Every so often I think about the saga of katanas on the internet.

Back in the 2000's, when "weeb culture" was a whole thing, it was a relatively common opinion to see someone going full "katanas are the ultimate weapon folded a million times by master smiths and can cut through anything." It was a whole trope on TvTropes. But as time went on, more and more people started making fun of that exaggerated opinion. There was a moderately popular copypasta (4chan warning) meme making fun of it, there were a ton of "Katana vs Longsword" arguments, there's that one gif of a katana failing to cut a plastic bottle that a friend of mine loves to repost. At some point, the contrarians arguing against the katana-lovers completely overtook the original, and "katanas are brittle piece-of-shit swords that can't cut anything" actually became the more commonplace opinion. Today it seems to have calmed down, but a good five years ago or so, katana hate popped up all the time on places like Reddit.

[ For what it's worth, katanas are a perfectly fine sword. They're good at quick-draw (iaijutsu) and slashing, particularly against soft targets. Japanese smiths did a remarkable job working with poor quality iron and the result is a good sword. A katana is neither an ultimate weapon of destruction nor some shoddy piece of crap. ] It's something that I'm always being reminded of because it's the largest, most crystal-clear example of the pendulum of public opinion, at least to me. I was alive to see this shift happen in real-time. And every time I see discourse about the current blorbo show or-what-have-going going back and forth between extremes, I always remember the Katana Wars.
