Mazin' Hamsters

Since Webkinz has been around since 2005, some changes have been made to the game. Some additions and sadly, some cuts. One deleted area of Webkinz that was close to my heart was Mazin’ Hamsters. 

Mazin' Hamsters was a region where players could play with their smaller hamster pets, established in October 2010. Mazin' Hamsters was accessed through Webkinz world but felt like an entirely other game. Players would have to download another application to play since it was built in Unity Web Player,¹ no other sections in Webkinz world had a feature like this.  Mazin' Hamster plushies could only be registered to play with in Mazin' World for the first couple of months of its release.

The look of Mazin' Hamsters was unlike the rest of Webkinz Classic. Webkinz classic stuck to a 2D art style but Mazin' Hamsters was 3D. There was a different currency system used also, Webkinz utilizes “Kinzcash” mostly while Mazin' Hamsters used “Moolah”. 

Mazin' Hamsters had two areas of play, the hamster hamlet and the mazes area. In Hamster hamlet players could do daily activities like Moolah mountain, Key Craze, and Gift Grab.¹ There were also Challenge Zones, which were different explorable maps with timers and parkour. The maps had various themes like forest, mountain, and lagoon zone. Here is a link from the Webkinz youtube channel of some gameplay. I can still vividly remember wandering around the lagoon zone.

The maze section had customizable plastic hamster tube mazes. Which were very fun to play around with and run through other players’ mazes. Here is another link to some gameplay. My brother and I could spend hours building mazes. Some days we would log on to just play with that and ignore the rest of Webkinz World.

Mazin' Hamster eventually shut down in 2015 because of the Unity Web Player. Having to download another application complicated the game, especially when most browsers stopped supporting the plugin.¹ This led to the game being shut down. The Mazin' Hamsters area was so immersive and well made it was a shock to many players, myself included.

On the Kinzville map, you can still see the maze icon where you would be able to access the game, but when you click it a pop-up comes up:

When you go to AmazingWorld.Com all that comes up is a white screen with the text "403 Forbidden | nginx/1.14.2."

Such a sad and confusing end to such a thoughtfully crafted virtual world inside another virtual world.

WHY does your camera need those??? Ohhhhh that’s probably why it can somehow photograph auras…

Anyone remember Mazin Hamsters on webkinz?

I want that back but as a full fledged mmo. You customize a hamster and run around in tube mazes and you can design and share your own maze designs. And there’s also fields and house environments to run around in as a hamster, and it’s just toontown but more hamtaro

i remember playing mazin hamsters for hours cuz i just really like mazes and i would always make up little storylines for each maze that i played, or i would have a youtube video or some music playing in the background and pretend my little hamster children were listening to music or videos on a phone or something!

i do that with a lot of games tbh, but the strongest memories of me doing that were from webkinz and pokemon shdhdj

I USED TO DO THE SAME THING WITH POKEMON OMGG (sometimes i still do honestly 👀 like I'm currently making a whole backstory for my shiny roserade in bdsp)

unfortunately i don't remember too much from the mazin hamsters era :( i stopped playing regularly around 2009-10 and was really sad to see it gone when i returned. i still have the one hammy i got though, they're the peace sign patterned one :)

Hey, so I played webkinz as a kid and I'm wondering what's it like now? I kinda want to get back into it, (my old account is probably gone not like I would remember the log in).

A lot of stuff is different but a lot is also the same! They're not producing new plushes anymore (there are still plenty out there on the market though) and they allow users to create free accounts (albeit with very few features until you adopt a paid pet). A lot of the layout and stuff looks different now but things mostly operate the same way. Some particularly glitchy features like the hamster maze and the log-out carnival have unfortunately been removed but they add new events and stuff pretty regularly. imo it's still fun!

I was just reminded that the hamster webkinz with the races and mazes and shit were a thing. I used to play that game all the time omfg. I had a shit ton of webkinz and I loved them but the hamster games were my favorite. I just looked it up and they had to close down the hamster game in 2015 bc the program thing they used was no longer supported by Firefox, chrome, or any popular web browser and I fr wanna cry 😭

Did anyone else as a child hate most online games because they were too limited...you always had to do quests and you could only walk around certain areas..the Webkinz mini game where you were a hamster exploring this gigantic maze of tubes and stuff it even had a little house to go through..that game satisfied my need for freedom..i just wanted to run

Hamsters were, sadly. Not too sure why, they weren’t doing any harm sitting there and building mazes, but I digress.

im so glad other people played mazin hamsters a lot as a kid, i was super obsessed and would also just spend hours going thru random mazes <3 its sad that theres not a lot of footage online of it. also the skunk + porcupine webkinz are trans and they are best friends

ngl if i could find one I'd watch a multi hour long playthru of someone just going thru the mazes :D

fun fact! i used to have a skunk i named Painter after a smeargle i had in pokémon soulsilver. the smeargle was female, but i made the skunk male. transmasc icon 😌
