if you don't want to be laughed out of every town north of the hampton marshes, remember that massachusetts made paltry raiding attempts against the safe harbors of portsmouth and portland, only to have their pitiful wellfleet oyster navies smashed upon the tides of the piscataqua and the shoals of casco bay.

left without any form of coastal protection, massachusetts tried to surrender itself to it's former colony, only to be rejected on the premise of "wanting jack shit to do with that fahking mess y'all made down there". instead, it was offered some amount of naval protection from reformed militaries of the bath and portsmouth ship yards, so long as it continued to pretend lobster was gourmet food and kept buying it at extortionarily high prices.

the downeasters did take pity on cape elizabeth, though, and the coastal towns of both rockport and gloucester were allowed to join as the farthest "upwesters" of the union.

Charlie Baker, 9th of his name, declared war on the Dunkin-General-hospitals dynasty in boston from his stronghold in Milton MA. The siege lasted for almost two years, during which time it was renamed Manchingrad after the famous Russian city of stalingrad which resisted teutonic assault for years in the early 20th century and was the turning point in the second war of american supremacy. Over time, the entire region adopted the name manchganistan in reference to the famously unconquerable region between russia and india. Springfield MA, which had long depended on Connecticut for trade along the connecticut river, and Pittsfield which had long allied with Albany, quietly seceded without military intervention as the massachusetts forces were directed north.

In order to support its war effort, however, the nation of massachusetts began a protracted campaign of plundering coastal regions as far north as nova scotia, as well as taking the harbors of portland and portsmouth as naval bases to control the north atlantic. Their southern reach was curtailed by a treaty with New York City, which had in past centuries expanded considerably and separated from Neue York, the french speaking region dominated by torontonian influence. However, both parties began to squeeze connecticut for their mutual military advantage. In 2314 a Marquis of rhode island was designated with the objective to move the front as far into connecticut territory as possible, and this permanent mobile border still exists to this day.

The 'Martha McKeen' of Wellfleet by Edward Hopper, 1944

Jo recorded a subtitle, "Where Gulls Fill Their Gullets." When Hopper was asked about the title of this painting by the publisher of a small monograph of his work, he responded emphatically: "I should like to retain the title 'The Martha McKeen of Wellfleet' if possible. The young lady that the picture is named after has taken us sailing in Wellfleet harbor so often that the title has a sentimental value for us and Martha McKeen also. The title was given purposely to please her and I think it would make her feel badly if it were to be changed. There is no vessel with this name as far as I know. It was named after our friend." Hopper was inspired to paint this and some of his other sailing pictures by sailing with Martha and Reggie McKeen of Wellfleet, a much younger couple. He had been forced to give up sailing on his own by Jo who thought it was too dangerous. While the canvas was in progress, the Hoppers also went to Provincetown so that he could study the gulls at a fish house on the railroad wharf. Jo felt that the man depicted at the tiller might be Hopper himself.
