NATIONAL ASTRONAUT DAY

National Astronaut Day is observed annually on May 5th.  This observance celebrates Astronauts as true heroes, with a mission to inspire ALL to “reach for the stars” by sharing “out of this world” Astronaut stories and experiences.

On May 5th, 1961, Astronaut Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. became the first American in space aboard the Freedom 7 Space capsule. The brief suborbital flight, which lasted 15 minutes and reached a height of 116 miles into the atmosphere, was a milestone achievement.  This trailblazing example of heroic bravery and adventurous spirit is this essence of what National Astronaut Day is all about.

By sharing the incredible stories, experiences, and perspective of actual Astronauts, the mission of National Astronaut Day is intended to inspire us ALL to follow our dreams, including both future Astronauts and those who seek to keep their feet on the ground!

National Astronaut Day was submitted by uniphi space agency, a division of uniphi good LLC, and declared by the Registrar at National Day Calendar® to be observed on May 5th of each year.

The first annual National Astronaut Day coincides with our first 2016 FFT fellowship -- designed by teachers at Academy of Aerospace and Engineering in Windsor, CT. Nicole Ciccarelli and Beth Penney are winding down their three-day Where Everyone Belongs (WEB) Basic Training in Temecula, CA, to eliminate bullying and create a positive, supportive and connected middle school community.

"When thinking about what we could learn through a fellowship, the big idea that came to mind was how to build a sense of community among our middle school student population," wrote Beth and Nicole in their grant proposal. "Sixth graders are, as a whole, the largest at-risk group in middle school and while some sixth graders have a support system, many do not."

"We designed our Fund for Teachers fellowship to attend WEB training and create a structure that allows all sixth graders to have support through their first year of middle school by connecting them with eighth grade leaders we train using WEB strategies."

Beth and Nicole will now be ready to provide:

Safety - by paying attention to negative forces within schools

Information - by implementing small group interactions, and

Connection - by linking 8th graders with 6th graders as a support system.

Their fellowship impact begins next Monday when they return to school. Nicole and Beth will manage an application process for seventh graders to apply for a WEB leadership position, select their first class of WEB Leaders and host a celebration event that sets the stage for a new school-wide protocol.

In June, Beth and Nicole will train WEB Leaders and prepare them for their roles as leaders and role models. Before school begins, WEB Leaders will call sixth graders the night before orientation to introduce themselves and, on the first day of school, wear identifying T-shirts to direct traffic in the halls. Nicole and Beth created a year-long timeline -- including monthly meetings on topics ranging from study skills to socializing -- that will connect sixth and eighth graders. Their goal is to decrease the number of bully incidents and school suspensions.

"We plan to put in place a structure where sixth graders get the necessary support to successfully navigate this transition and start their middle school experience on a positive note," said Beth and Nicole. "The more connected students are to their new school, the better they will do in all the measures that are important in tracking their success: grades, test scores, attendance and discipline."

Happy National Astronaut Day!  On May 5, 1961 astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space.  This model was made for the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, who manufactured the Mercury capsules used during the first American spaceflights.
