Saturday February 25th: Yum Seng

As we post this on Sunday (26th of February) we are relaxing by our pool thinking back on a wonderful Saturday evening at our first ever Singapore wedding reception.  We were invited by Mike’s colleague Chelsea to attend the wedding reception celebrating her marriage to Kevin.  A long day of preparation and the ceremony itself (attended only by wedding party and family) culminated in a grand evening reception attended by over 300 in a beautiful Fullerton Hotel ballroom.

The festivities included an 8 course (eight is lucky number) traditional Chinese dinner.  There was no dancing, but the bride and groom (who met at a ballroom dancing group) performed dance numbers at their grand entrance and twice again during the evening.  We sat with others from P&G (locals, ex-pats, and other U.S. visitors) and enjoyed a cocktail reception prior to the 3 hour banquet dinner.

During the reception a series of Yum Seng toasts were done.  Yum Seng stands for "drink to success" in Cantonese.  It is a three part toast for 1) blissful marriage, 2) eternal love, and 3) fertility.  The chant “Yum” is sort of sung in an extended high pitch tone, followed by a quick “Seng”.

It was a great evening and a perfect way to wrap up our 3rd visit to this country. Each visit has been different; our 4-month trip in 2015 was spent exploring the island, entertaining visits from some of our children, traveling around the region, and The Piano Guys concert, 2016 was highlighted by a night at the Marina Bay Sands hotel and a brief Bintan vacation, and this year has been highlighted by dinners out with local and visiting colleagues, meeting new folks with connections to West Chester and St. Max, our James Taylor Concert, and this special evening.

We did not have a camera to take pictures of our own, but have posted a couple of Instagram videos posted by other guests.  One shows a panorama of the banquet venue (if you look quickly at the beginning and end of the video you can catch us at the next table (back to the camera).  The other shows the graceful introductory waltz performed by the bride and groom.
