Lots has happened since we saw our gang last: Bain is off on his adventures, Sigrid has graduated from her studies, Tilda is a full-fledged teenager and, to her fathers’ apprehension, an absolute beauty. But there is a new crop of grandchildren to delight in, as the Kingdoms of the North continue to enjoy this time of peace. Gondor has been exchanging members of their army with Dale for a few years, now and it has gone well.
However...
This year’s batch of soldiers includes a not-so-pleasant blast from the past. Can the Kings and poor Commander Feren handle it?

Part II of “Two Thrones Series,” following “What Makes a King.”
(It's the first winter after the Battle of Five Armies, and Bard and the rest of the Men of Dale are working hard to build as much as they can, with the help of the Elves and the Dwarves. Thranduil is looking after the women and children of with Galion's and Hilda's help.
Everyone is busy, but it doesn't stop them from wishing they were all together again... When will Spring finally come?)
The Woodland Realm, 2nd of January, 2942, T.A.
That first night after Bard left, Thranduil was asleep in his chambers, when he felt something shake his arm. He opened his eyes and blinked several times, only to see in the glow of the fireplace, a very sad little girl, clutching her doll and stuffed elk, sniffling.
The Elvenking sat up, prepared for this. He had made sure to wear modest night clothes, in case he had nighttime visitors.
“Tilda? What is it, Tithen Pen? Are you hurt, or ill?
She screwed her face up and started crying in earnest, so he quickly gathered her into his long arms. “Tell me what is the matter, and I shall try to make it better.”
Tilda hid her face in Thranduil’s neck. “I want m-my Da!”
He rubbed her back. “I know, Hênig, I miss him as well. Did you have a bad dream?”
“No. I w-woke up, and then I remembered Da w-went away!” She began to cry again, as her arms tightened around neck. “I want him to come back!”
“I am sorry you feel so sad. We must try to be brave, and rely on each other, while your Da works to get Dale ready for your people. When you return, it will look much better, will it not?" He pulled her away from his shoulder, and looked into her face, and stroked her hair. “But I think that is small comfort for a little girl, who has never been away from her Da.” He hugged her again, and continued to rub her back soothingly, until she had begun to settle down.
“Did you know, when Legolas was small, and he had bad dreams, he would often sleep with my wife and me? Would it make you feel better if you stayed with me, tonight?”
Tilda, still hiccupping, said, “Yes, p-please. I don’t want to be b-by myself, and S-Sigrid is asleep.”
“Do you need to visit the necessary, before you go back to sleep?”
“Could you come with me? Things look scary here in the dark.” She started to cry again.
“Shh… Shh…” he rubbed her back. “I understand, Tithen Pen. This is a new place, and shadows can seem frightening at night until you get used to them,” he told her as he stood up with her in his arms. “Here, let me put Charlotte and Daisy down, and they can wait for us, all right?” She nodded, as she handed him the toys, and then he carried her to the necessary. “We could leave a lamp burning in your common room at night. Would that help?”
She nodded, still hiccupping.
He lit the lamp for her in their necessary room, then waited outside for her take to care of business, before he carried her back to his chambers and settled her in Bard’s side of the bed. He tucked an extra quilt around her, then went around to the other side and crawled in, sitting against the headboard. Still sniffling, she leaned against him, clutching her toys tight.
“I just miss my Da.” She whispered, sadly.
Thranduil stroked her head. “I understand how you feel, Tilda, I miss him, too. Perhaps we can help each other, when we are sad. I can make you feel better when you miss him too much, and when I feel lonely, you can help me. What do you think about that?”
“How can I help you?” Tilda asked.
“Well, if I tell you when I am sad, you can give me a hug, or draw me a picture, or you could tell me a story.”
“Me, tell you a story?”
“Certainly. You have known your Da longer than I have, and you could tell me stories about when you lived in Laketown, with your brother and your sister. I would like that very much.”
“Maybe you could tell me stories of when Legolas and Tauriel were little.” Tilda offered. “Or when you were little with your Mam and Da.”
“I could do that. Shall I tell you of the time, when I was small, and my friend Feren and I tried to ride my father's warhorse?”
“You mean, Feren who works with you and Da? You knew him when you were little?”
“Oh, yes! Feren is my oldest friend. That is why he helped your Da and me get married. Feren’s father worked for my father, King Oropher.”
Tilda thought about this. “So, he must be old, too. But not as old as Auntie Hil.”
The Elvenking laughed. “I am afraid he is much, much older than your Auntie Hil. And when we were young, we got into quite a bit of trouble together.”
“You did? Like ride your Da’s horse when you weren’t supposed to?”
“Indeed. We had our own, smaller horses, but we liked to pretend we were fierce warriors, and we often wondered what it was like to ride those enormous horses into battle. Those beasts are especially strong, and trained to protect our fathers in combat.”
“Like your Elk did? I heard he was mean.”
“Bara-Maethor was only mean to those who wanted to hurt me. My father’s horse was the same way. He could be scary to those who want to harm us, but he was kind and gentle to me, when I would feed him an apple or a carrot."
“Was he smart?”
Thranduil nodded. “He was very smart. Galvorn did not tolerate foolish young Elflings who went sneaking around behind their parents’ back. That day, we rode him because I did not want to practice my sword work, and even worse," Thranduil made a face. "I told a lie."
"You lied? Da and Auntie Hil call it 'fibbing,' and that's bad."
"'Fibbing' is a good word, is it not? And, yes, it is a very bad thing to do. It got me into a lot of trouble that day. Shall I tell you that story?”
The little girl nodded.
“Close your eyes and settle back, and I will begin.”
She did, so, he did.
~o0o~
It was late summer, and Thranduil and Feren had just finished in the practice yard with their wooden swords. The Prince was furious. Feren had beaten him! Again!
He kicked open the gate, and stomped out of the practice arena.
“Thranduil! What is the matter with you?”
He whipped around toward the other Elfling. “YOU are NOT supposed to beat me!”
“I will BEAT you at anything I want!" said an outraged Feren, who stuck his finger in Thranduil's face. "YOU cannot tell ME what to do!”
This incensed the young Prince. “I can so! My father is the King and you will do everything I say!”
“I will not, and you cannot make me! Just because you are lousy with swords, does not mean you can take it out on me!”
“I am NOT bad with swords!”
Feren laughed. “Then why I did I win? Three times! Princes are not supposed to be sore losers. If you would practice like you are supposed to, I would not beat you! Three times! But you do not, so I did! Three times! Ha Ha!”
Thranduil couldn't stand the idea of Feren making fun of him, so he had to think of something. “Well... I did not practice because…" A thought popped into his head, and was out of his mouth before he knew it. "I was busy riding Galvorn!”
“You were not! You are lying!”
The blonde Elfling drew himself up to his fullest height, stuck his nose in the air, and said, “I was, too! It is not my fault that your Ada will not let you ride his horse. But I can ride Galvorn anytime I want!”
Feren narrowed his eyes, and crossed his arms. “Prove it.”
Thranduil was not expecting that. “What?”
“You heard me. If you can ride the King’s warhorse, I want to see you do it."
“I... cannot ride him right now, because he is out grazing.”
“So, go get him. He likes you when you bring him apples. Let me see you ride him. Otherwise,” Feren grinned evilly, “I will ask your father about it!"
Gulping, Thranduil said, “Fine! I will! But only if you ride him, too! Or are you scared?”
The prince was hoping Feren would be frightened, so they could just forget the whole thing.
No such luck.
Feren stomped towards the barns. “I am not afraid, you are! Let us go.”
They made their way into the barn and, as it turned out, Galvorn was not in the paddock as Thranduil had claimed; he was in his stall. They managed to get a saddle and bridle on him, while the great horse waited patiently, biding his time. The horse’s calmness and cooperation eased the Elflings' trepidation. Feeling emboldened by their success so far, they began to laugh together and look forward to their big adventure. They were going to be true warriors!
They led him into the paddock and stopped by the fence, so they could use it to leap into the saddle, with Thranduil in front. Thranduil took the reins, and they were off! They rode around the paddock a few times, feeling bolder with each step. Then they took him to the center, so they could pretend to wave their swords and fight off the terrible Orcs.
But when Thranduil rode him over to the gate and unlatched it, Galvorn had had enough of this foolishness, and saw his chance. He reared up, tossing the boys onto the ground. They landed hard on their behinds, bewildered, then got up and started to brush themselves off. But, the horse wasn’t finished teaching them a lesson. He neighed, then turned and backed up toward them.
Thranduil and Feren ran for their lives, but Galvorn managed to get them each in the buttocks several times, and the last kick sent Thranduil flying and screaming through the air, only to land, face-first, in to a pile of manure.
~o0o~
At this last part of the story, Tilda began to giggle, and so did Thranduil.
“What happened then?” she asked.
“The horse went through the open gate, and ran to the barracks where our Adars were.”
“I’ll be they were mad.”
“Well, they were not pleased." he smiled. "We had to stand at attention while our Adars shouted at us. To make matters worse, I had to take a bath, which I did not like to do.”
Tilda giggled again. “Your bottom must have really hurt."
“Oh, it did!" Thranduil laughed. My Naneth took us to the Healer, to make sure we were all right. I was bruised all over my bottom and so was Feren, but our Adars would not allow the Healers to help. They said the pain would teach us a lesson.”
“Did it?”
“Yes. We could not sit down for days. In addition, Feren and I had to polish every single piece of tack in that barn, and clean out the all horse stalls for a month.”
"Did you ever do it again?"
"Would you have?" He smiled down at her.
Tilda shook her head, then yawned.
He kissed her on her hair and asked, “Do you feel better now, Tithen Pen?”
"Mmm-hmm." She yawned again, and snuggled down. “Good night, Thrandool.”
He sat for a long time and watched her sleep, smiling, before he finally drifted off himself.

City of Dale, 20th of July, 2942 T.A.
“BARD!”
Everyone rushed to the King of Dale, who was laid out on the floor.
Thranduil helped him sit up. “Are you well?” he asked, as Daeron checked his jaw.
“Never mind me; I’m fine.” Bard held his jaw as he addressed Daeron and Turamarth. “You two need to go find him!”
He was surprised when the Guards froze, looked at each other, and then at Thranduil.
“You heard me; that’s an order!” Bard was becoming angry. “What the f—“
“Bard,” Thranduil said, quietly, as he helped Bard stand, “they are not disobeying your order. They cannot abandon their post; it is a very serious offense in my Kingdom.”
“Bullshit! That’s just some stupid technicality!” He gave his husband a look that would brook no argument. “I refuse to pretend to be helpless, when you know damned well we’re not! This is a child we’re talking about!” He turned to the three Guards.
“We’ll stay here, and Ruvyn will guard in your stead. You know I’m a capable fighter, and Thranduil’s one of the fiercest warriors alive today. Now, get your arses out there, find Bowen, and do whatever is necessary to calm him down.”
“Where do you want us to take him when we find him, My Lord?”
“What do you mean ‘where?’” Anna was frightened. “He’s just a child, My Lord! Surely you can see how upset he is!” She started to cry, and her husband put his arm around her.
“She’s right, My Lord. That boy has taken too much on his shoulders. He hardly sleeps or eats, and all that has taken its toll. And now, he probably thinks he’s going to punished.” Daffyd sighed. “Bowen is not well. He needs a break from all this, or we may lose him altogether. Please, give the boy whatever he needs. We’ll see to his brother and sister.”
Bard nodded his agreement. “We’re going help him, not punish him,” he promised the weeping woman. “This incident is under Seal, no one will discuss it with anyone but those in this room. I want you to keep Ellyn from getting upset, until we know exactly what’s going on. Anna, go back and tell her we’re seeing to him; he just needs a little time. Daffyd, I want you to go home, in case he goes there.”
The King of Dale addressed the two Guards. “It’s chilly out there from the rains, and the boy could get sick, but I’m afraid if Bowen sees a lot of strangers in uniform, he’ll go further into hiding. I’ll give you two hours to find the boy on your own, then I’ll have to sound the bells and send every able-bodied person out to join the search.”
Thranduil nodded his agreement. “When you find him, we will trust your judgement as to what to do with him. Lord Bard and I will visit Ellyn for a few minutes, then go back to the Castle to await word.”
“Yes, My Lord.”
Another flash of lightning and clap of thunder filled the air. “Leave your armor and swords here; the last thing we need is for one of you to get struck by lightning.” Bard ordered. “We’ll get it back to you.”
Daeron and Turamarth saluted, and out the door they went.
Thranduil put his hand on Bard’s arm. “Are you well?”
“I’ll be fine,” though Bard was rubbing and working his jaw. “If it hurts later, you can take a look.”
“I’m so sorry, My Lord!” Anna came over to beg forgiveness.
“Don’t worry about that. All I care about is finding him, so we can make sure he doesn’t get hurt.” He looked at the older couple. “Now remember don’t tell his Mam: we’ll just say he wants to calm down a little. Daffyd? Get Powell out of this weather. Tell him to leave the carriage out there and wait in here, until we’re ready to leave. Take your carriage to the Castle and fetch Ivran, then go home and see if the boy goes there.”
“Right away, My Lord.” When the man opened the door, they all saw another flash of lightning, followed by a loud clap of thunder. The rain was now a downpour.
“Oh, the poor boy…” Anna clutched her chest. “What if –“
Thranduil stepped over. “Come Mistress. Do not let your mind go to dark places, until you must. I am sure Ellyn is worried, so we will put on a brave face and help her.” He put her hand in the crook of his arm. “I have faith in my Guards, as does King Bard. Whatever is amiss, we will make sure young Bowen comes to no harm.”
The Elvenking led the way back to the patient’s room, to find Elénaril sitting on the bed, holding Owena, with Maddox snuggled against his mother.
Thranduil went over and kissed her hand. “How do you feel, Mistress Ellyn? Are you in pain?”
“No, thank the Stars. They’ve been taking good care of me.”
“My Mam’s really, really sick.” Mad looked up at Thranduil, with sad eyes that pierced the Elvenking’s heart. “But she says Daffyd and Anna will take care of us.”
Thranduil stroked the boy’s head. “I am sorry she is sick, child. Your Mam must love you a great deal to make sure you will be looked after.”
Elénaril got up with the baby, and held her hand out. “Maddox, would you like some juice? I think I know where we can find some cookies to go with it.”
The boy looked up at his Mam, who smiled. “Go on, lovey. I’ll just talk to Lord Bard and Lord Thranduil for a few minutes.”
“Do you want me to bring you one, Mam?”
“I’d love that.”
After they left, Bard came over. “Ellyn, I’m so sorry. I really am.”
“Please, My Lord. I don’t have time to lament my bad luck. I need to spend what I have left making sure my children are all right.” She gave him a sad smile.
“Can I do anything?”
“Yes, if you would. I can’t…” she held up her hands. “They’re so weak now, but I want to write letters to my children. I want them to know I’ll be thinking of them throughout their lives.”
“I will send someone over, to write whatever you dictate.” Bard took both her hands in his. “And I will keep the letters and see that they get them personally.”
“If you would, My Lord. Anna will have so much to do and I don’t want to burden her –“
“Nonsense, Ellyn!” Anna protested. “‘Tis no burden, you know that! I’m happy to do it.”
“All the same, I want Lord Bard to keep them and give them out. This way, they know their King is looking after them.”
“I’d be honored, good lady. Would you be willing to allow Princess Sigrid to help with this? She is eager to be of use, and her handwriting and spelling are good.”
“That would be nice.” Ellyn looked out in the Hall. “Where’s Bowen? Has he settled down?”
Bard smiled and rubbed her hands. “He’s taking it hard, but we’ll make sure he’s all right.”
“I know he’s angry and upset,” Ellyn’s eyes filled with tears. “It’s all been so hard on him; too hard. He’s such a good boy…”
“I know he is, Ellyn.” Bard smiled. “I have some people looking out for him, so please, don’t worry.”
As Thranduil watched his husband reassure this sick woman, with such compassion and consideration, he thought about the conversation he had with Bard earlier. This was what he loved so much about his Bowman: his genuine, easy manner that can calm and soothe the turmoil within him, within anyone.
In this moment, he felt honored to be Consort to the King of Dale.

I love and appreciate all fanfic writers, and try hard to always leave a comment! [wenderful52 on AO3]. Hats off and bunches of roses to: @creepyscientist for furnishing my little story with such great illustrations! Love you big bunches, love! @dailythranduilproject, @eldritchmage, @floranocturna, @flurgburgler, @tigereyesf, @ofplanet-earth, @neurotoxia @nuredhel, @magical-lee, (WHO REALLY SHOULD WRITE MORE! 😬), @johnnysmitten, @the-mighty-bow, and lots more that I love! Thank you for shar8ng your talent, your blood, sweat and tears, to entertain us!!
August 21st is Fanfic Writer’s Appreciation Day 💕
Let’s be honest - we all forget to leave a comment sometimes. We don’t always go out of our way to click the “come talk to me on tumblr link on AO3 to scream about the fic in the author’s inbox. On August 21st I encourage you to take a moment and show fanfic writers that you appreciate them!
How can you do it?
leave a comment and kudos on every fic you finish reading. Doesn’t matter how short. Doesn’t matter if you’re just repeating what other people have already said. Just be kind! Keysmashing, Caps Lock, and live commenting appreciated! (Bonus points if you leave a comment on every chapter)
ideas for what to put in a comment: one | two
floaty review box for ao3 (super useful for commenting as you read + it has a ‘review tips’ button if you feel stuck)
reblog ficlets, drabbles, fics, fic rec posts, etc. Put a nice comment in the tags. Remember that likes, while appreciated, don’t give the writer any exposure, meaning the posts don’t reach more people
go to your local fanfic writer’s inbox and talk to them about their fic of your choice. Let them know how long ago you’ve read it and what story point/sentence/scene still makes you smile when you think about it
send thank you messages to fic writers. In a world where you have to pay for almost everything, they’re supplying you with countless hours of free entertainment. It can get quite lonely without getting messages acknowledging the hours they spend writing stories - let them know their time and effort is appreciated
make fic rec posts and @ the authors whose fics you’re recommending! (believe me, fic writers love to see their stories in these posts)
create something inspired by a fic! You can draw fanart, make a moodboard or aesthetic post, or even write a song for the fic you love. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro doesn’t matter - the thought alone is what counts more than anything <3
buy the writer a coffee if they have a ko-fi page and you have some change lying around c: Caffeine keeps most fic writers awake when they struggle with a particularly slow draft or a difficult scene. More coffee, more content.
These are only some ideas out of the sea of possible ways to appreciate fanfic writers. On August 21st show the writers in your fandom(s) some love <3

Chapter 1: The wheels on the bus go round and round...
“Ethel! Ethel! We’re over here!” Martha frantically waved to her friend. “Where is your Red Hat?”
“The dog chewed it,” the petite, white haired lady answered, as she rushed over. “Nice shirt.”
Martha looked down at her reindeer sweatshirt. “It was a present from my grandson. Didn’t Sadie ride with you?”
“No. She said she’d be with the rest of the folks from the rest home.”
“How many are coming?”
“Oh, a half-dozen or so. How did you find out about this shopping trip anyway?”
“It was on the bulletin board down at the Piggly-Wiggly for a group called AO3—”
“What kind of group is that?” Ethel quirked a suspicious eyebrow above her glasses. “Please say we’re not headed to some sort of political rally, or I’m outta here.”
“No, thank God.” Martha said. “They’re some sort of literary group.”
“A Book Club?”
“I think so.”
“Why would a bunch of bookworms want to go to a shopping mall?”
“Who knows? Who cares? There’s a big sale in a place called Dale. This lady, Wendy-something - I think she’s a travel agent – arranged it for her friends at AO3, and said there was plenty of room on the bus. You know me,” she smiled, “I’ll never turn down a good bargain.”
“I do know you,” Ethel rolled her eyes. “Oh, look, here they are!”
A blue van with “Shady Pines” in white letters pulled into the parking lot, and out came Sadie, along with her husband Saul who was wearing a Santa cap and a big grin. Three other ladies disembarked: Agnes, Sophia and Maude, and Luther, who carried Maude’s purse, and helped her out of the van with her cane.
“For Chrissake, Saul,” Sadie scolded, “take off that stupid hat; we're Jewish!
“So? I like to keep ‘em guessing,” he laughed, as he handed over her purse.
“I still don’t understand why you and Luther wanted to come.”
“You’ll need a pack mule, to haul all your goodies home,” he tipped his red and white hat to reveal a black yarmulke underneath. “At your service, madam.”
“Oh, horse-hockey,” she rolled her eyes, “I’ll bet you two are looking for a card game to hustle.”
“That, too,” he shrugged happily and clasped his hands eagerly. “Are we all ready?”
They turned and took in the sight of the sleek black and gold coach.
Someone had pasted a huge banner on the side that said “Middle Earth or Bust! TTCon 2019!!”
“What’s Middle Earth?” Agnes asked. “I thought we were going to Dale,”
“It’s probably just the name of the Mall,” Martha said with confidence. “It will be fun! Loosen up!”
“I can’t loosen up,” Maude said. “I just had a hip replacement.”
