In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in consumer behavior towards adopting healthier lifestyles. Factors such as rising awareness about the importance of preventive healthcare, growing concerns over chronic diseases, and an aging population have all contributed to this trend. As individuals strive to maintain optimal health and vitality, they are turning to wellness supplements as a convenient and effective way to bridge nutritional gaps and support their overall well-being.
Changing Dietary Habits and Nutritional Deficiencies
One of the key drivers shaping the wellness supplements market is the changing dietary habits of consumers. Busy schedules, increased urbanization, and the proliferation of processed foods have led to deficiencies in essential nutrients for many individuals. As a result, there is a growing demand for supplements that provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other bioactive compounds to support health and vitality.
Moreover, the rise of specialty diets, such as vegetarianism, veganism, and gluten-free diets, has also contributed to the demand for supplements that address specific nutritional needs. For instance, vegetarians and vegans may require supplements to ensure adequate intake of nutrients like vitamin B12, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids that are predominantly found in animal-derived foods.
Beauty-from-Within and Anti-Aging Trends
Changing perceptions of beauty and aging are also influencing the market dynamics. With the rise of social media and the emphasis on youthfulness, there is a growing interest in beauty-from-within products that promote radiant skin, strong hair, and healthy nails. Collagen supplements, for example, have gained popularity for their purported benefits in promoting skin elasticity and reducing the signs of aging.
Furthermore, consumers are increasingly seeking holistic approaches to skincare and anti-aging, recognizing the integral role that nutrition plays in maintaining youthful-looking skin and overall vitality. This has led to the incorporation of beauty-boosting ingredients like collagen peptides, hyaluronic acid, and antioxidants into wellness supplements, catering to the growing demand for natural and efficacious anti-aging solutions.
Personalized Nutrition and Customized Supplements
The wellness supplements market is witnessing a shift towards personalized nutrition as consumers seek tailored solutions that address their specific health goals and concerns. Generic, one-size-fits-all supplements are no longer sufficient to meet the diverse needs of today's health-conscious consumers. Instead, there is a growing demand for customized supplement formulations based on factors such as age, gender, lifestyle, and genetic predispositions.
Companies are leveraging advancements in technology, such as DNA testing, microbiome analysis, and artificial intelligence, to develop personalized supplement regimens that are tailored to individual needs. By analyzing genetic markers, biomarkers, and lifestyle factors, personalized nutrition companies can recommend targeted supplements that optimize health outcomes and support personalized wellness goals.
Challenges and Regulatory Considerations
Despite the promising growth prospects, the wellness supplements market is not without its challenges. Regulatory scrutiny, safety concerns, and skepticism about the efficacy of certain supplements remain significant barriers to growth. The regulatory landscape governing dietary supplements varies widely across different regions, leading to inconsistencies in labeling requirements, ingredient standards, and marketing claims.
Moreover, the proliferation of adulterated and counterfeit products poses risks to consumer safety and undermines trust in the industry. Instances of mislabeling, contamination, and fraudulent claims have eroded consumer confidence in the quality and integrity of wellness supplements. As such, industry stakeholders must prioritize quality control, transparency, and evidence-based marketing to build consumer trust and credibility.
Opportunities for Innovation and Expansion
In conclusion, the wellness supplements market is poised for significant growth, driven by changing lifestyles and increasing awareness of the importance of health and well-being. As consumers continue to prioritize preventive healthcare and personalized nutrition, there are abundant opportunities for innovation and expansion within the industry.
By understanding and adapting to the evolving needs and preferences of consumers, companies can position themselves for success in this dynamic and thriving market. Investing in research and development, leveraging emerging technologies, and embracing transparent and ethical business practices will be key to capitalizing on the growing demand for wellness supplements and driving sustainable growth in the years to come.
Expansion into Emerging Markets: With rising disposable incomes and growing health consciousness in emerging markets such as Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and Africa, there is immense potential for companies to expand their footprint and tap into new consumer demographics.
Diversification of Product Offerings: Beyond traditional vitamins and minerals, there is a growing demand for specialized supplements targeting specific health concerns such as gut health, cognitive function, and stress management. Companies can capitalize on this trend by diversifying their product portfolios and offering innovative formulations that address niche market segments.
Partnerships and Collaborations: Collaboration with healthcare professionals, nutritionists, and wellness experts can lend credibility to brands and enhance consumer trust. Strategic partnerships with retailers, e-commerce platforms, and health clinics can also provide access to new distribution channels and expand market reach.
Investment in Brand Building and Marketing: In an increasingly crowded marketplace, building a strong brand identity and communicating unique value propositions is essential for standing out from competitors. Investment in targeted marketing campaigns, influencer partnerships, and social media engagement can help brands connect with consumers and drive brand loyalty.
Emphasis on Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility: As consumers become more environmentally conscious, there is a growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly products. Companies can differentiate themselves by adopting sustainable sourcing practices, reducing carbon footprint, and supporting ethical supply chains.
Inquire before buying, here: https://www.nextmsc.com/wellness-supplements-market/inquire-before-buying
Education and Consumer Empowerment: Providing transparent information about ingredients, manufacturing processes, and product efficacy is crucial for building consumer trust and loyalty. Companies can invest in educational initiatives, online resources, and customer support services to empower consumers to make informed choices about their health and wellness.
Adoption of Digital Health Solutions: The integration of digital health technologies such as wearable devices, mobile apps, and telehealth platforms presents opportunities for companies to enhance consumer engagement and personalize wellness experiences. By leveraging data analytics and AI-driven insights, companies can tailor product recommendations and services to meet individual health goals and preferences.
Conclusion
The wellness supplements market is at a pivotal juncture, poised for exponential growth in the coming years. With changing lifestyles driving the demand for preventive healthcare and personalized nutrition, there has never been a more opportune time for companies to innovate and expand their offerings in this burgeoning industry. By staying abreast of consumer trends, addressing regulatory challenges, and prioritizing quality and transparency, businesses can carve out a lucrative niche in the wellness supplements market and contribute to the well-being of millions worldwide.

"Why has the bar for supplemental sets gotten higher? Is it universes beyond?Universes Beyond and Modern Horizons are the biggest two causes." That really sucks, a lot of us really looked forward to the summer supplemental sets because of how fun they were, 2 headed giant draft and conspiracy immediately come to mind.
The bar gets raised because new products do well. More players play them, more players buy them, and more players rank them higher in market research. It’s not some diabolical plot. It’s the game evolving towards what the players are most enjoying.

I'm your average joe who works an average desk job and at 45 I have nothing great going for me. Sometimes I just wish I could do it over again. Maybe take up a diffrent major in college, something that would set me up for a more adventurous life. Can you help me achieve this?
Okay, who wants to be average? And who wouldn't want to know what their life would have been like if they had made a different decision at some point? I mean, your decisions weren't actually bad. Bank apprenticeship, business studies, going to the gym twice a week… You have a house in the suburbs, a cool car. It could have been worse! But also better. We can manage that! Monday, 12:00 noon, let's get started!
When you finish work in the evening, you're still full of energy. Even though you worked until 19:00 today. It's paying off that you started making the gym your home seven months ago. When you arrive at the gym at 8 p.m., Steve greets you at reception with a fist bump. Everyone here greets you. Some of them are good friends of yours. The rest at least know you by sight. No wonder, you're here every day. In the morning before work. In the evening after work. And the effort pays off. From a very well-built man with the typical rolls of flab, you have developed into an athlete. A machine. Not one of the big boys. But close. You call it a day at 22:00. You need seven hours' sleep, you want to be back here at 07:00. One last critical look in the mirror. Not bad for a man in his mid-40s…
Get up, gym, office… You work like clockwork. You're good at your job. The development of your body has boosted your career. Today you have another lunch date with a division manager. He asks you if it's time to take the next step in your career. It's been two years since you moved to the "Digital Research and Development" division. That was also the initial spark for your physical transformation. As an accounting employee, you had previously become a lazy and saturated couch potato… You smile and, as if by chance, flex your huge biceps. You know that makes him hot. And the prospect of a blowjob after lunch is tempting. Of course, he immediately notices that your cock is getting hard… You have his hand in your crotch for the rest of lunch.
When you arrive at the gym at 7pm on Wednesday, you first have to go through your post. As the largest shareholder, you are only the chairman of the supervisory board. But many people confuse that with managing director. Idiots who are just stealing your precious time on the weights. Since you introduced the "Meathead Gym" brand and turned your old gym into the flagship of the new brand, you feel even more at home here. No classes, no machines, no women. Just honest, hard bodybuilding. Dress code is at least off-the-shoulder. In fact, shirtless is preferred. It goes without saying that you don't wear a tank top either.
You're the first one in the gym on Friday morning. Good thing you have the keys. You look around. Your empire. It was a big step to leave your good job almost eight years ago and start working at the fitness start-up. For hardcore bodybuilders, you are now the market leader as a fitness studio, but also in nutritional supplements and gym clothing. Steve arrives at 05:30. He has the early shift at reception. You greet him with a fist bump. Good man. A little weak in the chest. At least compared to you… But he'll get there!
Tumblr media
You visit a school friend at the weekend. His son is a handsome stud. He could turn into a real gym hunk. He asks if he can take a selfie with you. Sure, I'd love to, you say. He asks you if you can give him any tips on what he should do now. He's finishing high school now. You ask him what position he plays football. He grins and says that he prefers to spend his time in the gym. You can see that. You tell your school friend to listen away for a moment. And then you tell your son that he shouldn't bother with college and university. You're glad you didn't do that either. You started pumping iron straight away. And then brought your dream to life. Live your dream, you tell him. And that you'd be happy if it could start at your company.

I understand PH's need to prop up his Hero Harry image and get involved with military stuff in the US to stay relevant, because it may be one of the few thing he knows (aside from polo and his pretend expertise on mental health). What I don't understand is how the hell does this Hero Harry make him any money? Does he get paid by IG?
No, but IG pays for all of Harry's expenses when he travels to their events. I suspect BetterUp pays for a lot of Harry's expenses as well.
As with all things in life, "you have to spend money to make money." So Harry, Meghan, WME, Archewell, Invictus Games, etc. buy PR that sells them to other companies who'll hopefully hire them for their projects, sponsorship deals, lectures, galas, dinners. So the more PR the Sussexes buy, the better their chances at getting new marks or new corporate partners for new projects and paydays.
What I suspect is probably happening is that through a whole bunch of marketing research and testing, someone (WME? Harry's own people? Archewell?) discovered that Harry gets the most interest from potential corporate partners/brand deals when they use Hero Harry and Invictus Games for the PR than any other kind of brand association (e.g., ex-royal, Archie's Dad, Brit expat, etc.).
And as for other income sources propping up the Sussexes, I think they have some investments and sponsorships that are turning an ok profit and that's what they live on, supplemented by private money from Charles that probably pays their day-to-day living expenses via a trust of some sort and then whatever they can grift from Invictus Games, BetterUp, Clevr, and Soho House for their travel/vacations.
(I fully believe that the money from their 2020/2021 content deals have already been fully spent. I wouldn't be surprised if that money was gone within six months of landing in their bank accounts because of how spendy Meghan is.)
On the gossip side of things - via Lady C's latest vlog - the Sussexes make money through US tax loopholes that Meghan exploited when they set up Archewell. YMMV.

How to be a Bull Ch 7: Work
Tumblr media
((FINALLY got to this one. Sorry yall.)) (Model is Elton Mota)
A prejudiced view might find it strange to see a Bull at such lofty heights in the corporate ladder. The uninitiated would see their size and assume that they have nothing to offer but eye-candy.
But our market research has shown that a large percentage of bulls actually thrive in high-achieving positions. Advertising, PR, R&D. Skilled professionals from doctors and lawyers to esteemed academics often get bit by the bull bug.
There is a clear set of transferable skills acquired when you spend your non-working hours totally gym obsessed. Discipline, Patience, Self-direction. Being able to work yourself, withstand the strain of constant progressive overload and always come back the next day ready for more.
Couple that with the bull lifestyle being more expensive than one would expect; with tons of protein, supplements and something’s extra. With specially tailored apparel because normal stores can’t contain your bulk any longer. With hyper-exclusive gym memberships and competition fee’s because that unending lust for growth requires constant improvement of facilities and community who shares your addiction.
The end result for the company is a driven, growth obsessed highly skilled worker who excels in handling large, well defined projects well ahead of the deadline because they know their muscle is at stake if they don’t.
*insert abyssal chanting*
Elton is the go-to guy for those big accounts at the Avis Athletics Agency. The look of absolute focus and fire in his eyes is sometimes frightening. Total dedication given to both sides of his life. They synthesize so naturally for him. It's like he puts every muscle and sinew into his work, and lets his work fuel every inch of growth.
The gym at Agency HQ is state of the art, an obvious requirement given our team. But for Elton it basically functions as a secondary office space. On the phone talking with clients while he reps out a new PB on company time. He says his mind works best and is clearest when pumping iron. That pure euphoria of the mind-muscle connection truly boosting his performance through the roof. It’s such a potent addiction that when the gym was closed for maintenance for a month, the CFO offered to let Elton use his private suite just to keep his numbers high.
Company meetings with Elton are likewise a key to his productivity. The tight business attire straining around his form does end up distracting and reducing the overall work done by anyone else in the room, yes. But something about the attention drives our highest earning bull into a frenzy. Like his own personal audience. Intimately aware of how he outsizes every single man in the room. Going through the plan for an acquisition or a partnership deal that’ll PUMP PUMP PUMP the stock prices through the roof. Unconsciously flexing every time he gestures for a prop, veins visible beneath the sheer fabric of his dress shirt. Excitement palpable in the air as sweat trickles down that massive back, the fabric of his slacks starting to tighten even more. The rest of the boardroom doesn’t even need to speak. They know he’s got it.
In one wild 9-5 he gets the project that was slated to take 2 weeks on the CEO’s desk. Without a word he packed up and headed straight to the gym to unleash all that pent up energy. The CEO made a mental note to schedule more board meetings with Elton, and to make sure that his Holiday bonus was more than enough to ensure he came back from vacation 20lbs of pure muscle heavier

also a problem i think marks a lot of 'alternative medicine' in a specific way is the heavy reliance on mechanistic theories of disease and the deriving of treatment protocols from the practitioner's knowledge of physiology / anatomy / organic chemistry. it creates a situation where you go and you look at these people's theories and it's like well sure i can understand the argument you're making and if your premises are all correct and comprehensive, then it does seem like this treatment would work to solve the problem you describe. however it usually turns out the human body is more complicated or variable than a diagram in an anatomy textbook and these people back themselves into corners where they don't want to admit their idea didn't pan out in practice because they often have few and weak institutional links as a result of having marketed themselves as daring, heterodox, and counter-hegemonic, and now their livelihood is staked on what can best be described as "overpromising" and is often more accurately described as "lying".
orthodox medicine does ofc have the same fundamental problem with mechanistic theory failing to produce actual results (something like 1 in 27 drugs that ever gain any clinical trial will be approved for use in humans, and some of those really shouldn't even be, and that figure excludes everything that didn't even make it past the earliest stages of exploration) but there is a marginal degree of protection that is sometimes generated when dealing with pharmacological interventions approved by regulatory agencies (ie, not 'supplements'), plus prestigious medical institutions and practitioner groups tend to be sclerotic in a way not conducive to claims marketing themselves as radical and new, and instead generally favourable to treatment modalities the state likes, such as gaslighting patients and funnelling them into cbt over investigating biomarkers or pathological anatomy. noticeably different though equally insidious issues imo.
anyway i think this dynamic with alternative practices is particularly infuriating in that it drives a lot of people to dedicate significant amounts of time and energy to these particular mechanistic theories, like you will see people very admirably getting deep into the weeds on specific cellular pathways or metabolic processes or whatever else, and there's little check or context provided that would make clear the extent to which most of these ideas simply will never pan out in any appreciable way for people's quality of life. like you're told you need to, basically, become an expert in your own disease, you can solve it and fix your life if only you can gain the skills to wade through this 9999th paper on whatever it is! only what happens when it turns out the published research does not have a full grasp of whatever biological processes you're trying to understand?
in a certain way this whole dynamic just serves the interests of the medical establishment anyway: the promise is always that the knowledge is out there (or, it will be any day now) and it leaves little room for political or philosophical critique of WHAT knowledge, exactly, is out there and how it's produced and what these methods accomplish and whom they serve. yknow, you just need to find the next dizzyingly complicated overlabelled chemical flowchart made by a maligned secret genius doctor that will explain exactly how it all works. and then the body will for sure obey that. because THIS person is the one who has finally learned all the rules, and THIS time they'll work in practice exactly like they do on paper. we prommy

Subject: Trial 23 of Beard Hair Growth Supplement - Male Test Subject
Our team conducted the study on the effectiveness of your recently developed beard hair growth supplement on a male test subject, age 28 (Subject 23 B) . The subject showed initially a sparse beard growth pattern.  As is typical [REDACTED] used a combination of visual observation and measuring tools to track the growth of the subject 23 B’s beard. After the supplement was administered,  [REDACTED] used a digital camera to take photographs of the subject's beard before and after the administration of the supplement. This allowed for a more detailed analysis of the subject's beard growth over the period of the experiment, as well as a more accurate comparison of the before and after results. As the beard grew remarkably fast,  [REDACTED] continued to measure using the  [REDACTED]  to observe and measure the extremely rapid growth of the hair. [REDACTED]  also noted the density and thickness of the beard as it grew, and documented any changes in texture or quality. Throughout the study, [REDACTED] maintained detailed records of the subject's beard growth, including the length and thickness of the beard hairs, the rate of growth, and any other notable changes.
Results of the study indicate that the beard hair growth supplement was highly effective. Within minutes of taking the supplement, the subject's beard started to grow rapidly, resulting in a large, dense beard. The subject's beard growth was remarkable, with an increase in length of approximately 4 inches, and a significant increase in thickness and density. Additionally, the subject noted that the hairs were growing at a faster rate than normal and were of a stronger, healthier quality.  [REDACTED] also observed an increase and growth of a significant amount of body hair. New, thick, vigorous androgenic hair sprouted all over Subject 23 B’s stomach, chest, shoulders and arms.  Subject 23 B showed surprise and alarm at these changes, the subject ultimately appeared to be satisfied with the results once the growth appeared to stop. In addition,  [REDACTED] noted that head hair as well as eyebrows also appeared to grow during the duration of the study.
The subject reported feeling “confident” with his new beard, and stated that he had always been self-conscious about his sparse beard growth  However, he was also alarmed by the dense new hair covering his body. Subject told  [REDACTED] :“I’m hairy as hell!” and “I never imagined I’d be a hairy guy like this.” Following the experiment Subject 23 B also noted that his peers were shocked by his appearance but commented positively on his new beard. While Subject 23 B was initially surprised by the extensive new growth of body hair,  he reports that he is now happy with the extensive and thick coverage of androgenic body hair.  Overall, Subject 23 B reported that he is grateful for the opportunity to participate in the study. CONCLUSION:
While the rapid and noticeable effects of the supplement are impressive, we recommend that additional study is needed to assess the long-term effects of the supplement on the subject's beard growth and overall health. It is also essential to test the supplement on a larger and more diverse group of individuals to confirm its effectiveness and ensure its safety for use. The additional and very significant increase in androgenic body hair may pose some concern to marketability.
Overall, the results of this study are promising, and we look forward to further research on this supplement to better understand its potential benefits for individuals seeking to stimulate hair growth.
Sincerely,

The science team(+ honorary member)!! Three more (kinda) crew members from Thierri's ship. (I've got a lot more crew members on the way, will make masterpost soon!)
Tumblr media
YOSHI [Hylotl]
Yoshi was among a large batch of crew members that were brought onboard after the main trio (Thierri, Gus, Chal) took down a massive bounty which wrecked Thierri's old ship. Instead of retiring with their small fortune, the main three decided to put it towards commissioning a larger ship that could accommodate more crew members and facilities. Yoshi was initially an advisor brought on to oversee the specific accommodations for each crew member (e.g. size of living space, accessibility, coordinating sleep cycles.) After their contract expired, they were offered a full-time position aboard the ship as ship doctor once the new ship was space-ready.
While Yoshi's main responsibilities include the general health of the crew, over time they also took up the title Head of Research Relations. Although the title sounds lofty, it mostly entails passing on data and samples from bounties to the resident researchers at the time as well as managing said researchers.
Yoshi was born and raised in the "shallows" of the Hyotyl Domain. "Shallows" being slang for Hyotyl colonies that are ideologically and culturally (rather than geographically) distant from the Hyotyl homeworld.* Many of such settlements, including Yoshi's, are more diverse than the more homologous settlements deeper in the Hyotyl Domain. As a result Yoshi has extensive experience treating many biologies besides hyotyl.
Despite having only a few medical staff under their supervision, Yoshi handles the health and well-being of the entire crew very efficiently with the help of many specialized machines/tools. Some would say there are more machines than necessary to the operation of the medical bay, however Yoshi has a justification ready for each one.
For example, The "Artisanal" Mold-Maker 5028, marketed for its aptitude in converting 3D models into candy molds nigh instantly is essential to the organization and sorting of individual crew members' essential vitamins and other regular supplements. By casting each supplement in the gummy shape of its corresponding crew member, it's nearly impossible for someone to mistake their supplement for somebody else's. (Though it doesn't stop Chal and Gus from playing with them like dolls.)
While their mask of patience that barely hides their eagerness to connect has captured the heart of the crew, Yoshi doesn't plan on staying aboard forever. Their dream is to become a pediatrician in their hometown, however they have yet to start the extra training required due to lack of funding.
*: The colonies/settlements that are closer to the Hyotyl homeworld are usually referred to as "deeper" and the homeworld itself as the "depths" (or for the less favorably inclined: "the pits.") While these terms are commonplace in all Hyotyl colonies/settlements, they are almost never used on the Hyotyl homeworld**.
**: I also feel that it is relevant to mention that Letheia Corp and the Alliance of Hyotyl Fiefdoms are at odds with each other. A majority of homeworld lords are against the relative freedom many offworld settlements have from the domain of the fiefs. Many of them accurately suspect that Letheia often undermines the control of the Fiefdoms in shallower settlements.

ONAE SEPTUS [Mantizi]
(Placed further up for easier understanding, sorry Kil'Zeer, you'll have to wait a bit.)
Onae Septus was the first researcher to join the ship after the first big batch of hires (Yoshi, Loprekyat and other, yet to be named crew members.) Nae isn't actually a member of the crew, rather, nae is an independent researcher who pays to be housed on the ship as well as collect information and samples from the crew's missions/contracts. Naer research centers around eldritch beings, horrors such as the Erchius Horror and The Ruin that have been appearing much more often since the destruction of Earth. Onae will help the crew out on occasion, however the relationship is kept mostly transactional (as nae prefers.)
It took over a dozen applications over the years before Thierri accepted Onae's proposal to partially fund the ship in return for their research position. The reason he accepted when he did is mostly because ship funds were dwindling after the first expansion. His unwillingness to cooperate originated from their first meeting, when Onae proposed studying him as well. Needless to say, that did not go over well and Thierri refuses to go near naer laboratory to this day.
Onae's inner circle is very small, but very rich in personal connection. Nae finds seeking out new connections in naer workplace frustrating and often fruitless. Besides, nae is perfectly satisfied with not only their life-partner, Kil-Zeer, working on the same ship, but also gaining a peer with intellect on-par with naer own(Yoshi.)
Tumblr media
KIL'ZEER [Thelusian]
The most well-travelled of the crew, Kil-Zeer, was initially brought onboard as a custodian at the bequest of Onae, but quickly proved to be an essential asset in managing the growing pains that followed the expansion of the crew. Zee often works closely with Yoshi, helping to fill in their knowledge of various races culture around medical treatment, as their proficiency leans more towards medical knowledge over social.
In terms of relative maturity, Kil'Zeer is the oldest among the crew. Zee holds two titles in zeer home hive: Elder Council Member and Veteran Warrior. The aforementioned home hive is made up of six previously warring hives that joined together against a larger threat (more on that later.) Kil'Zeer played a major part in steering the newly formed hive council away from an isolationist stance by personally seeking out allies beyond other Thelusian hives. Despite zeer massive contributions to the formation of a new hive, many criticized zeer actions as too risky as it could bring galactic attention to their weakened state after finishing a war, signalling them as an easy target for any imperial power out there. As a result Kil'Zeer was voted into indefinite suspension of council duties.
Zee took zeer suspension well, all things considered. Zee'r treating it as a long vacation with zeer life-partner Onae, who zee met when zee was a young warrior, but after the hives started to join they rarely had a chance to see each other. Kil'Zeer is confident that the council will end the suspension eventually, but until that day comes, zee is going to spend as much time with Onae as possible.

Finding His Way - Chapter One
Tumblr media
Summary: The Mandalorian makes an impulsive decision.
Notes: This was my first fanfiction, written in early 2020. This is my own little vision of how things could have played out for our favorite space dad and his kid. Cameo appearances by original trilogy characters in later chapters (and one sequel character cameo). My knowledge of Star Wars lore at the time came from having seen the original trilogy, sequel trilogy and season 1 of The Mandalorian, supplemented by some quick internet research. Most planets, etc. are just made up.
The Mandalorian made his way through the crowded streets of Crata Frin, a town that he’d thought would be a quiet backwater. He probably would have had better luck finding the supplies he needed in a larger town, but ever since the encounter with Moff Gideon on Nevarro, he was trying to keep as low a profile as possible. Well, as low a profile as a fully armored Mandalorian could keep. For some reason, the small town was swarming with people. He’d been lucky to find a place to land less than half a mile from the outskirts; not too many off-world ships, but plenty of land speeders, transport vehicles, and one of those ubiquitous Jawa monstrosities. At least with so many other ships around, there were plenty of parking attendants to make sure the Jawas couldn’t strip the Razor Crest again.
He had been hesitant to leave the Child alone in the ship, but the kid had finally fallen asleep after running around for close to four hours straight. A good portion of that time had been spent playing the kid’s new favorite game: making various bits of hardware fly around using the mysterious force that had saved Mando’s life several times already. It hadn’t been a huge expenditure of energy, but enough that Mando was sure the kid would sleep soundly for several hours. Enough time for the errands he needed to run, especially since he wouldn’t have to keep an eye on the kid. Still, he hated to leave the Child alone even for a short time. This whole being a father thing was hard to get used to.
Mando suppressed a sigh as the crowd around him slowed even more. Of course the food vendors had to be on the far side of town. He adjusted the bag of supplies slung over his back and looked for a quicker route through the mass of people. Normally, his armor and weaponry cleared a wide path through any crowd, but the streets here were narrow and everyone seemed tired and grumpy as the long, dusty day drew to a close.
Seeing a slightly less busy alleyway, Mando ducked into it. It was never a good idea to go into strange alleyways, but it led in the general direction he needed to go and he hadn’t seen anyone so far who would be any sort of challenge to his fighting ability. Unfortunately, the alley emptied out into a tightly packed square. At one end was a raised platform where a bored looking auctioneer was showing off a reptilian creature wearing manacles and a very tight leather collar around its neck. Ah, a slave market, Mando thought. That explains the crowd. Slaving was technically illegal in the New Republic, but auctions like this still popped up, usually in out of the way places like this.
Mando looked to either side, trying to decide which way to skirt the square. His ship was towards his left, but the main entrance to the square was also in that direction and he decided to go right. It would be less direct, but he could get out of the square through another alleyway he saw just beyond the slave pen.
It was slow going, as the spectators were reluctant to move out of his way. This must be a rougher place than I thought, if even a fully armored Mandalorian can’t impress these folks. He hoped the kid was still asleep; as he grew more proficient with his powers, the Child was able to open just about every lock on the ship and Mando was starting to worry that he’d find the kid in his arsenal one of these days. Leaving a baby alone with access to weapons probably wasn’t considered good parenting.
As he neared the slave pen, Mando realized there were children for sale. His hands clenched. There wasn’t much he could do about it without destroying the entire town, and there would be far too much collateral damage. Still, his heart ached for them; he could have easily ended up in a similar situation after the death of his parents if the Mandalorians hadn’t rescued him. Even if he had enough money to buy them all and give them their freedom, he didn’t have enough room on the Razor Crest to fit them all, and how could he choose just one? Besides, one foundling was more than enough for now.
Still inching his way around the edge of the square, he saw a woman bending down to smooth back the hair of one of the children. She wiped the child’s tears and smiled encouragingly, but her own eyes held a haunted look. Her slave collar was plain, dull metal; she’d clearly worn it for a long time, judging from the nicks and dents. As Mando passed the fence separating the waiting slaves from the crowd, the woman looked up at him. She scanned the crowd wearily, then turned back to another child who was tugging at her shirt hem. There was nothing special about her smudged face, tangled hair, or dull brown eyes. Still, Mando froze. I’m going to regret this, he thought, as he signaled to the obsequious Twi’lek who seemed to be in charge of the slaves.
“How much for the woman?” Mando asked, pointing her out,
“That one?” the Twi’lek said, raising an eyebrow. “I’m sure a proud warrior like yourself has better taste than that. We’ve got some lovely young things from Dantooine that will be on the block in just a few minutes.”
“No. That one. How much?” Mando was getting impatient. The kid could wake up any minute.
The Twi’lek shrugged. “Suit yourself, Mando. We’ll probably get 75 for her, maybe 100 if she doesn’t trip and fall on the way onto the platform.” He snickered and Mando wanted to punch him in the face. But that would just delay things and he needed to get back to the ship.
“I’ll give you 125,” he said, reaching for his money pouch. He shook out a handful of credits and held them out. He could see the Twi’lek’s eyes light up with greed; he’d likely tacked at least 50% onto the price he’d quoted but Mando just wanted to get out of this place and safely back into space.
The Twi’lek snatched up the credits and produced a leather-handled chain from his pocket. “Enjoy your purchase,” he said, snapping the clasp on the end of the chain to the hook on the woman’s collar and dropping the handle into Mando’s gloved hand.
**********************
Mariana had been standing in the slave pen for most of the day. She knew she would be one of the last to go across the auction platform; her reputation as not being good for much preceded her. It would be her, the smaller children, the older folks, and those with physical deformities knocked down for bargain prices after the more desirable slaves had been sold. Until then, there wasn’t much to do but stand around and try to keep the little ones’ spirits up. It was always hardest for them; once you’d been across that platform a few times, it was easier to be resigned to one’s fate.
She smoothed Calan’s hair back from his face for the umpteenth time that day. Hopefully whoever bought the kid would trim it for him. She’d have done it for him, but no one would trust her with anything sharp in the slave pen, and anyway, she’d probably just chop the poor boy’s nose off.
“It’ll be okay,” she lied. She hoped Calan would be okay, but she had no idea. It was the same lie she repeated to herself every time she changed masters. She wiped a tear from the boy’s face and patted his shoulder. Once again, she scanned the crowd, wondering dully who she’d end up leaving with, but it was all a blur of faces, human and otherwise, as well as a fair share of shiny helmets. What kind of person wears a full helmet in this heat? She was sure none of them were upstanding citizens, but then again, how many decent folk were hanging around a slave auction?
One of the little girls who’d come in with Calan tugged on Mariana’s shirt and she turned to find out what the kid needed now. She’d refused to tell anyone her name, but she kept asking for water or something to eat or a toy. Mariana thought the girl was in shock.
Suddenly, the Twi’lek guard was clipping a chain to the ring on her collar. Mariana was confused. It was way too early for her to be sent onto the block. As she looked up from the little girl, she saw a gloved hand take the handle of the leash. It was one of the helmeted warriors she’d spied in the crowd.
“Come on,” the man said evenly, his voice modulated by the helmet but not overly so. The T shaped visor marked him as a Mandalorian, so he probably was human underneath all that armor. Mariana shrugged to the kids and tried to climb over the low fence that separated the slave pen from the rest of the square. She heard the Twi’lek snigger as she caught her knee on the top rail and nearly took a header. Her new owner was silent, but he did stand patiently as she got her feet under her. As soon as she was steady again, he motioned for her to start walking.
She followed as closely as she could, but he was taller than her and once they left the square, he started striding out more quickly. Someone’s in a hurry, she thought as she scurried to keep up. She wasn’t sure if that was a good thing for her or not. There weren’t that many reasons why a man would be in a rush to get a woman alone, and he was clearly heading out of town. As usual, a million questions swirled through Mariana’s head but she’d long ago learned the truth behind the old saying “Curiosity killed the loth-cat.” Asking questions was never a good idea until she’d taken a better measure of her new owner’s temper. Instead of opening her mouth, she tried to remember anything she’d learned about Mandalorians. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much. They were secretive ever since the Empire’s purge, and known mostly for their formidable fighting skills. It would be best not to cross him.
It didn’t take long for them to reach the edge of town, and Mariana was out of breath long before they reached the battered but shiny ship parked on the dusty plain. She couldn’t have asked a question even if she’d wanted to risk it. Her owner pressed a button on his wrist and the ship’s ramp lowered. Without breaking stride, he led her into the belly of the craft.
Her first thought was that it was dark and cluttered. Her second thought was cut short by a clatter of metal ringing from somewhere in the gloom.
The Mandalorian muttered something she assumed was a swear word and dropped the handle of her leash. He darted forward and began rummaging around behind a pile of junk.
“Where are you, ad’ika?” he said. “Come on. Please. Aha!”
He emerged from the dark holding something small and wiggly in his arms. As he turned toward Mariana, she saw that the creature was green, bat-eared and absolutely adorable. Huge, dark eyes shone with mischief and a tiny three-fingered hand waved a shard of metal at her.
The Mandalorian sighed. “I’m sure you’ve been wondering why I bought you. Well, here he is.”
Mariana didn’t know what to say. She took a step closer, and the little creature grinned widely, showing off the tiniest, most beautiful teeth she’d ever seen. “What … what is he?”
“If you mean what species, I don’t know,” the Mandalorian admitted. “As for who he is, he’s … my son. Well, foundling.”
Mariana couldn’t believe her ears. This impressively armored warrior was stumbling over his words, clearly as in awe of the little fellow as she was. “So … you bought me to be a babysitter?” She stifled a laugh.
“More or less,” he said. “And I didn’t buy you; I bought your freedom. You can work off the debt by helping with the kid. If you want to.”
Once again, Mariana didn’t know what to say. Had this man just offered her freedom? She swallowed and looked down at the floor. When she looked back up, her eyes met the blank metal face of his helmet … and the bright eyes of his child, who had tilted his head like a puppy.
“Um, yeah,” she said. “I think I’d like that.”
“Good,” said the Mandalorian, shoving the baby at her. “Keep him out of trouble while I prep the ship for launch.”
Mariana barely had time to realize she was holding the creature before the man was gone, bustling around the ship pushing buttons and pulling levers. The little one was small but solid. Still, he wasn’t very heavy and he nestled easily in her arms. A low purring coo issued from his mouth as he offered her the metal piece he’d been playing with.
“Oh, thanks,” she said. “You really shouldn’t be playing with stuff like that. You could get hurt.” She gingerly took the shard from him, but not carefully enough. It slipped in her hand and sliced across the base of her thumb. “Ouch!” She dropped the piece of metal on the floor. “I hope your dad has a good med kit.”
The green child giggled and reached for her hand. “Don’t laugh. This happens to me a lot. It’s not funny.” Still, she found herself smiling back at the creature. She still wasn’t sure how much she could trust her new owner … no, boss .. but she certainly wanted to spend more time with this little fellow.
The ship began to shudder as the engines fired. Mariana found a crate to sit on and cradled the baby closer. “Hang on,” she said. “Here we go.”
