D.W. Griffith'in "Intolerance" (1916) filmi, paralel kurgu tekniğiyle dört farklı dönemi birleştirerek sinema diline yenilik getirdi. Ancak Griffith'in "The Birth of a Nation" (1915) gibi tartışmalı filmleri, sinemanın propaganda aracı olarak kullanılabileceğini de gösterdi.

I have a fetish for stomach growling. Especially hunger. I've had it since I was nine. I really like it when a character's stomach growls in a movie, television show, video game, book or any other type of media Even when someone says they're stomach is growling when we don't hear it or when they say they are hungry, it turns me on. I also love to read stomach growling fanfiction and listen to videos of other's stomachs growling. I even make my own videos of my stomach growling (both hunger and digestion!)
and this is one of my favorite characters of all time, Judy Jetson!
Well, that's my introduction. See you on my next blog post!

A Tennessee woman is accused of paying a hitman from the dark web to kill the wife of a hiking buddy she met on Match.com and stalking the woman's whereabouts on a fitness app, court documents reveal.
Melody Sasser apparently didn’t like it when her friend, identified in recently unsealed court documents by the initials D.W., told her he was getting married last fall.
“I hope you both fall off a cliff and die,” she told the man, according to an affidavit dated May 11.

The Booksellers
I watched the excellent documentary, The Booksellers. Directed by D.W. Young, It is about people who buy, sell, and collect used, rare, and antiquarian books. It is centered primarily on such people and their bookstores in New York. As a lover of used bookstores, I was fascinated. However, unlike the subjects in the film, I do not collect books just for the sake of collecting. Used bookstores are an inexpensive way for me to obtain books I like to read. Also, the stores have so much character, particularly compared to chain bookstores. While I do also buy used books on line (abebooks.com being my usual go-to web site), going to a used bookstore is a lot more fun because you can sample the books and there is the thrill of the hunt (which is also mentioned in the film). It is amazing to hear the booksellers in the film talk about the great lengths and expense that collectors will go to in order to obtain a rare volume. One collector in the film said something to the affect of, “You can spend twenty years searching for a particular rare book, you finally get it, you have your orgasm, and then it goes on a shelf and you never look at it again.” There were also good discussions about the future the book trade.
One big surprise for me was a brief appearance of one of my favorite YouTube vloggers, Zack Hample. He is on staff at The Argosy Book Store, the oldest independent bookstore in New York. It turns out his mother, Naomi Hample, along with her two sisters, is owner of the store that her father founded. I never knew anything about Zack other than he travels to ballparks all over the USA and likes to catch and collect baseballs. (Zack’s father Stoo Hample was also an author and playwright, and Zack himself, is a published author.)
As I watched the film, I thought of the many used bookstores I have visited over the years. A few faves that came to mind are: John King Books (Detroit), Hyde Brothers Booksellers (Fort Wayne), Powell Books (Chicago) and Prairie Archives (Springfield, IL).
The only downside to the film; the entire time I was watching it, I had a feeling of ironic guilt because I was thinking I should be reading a book instead of watching a movie.

All the catcher had to try and do was catch and maintain the tennis ball. This is not what curled my excess hair. Not this call at the plate, however the call before that. Celebrate International Women’s Day by reading a book by a woman scientist!
Our recommendation: Assistant Professor of Physics Jillian Scudder’s “curious journal through our cosmic family tree,” Astroquizzical; a “quirky guide to how things work in the universe.”
Scientists are more likely to publish research articles than monographs, of course. As indexed in the Web of Science, there are nearly 35 articles published in the past three years by Oberlin College scientists who identify as female. This is not an exhaustive list by any means, and it’s impressive to see the breadth of research.
Articles are listed after the break, arranged alphabetically by the last name of the first author; faculty names are show in bold font.

Surrealism and Experimental Drama
CL 140 Winter 2019
MM116 2-3:20pm; Office hr. 3:30-4:30 at HIB 275.
Beginning around the late nineteenth century, avant-garde art set out to decenter the human mind--from conscious to unconscious thought, from waking to dreaming, from belief to performance. What happened is not an exchange of one set for the other, but a destabilization of the relation between real and imagined life which the “surreal” object and surreal experience exemplified. Yoda’s advice, “there is no try,” is the practical result of this destabilization: any act is potentially art and any art can transform us and the world. Surrealist painting and film, experimental poetry and drama, avant-garde photography, and early newspaper comics were part of this movement. Artists and writers responded around the world to the political and imaginative potential of the movement. We will study fiction, memoir, poetry, drama, photography, painting, video art, sculpture, newspaper comics, and film, together with theories of relation to the object, to explore surrealist ideas.
Assignments: 3 short response papers (readings or interpretations of a work from the course), 1 in-class presentation, and a final project (about a secret object), or five total, each counted as 20% of the grade). Attendance is required; 4 absences are allowed, after which the course grade is negatively affected.
CL140 is a safe space for LGBTQ students. Comp Lit and the UC support and protect students without documents.
Syllabus

“Donald Winnicott’s Pandemics: Surviving the Spanish Flu of 1918 & the Hong Kong Flu of 1968”
Professor Brett Kahr
In November, 1968, the seventy-two-year-old psychoanalyst Dr. Donald Woods Winnicott nearly died after having contracted the so-called “Hong Kong flu”, while lecturing in Manhattan to the New York Psychoanalytic Society. Some fifty years earlier, he had survived the so-called “Spanish flu” of 1918, during his tenure as a young medical student at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London.
Over more than thirty years, Professor Brett Kahr has researched the life and work of Donald Winnicott, having published the very first biography of the great man, back in 1996. Over the decades, he has interviewed more than 900 people who knew Winnicott personally, including some fifty of his one-time patients.
Drawing upon completely unpublished correspondence from the 1910s and the 1960s, as well as from oral history interviews with many of Winnicott’s contemporaries, including his American cardiologist, Kahr will reconstruct how this pioneer of psychoanalysis managed to navigate these two life-threatening events, spaced more than fifty years apart. Professor Kahr will narrate the chilling tale of Winnicott’s illnesses, and he hopes that, collectively, we will be able to discuss what lessons we might learn from this iconic figure in our profession, which might have relevance to the contemporary coronavirus pandemic.
*Professor Brett Kahr has worked in the mental health profession for more than forty years. He is Senior Fellow at the Tavistock Institute of Medical Psychology and, also, Visiting Professor of Psychoanalysis and Mental Health in the Regent’s School of Psychotherapy and Psychology at Regent’s University London. A Trustee of Freud Museum London and of Freud Museum Publications, he is also a trained historian, specialising in medical history and the history of psychoanalysis. A Trustee of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy and, also, the Chair of the Scholars Committee of the British Psychoanalytic Council, he works in Central London with individuals and couples (albeit by telephone at the present time). Kahr is the author of fifteen books and series editor of over sixty-five additional titles. His publications include D.W. Winnicott: A Biographical Portrait, which received the 1997 Gradiva Award for Biography, as well as the popular Tea with Winnicott, chosen as a “Book of the Year” in The Guardian newspaper in 2016. His most recent books include: Bombs in the Consulting Room: Surviving Psychological Shrapnel (Routledge, 2020) and, also, Dangerous Lunatics: Trauma, Criminality, and Forensic Psychotherapy (Confer Books, 2020). He has also written a study of Freud’s Pandemics: Surviving Global War, Spanish Flu, and the Nazis, which will be published in 2021.
Due to the coronavirus restrictions, all meetings will be via Zoom.
The talk will start at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 17th March, but Zoom will be accessible from 7.00 pm. There will be an opportunity for a Q&A session after the presentations, moderated by one of our Committee hosting the Zoom meeting.
There is no charge for current, paid up Members. Annual membership is £50.00 (£25.00 Students/Retired Members) and can be paid by Bank Transfer. Non-members are charged £15.00 (£7.50 Students/Retired Members) per meeting. Each meeting awards 1 ½ hours CPD per meeting.

That’s My DJ Season 3 is out!
Jade Hassouné plays the main character Sam this season and he’s KILLING IT. he’s so, so good & convincing & heartbreaking to watch. it literally takes like 30 min to watch the whole season, so show him some support & watch the show!
here’s some other reasons to watch it, too, because it really is a great series:
1. stunning visuals
2. great acting
3. lesbian/sapphic rep if you also watch the previous season! the main in season 2 is a lesbian (or at least sapphic) biracial woman who navigates falling in love w/ a “straight” girl. she’s played by Emily Piggford, who is incredible!
it’s a really great, thoughtful web series and it’s written and produced by women; the same women, in fact, that co-hosted a periscope about LGBT in media w/ Jade and Shailene Garnett! D.W. Waterson (creator, writer & producer) is a queer woman and the series is based on her experience as a DJ.
trigger warnings for the series include: alcohol & drug use, lots of flashing lights since it’s about DJs, some nudity, cursing, etc. season 3 specifically deals w/ grief and using drugs/alcohol to cope, so beware if that upsets or triggers you.
you can watch all 3 seasons of That’s My DJ on Youtube!
