🔮🌫️ **The Smurl Haunting: A Tale of Unrelenting Paranormal Activity** 🌫️🔮
In the heart of America, nestled in the quaint town of West Pittston, Pennsylvania, the Smurl family faced unimaginable terror from 1974 to 1989. What started as subtle disturbances soon escalated into a relentless series of inexplicable and violent phenomena within their family home. The walls seemed to whisper with unseen voices, shadows danced in the corners, and a palpable sense of dread settled like a fog over their lives. 😱👻
Unyielding in their resolve, the Smurls sought answers and assistance. Their cries for help echoed through the townsfolk, ultimately reaching the ears of renowned demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren. With each visit, the Warrens faced off against an unholy force that defied explanation, turning skeptics into believers and leaving the family in a prolonged state of unrest. 🌑⚡
This gripping narrative beckons us to question what lies beyond our perception and reminds us of the courage within everyday people when confronted with the extraordinary. Dive with us into the chilling details of the Smurl Haunting, exploring not only the events that transpired but also the legacy it left behind in the annals of paranormal history. 🌙📚

Gonâve Island or Zile Lagonav is an island of Haiti located west-northwest of Port-au-Prince in the Gulf of Gonâve
On July 18, 1926, U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Faustin E. Wirkus (1896–1945) was proclaimed by the residents of the island as King Faustin II, where he ruled over the island with the tribal queen Ti Mememnne as co-monarchs. His reign lasted until 1929, when he peacefully abdicated and returned home to the United States.[6] Ti Memenne would continue to unofficially rule the island until her death in that same year. For context, Haiti is a republic and abolished the monarchy in 1859 with Fabre Nicolas Geffrard.
According to an official biography,[5] Wirkus was born in 1896 in Rypin (Congress Poland, in the Russian Empire) a small town now in Poland, however, numerous ship passenger lists (records of the U.S. Customs Service) show his correct birth place as Pittston, Pennsylvania.[6] He and his parents settled in Dupont, Pennsylvania, a coal mining community northwest of Wilkes-Barre, where he was raised.[5] At the age of 11, he started sorting coal in Pittston.
Wirkus enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1915 and served in the 1st Advance Base Brigade in Haiti and rose to the rank of corporal in 1918 then to gunnery sergeant in 1920.[7] During his service in the Marine Corps, he was promoted to a lieutenant in the Garde d'Haiti, commanding a squad of native troops on La Gonâve. After rescuing a young woman in trouble, he found out that she was Queen Timemenne of La Gonâve. He was welcomed by the population as Timemenne had told them how kind he was to her, and in part, due to the unusual circumstance that he had the same first name as the former emperor of Haiti, Faustin Soulouque, later known as Faustin I ("Faustin the First"), who died in 1867. Somewhat bizarrely, the natives proclaimed him Faustin II in a Voodoo ritual[8] and he ruled jointly with Queen Timemenne for three years.[5][8][9] He became known for dispensing ready but gentle justice.[10]
Queen Ti Memenne of La Gonâve (also written as Timemenne; 19th-century – fl. 1929) was the tribal ruler of La Gonâve, a Haitian island located west of Hispaniola in the Gulf of Gonâve, in the 1920s. While her reign was not officially recognized by the republican government of Haiti during American occupation, she maintained political, economic, spiritual, and social leadership of the island. Arrested by the Garde d'Haiti for being a practitioner of Vodou, she was shown compassion by Faustin E. Wirkus, an American military officer who assisted in her release. She later proclaimed Wirkus to be the reincarnation of former Haitian Emperor Faustin Soulouque and crowned him as a co-ruler over La Gonâve.
???
i THINK the only direct sources for this are this guy's memoir and the magic island by william seabrook which seems pretty sensationalist. so i think this might not have happened. the us military believes it though

If there's one group of American workers used to labor battles, it's miners. Consider the literal gunfights in the West Virginia mountains a century ago, or the 50,000 coal miners striking across 11 states during the Pittston Coal Strike of 1989. Consider too that coal is a feast-or-famine industry, and miners know the importance of saving up. "Every old coal miner tells you that you prepare for the next day because you don't know what to expect for that next day," said Antwon McGhee, a striking Alabama coal miner. Of course, many miners' savings have dried up by now. That's where having a strike-seasoned union, like the United Mine Workers of America in this case, helps. The union knows it has to take care of those most vulnerable, said Kate Bronfenbrenner, director of Labor Education Research at Cornell University — like supporting a young miner with a mortgage and a new baby, or an older miner with health issues and higher medical bills. "They work as a community to do that," Bronfenbrenner said. Every two weeks, the striking miners rally outside of a local union hall in Brookwood before shuffling inside to pick up $800 checks. Around the one-year mark, the United Mine Workers of America said it had given out $20 million to workers.

The Great Pro-Wrestling Adventure Hour - 012 08/03/23 Defy TV 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM EST Filmed at the Good Time Theatre at Dorney Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania
SEGMENT ONE (EIGHT MINUTES):
Tumblr media
- Sudu Upadhyay opened the show speaking on the Dorney Park special premiere screening last night of Meg 2: The Trench from visionary director Ben Wheatley, and that today on The Great Pro-Wrestling Adventure Hour, we not only have our own Trench as his trial series continues, but also our own megalodon, "The Living Legend" Larry Zbyszko. Larry says that last week he drew Starfish Charlie and the rest of those bottom feeders to the surface and will soon be depositing them on a garbage barge where they belong. Sudu agreed that might happen soon, but not today, as Kerry Morton, Starboy Charlie, and Marcus Mathers are preparing for a Trios Kingdom qualifying match this Saturday in Scranton and will not be appearing today. Zbyszko has talked to the staff at Dorney Park and will be alerted if any of them come through the turnstiles. Sudu stated that only Brogan Finlay and Ricky Morton are in the building today for their match against MV Young and Bryan Keith. Larry adds that Kylie Paige is also in the building, Sudu mentions Kylie’s claim not to have had any contact with Morton or his followers, including her own sister, which draws an eye roll from Zbyszko.
- The Great Pro-Wrestling Adventure Hour opening aired set to "Black Swan Lake" by Janko Nilovic.
- Raychell Rose accompanied The Alien Rocket to the ring, her first assigned client as she works toward fulfilling the requirements to obtain her official Pennsylvania Pro-Wrestling Manager License.
Tumblr media
Fuego Del Sol vs. The Alien Rocket (with Raychell Rose) Fuego Del Sol defeated The Alien Rocket with the tornado DDT. (3:45)
- Cameras followed Raychell Rose and Rocket to the back as she tried to discuss strategy with him, the camera briefly focused on Kylie Paige talking to "The Bounty Hunter" Bryan Keith backstage.
SEGMENT TWO (EIGHT MINUTES):
Tumblr media
Trench Trial Series - Match 2 Trench vs. MAO MAO defeated Trench with the shooting star press. (3:30)
Tumblr media
- From the CORE news desk, it's Daphne Oz with the Coal Region Roundup.
- Daphne previewed The Risky Raffle this Saturday night taking place as part of the West Scranton Little League Carnival. She announced that in addition to Lio Rush, Flamita, and Francesco Akira, she can now confirm that Titus Alexander will be making his CORE return this Saturday night.
- Daphne reminded the audience that the members of the winning Risky Raffle teams will enter an over the top rope battle royal and the winner of that was to receive a surprise reward. Well, she can now disclose that surprise as the winner of the Risky Royal will receive a shot at New Japan's STRONG Openweight Championship when they face champion Eddie Kingston on August 21st at part of the Pittston Tomato Festival.
- To close out the Risky Raffle preview, as was mentioned earlier in the broadcast Kerry Morton, Starboy Charlie, and Marcus Mathers will be participating in a Trios Kingdom 2023 qualifying match as they take on members of the Young Dumb N Broke faction; Charlie Tiger, Ellis Taylor, and Griffin McCoy.
- Daphne Oz said it was time to reveal the final two trios receiving an automatic bid into Trios Kingdom 2023. First, from the CMLL promotion is the Los Cancerberos del Infierno trio of Cancerbero, Luciferno, and Virus. And second, joining us from the STARDOM office and representing Donna del Mondo - Giulia, Maika, and Thekla will participate in Trios Kingdom.
- Closing out the segment, Daphne announced that in addition to the qualifying match this weekend, next week on Defy TV we will have another Trios Kingdom qualifying match that is sure to be a high flying affair as from CMLL the Los Magnificos trio of Adrenalina, Explosivo, and Fantastico will face off against The Air Show of Jah'Zel, Razerwyng, and Mach10.
SEGMENT THREE (NINE MINUTES):
Tumblr media
MV Young and "The Bounty Hunter" Bryan Keith vs. Brogan Finlay and Ricky Morton Brogan Finlay and Ricky Morton defeated MV Young and "The Bounty Hunter" Bryan Keith with a top rope elbowdrop from Finlay on MV. (4:01)
- "The Bounty Hunter" Bryan Keith allowed MV Young to begin the match and abandoned him when he went for the tag. MV Young was defeated by Finlay and Morton and the two continued their attack after the match. When confronted by Larry Zbyszko, The Bounty Hunter did the universal sign for money with his fingers, implying that his services were purchased by someone in the Kerry Morton camp. Despite their match later in the broadcast - Shaw Mason, Tim Bosby, and Hunter Holdcraft ran down and chased off Finlay and Morton. Shaw Mason got on the microphone and reminded Finlay that he forced Brogan to tap out to the ankle lock back in Wilkes-Barre and he'd be happy to do it again next week on Defy TV!
Tumblr media
- We cut to the private dressing room of The Family Tree where Afa Jr. asks their advisor Smart Guy Tod Gordon why he has not scheduled them for any matches since they qualified for Trios Kingdom. Smart Guy informed Afa that Journey Fatu approached him about wanting the group to stay healthy before Trios Kingdom. Afa Jr. demanded to know why Journey did not come to his Tribal Elder with these concerns. Afa questioned Journey's commitment; perhaps he's planning to leave The Family Tree to team with Zilla Fatu rather than his partner Sean Maluta. Journey denied this and appreciated his Tribal Elder even before Afa demanded he do so. Maluta and Tod Gordon also appreciated their Tribal Elder and swore their loyalty to The Family Tree.
SEGMENT FOUR (TEN MINUTES):
Tumblr media
Utami Hayashishita vs. Giant Baba Yaga (with UltraMantis Black) Giant Baba Yaga defeated Utami Hayashishita with the running neckbreaker. (9:09)
- Utami Hayashishita offered to shake hands with Giant Baba Yaga after the match, and while Baba did not do that, Baba did place an American Rebel cigar in Utami's hand as perhaps the ultimate sign of respect.
SEGMENT FIVE (EIGHT MINUTES):
Tumblr media
Trios Kingdom 2023 Qualifying Match folkstyle (Shaw Mason, Tim Bosby, and Hunter Holdcraft) vs. The Practice (Dr. Redacted, Dr. Cornwallis, and Dr. Daniel C. Rockingham) folkstyle defeated The Practice via submission with the ankle lock from Mason on Rockingham. (6:55)
SEGMENT SIX (TWO MINUTES):
- Sudu Upadhyay signed off for the week with a quick preview of The Risky Raffle, next week's episode, and thanked the sponsor Meg 2: The Trench in theaters tonight from visionary director Ben Wheatley. Throughout this Zbyszko could be heard talking to the production truck on his headset asking for them to pull the footage of Bryan Keith talking to Kylie Paige.
Next Week On The Great Pro-Wrestling Adventure Hour The Trench Trial Series continues. Brogan Finlay vs. Shaw Mason Trios Kingdom 2023 Qualifying Match: Los Magnificos (Adrenalina, Explosivo, and Fantastico) vs. The Air Show (Jah'Zel, Razerwyng, and Mach10)

January 1911. South Pittston, Pennsylvania. "A view of the Pennsylvania Breaker. 'Breaker boys' remove rocks and other debris from the coal by hand as it passes beneath them. The dust is so dense at times as to obscure the view and penetrates the utmost recesses of the boys' lungs." Photo by Lewis Wickes Hine.
From the 1906 book The Bitter Cry of the Children by labor reformer John Spargo:
Work in the coal breakers is exceedingly hard and dangerous. Crouched over the chutes, the boys sit hour after hour, picking out the pieces of slate and other refuse from the coal as it rushes past to the washers. From the cramped position they have to assume, most of them become more or less deformed and bent-backed like old men. When a boy has been working for some time and begins to get round-shouldered, his fellows say that “He’s got his boy to carry round wherever he goes.”
The coal is hard, and accidents to the hands, such as cut, broken, or crushed fingers, are common among the boys. Sometimes there is a worse accident: a terrified shriek is heard, and a boy is mangled and torn in the machinery, or disappears in the chute to be picked out later smothered and dead. Clouds of dust fill the breakers and are inhaled by the boys, laying the foundations for asthma and miners’ consumption.
I once stood in a breaker for half an hour and tried to do the work a 12-year-old boy was doing day after day, for 10 hours at a stretch, for 60 cents a day. The gloom of the breaker appalled me. Outside the sun shone brightly, the air was pellucid, and the birds sang in chorus with the trees and the rivers. Within the breaker there was blackness, clouds of deadly dust enfolded everything, the harsh, grinding roar of the machinery and the ceaseless rushing of coal through the chutes filled the ears. I tried to pick out the pieces of slate from the hurrying stream of coal, often missing them; my hands were bruised and cut in a few minutes; I was covered from head to foot with coal dust, and for many hours afterwards I was expectorating some of the small particles of anthracite I had swallowed.
I could not do that work and live, but there were boys of 10 and 12 years of age doing it for 50 and 60 cents a day. Some of them had never been inside of a school; few of them could read a child’s primer. True, some of them attended the night schools, but after working 10 hours in the breaker the educational results from attending school were practically nil. “We goes fer a good time, an’ we keeps de guys wot’s dere hoppin’ all de time,” said little Owen Jones, whose work I had been trying to do.
From the breakers the boys graduate to the mine depths, where they become door tenders, switch boys, or mule drivers. Here, far below the surface, work is still more dangerous. At 14 or 15 the boys assume the same risks as the men, and are surrounded by the same perils. Nor is it in Pennsylvania only that these conditions exist. In the bituminous mines of West Virginia, boys of 9 or 10 are frequently employed. I met one little fellow 10 years old in Mount Carbon, West Virginia, last year, who was employed as a “trap boy.” Think of what it means to be a trap boy at 10 years of age. It means to sit alone in a dark mine passage hour after hour, with no human soul near; to see no living creature except the mules as they pass with their loads, or a rat or two seeking to share one’s meal; to stand in water or mud that covers the ankles, chilled to the marrow by the cold draughts that rush in when you open the trap door for the mules to pass through; to work for 14 hours — waiting — opening and shutting a door — then waiting again for 60 cents; to reach the surface when all is wrapped in the mantle of night, and to fall to the earth exhausted and have to be carried away to the nearest “shack” to be revived before it is possible to walk to the farther shack called “home.”
Boys 12 years of age may be legally employed in the mines of West Virginia, by day or by night, and for as many hours as the employers care to make them toil or their bodies will stand the strain. Where the disregard of child life is such that this may be done openly and with legal sanction, it is easy to believe what miners have again and again told me — that there are hundreds of little boys of 9 and 10 years of age employed in the coal mines of this state.

Smurl Family Haunting
This infamous haunting went on for over a decade, according to the Smurl family of Pittston, Pennsylvania. In 1974, Jack and Janet Smurl began claiming their home on Chase Street in West Pittston was home to some sort of supernatural, violent force. They claimed to hear loud noises, see levitating furniture, and violent incidents where their daughter was pushed down the stairs and their dog was thrown into a wall. Starting with Janet and then later Jack, the couple began to experience routine sexual assault at night by an unseen force.
When the Warrens were eventually called in in 1986, they attempted to exorcise the demon from the house by playing religious music and engaging in prayer. However, this seemed to only agitate the creature which left them threatening messages. Besides the Warrens, other investigators and local psychologists investigated the incidents in hopes of finding a cure or cause. Unable to rid themselves of the demonic forces infesting their home, the Smurl’s moved out, leaving the evil presences behind.

Mary Senese
Tumblr media
Mary Senese passed away peacefully at her home in Kingston, PA on Sunday, July 9, 2023, after a long illness. She was 85 years old.
Mary was born to the late Marion Collins and Arthur Schultz in Noxen, PA in 1937. Her fiery red hair earned her the affectionate nickname “Red” among her siblings Joan, Arthur, Daniel, Ellen, and John. It was a fitting emblem for her exuberant personality and her zest for life.
Mary began her working life as a teen behind the counter at Percy Brown’s, an iconic 1950’s Wilkes-Barre market and cafeteria. After graduating from St. Leo’s High School and Wilkes-Barre Business College, she met the love of her life, Fred Senese, a U. S. Navy damage controlman on the crew of the U. S. S. Wisconsin. They were married at St. Leo’s Church in Ashley, PA in January 1958.
They had a long and remarkably happy marriage, raising seven children, managing Fred’s carpentry business, and cheerfully weathering many obstacles together over the next 33 years.
After Fred’s untimely death in 1991, Mary earned an associate degree in business data pocessing technology from Luzerne County Community College and re-entered the workforce. She worked at Offset Paperback Manufacturing for many years and then joined the IT department of Western and Southern Life Insurance. She retired in 2008 and lived quietly for the rest of her life in Kingston, PA.
Mary will be profoundly missed by her surviving children: Fred Senese, of Frostburg, MD; Jeffrey Senese and his wife Alicia, of Philadelphia, PA; Glenn Senese and his wife Debbie, of Pittston, PA; Maryellen Takacs of Kingston, PA; Liza Roper and her husband Ben, of Kingston, PA; and Leah Warenda and her husband Frank of West Wyoming, PA.  She deeply missed her son Christopher, who preceded her in death in 1989.
Mary loved her grandchildren. She often invited them to sleepovers at her house, where she’d make funnel cakes and other treats with them. Her absence will be keenly felt by her surviving grandchildren, Ryan Senese, Brandon Senese, Shawn Senese, Chris Takacs, Dana Takacs, Michael Senese, Mia Senese, Kai Senese, Keiran Senese, Lauren Senese, Daniel Senese, Erin Senese, Rachel Senese, Frankie Warenda, Charlie Warenda and Joey Warenda.
Mary is survived by her dear sister Joan Gallagher, and her husband Martin, and their children Molly, Megan, Monica, and Martin Jr. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dalia, and her sons Lenny and Albert, and the children of her late brother Daniel: Marilyn, Laura, Joanne, Daniel Joe, and Paul.. She was preceded in death by her sister Ellen and her brother Arthur.
Mary’s final services will begin with a viewing on Friday July 14 at 4 PM to 7 PM at Hugh B. Hughes Funeral Home in Forty Fort, PA. Formal services at the funeral home will begin at 9:30 AM on Saturday, July 15.
Mary’s funeral mass will be held on Saturday at 10:15 AM on July 15 at St. Ignatius Church in Kingston, PA, the church she attended for the last 40 years. The mass will be followed by a procession to the gravesite at St. Ignatius Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Heart Association at https://www.heart.org/en/get-involved/ways-to-give.
Mary never did anything that she didn’t want to do. Her honesty and her deeply rooted sense of right and wrong were legendary. If she had a problem with you, she would let you know about it. In the twilight of her life, when grieving the passing of friends and family, Mary would sometimes say, “Well. They had a life.”  She said this quietly and matter-of-factly, not as a dismissal but as an admiration of a life well-lived, a life beloved.
Mary had a life. And Mary was beloved.
