisters are buried.
Steepletop
440 East Hill Rd.
Austerlitz, NY 12017
Tumblr media
Surrounding Area:
Steepletop is an isolated place, which was probably why Millay liked it.  The grounds are also home to the Millay Colony for the Arts, a popular artist retreat center where authors can focus on their work without distraction.  The lack of cell reception comes in handy for this.  One may follow NY-22 onto State Line Rd. and from there go to West Stockbridge, MA, which is full of restaurants and shopping destinations.
