This is a portrait of Ulziy Sandag, 80, one of only 282 Dukha people. The Dukha, Mongolia's only Indigenous reindeer herders, live in remote taiga forests bordering the Tuva Republic in Siberia. The Dukha speak a variety of Tuvan, part of the Siberian Turkic language family.
With 14 children, over 60 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren, Ulziy is the progenitor of more than half the Dukha population. Ulziy values humanity above all: "I wish all people of the world to live in peace and harmony!"

Posted @withregram • @wftda When we talk about Indigenous Peoples here in the US and abroad we consistently hear that tribes are under-funded, lack sustainable resources and equitable access to control their own lives and land. It’s hard to build a community that can stand on its own when the ability to access the necessary tools have barriers to access or no access at all. We can fix this but we need non-Indigenous allies as partners to create seats in colonized spaces to develop solutions. #indigenouspeoplesday #weareindigenous https://www.instagram.com/p/CDsugMpHhP1/?igshid=ndf038n89spj

International Day of the World's Indigenous People is observed on August 9 each year to promote and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population. There are an estimated 370 million indigenous people in the world, living across 90 countries. They make up less than 5 per cent of the world's population, but account for 15 per cent of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures. Indigenous peoples are inheritors and practitioners of unique cultures and ways of relating to people and the environment. They have retained social, cultural, economic, and political characteristics that are distinct from those of the dominant societies in which they live. Despite their cultural differences, indigenous peoples from around the world share common problems related to the protection of their rights as distinct peoples. While the exact origins of COVID-19 have not yet been confirmed, the link between environmental damage and pandemics is well known to leading research organisations. As we fight against the spread of the pandemic, it is more important than ever to safeguard indigenous peoples and their knowledge. Their territories are home to 80% of the world’s biodiversity and they can teach us much about how to rebalance our relationship with nature and reduce the risk of future pandemics. Indigenous peoples are seeking their own solutions to this pandemic. They are taking action and using traditional knowledge and practices such as voluntary isolation and sealing off their territories, as well as preventive measures. The 2020 theme for the International Day of the World's Indigenous People is “COVID-19 and indigenous peoples' resilience”. With about 197 million people belonging to 300 ethnic tribes, Nigeria is one of the most diverse nations in the world. Globally, 47% of all indigenous peoples in employment have no education, compared to 17% of their non-indigenous counterparts. This gap is even wider for women. @unesco @iloinfo @unwomen #weareindigenous #indigenouswomen #indigenouspeoplesday https://www.instagram.com/p/CDqJnD6pqHL/?igshid=11fmfijuvt0n0
