hamzahthefantastic x reader
description: it's been a full year since you and hamzah broke up, causing you to go silent towards your whole friend group. after rekindling at a grocery store, mandy invites you to a party she's hosting. you go, noticing a familiar set of eyes staring at you throughout the night.
mentions: reader heavily loves pickles, angst and yearning (obvi), she/her pronouns, slight argument, ex!hamzah (who will be back for a lottttt of different fics), sfw!
blood orange is so freaking good i was listening to blood orange and got the idea for this fic <3
--
"martin, is that..?"
you turned around in the aisles messily stacked with assorted jars of pickles and olives, revealing a guy and a girl of your past: the faces behind the whisper. you gazed at the couple in front of you with a certain whimsical, yet surprised stare. martin and mandy were the two people who, at one point, helped toronto feel like home after moving there from the states. meeting mandy at a frozen yogurt stand after she complimented your outfit with welcoming radiance, you soon met martin and became apart of their small, yet comfortable and familiar group.
it was only until you met hamzah that they remained the people who created warmth for you to take in. you and hamzah had a specific energy, tying your souls together as if they were forever meant to be intertwined. chemistry erupted from the first interaction between the two of you; a nostalgic, childlike sense of happiness emerged between you guys similar to high school football games and puppy love. with hamzah, you were never scared. in fact, risk and excitement amplified itself within you every time you took your friendship with him a step further.
it wasn't surprising when hamzah decided he'd kiss you in front of martin, mandy, claire, and chase while at martin and mandy's abode. it also wasn't surprising when you two popped out as a couple a day or two later. the relationship your friends observed was one they rooted for; you knew in that moment that none of your friends would pity you at your wedding, which was new to you after trials and errors of different relationships with different guys.
it was definitely not a fairytale of your childhood dreams with him, actually, the complete opposite. you enjoyed the fact that your days weren't always fast-paced and full of moments that felt like it should be posted on some social media to get a thousand likes. sometimes, your days were slow. your days were filled with laundry baskets piled to the top and a race to see who gets to sort clothes faster. your days were filled with morning breath and uncomfortable, yet cozy positions in bed with hamzah. your days had occasional arguments, yet, they were always solved within a day or two. this was the man you wanted to marry.
however, you've always had the mindset of fairy tales always containing an ending to them, happy or not. you saw him less and less as the relationship went on, as his channel with martin was slowly but surely taking off the mainstream media. he began to hermit inside of his office, sometimes even sleeping there for days, almost as if the job was a ball and chain tied to his leg. yet, he also didn't want it off of him no matter how many times he's found the key. he would spend days without seeing you, seemingly by choice, leaving you worried and lonely. it was after a full two years and three months that you decided to end things with him for the sake of your own mental health, sanity, and wellness.
it was hard at first; honestly, you wanted to curl into a ball and hide away from everyone. martin and mandy were supportive, as they noticed all the times hamzah ditched you to edit or to film or to email. yet, each time you saw their faces, all you could see was him. so, slowly, "yeah, you can come over later," turned into "i'll see if i have plans," which eventually and gradually turned into, "sorry, i'm busy." you felt guilty, but you needed to erase him from your mind, like white paint to a canvas, in order to fully heal. it was never going to be a permanent thing, yet it's also been a full year since you last spoke to them. this was probably one of the most awkward things you could've ever encountered and on this fateful thursday night, you did.
"oh, hi," you softly greeted, rubbing the back of your neck with your free hand that wasn't holding the grocery basket.
mandy's gaze was as surprised as yours was, "wow, it's been ages."
"yeah, y'know... i've just been busy..."
"are you doing anything tonight?"
the guilt of being gone for so long finally decided to show up, chasing after your stream of consciousness like a dog chasing a bone.
"no, no i'm not."
--
without fully realizing until you were sitting in their dining room chair, you were now at martin and mandy's amicable apartment. a cup of tea accompanied your hands; for warmth or for comfort, you weren't really sure. it's been small talk for the past twenty minutes since you've arrived. guilt, as it always does, was still biting at your chest cavity like a parasite. so, to ease it away from you, you decided to speak about the elephant in the room.
"look, martin, mandy, i'm really sorry i haven't spoken to you guys in ages and just stopped responding. honestly, i guess i kinda saw hamzah every single time i saw you two. it hurt too much and i couldn't take it anymore."
mandy held your hand in her palm, "no, i get it-"
"are we pushing you too far by, like, bringing you to our apartment right after seeing us again without it being planned?" martin asked, genuine worry laced in his vocal infliction.
"no, no, definitely not. i've healed, already," you sipped your tea, "i was planning on contacting you guys soon. i guess soon ended up being, y'know, today."
"how have you been? or, like, have you healed from you and hamzah" mandy asked hesitantly; almost as if the mere mention of his name would've broken you like fine china being dropped.
"i've, uh, i've been alright- i guess, sometimes, i still think about him. it's inevitable. the mere thought of him chases after me to this day. it's weird, like, as soon as i got rid of his stuff, i felt okay; i felt fine and i didn't cry, but then there are days where i stumble upon an ad for fantastic mr. fox and i end up crying for weeks straight. i'm not really sure, y'know, when it'll end. hopefully, soon."
mandy's grip on your hand tightened as martin listened to each word you said, processing every emotion and memory held onto your words.
"would you ever get back together with him?" martin asked, as mandy lightly slapped his shoulder, "sorry, was that too blunt? or, like- fuck- sorry you don't have to answer tha-"
"maybe."
mandy's eyebrows raised inquisitively, "really?"
you placed your cup of tea down and started fidgeting with your hands, "i mean, i've always believed in that whole fate thing. destiny can't be changed and that type of shit. i don't hate him. i guess i- what's the word- resent.. him..? i couldn't hate him if i tried. i guess what i'm saying is if the universe decided to bring us back together, i'd probably be scared, but i also wouldn't oppose it completely. i don't know; we were young and i didn't know how to communicate and he didn't know how to balance. it's obvious that it wouldn't work out, then. i don't know about now."
"you seem to have thought about this a lot, to the point where you can talk about it in that way," mandy mentioned.
"so, you would give him another shot?" martin added.
you thought for a moment, "it depends on how that shot happens."
looking at the clock, you realized that it was now almost 10 pm. though you didn't have work or plans tomorrow, you didn't want to overstay your visit and leech onto them and their house. after all, the three of you just reconnected after a full year of absence and silence.
"i didn't even realize it was 10; i should probably get going, now," you got up and scooted in your chair.
mandy reached out to give you a hug, to which you returned, "wait, me and martin are having a get-together tomorrow. it's not a rager, but it's also not, like, lame, i guess. come. chase and claire are visiting and they've been asking about you lately too. everyone misses you."
the whole day was filled of taking chances and playing with the fate you previously thought you were aware of. what's one more game of odds?
"sure. i'll be there."
--
the house was dark, yet also thoughtfully lit with ambient lighting. shades of oranges and blues lit everyone's skin with a contrasting hue, reminiscent of a sunset on the ocean. there wasn't too many people there; if anything, you knew a good majority of them. yet, the thought of why you knew them, or the thought of hamzah's many introductions to get you used to his crowd, made your heart hurt a little. you arrived late, letting yourself in since mandy, nor martin weren't answering their phones. greeting a couple of familiar faces on your way in, you finally found your way to martin and mandy, speaking to chase and claire.
things felt normal for the first time in a long time. you were not alone, in fact, you were with the people who created what "home" was, in the first place. for being in a room with so many people who helped create the best atmosphere for you to thrive in, you still felt lonely. you didn't know it was possible to feel this conflicted; how could you feel lonely when you know you aren't alone?
suddenly, hamzah walked through the kitchen doors to the dining table you were sat at. a red crewneck and baggy, black jeans adorned his body, as well as the black sambas that were years and years old. the beanie that adorned his head, revealing tiny, black curls peeking out of it, complimented the silver chain on his necklace; you recognized it. it was yours.
"i could not find the cups, mandy, where are the cu-"
his eyes locked onto yours as if your pupils were magnets destined to be pulled together. you, then, saw what you witnessed when you first fell in love with him: nostalgia. childlike wonder. puppy love. the table went silent, watching this encounter unfold. everyone's eyes were widened in shock. in that moment, you couldn't hear the music, nor the people around you speaking, nor the drinks being poured or dog barking outside. the only thing you were focused on was the boy in front of you. frozen in space, you hoped you wouldn't have to be the first to speak. yet, you also never were the first one to speak.
"can we talk?"
you nodded, not knowing where this conversation was going to be headed.
--
you were both outside on martin and mandy's rooftop. you mentioned to him that you find it easier to talk when gazing at the stars and being in his presence, though, you were also dating at the time. you wondered if he remembered or if this was a coincidence. currently, you were sat in silence, waiting for him to break it.
"that wasn't the first time i saw you, tonight."
your gaze turned from the stars of the sky to the ones reflected in his irises, "what?"
"this whole night, i've been staring at the door. i wasn't really sure who i was waiting for, but i just felt the need to. now that you're here, i know now. i saw you when you entered and had a mini-panic attack in the kitchen. i don't even know what to say to you now that we're out here."
it became silent again, as you didn't respond.
he continued, "i miss you. i don't think there's a single day that went by where i don't fuck myself up for losing you. fuck, baby, i miss everything about you."
"you do?"
"there's so many texts i wrote you, but i just never sent them. i almost send, like, three of them a week."
"what do they have in them?"
"y'know, updates, my life, asking how you are, apologizing for being a total fucking ass."
"you were a total fucking ass," you teased, laughing ever-so-slightly, "it's okay. it's obvious you've changed and most likely grew."
he laughed as well before his face morphed into something more serious, "if you let me, i'll spend the rest of my life making everything i did up to you."
"and remind me what you did?"
"i didn't treat you the way that i was supposed to- the way you deserve. i'm sorry, i promise i'll fix things," he grabbed your cheek gently and nudged your head towards him, "please, baby, let me fix things. i'll beg, if i have to."
you sighed, "hamzah, i'm scared."
hamzah took out his phone and put in his password.
"my birthday? you haven't changed your password from my birthday in a full year?"
"yeah, uh, i just didn't want to."
he clicked on his notes app and gave you the phone, then turned to the sky and gazed at the different twinkling lights up above.
"what is this?" you asked.
"i write you letters whenever i think about you so much to the point where it gets overwhelming.
you read the first note titled "1/19," which was a couple of days ago.
1/19
hey, baby. how are you? i miss you a lot. i went to the store today and i got the pickles you like. i don't even like pickles. or, i guess, now i do. ever since we ended things, i go to the store just to get a jar of the pickles you liked. i think every time i eat them it makes me think about that one time you forced me to try one and i literally almost threw up because of how disgusting they are. i think i just eat them because idk they make me think of you. i hope you're doing alright. i hope your studies are going good. you're graduating in, what, like a year? that's crazy. i hope i'll be able to be there with you. i'm sorry, for everything, again. i say this in every paragraph. i fucked up. i know that, but please, please let me fix it. i'll be a good boyfriend, i'll even be a good husband one day. i promise. i'll talk to you again soon.
by the end of the paragraph, you teared up. looking beside you at him, a worrisome look entered his face as he gazed ahead of him; a second chance is the most desirable thing to him. he doesn't care about money, or fame, or sex. he's been yearning for you.
you copied his move; your hand made its way to hamzah's cheek, nudging it slowly but surely towards you. the twinkle in his eyes held hope, as did yours as it mirrored him. you sat there, simply looking into each other's eyes and possibly each other's soul; there was no rush, there was only love. your lips made its way onto his, softly, for a mere second. you pulled away as his lips chased after yours, kissing once again with a certain firmness and desperation laced into it.
"i'm sorry again, baby," he admits as he pulls away, "please, please let me back into your life. i don't care how hard or how long i have to work for it; let me earn you back. i can't live without you."
you smiled one of the most genuine smiles you've had in ages, "i trust you, hamzah."
"is that a yes?"
"i dunno. what do you think, idiot?"

March 1st: Jensen’s birthday. Today, he’s turning 47, a year closer to the number he dreads, yet his age had never bothered me. All I wanted was Jensen. And I’m fortunate enough to say I have him.
He’s been working so hard since September, juggling cons and shooting Countdown, and it doesn’t end there. Once he wraps up his current project, he’s heading straight to Toronto to film The Boys, followed by Vought Rising. I moved to L.A. to be with him, both of us refusing to be apart. Yet, he comes home so late and leaves so early that I hardly see him. But not today, not on his birthday.
With the filming running behind, he still had to go in on Saturdays, and unfortunately, that’s the day his birthday fell on this year. Unbeknownst to him, I had very special plans. The first one was waking him up with breakfast and head in bed.
“Fuck, sweetheart. I don’t know what’s better: the food you make or your pretty little mouth.” Jensen breathlessly chuckles as he swipes the dribble of cum from the corner of my lip.
That was this morning, and now I’m on the set of Countdown, talking with the PAs about his surprise. As he’s finishing his scene, the most important part of my plan shows up. Jensen knew I’d meet him for lunch but had no idea I was flying his kids out from Connecticut for his special day. The only downside to both him and I was his ex tagging along. Despite the years Jay and I have been together—and after Vought Rising wraps, I’ll become their stepmother—Danneel didn’t trust me alone with them. And no matter the animosity I have towards her, I needed his children to be here.
They rush toward me, tackling me with their embrace. It had been months since I last saw them. In between cons, tournaments, and public appearances, Jensen spent his free time visiting his kids across the country. Not that I minded, but I did miss him—and them—like crazy. I wrap my arms around them, laughing with glee as they cling to me.
“Hey! I’ve missed you guys so much.”
“We’ve missed you too!” says JJ.
They squeeze tighter, close to taking my breath away. I play into it and gasp dramatically, making them giggle. My gaze falls on an annoyed Danneel, and a smirk tugs at my lips. She’s always hated my relationship with the kids. ‘Could’ve been one of the reasons she gave Jensen such a hard time about bringing me around. It didn’t matter, though; They loved me anyway. Right from the very start.
They set me free, and Arrow asks loudly, “Is Daddy almost done?”
“Yes, but it’s a surprise, remember? We have to be quiet until we sing him ‘Happy Birthday,’ then you can be as louudd as you want. Okay?”
“Okay!” A PA calls me over, and I excuse myself, but she scampers beside me and takes my hand. “Can I come with you?”
“Sure, but you have to ask your mom first.”
Arrow spins on her heel, asking her mom, “Can I go with Y/N?”
“I wanna go too!” “Me three!” Both JJ and Zep chime in.
She shakes her head. “No, you can stay here.”
They begin to whine, but she doesn’t care. “C’mon, Danneel. It’s not like you won’t be able to see them. They can help me finish a few things.”
A few producers and PAs watch her closely, waiting for her response. With all eyes on her, she caves in, grumbling a “Fine,” under her breath.
The kids jump in joy and hurry after me. Backstage was lined with Jensen’s favorite foods and desserts. All that was left was to finish the decorations and bring out the cake. Without having to be directed much, they pick up streamers and run them along the tables. They even blow up balloons and hang them where they see fit. Once we finish, I tell them my plan.
“Okay, so. I’m thinking you guys hide when Daddy comes in, and when everyone starts singing, you roll the cake out, surprising him. What do you think?” They nod their heads in agreement. Jensen’s PA comes in, quietly shouting that he’s coming. “Okay, kids, it's showtime! Go tell your mom to stand in the back so he doesn’t see her, and you guys wait by the cake.”
They run off, and I direct everyone to stand in a half circle, facing the direction Jensen will be coming from. After giving the final instruction, I turn around and wait. My heart pounds, excited to see his reaction. Everyone’s quiet, and we hear the laughter between the cast members coming off stage. It gets closer, and the curtain pulls back, revealing my groom-to-be.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” The crowd shouts, making Jensen jump.
His green eyes widen, and a grin grows. He looks around the room, and his gorgeous orbs land on me. His face says it all: He knew I put this together. That’s not all, Ackles. Everyone begins to sing to him, and he stands in amazement. I walk to the edge of the crowd and wave the kids out.
JJ pushes the cart with her dad’s favorite cake, and the twins walk beside her. His demeanor changes in shock, not expecting to see his offspring. She wheels it in front of Jensen, and the moment it’s in place, he pulls them in for a hug. Everyone watches in awe as they continue to sing. He glances toward me, tears welling in his eyes, having not seen them since Christmas.
My heart soars at the sight. They look so happy. He’d been feeling down lately, not only having gone so long without their presence but knowing their absence was to be expected on his birthday. And when JJ told me her New Year’s resolution was to see her dad more, I knew I had to make this happen. Seeing their reunion was a gift of its own.
I walk toward Jensen, settling my hand over his neatly trimmed beard as he extends his neck to kiss me. It was long and sweet, enough to make Zep cringe. We chuckle and pull away, ceasing our PDA. The traditional birthday song ends, and he blows out his candles. With his face still close, I push his head down, and it smashes into the frosting. Everyone laughs, some hooting and hollering, as they clap. He stands up, shocked that he hadn’t seen it coming before a laugh of his own comes out.
Nearly everyone snaps a picture of his cake-kissed face before he uses his tongue to clean the area near his mouth. Someone hands me a napkin, and before I can wipe him off, he grabs and holds me still. I squeal, but he shuts me up with his mouth, smearing the frosting onto mine. The crowd cheers, and he deepens the sugary kiss. We separate and clean each other’s faces off, but not in the way we would in private.
“All right, kids,” Jensen claps and rubs his hands together as the kids circle the chocolate sheet cake. “Dessert first!” They cheer, and Danneel comes out of the shadows to protest. He mutters, “I knew it was too good to be true,” before arguing back. “Hey, it’s my birthday, and as their father, I say let them eat cake!”
I roll my eyes, knowing he won’t be the one dealing with their sugar rush. Then again, it’s not like she would let me have them anyway, so to hell with her! She doesn’t put up much of a fight with everyone so close. Instead, she stomps away. Once she’s out of sight, I talk some sense into the man.
“Dad, are you sure that’s a good idea? ‘Cause if I remember correctly, you once told me that cake tastes soooo much better after eating food first.”
Understanding my hint, he nods. “You’re right. I did say that.”
“Did you make the food, Y/N?” His younger daughter asks.
“No, babe. Not this time,” They ‘awe’ in disappointment, but I assure them I will tonight. “For now, why don’t we eat some food from Daddy’s favorite restaurant here in L.A.?”
Bouncing at any chance to be closer to their father, they nod excitedly. The kids then run toward the table with the disposable eatware and grab their plates. Before I follow after them, Jensen pulls me into his chest.
“I can’t believe you did this for me.”
I turn in his arms and pull him closer. “Of course, baby. Why wouldn’t I?”
He shrugs, looking in the direction his ex-wife disappeared off to. “I guess it’s not something I’m used to.”
“Well, get used to it, birthday boy.”
Jensen gently cradles my face, tilting it up so our eyes meet. “I love you. So fucking much.”
“I love you more.” His lips attach to mine, keeping the kiss PG with our audience present. “Happy birthday, Jay.”
“Thank you, sweetheart. For everything. ‘This has been one of the best days I’ve had in a while.”
“You’re so welcome,” I press a quick peck to his luscious lips before tugging his hand. “C’mon. Let’s go feed our kids.”
He drapes his arm over my shoulder, drawing me close and planting a kiss on the crown of my head as we stroll toward the impatient children.

Best Friend For Life ~Auston Matthews~
Tumblr media
summary: y/n's best friend stephanie is getting married to the best guy in the world. aka mitch marner. she is the maid of honor but the best man tends to get on her nerves whenever they're together.
word count: 3.7k
pairing: auston matthews x reader, mitch marner x stephanie lachance
notes: so i was listening to a song the other day and for some reason, i immediately thought of mitch and his wife [friends to lovers sorta]
masterlist
"promise not to get mad at me?" was the first thing stephanie said as she walked through the door of the apartment she shared with her best friend. y/n looked up from her computer with a raised eyebrow.
"what did you do?"
"how do you feel about hockey games?"
"can't stand them. why? what did you do?" she repeated, getting up from her chair and walking over to her best friend.
"we're going to the toronto game tonight."
"and i repeat. what did you do?"
"i was at the coffee shop and i ran into this really cute guy. we talked for hours and he's so sweet. asked me to go on a date with him after his game tonight."
"oh that's great. congratulations."
"but there's a catch."
"oh god. what do i have to do?"
"his best friend is single and so are you so i figured you could tag along since his friend is going to be there too."
"give me one good reason i should, steph." y/n walked into the kitchen to make her lunch. stephanie followed her quickly and clasped her hands together.
"please come with me. i think this guy might be the one. like, for real this time."
"you're lucky i love you and believe you deserve the best."
"does that mean you'll come to the game and the date?"
"let's just see how the game goes first."
"yay. we need to dress really good." steph smirked and dragged y/n into her closet, the lunch completely forgotten.
that night, y/n met mitch and was amazed at how good he treated stephanie, even though they had only met each other a few hours earlier. his best friend, however, was not as great. he did try, but it was easy to tell that he didn't want to be there.
and it only got worse from there.
over time, they both developed a mutual disinterest in each other.
and here they were, a few years later, helping their two best friends plan a wedding.
it was very obvious from the beginning that mitch and stephanie were meant to be together so it was no surprise to anyone when mitch approached y/n to ask for her help with the proposal. he had already gotten her parents approval but he knew that her best friends approval meant a whole lot to her too. he respected their relationship and treated them both well.
the only thing that mitch did that y;/n didn't like was asking stephanie to move in with him. it left y/n alone in their apartment and it felt weird. mitch had suggested that auston move in, in place f stephanie, but y/n quickly shot that idea down. she would rather live alone than live with auston.
as the two girls sat in the kitchen of mitch's house, zeus was resting his head on y/n's lap. she stroked his ear and listened to the plans stephanie wanted for the wedding.
"i'm really honored you chose me to be your maid of honor. but do i have to dance with the best man?"
"i know you and auston despise each other but it's a tradition in my family that the best man and maid of honor share the dance after the married couples first dance."
"i know." y/n sighed. "i'll do it but i won't be happy about it."
"oh thank god. mitch and i were worried we'd have to break tradition."
"i would never allow that." y/n smiled and stood up. zeus tilted his head slightly and gave her a look. "maybe i should dance with zeus instead. he's so much cuter and he actually likes me."
"that would be cute, but it's-"
"tradition. yeah i know." y/n smiled. "how did auston react when mitch told him?"
"i think he's telling him after practice today," stephanie checked her phone. "which should be over right about now."
"i hope he has the same reaction."
over at the arena, mitch and auston were the last two out of the locker room. mitch sent stephanie a text and looked over at auston.
"hey, there's something i need to tell you about the wedding."
"what is it?"
"after steph and i have our first dance, there's a tradition in her family that follows that. the best man and the maid of honor have to dance together too."
"meaning i have to dance with y/n? seriously?""
"sorry man but it's tradition. you can put aside your hatred for one night, can't you?"
"i can promise to try but i can't promise a success."
"that's good enough for me." mitch chuckled and got to his car. "you coming over for dinner? the girls are making meatloaf."
"yeah sure. why not?" auston got in his car and followed mitch to his house. he completely ignored the fact that y/n was going to be there.
the next few days were spent learning how to dance properly. auston and y/n barely made it through without killing each other, but at least they were ready for the big day.
when it arrived, y/n and stephanie were in the room with the rest of the bridal party. the hairdresser finished the last touches on stephanie's hair and she turned around.
"so, how do i look?"
"you look like a princess. mitch is going to cry." y/n smiled and wiped a tear from her own eye. "gosh, you're so lucky. mitch is probably the last good guy on earth."
"he's the best." stephanie looked in the mirror and smiled. "i love him so much. i knew from the moment i met him that this day would happen."
"i knew too. he was the sweetest." y/n smiled. "if you guys ever have kids, that child is going to be blessed with the best genes ever."
"you and auston are good looking too. and if you guys ever get over yourselves and get together to have a child, it's going to be just as beautiful as you guys."
"we're never getting together."
"i want us to have babies around the same time so they can be best friends too."
"i can try to give you that wish. but it's not going to be with auston."
"okay. as long as i get a niece or nephew to love like crazy."
"i love you, steph." y/n pulled her best friend in for a hug before there was knock on the door. auston poked his head in and covered his eyes.
"you ladies ready?"
"auston, you can uncover your eyes." stephanie giggled and shook her head, shooting a look at y/n. "let's go."
one by one, the bridesmaids made their way to stand next to the groomsmen they were paired with. when y/n walked out with stephanie, auston couldn't keep his eyes from roaming y/n's body. the dress fit her so well and her hair was styled perfectly.
'is she not wearing any makeup? holy crap. i don't think i've ever seen her wear any. has she been this perfect the whole time?' he found himself thinking. he shook the thought from his head and took his spot next to her.
"damn, matthews. you really clean up well, don't you?" y/n nudged him with her elbow and he was suddenly at a loss for words. "what's the matter? cat got your tongue? no funny remark?"
"no. sorry." he let out a breath. "thank you for the compliment. you, um, look really good too."
"i know i do." y/n smirked. "but thank you. that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me."
"it can't be." auston looked at her and ran through their history in his mind. "okay. maybe that's true. and i'm sorry for that."
"you are forgiven, matthews." y/n watched as the pairs in front of them made their way out to where they needed to be. she linked her arm up with auston's, wished stephanie good luck and followed the man outside. they stopped at the end of the aisle and went to their designated locations. "you look great, mitchy." she whispered to mitch before taking her spot.
the music started and everyone stood up. when stephanie and her dad walked out, y/n glanced over at mitch. she had only seen him cry twice before in the few years she had known him. this was the third time she had seen tears in his eyes. he tried to hide it but when he looked over at y/n, he smiled.
as the minister went through the normal ceremony, auston kept looking over at y/n. she was watching the interactions between stephanie and mitch so intently, wiping away a tear or two every few seconds. auston was in complete awe of her.
at the reception, stephanie and mitch had the traditional first dance and when that was over, auston was more than eager to make his way to the dance floor. he and y/n took their places and began to dance
as they moved to the music, y/n looked up at auston.
"have you been practicing on your free time?"
"no, i swear. maybe you just make me a better dancer." he shrugged and moved her around the dance floor effortlessly.
"what's gotten into you tonight, matthews?"
"i think it's all the love in the air." he smiled.
"never would've pegged you for a romantic guy. no offence."
"none taken. i didn't expect it from myself either honestly." he spun her around a few times and when the song ended, so did their moment.
everyone else came to the dance floor to do their thing and y/n walked to the table to sit for a minute. stephanie was sitting beside her with a smile.
"auston is so into you."
"no he's not."
"oh please. i heard what he said before the wedding started. he was genuinely complimenting you. there was no hint of lying in his voice."
"he claims it's the love being in the air. i don't know what else to tell you."
even as y/n spoke those words, she couldn't bring herself to believe them. maybe stephanie was right and auston really was into her. she scanned the room and found him with mitch in the middle of the dance floor. they were having the time of their lives and y/n couldn't help but smile.
auston could feel someone watching him so when he looked up and locked eyes with y/n, he winked at her. she turned away shyly and sipped her drink. he thought it was cute.
y/n could feel her cheeks heating up and she hated it. she didn't like the way auston was suddenly making her feel. looking down at her now empty glass, she decided to blame it on the alcohol in her system, and as auston put it, the love in the air.
halfway through the reception, y/n was beginning to really feel the alcohol. the thing about that was it made her act differently and her voice of reason flew out the window whenever she drank.
as she downed her drink yet again, she found herself making her way to where auston was leaning against the wall. he noticed her approach him and he finished his drink.
"hey. what are you doing all alone over here? you should be having some fun. trying to pick up a girl or two." y/n giggled. why did it feel like her stomach was in knots?
"honestly, nobody here is really catching my eye." his eyes roamed the room before landing back on y/n. "might just call it a night."
"no don't." y/n sounded too eager to get him to stay so she backtracked her outburst. "i mean, it's your best friends wedding and you're the best man. you can't leave." y/n shyly looked down at her shoes.
"okay, i'll stay. but first, you gotta tell me why you hate me so much."
"what are you talking about? i hate you because on the night we met, you decided right away that you didn't like me."
"what gave you that impression?" he chuckled dryly.
"you were grumpy and it was very obvious you didn't want to be there. you put no effort into getting to know me. but i don't understand why you were grumpy. you scored the game winning goal in overtime, not to mention you had the only hat trick the entire game. that should've made you a little happier. you were so good that night. i remember telling steph 'wow. that matthews kid is really good.' like i was very impressed. and then we met and i thought you were really cute. but you had to ruin it by opening your mouth."
"you thought i was cute?"
"why do you hate me?"
"i don't. never did. i jsut really didn't want to be put on a blind double date. i hate blind dates."
"i hate them too. and i was only there as a favor to steph."
"i was only there for mitch. he was telling me during practice that he thought he met the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with and he wanted me to meet her & make sure she wasn't a serial killer or crazy in anyway."
"and look at them now. kinda crazy how they both knew right away, huh?"
"yeah. but i think it's sweet." auston looked down at her and smiled. forgetting for a second that he hated her. "i'm really happy for them though. they're good for each other."
"i agree." y/n grabbed a glass off a passing waiters tray and drank half of it in one gulp.
"do you think you'll find the person you want to spend your life with?"
"i'd like to think i will & i'm hoping it's soon. but with my luck in love, it'll probably never happen." y/n sighed. "how about you? think you'll meet her soon?"
"honestly, i think i may have already met her."
oh. well that's good." y/n looked down at her feet. "wanna dance? reception's almost over and i feel like we should get at least one more dance in, just to make the newlyweds happy." she gestured to their right where mitch and steph were dancing. they waved and danced away.
"sure. what harm can it do?"
the two of them walked out onto the dance floor and just as they were getting into the beat of the song, it ended and a new slow song started. y/n froze and looked at auston. he grabbed her hands and placed them where they needed to be before he guided her across the dance floor.
they locked eyes and it suddenly felt like they were the only people around. to everyone but them, it was obvious there was an attraction between them.
when the song ended, y/n stayed with her arms around auston's neck as they swayed back and forth.
"so there's really nobody here that catches your eye?" y/n asked, bringing up part of their earlier conversation. she played with her thumbs behind his neck and one of them wrapped itself in a curl that was loose.
"actually, now that i've thought more about it, there may be one."
"wanna point her out? maybe i can talk you up to her."
"red dress, dark hair that's half up half down with curls, no makeup because she's literally perfect and doesn't need it. she's so perfect but she's dancing with the hottest guy here. i can't compete with that."
"one of those things describe steph. she's not wearing a red dress though, nor does she have dark hair. however, i am dancing with the hottest guy here."
"i know." auston smirked and twirled her around. when he pulled her back, he was holding her tighter. "you look so beautiful right now. and not just tonight. every night since the night i met you."
"auston, are you drunk?"
"maybe a little. but i'm coherent enough to know what i'm saying and i'm sober enough to tell you that i mean it."
"auston, please don't lie to me."
"why would i need to lie to you?" he looked down at her and y/n searched his eyes for a sign of him lying. there wasn't one. "i've always thought you were beautiful. gorgeous even. out of my league for sure. and i'm genuinely sorry that i never really said anything about it."
"please don't apologize. i wasn't exactly the nicest person to be around so that must've made it difficult for you."
"difficult, yes. but worth it? totally. 100% worth it."
"do you think that if mitch and steph hadn't dragged us both on that date that night, then maybe we would have a different history than the one we do?"
"what do you mean?"
"i mean, if they had invited us to a group thing instead and that's how we met, do you think that we could've been friends these last few years?"
"for sure." auston smiled. "and maybe, if we had been friends and i asked you on a proper date, you could've said yes."
"i think i would've." it was y/n's turn to smile. "but hey. we're both still young and have plenty of life left to live. why don't we go out tomorrow night?"
"that sounds like it could be fun." auston chuckled. "and just to be clear, it'll be just us, right? no one else."
"yes. just us."
"great. i'll pick you up at 8 then."
"it's a date." y/n smiled as auston spun her around.
the following night, y/n was getting ready for the date when stephanie facetimed her.
"oh, who you getting ready for?"
"believe it or not, i'm going on a date with auston."
"oh my god. finally!" mitch cheered from the other end of the phone. his face appeared on the screen and he was sporting a large smile. "i'm so tired of hearing him pine over you."
"you're exaggerating, mitchy." y/n shook her head. "how's the honeymoon you guys?"
"it's perfect. thanks for the suggestion." steph was back on the screen. "and thanks for agreeing to take care of zeus while we're gone."
"of course. i love zeus." y/n smiled and looked at the dog, whose head was resting on y/n's lap. "who's the bestest boy? you are. yes you are."
"have fun on your date, sweetie. make sure to tell me everything afterwards."
"always. see you guys later." y/n hung up the phone and finished doing her hair. "which dress should i wear zeus?" she held up a yellow dress and zeus tilted his head. she then held up a blue dress and he barked. "thank you, zeus." y/n changed quickly and looked at herself in the mirror. "what do you think?"
zeus barked and tilted his head.
"you're so cute." y/n grabbed her purse and walked to the door when she heard a knock. "okay, zeus. i'll be back in a few hours. there's plenty of food in your bowl and your treat ball is filled so you should be fine."
y/n opened the door and auston handed her a small bouquet of orange chrysanthemums, her favorite.
"how did you know?"
"i remember you telling mitch one day that you loved chrysanthemums and how your heart would be complete if someone ever gave you the orange ones specifically. i didn't know what the different colors meant but i did some research shortly after that night and i've wanted to give you a bouquet of orange ones ever since. delicate love, right?"
"yeah. exactly." she ventured into the kitchen to grab a vase and filled it with water. "i can't believe you even remembered that. i told him like 4 years ago."
"i know. um, you may not believe me but i had a list of all your favorite things. i don't have it now because i memorized it but i figured i'd let you know."
"auston, this is so uncharacteristic of you. but i appreciate the attentiveness. no guy has ever done anything like this for me before."
"i know. it's unfortunate but you deserve it. you deserve someone who is willing to treat you like a queen. someone who can't get you out of his head, even if he tried. because you are so perfect, it's crazy."
"auston?"
"hmm?"
"stop talking." y/n smiled and pecked his lips. "you are so sweet, matthews."
"hold on just a second." he kissed her again but this time it lasted longer than a simple peck. she wrapped her arms around his neck and his found a place resting gently on her waist. auston was the first to let go of the kiss but they were both smiling from ear to ear.
"no guy has ever kissed me like that before. wow." y/n smirked.
"well all the other guys have been really stupid. and i'm not ashamed to admit that i'm part of that list."
"you're also a lot smarter than all the other guys i've been interested in." y/n's hand reached up to rest against his cheek.
"has anyone ever told you how perfect you are?"
"you did last night while we were dancing." y/n smiled and looked into his eyes. "and for the record, you're pretty perfect too."
"does that mean we're....perfect together?"
"corny joke aside, i think we might be."
"good." he smirked and kissed her again. their date was pretty much forgotten at this point as y/n pulled him through her apartment and into the living room.
auston sat on the couch and held y/n's hips as she straddled him. she looked into his eyes and felt herself getting lost in them.
"just so you know, i never bring a guy home on the first date."
"i know. and technically, if you count the blind date when we met, this is technically our second date." he smirked in response.
"it was a disaster and i feel now that our relationship has crossed the friendship line, we should just forget about the night we met."
"deal." auston smiled and they sealed their deal with a kiss. several kisses to be exact.

Could be wrong but she can't walk away from this. She needs money. And if there's a divorce she needs money. All her other plans for world domination failed. This is all she has left Unless she goes back to Suits.
If this nets her a bigger business opportunity, she absolutely will walk away from it. It's her MO:
She left Ninaki when she became besties with Markus and Jess.
She left Trevor when Suits got a full-season pickup.
She left Zara when she got designer clothes.
She left Toronto/Suits when she landed Harry.
She left The Tig and social media when she got the ring and a wedding date.
She left her father when she got Charles on her side.
She left the BRF when she got Oprah and Quibi.
She left Quibi when Harry got Amazon Prime.
They left Prime when they got Apple.
She left Vancouver when she got Hollywood via Tyler Perry.
She left Apple when they got Netflix.
She'll walk away from 'As Ever' when something better comes along.
And that's the question: what's better than this?
A huge recurring monthly alimony payment with ridiculous child support that lets her live comfortably for the next 15 years and/or Rich Boyfriend #4 who's actually, legitimately, and personally wealthy with his own fortune.

okay but how does mat propose??? (like a pt. 2 follow up to the wedding cake fic)
omg omg omg a proposal request!! let it be known, i have never been engaged, BUT all my friends got engaged/married last year so i think i'm uniquely qualified (edit: this was started in 2023, you know, when this request was sent. once again, my b). (though this might just turn into my dream proposal bc i'm in love with him).
for those of you who wanna check the part 1 of the wedding cake fic, here it is!
another edit: i wrote this to distract myself from my absolute disdain at scott mayfield.
carry on.
his hands were sweating all day.
which was weird, considering it was february.
but it wasn't weird, given what he had planned. he didn't know if he wanted to scream or throw up. the idea of you becoming his wife surely made him giddy, but it was soured with the slight chance that you might say no. he was supposed to propose before the season started up again, but he was plagued with anxious thoughts.
it's not the right time.
i'm not ready yet.
or the worst one: i don't think i'm that serious about you.
which, in hindsight, wouldn't make sense considering you were already living together and have been for quite some time. you wore his jersey to games, you had conversations about starting a family, you texted his mom and sister more than he did. there was no reason for you to say no.
right?
right?
after he chickened out back in september, mat's new plan was to wait until the bye week to propose. he was going to take you on a vacation to conil de la frontera, spain. he had everything booked and ready.
but then he was drafted for the 2024 all star games.
he could see it in your eyes, you were ecstatic for him to be recognized, but when you took a week and a half off of work, you were planning on packing your bathing suit, not taking a short flight to toronto.
you bore the slight disappointment well, smiling and kissing him and hugging him tightly when he got the news. he beamed when he saw you post about it on your instagram.
he couldn't wait any longer to ask you. your reaction to a change in your vacation plans from something warm to canada in the winter solidified what he was anxious about for months.
you loved him, there as no doubt about it.
you were the most selfless human being he knew.
his teammates had been crucial in the planning process, well, at least their wives were. bo, marty, anders, brock, and clutterbuck had been chirping him since the start of the season when they noticed that your left hand was still devoid of a ring.
"what're you waiting for, barzy?" bo asked after a practice one day. "you found a good one, she'd probably wait forever for you, but why're you making her wait?"
mat shrugged at the time, too embarrassed to admit that despite being one of the best players in the league and having millions to his name, he was terrified that it still wouldn't be enough for you. not that you'd ever demanded more from him, you'd taken him as he was and cheered for him even when he was having the shittiest time of his life.
he could give you the moon and still wouldn't feel like it was enough.
so when mat finally told his teammates about his plan in toronto, they immediately communicated to the wives who were closest to you. sydney, grace, and holly took you out to get your nails done while marty, anders, bo, and mat started researching the most romantic places in toronto on anders' laptop just in case you spontaneously went through mat's search history.
the day was planned, the photographer and necessary tickets were booked, he'd propose at the evergreen brick works after texting auston matthews about cool places to visit while he was in town, (he had to clarify that he didn't care about cool bars, and was looking to bring you along).
you'd been talking nonstop on the plane ride to toronto that you didn't even notice mat was quietly stewing. everything had to be perfect.
it was the very least that you deserved.
the first day in toronto, both of you explored the city by going to coffee shops and restaurants recommended by players and their significant others. when you made it back to your hotel room, your feet were aching.
you fell face first into the bed, whining into the comforter. "my feet hurt," you groaned.
mat laughed from his position leaning against the wall. "i told you to wear better shoes," he said.
"i didn't anticipate you dragging me all over toronto today."
"well, that's what we'll be doing tomorrow too, so prepare yourself."
"mat," you whined, finally flipping over so he could see your pretty face again. you had a cute pout on your lips that he wanted to kiss away. "we're on vacation."
"and you've never been in this city before, you should get to see it." he walked over to where you were and grabbed your hands. "c'mon, let's go take a bath and then we can order room service and spend the rest of the night in bed."
you were quick to agree.
the following day was pretty mundane. but wednesday was the cause of mat's stress.
his phone lit up with texts from his teammates, his parents, liana, tito, and ethan, all wishing him a good luck. the two of you woke up early enough to go to a local cafe and grab breakfast before taking the bus to evergreen brick work.
"you okay?" you asked, placing your hand on his knee to keep it from bouncing anymore.
he thanked whatever possessed him to keep the ring box in his coat pocket on the side that wasn't pressed up against you.
"yeah," he smiled. "just ready to get there."
when the two of you hopped off the bus, you slid your hand into his almost immediately. out of habit, mat tucked you into his side, happy to just have you close. it was a little cold outside, but it was like he couldn't feel it because of your proximity.
"mat!" you tugged on his arm and pointed at one of the signs. "they have ice skating here!" you grinned widely up at him and he couldn't help but smile right back. "we should go!"
"we will," he said. "i wanna do this trail first."
you looked at him funny. "you wanna go on a walk?"
he shrugged, tearing his eyes away from you to focus on the signs in front of him. "auston suggested this place."
"you're asking for a lot of suggestions from auston. it's unlike you..."
"there's no need to be suspcious, babe. i know that you wanted to be in a tropical place for vacation, that was the plan and everything, but since we're here, thought we'd make the most of it."
you scrutinized his face for a moment longer before nodding and pulling yourself closer to him.
after you secured another hot coffee to combat the cold, mat started leading you on the trail. while you were ordering, he was coordinating with the photographer to make sure she was in position.
the trail itself wasn't that long, thankfully because mat couldn't get a word out and if it was any longer, he feared you would've caught on that he was incapable of speaking.
you were still talking about work drama when you got to the lookout point. your voice was taken away by the sight of toronto in the background.
you hadn't always been the most observant person ever, you didn't even know he liked you until he told you verbatim when he couldn't take it anymore.
"oh my god, mat," you gasped. you pointed at the skyline in front of you with the hand that wasn't holding your coffee. "look how pretty it is!"
he swallowed and knelt down on one knee while your back was turned. mat took the ring box out of his jacket pocket, doing his best not to drop it despite how much his hands were shaking.
"have you ever seen anything that--" you whipped back around to look for him. he watched as confusion filled your face when you didn't see him standing behind you, but kneeling in front of you.
"oh my god," you whispered, dropping your coffee on the ground so you could cover your mouth with both hands. "mat what--"
"i love you," he said. "i love the way you squeal at every cute baby that comes across your for you page or the way you cry at the drop of a hat. i love how you celebrate everyone around you. you are the brightest thing in my life and if i quit my job tomorrow, i know my life would still be fucking amazing because i'd have you.
"i know that my schedule is hectic, and you could probably find a man better than me, who was more consistent, who wasn't going to play games or have practices on your birthday, who could take you out of the country for a vacation to somewhere warm instead of dragging you with me to an all star game. but i promise you, i will do whatever it takes to give you the best life possible if you'd let me. i wanna grow old and crinkly with you, i want our kids to have the same last name as both of us. i want to be able to point you out in crowds and tell strangers that i somehow managed to convince you to marry me.
"i have never been more terrified in my life than i am right now," he admitted. "but i have never been more certain of anything i want more in my life than you. so will you have me? will you marry me?"
in the middle of his speech, mat didn't realize when he'd started crying, didn't even notice that you were all but sobbing. he just recognized the scent of your perfume when you lunged towards him and kissed him hard on the mouth, your tears mixing with his.
"yes," you mumbled into his mouth. "oh my god, yes."
mat let out a watery laugh and managed to slip the ring on your finger even though his hands were shaking. you pulled him up to stand and immediately wrapped your arms around his neck to pull him close.
you were sniffling as he pulled you in for another kiss.
"i love you,' he whispered against your lips.
"love you more," you smiled back.

Taking Time—Fifty Six
Where'd all the time go?

Life is full of choices. Impossible ones. Easy ones. Choices with consequences more dire than what you realized. But that never stopped me from making them with my whole chest.
Paul left late the next morning citing a meeting somewhere up north with Jacob in Toronto. It was both a relief and filled Maya with a sense of dread as she tried to keep her face even when he kissed her goodbye for the fifth time in the brownstone’s foyer. When his hand grazed, then gripped her waist, she had to stop herself from flinching away.
And when the door finally shut behind him, Maya let out a long breath and closed her eyes tightly. There was no way. She was just stressed out, like last year, and must be recovering from that awful cold. It was just a stress response, it had to be. Still, Maya counted off the weeks since her last period over and over in her head. One, two, three, four, five, six, almost seven weeks. The number seven echoed in her mind as she fixed herself some oatmeal and then stared into the distance as she ate at the kitchen island.
Over the next few weeks, Maya practiced avoidance. She avoided Rosalie and Emmett as much as possible, which meant practically living in the library. She avoided Arden’s office, citing her ongoing cold that she wanted to shield him from until she was one hundred percent better, and instead had another TA ferry the papers needed from her hideout in the library, the coffee shop, anywhere else. Maya avoided friends and any sort of social engagement, bracing herself against the winter cold and opting instead to focus on her coursework and options for the summer for another internship.
But most of all, Maya avoided Paul, even though every waking moment she yearned for home, to see him, and smell him enveloping her. She avoided his calls, and only returned them when she knew he’d be out on rounds or in meetings per their shared calendar. She avoided lengthy texts and dodged questions about upcoming plans to see one another, swiftly changing the subject or ignoring it entirely.
The deprivation caused a different kind of ache to develop, almost a cramp in her sides and lower abdomen that had her nearly buckling over in pain on her way to the library once again, one icy February morning. Maya paused, her breath an icy fog in front of her as her nose dripped and eyes watered. Her heartbeat sped up and she felt every joint seem to light on fire at once and then quickly subside as she tried to get her bearings.
Each day was a bargain. Every morning a promise to herself that she’d wait just one more week, one more day, one more hour until she figured things out, or knew for sure what it was. She passed the campus clinic every day on her way to the library, the red signage like a bloody beacon begging her in. But still, she bargained.
She did not, however, avoid Becks or Keye. Instead, she kept her promise and refused to disappear on them. It was easy to avoid conversations about herself with Becks—she was juggling two babies—Ephriam and Novi—and keeping it about her and her day-to-day was no sweat.
Keye was a little harder to keep focused. Maya mostly talked about school, but she could feel in some small tense moments that Keye knew something was off. But she didn’t press it and Maya worked harder to stay light and positive in each new facetime. She assumed that’s why Paul wasn’t banging down her door because she was tangentially avoiding him—Becks was keeping him in the loop and he was practicing trust.
Maya almost felt bad about that.
She felt so much worse about the calls with her mother though. All thoughts about planning the wedding had left her mind with this new stress beating incessantly at the back of her head. Rish, for all her motherly goodness, did not seem to notice this new blooming anxiety in Maya however as she prattled on about colors, venues, and dress shopping. It was enough to just nod along, but it left her with a soft and sick feeling.
Her appointment with her gynecologist came and went without her putting in new birth control. She spent the hours tucked away in the library the week before the semester began, combing through reading and prepping for her upcoming classes. And just tried to keep breathing evenly.
Maya felt like a ghost, floating through campus, a hood up covering her head as she shivered against the biting January chill. Her limbs never felt warm, as if all the warmth was creeping inward protectively. She was so distracted on her way to the library that she didn’t even notice the arm that shot out and grabbed her’s, effectively stopping her in the middle of the quad.
“Maya?” the voice sounded muffled, as if it was underwater for a second. Maya’s gaze was glued to the hand on her cold arm. “Maya? Are you okay?” When she lifted her eyes, she was met with the warm, angled face of Arden. Fuck. She blinked a couple of times to clear away what she hoped was just the foggy look in her eyes before pasting on a hesitant smile.
“Arden, sorry, I didn’t see you.” her voice rasped on the end as if she hadn’t taken a drink of water in awhile. When was the last time she did, she wondered. Arden’s brow furrowed as he took her in quickly, scanning her from head to toe. Maya curled in on herself reflexively as her eyes darted to the side.
“Is everything okay? You missed the TA meeting and I thought—,” Arden sounded genuinely worried. Maya shook her head quickly and took a step away from him.
“Oh gosh, sorry. Yeah, I must have f-forgot. I’ve just been working in the library doing research and…” her voice trailed off, hoping that was sufficient enough of an answer. Arden didn’t seem convinced.
“Is something…has something happened?” Arden’s eyes darted around campus as if looking for someone. Maya’s eyes widened when she realized what he was alluding to.
“No! Oh, no, god no. I’m fine. Really. Just a little distracted. I’m fine. Paul and I are fine,” Maya nearly heard herself begging him to believe her and pulled back further. “I should get going. Sorry I missed the meeting. I’ll be at the next one. Promise!” She tried to give a more reassuring smile, but as she darted around him and hurried toward the library, she could feel his eyes on her back.
Maya closed her eyes as she briefly passed the health clinic this time on the way to the library.
“Hey babe. I finally caught you.” Paul’s warm timber sunk into her bones and made her shiver.
“Hey,” she breathed. Maya had finally answered one of his calls when she couldn’t bear not to hear his voice any longer. The ache abated almost instantly and it made her heart stutter briefly. She was still mildly irritated with the effect Paul had on nearly every part of her, but this time, the relief his voice brought was almost immediate and she couldn’t care to think about anything else.
“How are you?” he broached casually. Maya’s breath hitched and she looked off to the side. She was currently sandwiched between two rolling bookcases, deep in the library. As she pressed the phone harder against her ear she swallowed and nodded, trying to keep the tears from traveling to her voice as she said.
“Fine, yeah good. I just wanted to…” it was no use. She knew he’d hear her distress if she kept speaking. So she decided to try and change the subject. “Where are you?”
“Some roadside motel in Alaska. Jacob wanted us to keep a low profile while we try to scout some tracks.” Maya wrinkled her nose at that. She knew Paul was up north with Jacob off and on looking for something but she hadn’t bothered to ask.
“Do you know what you’re tracking?” Good. She sounded almost normal that time. Paul took a deep breath and Maya thought for a minute he wasn’t going to tell her. But then he said easily,
“Yeah. Another pack.”
Maya’s brows knit together in confusion, “Another pack? Like, a wolf pack?!”
“Yup. Jake has been trying to get in contact with them for the past year. He made brief contact after Novi was born by sheer accident but hasn’t been able to find them since. Quil might be our best bet. He’s got some distant family up here who might be able to tip us off in one direction or another, but Jake has wanted us to hide our presence as much as possible in case they’re spooked.” Maya’s mind was racing.
Why on earth would Jacob be looking for another pack? And how did she not even consider the fact that there may be more than just her tribe’s? A headache bloomed behind her eyes and she tried to will it away.
When she didn’t say anything further, she heard Paul’s voice echo, that faraway, underwater sound indicating that she had drifted away again, “My? You there?”
“Y-yeah, sorry. I…just didn’t realize,” she rubbed her forehead and licked her lips. That temporary relief Paul’s voice gave her each time he spoke abated quicker this time and she was desperate to clutch onto that warmth for just a bit longer.
“Maya?”
“Yeah?” she rubbed her cheeks realizing they were wet with tears.
“Baby, do you need me?” He said it so easily. And the obvious fact nearly made her knees buckle. She nodded her head violently, silently, before swallowing hard and saying:
“No. No, I’m fine. I’m just tired. This semester has been rough and it’s barely started. I’m okay, I promise,” she heard that begging tone creep into her voice again. Paul was quiet for a long time before he replied.
“I love you,” the words held the finality that signaled the end of a call.
“I love you, too.” she said quickly and hung up. When she bit down on her hand to help quell the tears, she knew there was nothing left to do now but the obvious.
For once, Maya called a cab. The snow had begun in earnest as she trekked across campus and she didn’t feel like walking or even taking the bus.
When she tucked into the backseat of the warmth and quiet of the cab, she let out a deep breath after giving the driver her address. He pulled out into the street and started driving carefully across the slick streets.
It had been less than twenty four hours since her call with Paul in the library, but every bit of stress felt washed anew. Maya laid her head back against the seat and closed her eyes, reliving the past hour of her life.
The doctor shut the door behind her and sat at the low stool in front of Maya as she perched on the exam table, her heart thudding loudly in her chest. The doctor gave her what she hoped was a reassuring smile, but it was as if Maya knew the words before she even opened her mouth.
Pregnant. She was, in fact, pregnant.
The doctor glanced down at the clipboard in her lap, rattling off some options but Maya heard none of them. That rushing sound filled her ears until she felt the cool hand of the doctor on her shoulder.
She was standing in front of her. When did she stand up?
“Take your time and come to the front when you’re ready. The nurse will have some paperwork you can take with you to mull everything over. Just let me know if you have any questions, okay?”
Maya felt herself nod and then, she was alone.
Well, almost.
She had looked down at her abdomen and just took several deep breaths. No tears came. No dread, or fear, or upset. Just relief.
Maybe that was the most surprising of all—the immense relief she felt at just knowing.
At some point Maya had gotten up, her legs numb from sitting up on the high exam table and wobbled uncertainty toward the front desk where the nurse gave her paperwork and pamphlets.
The sound of wet tires slowing to a stop in front of the towering brownstone brought Maya back to herself. That relief had stayed with her after she’d left the clinic, but as she paid the driver and ambled up the steps to unlock the front door, she was hit with a wave of exhaustion.
As the door clicked shut behind her in the low light of the foyer, she had only just stuffed the remaining paperwork she had desperately clutched on the drive over down into her bag before she heard that soft, reassuring voice that would find her in every life.
“Maya,” Paul stood next to the foot of the stairs that led upstairs to her room. Her mouth fell partially open as she took him in. He was actually here, dripping from the snow that had instantly melted as it met his too hot skin. His hands were shoved into the front pocket of his dark jeans and his black shirt did nothing to hide his broad, muscular frame.
Maya took three quick steps toward him, the tears already halfway down her cheeks as she crashed into his chest. His hands came up to rest on the back of her head as he leaned down to kiss the top of it. Maya gulped in air as she tried to quiet her sobs but she just couldn’t stop.
“It’s okay, My, I’m here,” he said softly.
For the first time since New Years Eve, she actually felt warm. That aching cold that plagued her limbs melted away instantly as she was enveloped by his warmth, his scent, everything.
Paul’s other hand rubbed against her back gently letting her take her time. It was a good ten minutes before she could pull her head away from his chest and gaze up at him without gasping through her tears. The relief pulsed in her like a new heartbeat.
“What are you doing here?” she breathed, unable to ask anything else. Paul’s gaze changed to studying her, his eyes darting around her face as if he was reading something new. It took everything in her not to dip her face away so he couldn’t see what she felt was written all over it now.
His hand crept to cup her cheek, the cold flush now infused with searing warmth from his hand.
“I needed to see you,” he said simply. “Our last conversation was…” he didn’t finish and Maya just nodded. “You look exhausted, babe.” Worry coated his eyes as he said it.
Maya nodded again, knowing if she spoke for too long, the truth would tumble out. She would tell him, eventually she knew she would, but right now, she just needed to sleep, preferably wrapped around him. Paul took his cue and picked her up under her knees and bridal-style carried her up the stairs to her room.
He undressed her carefully, found soft pajamas in her dresser and pulled them on her with ease. Maya was sobbing quietly, holding onto his biceps as she stepped into the long pajama bottoms he held out for her. He kissed the tears on her cheeks and pulled back the mess of covers for her so she could crawl in.
Paul wasn’t far behind her after he stripped down to his briefs and pulled her quickly into his arms as Maya cried until everything in her fell under to the sweet relief of sleep. All the while, Paul continued to whisper reassuring words against the top of her head.
Maya woke with a start and glanced around. The bed was empty and it took her a minute for things to come into focus. How long had she been out? The room was dark and void of sound except for the occasional cricket outsides. Crickets?
As the fog slowly cleared from her mind, she got out of bed, her feet touching the soft squishy bed of moss that sprawled out in every direction. Glancing toward the window, Maya realized that the moon was full, shining bright and eerie through her french doors that had pushed themselves open. A small, cold wind pushed around the white mist that hung just above the moss, causing it to curl and creep toward her as she padded quietly over to the balcony that lay beyond.
Maya swallowed thickly, a great unease growing in her stomach as she walked slowly toward the open double doors. As she looked around her dark bedroom, the damp smell of earth invaded her senses, and suddenly there were wide trunk evergreens and ferns growing around her armoir, her bed, and vanity. This forest was familiar, but it didn’t feel like the one from home. And still, that unease grew. It didn’t help that as she approached the doors, a deep rumbling became to sound throughout the forest.
When she dared to take a breath, her exhale came out in a fog around her. The tips of her toes touched the threshold of her balcony doors that now rested in the middle of the forest, and beyond it, it was simply pitch black. Maya squinted into the darkness as the rumbling grew louder from the other side, her breath coming much quicker now.
She knew she should be scared, and that something was coming. But she couldn’t find it in herself to run or let herself be afraid. The dark beyond the threshold of the door was beckoning her, a soft whisper pulling her closer to hear. And Maya wanted to know what it was saying.
Chills ran down her arms and legs, exposed to the drifting cold coming in through the doorway. The rumbling grew louder, as if the sound of great large feet pounded on the forest floor and were headed straight toward her. Still that sound beckoned her, knew her name even.
She took one step onto the threshold, a deep and sharp cold covering her foot as the sound grew:
‘Mayaaa, mayaaa, maya, maya-maya-maya-maya!’
“Maya!”
Strong, warm hands gripped around her stomach and pulled her back against a warm body. Maya’s eyes had shot open at the sudden warmth with a gasp and she began to pant, as if realizing she had been holding her breath.
She was standing in front of her balcony doors. They were pushed wide open to the cold wind and snow that had started to fall in the middle of the night. A single footprint in the thick snow just past the threshold of the double doors showed how far she had made it in her sleep. Paul gave her a moment to catch her breath, still holding her tightly to him, his hand absently rubbing across her belly and sides.
“You were sleepwalking,” he said, the concern evident in his voice. Maya closed her eyes a moment and rested her hand over his as it stilled on top of her stomach. “Has this been happening a lot?”
“I–,” her voice seemed to crack some then and Paul’s hands instinctively tightened on her. Maya was so tightly wound with the weight of everything that she thought she’d burst.
“Baby, please,” he was almost begging now, his lips coming to kiss the expanse of her shoulder, “What is it? What’s wro—”
“I’m pregnant,” she whispered. He’d heard her. His lips had stopped their journey toward her neck and she felt his body go stiff. His hands twitched ever so slightly against her stomach and the quiet was all of the sudden deafening. Maya focused on the snowflakes that started to fall gently onto her balcony. But he turned her slowly to face him, and cupped both of his hands on either side of her face and lifted it slowly up and up to look at him.
“You’re..” his words seemed stuck, a slight sheen of tears in his overwhelmingly hopeful eyes. Maya was trembling in his hold though and the immense weight of everything still sat heavy on her heart. He tried again: “You’re pregnant?”
Maya couldn’t hold it in any longer, a sob of relief broke from her throat as she nodded, tears streaming wetly down her cheeks. Paul still held her face in both of his hands as she frantically nodded. Just admitting it to him relieved the weight of that stress she had been carrying for weeks. She couldn’t see him clearly through the tears but she felt him start to tremble. Maya let her hands fall to his waist as he brushed the tears from her cheeks with his thumbs.
It felt like forever, the dam of stress breaking and washing relief through her body as she sobbed into his hands but when she could finally breathe, the sobs still hiccuping from her chest involuntarily, she saw him smiling around his own tears as he gazed down at her with so much love and concern.
“Really?” His voice was a deep well of emotion and it pulsed through her, filling her with warmth and relief. She nodded fervently again and managed to squeak out a barely audible,
“Yes.”
His lips pressed firmly to her mouth, his hands still cradling her face as bubbling laughter broke free from him.
“It’s going to be okay,” he murmured against her lips, his arms falling to wrap around her tightly. He pulled back just enough to meet her eyes, “It’s going to be okay. You’re okay,” Paul’s voice soothed.
Maya gulped down air trying to quell the tears that continued to fall in earnest, but it was no use. Everything she had been trying to hold together for the past month had broken open and there was nothing left to do but let it all spill out. And Paul was there to catch her.
He was always there to catch her.
Maya’s body shook against his as she continued to cry, letting each wave of relief his calming voice gave her seep deep into her bones. She sank further against his chest, letting herself relax as he swayed her gently from side to side.
“Everything’s going to be okay, My,” he whispered into her hair.
And it would be, wouldn’t it?
Maya woke up groggy the next morning. The light filtering in from the windows was low enough that she couldn’t really tell what time it was, but snow was still falling steadily outside. As she turned over, she let her hand automatically reach for Paul next to her, but he wasn’t there.
She sat up slowly, rubbing her eyes and looked toward her bedroom door where it sat partially open, a shadow walking back and forth slowly on the landing as he spoke in low tones.
He must be on the phone, she thought. He was speaking in a calm, quiet way that set her belly warming. Paul was here. And he said everything would be alright. And he knew now.
There was so much relief in him just knowing that she was pregnant. Was that normal?
Maya ran a hand through her disheveled hair and blew out a breath. Somehow telling him made it all the more real. She knew it would but now that relief started to be eaten away by the worry of what would come next.
Would he try to take her back to the rez? Would she essentially be put under house arrest? He had been getting so much better with giving her space and trusting her and their relationship despite the distance and now…this.
Maya looked down at her flat stomach and swallowed thickly. She heard the warm murmuring of Paul on the phone cease and the door creak open softly. As she looked up at him, she couldn’t help but gasp softly.
He always seemed to take her breath away, this beautiful man who had chosen her in so many ways outside of the imprint and now they were hurtling toward an all too certain and serious future. But still, Maya just felt relieved that he was here. He placed his phone in the backpocket of his jeans as he walked slowly toward her and sat on the bed.
Maya smiled softly as he reached out and touched her cheek, letting his thumb swipe back and forth across her jaw for a moment before letting it fall to the bed.
“How are you feeling?” his voice was gruff and sleepy. Maya nodded and said just as softly,
“Good. How are you?” she paused and then, “Feeling, I mean.” She unnecessarily clarified. He was watching her intently as if one wrong move and she would flee like a startled doe.
But Maya had never felt more solid under his wary gaze.
“Good,” he said. And then, a smile like the New York City sunrise broke over his face as he looked down at the bed, sheepish even, and let out a warm chuckle, “Really, really good.”
When he looked back up, Maya was smiling wide now and nodded her reassurance. He let himself soak in that joy for a few more seconds before schooling his face into one of serious reassurance and said, “My, look, I know this is bad timing and I’m not asking you to decide anything, but I—”
“Paul,” she cut him off, reaching across the mattress to place her hand on his. “It’s okay. This is good.” He watched her again carefully and then let loose a long sigh before collapsing fully on the bed staring up at the ceiling. And then, he just started laughing.
The sound filled Maya up, causing butterflies to fill in her stomach and run goosebumps down her arms. He was happy and that realization filled Maya with so much joy she thought she’d burst.
Maya’s smile stretched wider as she laughed softly shaking her head as he wiped an errant tear from his eye and took a deep breath, settling his laughter after a couple of minutes.
“Fuck,” he breathed out softly, turning his head on the bed to look at her to make sure she hadn’t disappeared on him.
“Fuck is right,” Maya sighed, not quite letting go of her smile. She was terrified, she couldn’t negate that fact as it bubbled somewhere beneath the surface, but right now, that worry was smoothed over with the salve of Paul’s joy.
“Can we talk about it now?” he said slowly. Maya took a deep breath and leaned up against the headboard, nodding her head and running a hand through her disheveled hair. Paul leaned up on his elbow and set his other hand on her exposed thigh, stroking gently.
“Yeah, let’s talk,” she said with some finality in her voice.
“Have you been to the doctor yet?” Paul’s tone was gentle, so gentle. And Maya knew he was treading carefully.
“Not yet, no. I had it confirmed at the campus clinic, but…nothing officially looked at,” she looked down at her stomach and raised her eyebrow.
“Can I come with you, then?” Maya looked up quickly, her face filled with loving surprise. He seemed unsure.
“Of course. Yes, I want you there,” she replied earnestly. He had to know she wanted him there. Here and now and into their future. “I’ll call today and see about getting something scheduled this week.” Maya reached for her phone and then paused to look at him. “You’ll be here this week, right?” Now it was her turn to be uncertain.
“Yeah, I’m not going anywhere,” he responded quickly. They were trading reassurances and something about that made Maya glow.
“Good,” she opened her phone and checked her calendar briefly before setting it in her lap to look at him again. “I’m not going back to the rez until the end of the semester.” She needed to say it now, before he got any ideas.
She saw his jaw tick with tension but he nodded, “Of course. I won’t make you leave, but I need to stay here with you. We can go back together when the semester is over.”
“Right,” she nodded and felt a flush of relief. At least that felt good. “What about pack duties? Won’t Jacob need you?”
“He can deal for awhile. And he’ll understand,” Paul said firmly, “When we decide to tell him, that is.” That made Maya smile. It felt like he was choosing her all over again. She tried to hide the blush that came over her cheeks and then took another deep, steadying breath.
“Wait, who were you on the phone with just now?” her curious gaze followed his as he looked toward her open bedroom door for a moment.
“Rosalie,” he said with not much regret in his voice as he normally held for her, “She and Emmett are on their way back to keep you company while I take care of something up north for a couple days.” His tone was casual, but he seemed anything but. The tension holding onto his body made Maya’s pulse tick with worry.
“I thought you were staying here,” Maya let out a laugh of surprise and couldn’t help placing a hand over her stomach. Paul’s eyes zeroed in on the movement and stared at her hand for a half second longer than he probably meant to before looking back up at her. She let her hand drop to her side as she stared at him.
“I won’t be gone very long and it’s something that needs to be done. Don’t worry, I won’t miss anything,” he promised. Maya made to stand but he grabbed her wrist and tugged her toward him. Maya crawled toward him up on her knees and braced her hands on his broad shoulders.
She leaned down to place a soft kiss to his lips and he wrapped his arm around her pulling her closer, sitting up and making her straddle him across his lap. When he finally broke free from the kiss, Maya took a deep breath. He was smiling that crazy affectionate smile at her again and it made something tighten sweetly in her belly.
“Pregnant, huh?” he said in a low tone, his warm breath fanning across her face.
Maya rolled her eyes playfully and he tightened his arm around her, “Yeah, how’d that happen, I wonder?” she teased.
“I didn’t mean to,” he chuckled, shaking his head and brushing the tip of his nose against hers.
“Uh huh,” her tone dripped with sarcasm.
“I am happy though,” his lips brushed ever so lightly across her own, teasing her, making her start to feel so very warm at the apex of her thighs.
“I am too,” Maya replied after a moment.
“Are you?” he asked with that same edge of uncertainty in his voice. Maya rolled her hips against his and he let out a groan. When she just nodded, he nipped at her lower lip and said in that warm, gravelly voice that sent sparks shooting down her spine, “Show me how happy you are then.”
His lips were on her throat, sucking and nibbling making Maya squirm on his lap. She tipped her head back to give him more access and let loose a self-satisfying moan that she felt vibrate the skin of her throat against his warm lips.
Paul’s hands gripped her waist tightly under her sleep shirt, trailing kisses down her collarbone and back up her throat. She could already feel how hard he was beneath her and she rolled her hips again seeking friction against him. Maya’s hands coasted down his chest and pulled up his shirt over his head quickly before diving toward him. He fell back onto the bed, taking her with him as she sat on top of him.
There wasn’t much left to remove between them and in a flurry of quick movement and a rustling of sheets, Maya was suddenly naked atop him and lowered herself slowly onto him, tipping her head back in a moan of relief.
There was no more avoidance, no need to keep anything hidden. She felt blown wide open with the realization that they—she—was pregnant. Her whole life had changed in a matter of years and all that mattered now was having Paul with her in this moment.
She looked down at his face, open and vulnerable in his own relief and exaltation. Their eyes connected and that familiar anchoring feeling that she knew was the imprint cinched inside her. Maya braced her palms on his bare chest as she rocked herself up and down his length, panting and reveling in the thrill of connection between them.
The unknown used to terrify Maya, and in some ways it still did. But right now, this made sense and she was going to chase that feeling to help keep her afloat these next seven months and beyond.
Paul gripped her hips in his hand, rolling his hips up to meet hers firmly as a groan of appreciation spilled from him. Maya leaned down to connect their mouths in a soft and heady kiss letting the morning take them in in all it’s slowness and quiet.
Maya shuffled precariously on the icy sidewalk, Paul’s hand gripping hers, as they made their way toward the OBGYN’s office. Carlisle had recommended them and made sure Maya was able to see them within just a few days of Paul returning from his “last” excursion up north in search of the elusive pack he and Jacob had been tracking for months.
Maya hadn’t even tried to ask any more questions around that little sidequest, she was too engrossed in her world tilting and shifting as she came to grips with her new reality. It didn’t help that Rosalie had been a flurry of excited activity in the house since Paul had let them know the other morning. With all of the attention and talks and excitement brewing in their townhome, Maya was happy to have a moment’s reprieve alone with Paul, as they made their way to their ultrasound appointment.
The office was extravagantly comfortable and although Maya had long ago given up on feeling out of place when being taken care of by the Cullens, or Paul for that matter, she was still nervous when the well dressed (and frankly well rested) nurse guided her and Paul back to their private examination suite.
The whole experience felt more like a trip to the spa than anything, wrapped in a soft terry cloth robe, on top of a warming medical bed that smelled like a calming blend of eucalyptus and rosemary.
Her doctor—Dr. Franklin—was overwhelming kind and talked her through everything as she ran some diagnostics, completed her exam and slowly set up the ultrasound machine. Paul was determinedly asking his own questions, his brow furrowed as if he was taking notes to every answer he was given. Things like: “When will she experience morning sickness? What can I do to make her more comfortable? Are there therapies that we should be considering or treatments that will help her body transition more comfortably as she progresses?”
Some of the questions truly had Maya floored. What did Paul know about imprint pregnancies that she didn’t just yet? She’d have to ask Becks.
Becks. And Keye. Fuck. Maya needed to tell them and soon. She and Paul weren’t planning on returning to La Push until spring break, which wasn’t until the end of March. But there was no way she could go that long without telling them what was up.
She made a mental note to facetime them this week to let them know when she heard the Dr. Franklin’s voice pull her from her reverie.
“Ready, Maya?” she said softly, holding the wand aloft.
“Oh! Yes, sorry. Was lost in my thoughts for a second there. The to do list is getting long,” Maya laughed to herself and she undid her soft robe to expose her belly. Paul stood next to her, refusing the comfortable rolling stool they’d offered him earlier. He gripped her hand in his and smiled down at her.
Her stomach still looked relatively flat but she was starting to feel a small rounding below her belly button that had given her a moment of pause.
The warm gel was smoothed gently across her belly followed by the warm pressure of the ultrasound. Dr. Franklin found the image she needed with ease and smiled at the display as the little shape came into view. She learned over and touched the screen to turn on the speakers and a reassuring wet thumping sound filled the room.
It was like the sun sparkling through gentle rain in Maya’s vision, as she listened, enthralled by the small, echoing sound and the fluttering heart on the screen.
“Looking good, you two. I’d say preliminary measurements are putting you at about 8 to 10 weeks. Heartbeat is strong and the sac around looks good. All signs point to healthy, but we’ll get a much firmer picture with your results here soon,” Dr. Franklin smiled up at them and Maya just sucked in a sharp breath.
Her own heart was racing and she had been flooded with so much joy that time had seemed to stop. Only Dr. Franklin’s soft voice reached her in that room with the reassurance that their baby was there, healthy, perfect probably.
Maya tore her eyes away from the screen to look up at Paul. His own eyes were glued to the fluttering image, his mouth slightly open and tears gently rolling down his cheeks. He was stunned, just as Maya had been just a moment ago. Completely glued to the realization that this was real, and they were on their way to becoming parents.
“Paul,” Maya barely said above a whisper. He blinked suddenly as if he was coming out of a trance and looked down at her. There was something new there, but the feeling was the same. Joy, unfiltered, unfettered joy. He let out a wet laugh and leaned down to kiss her before turning his head to look at the screen again.
“I’ll get these printed out,” Dr. Franklin said with a knowing smile on her face as she took more pictures with her wand.
Maya was tucked into the oversized armchair within the study biting her fingernails as she tried to get up the courage to begin the facetime call with Keye and Becks. She’d coordinated a call earlier that week, just a few days after her ultrasound, and had been putting off the call in her mind so that she could catch up on some school work.
Everything had been put on hiatus, her pending internships, her summer plans, even the wedding. And now she was trying to come to grips with telling….everyone.
It had been somewhat easy, just having Paul, Rosalie and Emmett knowing. It felt quieter, more contained and Maya was able to enjoy the small moments of realization that this pregnancy had on her as they came without the onslaught of everyone’s emotions and excitement. She knew it might be selfish, maybe even a little unfair, but this moment was something she’d never really truly have again and she had just wanted to hold onto it for a bit longer before opening it up to everyone else.
But that time was quickly coming to an end. Her mother had been calling her nearly non stop wanting to finalize some decorations and venue ideas for the wedding. And get her fitted for a dress.
There was no way she could do a wedding while managing school and her very first pregnancy. So she had to tell them.
Paul was tucked away in the enclosed office within the study, separated only by two glass french doors. He was on the phone with Michael, rearranging projects and setting up new ones based on Maya’s delivery date.
August 22nd. She was due to give birth on the first day of her final year at Columbia. The irony was not lost on Maya.
Paul had been as buoyant as a newly inflated balloon, happy and nearly bouncing from task to task as he managed his client meetings, ferried Maya to and from campus, took her out to lunches and dinners, and made sure every spare moment they had was spent reconnecting.
Maya sank deeper under the warm blanket and stared at her phone screen. It was now or never. She hit the video icon and watched as her face filled the screen.
Keye was first to pick up, munching on chips and walking to a different room in the apartment she shared with Leah.
“Bout time! Thought you were never going to call me back,” Keye said with only a small joking tone. Maya rolled her eyes.
“Some of us stay busy. Not my fault I've been buried under a mass of new papers since the new year,” Maya gave the excuse so easily. Keye took another bite of her chips as Becks beautiful round face filled the screen.
“Hi, hi! Sorry! Just got Novi down,” Becks said nearly breathless as she wandered into her expansive kitchen, “My, jesus you look gorgeous.” Maya’s eyebrows shot up.
“Do I? I mean, I’ve been sleeping a bit better, but I just assumed that’s because Paul is here,” Maya rubbed her cheek self consciously.
“I dunno, maybe it’s the light, but whatever you’re doing, it's working,” Becks replied sweetly as she busied herself putting away dishes. She had propped her phone up on the counter and Maya’s eyes wandered around the backdrop to see if there was any sign of Jacob.
“What about me, Becks? Where’s my gushing complement?” Keye bemoaned. Becks scoffed and rolled her eyes at that.
“As if I need to inflate your gorgeous, fabulous, head any more. You always look radiant,” Becks soothed.
“Thank you!” Keye proclaimed before shoving another handful of chips.
“So what’s going on with you two? Fill me in,” Becks said wiping her hands on a dish towel.
“Well—” Maya started, trying to keep her voice even.
“DUDE! I was gonna tell you the other day but you had to jump off the call because Ephi had like, pooped a pants load or something but, do you remember Janie Shortfeather?!” Keye cut in. Maya took a deep breath and played with her lower lip as she watched Becks eyes widen at Keye’s gossip.
“Yeah, didn’t she run off with that one guy—” Becks squinted her eyes trying to remember.
“Mike Waterfield!” Keye proclaimed, “YEAH! She did, but guess what?!”
“What?” Becks said as she pulled some fruit near her and started chopping. This was easy, Maya could let them banter and she could just casually drop it in. No need to drop the bomb right away. The nerves fluttered endlessly in her stomach as Keye rambled on about the scandal that was Janie Shortfeather and Mike Waterfield’s older brother Trevor who had apparently sleeping with Janie on the side. How Keye knew this rez-only information while not being on rez was beyond Maya.
After about twenty minutes, Keye’s gossip had come to a close and she scrunched up her face in disgust.
“Oh fuck, I’m sorry Maya, I cut you off earlier. What were you going to say?” Keye said. Maya’s eyes widened again and she sat up a little straighter. Her heart thundering in her chest.
“No, it’s fine, I just…wanted to talk to you guys about the wedding and tell you that, um—” Maya paused for just a few seconds before Becks’ gasp filled her ears. “What?!” Maya asked in a hurry. Had Becks just seen it written all over her face? How did she know?!
Becks face was close to the screen as if she was reading something intently.
“Oh. My. God. OH MY GOD!” Becks squealed.
“What?!” Keye asked only a little annoyed.
“Guess who’s pregnant!?” Becks said, her face a shining beacon of pure elation. Maya’s mouth dropped open in shock and she looked toward the double french doors. Paul was still on the phone but he glanced over at her and raised a concerned eyebrow. She must have looked terrified.
When Maya looked back at the screen, Becks’ eyes were welling with tears.
“I wanted to—” Maya began to apologize.
“Sadie and Seth!” Becks said at the same time as Maya began to explain.
“WHAT?! THAT LITTLE TWERP!” Keye got up from her bed that she had been lounging in and ran toward the other room, no doubt to include Leah.
Maya let out a sigh and then her own brows knit together.
“THIS IS SO EXCI—,” Becks was dancing around her kitchen.
“LEAH!” Keye was nearly breathless, “Did you know that—”
“He just called me,” Leah reassured her, her own face beaming.
“Oh my god!” Keye proclaimed as she tumbled into Leah’s lap in a giggling heap.
“I gotta call you back, Sadie’s calling me,” Becks said as she quickly toggled offscreen.
“Dude, this is so like him,” the muffled voices of Keye and Leah floated out to Maya. Keye had dropped her phone and it had sunk somewhere in the couch. No doubt Keye had completely forgotten she was on the phone.
Maya ended the facetime and let out a long sigh.
“How’d it go?” Paul was suddenly there, leaning against the now open door frame to the office.
“Sadie’s pregnant, too,” Maya said slowly, “I didn’t even get a chance to tell them.” Maya wasn’t even upset, she was just simply floored by the flurry of excitement.
Paul’s face was pure laughter as he shook his head at her. “Try again tomorrow, they’ll be just as excited for you I bet.”
“We’re gonna give the council a heart attack. Two pack pregnancies?” Maya joked. Paul had his arms crossed over his chest as he chuckled and nodded.
“Yup, dream come true,” he looked down at the floor and froze for a half second as if realizing something and his eyes glazed over with confusion.
“Paul?” Maya asked, “You good?”
He looked up at her and smiled reassuringly, but that strange look was still there, “Yeah, fine. Just thinking. Anyways, call them back tomorrow and tell them.”
“Right,” Maya said looking down at her phone. The imprint group chat was exploding with messages of congratulations for Sadie and already they were throwing out ideas for a celebration.
Maya, when are you and Paul going to rez-side again? Emily asked in the groupchat.
End of next week. Maya responded.
She had one more ultrasound scheduled before they left for spring break. And then all hell was bound to break loose at the news.
