We only have one whole day in Toowoomba and it's sometimes hard to know how best to use the little time you have. We pondered this one and examined the options. We chose the Highfields Pioneer Village because we liked the concept of it being run by volunteers and that it had been enthusiastically reconstructed on a not for profit basis. Well it sounded just like the sort of place we like, so we paid our concessions fee and in we went.

This village like many other of its type is made up of reconstructed buildings originally sited elsewhere. So onsite we found a church, school, honey shop, police station, jail, fire station, ambulance station, butcher and many many more. We started at the fire station where we were shown around an exhibition of old fire appliances starting with the oldest, fundamentally a hosepipe on wheels, through to more modern equipment. A very old retired fireman showed us around with his Zimmer in tow. We worried in case we might need to give him a fireman's lift at any moment, but he was fine and seemed to revel in describing the equipment he had used in his career and also relating stories from the annuls of the past. A younger ex-fireman introduced us to him but said he needed to get back to his little group who were struggling with a fire ladder thing on wheels. He said he couldn't leave these old boys on their own; they might kill themselves. All very interesting, but moving on we went to a canteen looking place for a cuppa and a damper; an old fashion bread/ cake type believed to originate in Lancashire and so named because it was intended to damp the appetite. Well it was surprisingly nice, warm and similar in some respects to soda bread. It had been cooked in a reconstructed very old log burning oven which is kept permanently burning. The church had been delivered to site from nearby Merangandan amazingly in one piece on the back of a low loader across the fields! Incredible. There were one or two other buildings from the same village, including the jail. Apparently it has never had an arrested criminal in it ever, although the manikin reclining on cell bed looked an awful lot like Ringo Starr. Apparently the only use it was put to was to house drunks overnight who voluntarily checked themselves in for the night if they weren't confident they could make it home. The church can now be hired for weddings on request. Not sure if there is a similar arrangement for the jail. The village was extremely well presented and clearly an enormous amount of time and effort has been put into it. It is sad that with 20 acres we were the only fee paying visitors there.

On the way to Coles, we saw the sign for Merangandan so we went to have a look at what remains now the old buildings are gone, but of course it wasn't possible to identify the original sites, but we did find a very nice little butchers where we bought sausages for tonight's BBQ and a bottle shop where we did a deal on a couple of bottles of SB.
