Water Proof
Bucky Barnes is pretty sure that his arm is water proof. He'd been in water with it before. Turns out his arm can handle water, but not pussy juice
Warnings: smut, fingering
This is so silly and goofy lmao
Tumblr media
It was so damn rare to see Bucky walking through the compound without his arm attached. But there he was, marching through the compound with a long case in his flesh hand and his metal arm gone.
It was rude to stare, everybody in the compound knew as Bucky walked towards Tony's workshop. The workshop that was meant to just be for Avengers stuff, but Tony did whatever the hell he wanted in there.
The damn thing was meant to be waterproof. He'd been in the water with his arm when it was less advanced, and it had been fine. He'd showered with this arm, he knew. (It wasn't something he liked to do often, but shower sex made him nervous and he liked holding his girl with both hands.)
The arm was definitely water proof, so why wasn't it working now?
He strode into Tony's workshop and threw the case down onto the workbench in front of the billionaire.
Tony didn't look up from his work. "Frosty, what can I do for you?" He asked as he looked at the wiring of something through a magnifying glass.
Bucky opened the case and spun it on the workbench to face Tony as he looked up from the wiring. "It's broken," Bucky said, voice gruff and clipped. But it always was with Tony.
Tony picked up Bucky's arm from the case. "What's wrong with it?" He asked as he observed it.
"Fingers stopped working."
Tony eyed him with suspicion. "Which fingers?" He asked and Bucky held up his middle and index fingers.
A grin split across Tony's face. "Winter Soldier, you dog!" He barked out a laugh. But then he put down the arm. "I'll get to it," he said and went back to his wiring. Yeah, he didn't want to be touching the arm that had been broken by bodily fluids.
***
The moment Bucky returned to the apartment, she was on in, wrapping her arms around him. "Is your friend going to fix it?" She asked, face against his chest.
Bucky wrapped his arm around her and squeezed. "Yeah, Babydoll, he's gonna get it fixed."
But she kept her face buried against his chest, hands gripping his shirt. "I'm so sorry, Buck," she mumbled.
He released a laugh from his lips and kissed the top of her head. "It's okay," he insisted. "It wasn't your fault."
He had her beneath him, body writhing as she kissed down her body. She was already so damn sensitive, but, then again, she always was for him.
Bucky pulled her underwear down her legs and let his tongue swipe through her folds. The noises that she released from her throat were like fucking music to him. He groaned as he looked up at her from between her legs.
He kissed her thigh almost sweetly.
His cool, metal fingers touched her and she clamped her thighs around him. "Buck," she gasped, reaching for his hair.
"Open up for me, babydoll," he whispered, and she let her legs fall open, releasing his hand from her thighs.
He ran his fingers through her folds before concentrating on her clit. She was already so damn wet for him.
His index finger breached her hole. She whined as his flesh hand settled on her hip, thumb brushing across her skin. "I got you," he whispered as his finger pumped in and out of her.
She was positively soaking him. Her breath hitched when she felt a second finger pushing in alongside the first. Her cries were so damn sweet and the way she was pulling at his hair. He placed a kiss to her hip and began moving his fingers.
She chanted his name over and over and over again as he fucked her on his fingers. He didn't much care as her slick ran down his fingers. He kept working her, thumb against her clit until she was clenching around him, legs shaking as she came with a cry.
His fingers stopped moving, stopped obeying his commands, maybe five minutes after this.
"What did you tell Tony?" She asked as she looked up into his baby blues.
"He worked it out," he answered, and she buried her face against his chest, hiding from him.
Bucky's chest shook as he gently laughed. "I can never show my face around the compound ever again," she mumbled and let go of his shirt. But she just wrapped her arms around them, slipping them beneath his shirt to touch his solid back.
"Baby, it's okay," he said and pulled away from her hip to grab her chin and tip her face towards him. "Nobody knows about us. They don't know I broke my arm making you see stars," he said with a grin. "But, I want them to know."
He leaned down and kissed her, effectively cutting off anything else she was going to say. But then she pulled away slightly, arms reaching up to wrap around his neck. "Think you can ask Tony to make it cum proof?" She asked, almost shyly.
Bucky kissed her again, walking her back until she hit the couch. "I can definitely do that," he said and pushed her back. He didn't need metal fingers to make her see stars.

when i took a dye workshop on bali last year i worked with a traditional dye, ceriops tagal (indian mangrove), made from the heartwood and bark of the tree. it's been used as a very strong orange through russet through brown dye for thousands of years across the indian ocean world (so coastal eastern africa through south and southeast asia) and is notably used for dyeing orange through brown in indo-malay batik. it's a difficult dye to access now, though, especially if you're trying to do so ethically because the indian mangrove is endangered. there are some orgs that have sustainable grow ops across indonesia that harvest the dye only every few years and do so as a by-product of local industry, because ceriops tagal is an important tree for many villages across the region for wood and other necessary purposes. not harvesting the wood at all isn't helpful as a solution, so these orgs harvest at a sustainable pace and use as much of the trees as possible to reduce waste (and i believe they run as workers co-ops, so all workers are paid fair wages and decide their working conditions)
all that is to say that i got my hands on some of the dye extract from one of these orgs and made a dye vat a few days ago and left it to sit so the colour can improve while i prepare some cotton and silk yarns to be dyed. i started doing the actual dyeing today, and the process is a lot like working with indigo, in the sense that the dye sits cold in a large bucket and you dip the fiber for five minutes before wringing and letting it hang to dry. successive dips in the vat deepen the colour, and the vat can be used until it's exhausted (ie no more colour comes out of it). it gets stronger with age, and a unique characteristic of the ceriops dye is that the dye gets darker in the sun. the chemicals in the plant that cause this unique uv-darkening aspect are also found in unripe fermented persimmons, which have been used as a dye in japan (kakishibu) for centuries. both dyes also have a unique feature in that they create a textile that is water resistant, so the dyes have been used to create waterproof stencils and the sails of ships.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the ceriops bark is in the right cup in the top left photo; the orange dye in the other two photos is the colour typical of ceriops tagal.

Bazubands part 1: A LESSON IN HUMILITY 🤣
So one of my projects for the winter break was to make a set of bazubands made for myself -- a middle eastern armor piece that provides all-in-one wrist/forearm/elbow protection, and the easiest way to get the coverage required for SCA fighting. (My garb is viking, but such are the exigencies of modern safety standards, that fighters usually wind up with a mix of armor types.)
Anyway, I packed up the necessary tools and materials and took them with me when I went to visit my parents, which is why the backdrop for these pictures isn't my usual workshop.
Found a pattern on google, cut it out of 10-12 oz veg tan, traced/carved/tooled it:
Tumblr media
(You can see why this is the easiest way to get elbow protection, it's WAY less fiddly than trying to do articulated plates around the joint.)
Soaked the elbow cop again (because it was starting to dry out by the time I was done tooling), rounded it out and stitched it up:
Tumblr media
Dyed it black, in my parents' backyard:
Tumblr media
(And if you use Angelus dyes, that's how you keep from spilling it -- the box has little perforations so that it can hold the bottle safely upright.)
WAX THAT MOTHERFUCKER:
Tumblr media
It doesn't show in that picture, but I have a metal bowl of wax (jeweler's casting wax) melting on the stovetop. I alternate between brushing it onto the leather, which looks like the picture above, and then putting the leather in the oven at ~200F, at 10-20 minute intervals, until the wax soaks in. Repeat until the leather is fully saturated and does not absorb more wax. (This often takes hours, so find something else to multitask with.)
But when you're done -- ta da!
Tumblr media
Your project will be thoroughly waterproof, very strong and hard, with a low lustre. It's functionally ABS plastic at this point.
Tumblr media
The next step was padding, so I got some sheepskin and and fitted it to the inside:
Tumblr media
(idk why it's so fucking orange, but the alternative was kind of a mint-mucus green. I think the orange is growing on me though.)
Time to pattern the other, simpler piece of the bazuband, because they're hinged to enclose your full arm:
Tumblr media
(I couldn't do this earlier, and therefore do both pieces concurrently, because I had no idea how much bulk the padding was going to add to my arm. I suppose you could wrap your arm in padding when you're measuring at the start.)
Slapped a quick design on it:
Tumblr media
(And carved & tooled it too, though I neglected to get pictures of that.)
And then--
DISASTER, MY FRIENDS.
I put it in the oven, and it lost its gd mind.
Tumblr media
WHAT.
Tumblr media
Seriously, just -- words do not do this abomination justice. o_O
Tumblr media
LOOK AT IT.
Coming so close on the heels of the Khorasan pouch, which had turned out absolutely perfect and has been more widely shared and lauded than anything else I've posted, this was a humbling experience. 🤣 Like, yes you're good, Gabriel, but you're not immune to fucking up.
So what happened here? Why did the same leather as the bazubands, undergoing the exact same steps and processes, turn out like THIS?
I'd have to repeat the experiment to 100% confirm my theory, but I'm pretty sure the critical difference is that I was speed-running this one, and I didn't wait for the dye to fully dry before I started waxing it. It wound up with, essentially, wet leather hermetically encased in wax, and since the water didn't have anywhere to go, it did weird things to the structure of the leather fibers when it started heating up. And because I don't often work with wax, I had somehow never run into this situation before, and thus already learned that lesson.
Ah well.
It wasn't a huge amount of leather, and it was only like two hours of work, so I'm not that fussed about it. (More embarrassed than anything else, at what feels like a very rookie mistake -- and conscious that it could have been SO MUCH WORSE if that had happened to the larger bazuband pieces, which had a lot more time and materials sunk into them.)
Anyway, I'm going to tweak the pattern a bit, make it narrower at the wrist and a bit longer, and change the design to something that matches the dragon better -- and let it fully dry this time. 😂

Rendoc fluff because of the category 5 Doc tweet mans brought this on himself.
Doc frowned as he struggled to move his mechanical arm. Despite specifically designing it to be waterproof to protect the precious redstone circuitry, it somehow got waterlogged after Doc was out too long in this rainstorm.
It would be just a little bit longer and he would be home, but until then he had to hope the damage wouldn’t get worse as he held his umbrella over his head.
Doc didn’t like rain in general, and especially not when it managed to find a hole in Doc’s waterproofing.
When he finally made it to his house, he tried to transfer the umbrella to his mechanical hand, but the thing jerked when he tried to grab it so he huffed and, trying ro ignore how ridiculous this would look but knowing he didn’t have any other options, put the shaft of the umbrella in his mouth and knocked, hoping Ren was home so he wouldn’t have to fish for his keys.
Doc heard click of the door being unlocked and sagged in relief, moving to get inside the house.
“Dude!” Ren protested even as he moved out of his way to let him in, “you’re going to get water everywhere!”
Doc took his umbrella out of his mouth and grunted. “I’ll clean it up, it’s just water,” he said as he shook out the umbrella.
“Uh, Doc? Your- here let me get that for you,” Ren closed the door before taking the umbrella from Doc, who nodded in thanks, and closed and put it away. Doc took note of the way Ren’s ears were twitching nervously.
“I’ll be fine, I’ll take it off and fix it-”
“With your arm jerking around like that?” Ren argued. “At least let me help take it off.” Doc opened his mouth to argue, but then the mechanical arm spasmed and Doc saw his boyfriend’s point.
The two walked over to Doc’s workshop in the basement. An aggressive twitch that nearly pushed them both down the stairs made Doc seriously begin to regret choosing the basement for his workshop.
Once they were finally fully in the workshop, Doc sat down awkwardly. One problem with being a creeper hybrid is that having four legs can be an absolute nightmare to manage sometimes. Not as bad as centaurs because at least his knees can handle sitting and laying down unlike the evolutionary failure that was the horse, but still awkward.
Ren grabbed the tools and began working at removing Doc’s prosthetic. Because it needed to connect to Doc’s nerves to allow him to actually move it, it was painful to put on and remove. Doc designed it to be able to adjust one-handed, of course, but every time his arm twitched, so did the rest of his body. His arm simply wasn’t steady enough.
This wasn’t the first time Ren helped Doc with his prosthetic, even thought he far preferred to do it himself. After a lot of convincing, Doc had taught Ren how to remove the arm, put the arm on him, and do simple fixes on it about five months after they moved in together. After that Ren had only messed with Doc’s arm a few times (even though the man was not very talented with mechanics). He clearly still remembered what Doc told him, which made something warm blossom in his chest as the arm was deactivated and placed on the table.
“Thank you,” Doc said quietly. He knew Ren’s sensitive ears would still pick up on it.
Ren smirked. “Thank you for letting me,” he replied easily, beginning to walk upstairs. “Now, I’m going to make you something to eat and you’re going to get comfy, yeah?”
Doc smiled as he followed Ren. “What exactly does ‘get comfy’ entail?”
“Warm up with a blanket and clean pajamas,” Ren elaborated.
Doc nodded. “I can do that.”
Ren giggled. The two wordlessly split ways as Ren moved to the kitched while Doc moved to the bathroom to dry himself off. Once that was done he went to the bedroom and removed his soaking wet clothes, tossing them into the hamper. He debated for a moment before grabbing a sleeveless pastel pink nightgown and putting it on. Most of Doc’s clothes had one sleeve removed anyway to accommodate the arm, but it felt nice to wear something designed to have no sleeves. Also, Doc and Ren had an inside joke about wearing pink, and even though he wouldn’t ever admit it out loud, it made him feel warm and happy whenever he wore the color.
He grabbed his favorite blanket and moved into the living room, sitting in front of the fireplace with the blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
Ren and Doc were quiet for a bit. It was broken by Ren, saying “I told you to wait another day to return, you know.”
Doc groaned, but Ren’s change from concern to banter was enough of a relief that he genuinely smiled almost as wide as his face (which was limited by missing facial muscles) would allow. “Dear, you know I’ve been through far worse than some rain. Besides, damaging the arm is a sacrifice I’m willing to make if it means seeing you.”
He turned and looked ofer the kitchen counter at Ren, who was suspiciously looking away from Doc in an attempt to hide his flustered blush.
Doc laughed, and Ren did too. It’s a nice sound. Doc thinks it might be his favorite.

looks at you with my huge giamt autistic eyes
whats the process for den building for the clans in the lake territories? what materials are used for the average den? im kinda curious if windclan dens are in like, somewhat short but wide hollowed out tunnels (if that makes sense??)
also where are things like. firkins & other handmade tools made in your rewrite? is there like a whole new den dedicated to crafts or is it just done somewhere off to the side in camp?
I need to design a camp at some point tbh. I wish I didn't hate drawing scenery.
Each Clan has access to different materials which they use to build their structures.
ThunderClan mainly uses blackberry brambles, branches, and has intricately woven dens. In the Lake, the weaving is connected up to crevaces in the quarry walls.
ShadowClan uses a lot of mudbrick and terracotta.
RiverClan likes reeds and willow wood.
SkyClan scavenges plastic bags for waterproofing and decorates with bottle caps, the basic structure is made of branches.
WindClan builds with a mix of common heather and cob, with distinctive thatching for the roofs.
Back when tunnelers were present, they probably had a central "hub tunnel" where they kept a lot of "tools" like stones, beams, and buckets of clay.
And as for where tools are made, there's no particular "workshop"! Just common piles of materials that anyone is allowed to access, and some nice mossy places where you can lay and work. If you want to be ALONE alone, that's harder.
It is perfectly allowed to go and build a den somewhere in the territory though. No one will stop you unless you're setting fires (in which case Squirrelflight will be summoned and she will beat you to death with a fire extinguisher). But it is seen as antisocial.

Recently I had the opportunity to take a one-day basket weaving workshop, which taught the basics of traditional western-european willow baskets. I made a berry basket and it was extremely satisfying.
The making of a willow basket is a lot more physically intense than I expected! You have to exert a lot of pressure and tension on your withies to get them to do what you want and to be as tight as they need to be, even though they're soaked for pliability. I got multiple blisters, and I could feel every muscle in all ten fingers the next day; my hands are not used to that kind of work.
Tumblr media
Like any new craft, it takes time for your hands to learn what to do, and by the time I was halfway done weaving just the base of the basket I could already see all the mistakes I'd made in the earlier stages and knew what I should have done differently. Even when I finished binding off the top edge I had learned better how to do that, and could see how I should have done things differently for that task!
Tumblr media
But this is a first basket, of course it will be imperfect. And even with its imperfections it is both functional and beautiful, and I have a BASKET!!!! that I made with my own two hands! (and foot, and torso, and a few other bits of my body)
Tumblr media
Isn't it SO COOL?
And now I am Looking at every basket I come across, to see if I can follow how it was made. This morning I was doing my laundry and staring at my laundry basket, and was like, hey, I could do that!
Tumblr media
It's begun around the bottom with a three rod wale, followed by a French wale but starting two full rounds of withy to have enough to make a big basket. Then three rod wale at the top again, with a different binding than the one I learned but I can see how it would be done. The handles have wires going down to the bottom and back up for extra security with heavy loads. The bottom is wood boards pierced to let the spokes be added for the walls.
Makes me want to make more willow baskets!
But also there are so many other kinds of traditional basketry from around the world made from different natural materials, and I want to learn how all the rest of them work as well!!
You can use GRASSES and VINES and WOOD and BAMBOO and ANIMAL HAIR/WOOL and BARK and EVERGREEN NEEDLES and COCONUT FIBRE and BALEEN and MORE! You can make coiled baskets or plaited or twined or splinted! We have evidence of baskets going back at least 12,000 years and probably longer, given how baskets do not survive well in the archaeological record! Baskets can be made to suit almost any purpose depending on material and construction, and can even be made so tight they're waterproof!
BASKETS!!!!
(Yes I know I don't need any more hobbies. I already have too many. But there are so many cool things in the world!)

Miles "Tails" Prower Headcanons
If you have any headcanons put them in the tags, reply, or my ask box ! Any character you want me to focus on ? Message me, or hit my ask box ! Suggestions are always welcome .
Tails has autism and OCD next question !
I think when he's a little kid he's very shy, a bit on the quiet end, still super sweet, but the older he gets the more stoic he gets
He goes from like cute UwU baby shy to awkward and uncomfortable to be around shy to I honestly didn't even know he was there. Did he come with you? Shy
That's not to say he doesn't talk, but he doesn't do well in big groups, and definitely manages to master the art of simply blending into the group
I think Tails has taken apart and rebuilt Omega at LEAST once. Maybe it was to understand eggman tech, maybe it was just for funzies, maybe Omega volunteered, who knows
Tails' winter coat is a very pale lavender and stark white
Tails' claws have cut through many MANY pairs of gloves as he's gotten older
He gets a bit of a temper when he hits maybe 13-16 somewhere in that age range. I mean he spends a lot of time with Knuckles and Shadow, and Sonic also has trouble his rage from time to time
I mean, even Amy has a temper lol what did everyone expect
Tails' workshop is basically just a sensory room, not that he would ever CALL it that...
It has 2 floors, the bottom floor and half a top floor
Complete with lights that he can dim and brighten as he pleases, the top floor has walls floors and furniture that are sensory friendly, and a corner that he claims is for Sonic that has soft weighted blankets and a couple huge bean bags
I think his workshop runs a bit cold, so his coat comes in kinda splotchy during warmer months
Tails has fixed the Chaotix phones so many times that he has made them virtually indestructible
But as punishment, their phones are basically bricks lol
Sonic and co don't even have phones, Tails gave them extremely high tech watches
Like sure it tells time and makes phone calls but it also has holograms and can store chaos energy probably, they also have trackers that can be turned off or on by either the user or Tails himself
And they're waterproof with a lifetime warranty !
Sonic's eyes glow in the dark because of all his time spent with chaos energy, Tails eyes give off a dim version of that
He cannot STAND when people touch his stuff, even if they don't move it, they still touched it WITHOUT asking liiiiike make it make sense
And for that matter, he doesn't like his space invaded either. It's okay to be there while HE'S in there, and it's okay if you asked, but otherwise.....🤨 Get out. It's not like he has anything to hide, but still
He has a lot of verbal stims, especially when he's focused on something. He tends to gekker and chitter under his breath, and he clacks his teeth together too
He also does these things when he's incredibly happy or angry, just most times he is experiencing a lot of emotion. It took a long time for him to willing stim in front of more people then just Sonic
Bullying will do that to a boy 😔👊🏾
Tails tends to stay up all night working because he has toe curling chest gripping tear jerking paranoia
He just like me fr
I believe in Tails and Shadow friendship supremacy
As he gets older, Tails stops introducing himself as Tails and starts saying Miles, but he doesn't get rid of the nickname Tails either, it's just something that's reserved for his family
Tails is very adept with guns. Whether it's from spending time with Shadow or his own interest with learning, he knows what he's doing, though it's not his weapon of choice, at least not a traditional one
I try my best to not make these posts very long (I think I failed), so I tried to make sure this was only moderate length and tried to stay out of crack territory, but he's my favorite and he's so cool okay ?!
If you have any headcanons put them in the tags, reply, or my ask box ! Any character you want me to focus on ? Message me, or hit my ask box ! Suggestions are always welcome .

First try making a bike bag that fits in the frame. It's made out of boat cover fabric scraps that we get from a local sail maker. Its supposed to be waterproof. All big seams are lap seams because they are more water resistant as well (and also way more stable and pretty from the inside). The zippers are covered up with a fabric strip so that no water can enter that way. All straps are from the strap scrap bag! I like that the bag is partitioned in the middle, that keeps it from bulging to the side too much. There are some mistakes (mostly because I was lazy). The lap seams aren't perfect and the other side of the seam shows through in the middle in some places. The lacing on top is through pieces of straps and I accidentally sewed two of them into the side seams. I'm probably gonna rip that up again and free them, it bunches weirdly on top when I close the lacing right now. Gonna probably do more of these, it's super fun! I was heavily inspired by this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USX7pc-3Fac And I used a heavy-duty sewing machine that's available in our local open sewing workshop.

Korrasami: Rain and Thunder
Asami kneels atop a roof, her waterproof suit coated in rivers of rain. Thunder rumbles in the distance, and Asami wonders if she is asking to be electrocuted. Her suit does have platinum in it, which lightning is sure to find enticing.
But this is the meeting spot. She can't just leave before her date arrives. The last time she did that, her date misread her note, got lost, and Asami spent most of that night tracking her down before she ended up in a worst situation.
One should think the most powerful bender in the world should understand basic directions, but then her date excels at surprising Asami in delightful and not so delightful ways.
"Posing as a living lightning rod tonight?"
The voice comes from behind her. Asami smiles, though she knows her date can't see it considering the mask she's wearing. Asami's suit is red and black, so very hard to see in the night, especially during this relentless rainstorm.
"Only for you," Asami quips.
She glances back at the woman clad all in blue. Tonight her date's mask is a trifle silly as always, considering it's just metal helmet in the shape of a polar bear dog snout. Last week, the mask had been the face of a fire ferret. Cerulean eyes meet her own green, and a smile twitches at the edge of her date's lips.
Asami has yet to reveal her true name to the woman, but then that's part of the fun, right? By day, Asami is a boring businesswoman and engineer. Each day the woman in blue stops by Asami's workshop to ask for the most ridiculous metal commissions (Asami always finds time to make them, she simply can't help it).
Then at night, they meet on the rooftops to help rid the night of crime. She wonders if the woman in blue has figured out her identity yet. Why else would she show up in both locations?
"So, what's your fancy tech say?" her date shifts back and forth in her crouch. The rain slides off the woman's metal and fiber suit, and the thunder has gotten closer.
Best to get off the roof.
"Northeast. Four blocks away. Possible burglary. I suggest we drop in from above. And this time, try not knock them into a coma?" Asami can't quite keep the exasperation from her voice. "I'd like to actually figure out who their employer is this time."
"Oh fine," her date pouts. She pounds her fist into her other hand. "I'll be... nicer."
Asami doubts it but still. She figures a reminder can't hurt. Holding out her hand, she unleashes the rope from her wrist. It shoots across the gap between buildings. "Ready?"
The woman in blue grins, her teeth startling white against the light brown of her skin. "Always. Let's get those chumps!"
Asami laughs and swings off the rooftop.

Thanks for coming to the first Aircrete and Chill !!
Folks came from near and far to learn and commune on 10 acres of beautiful land in Antelope Valley.
An Aircrete machine is a foam generator. Aircrete is a mix of foam and cement. It can be used to build environmentally friendly shelter. It is light and can float. It is also waterproof and earthquake proof.
We used Portland cement, a binding agent and Dawn soap with our first batch. Then we put the mix in recycled vessels to dry overnight.

Le luxe est lié au temps qui passe.
- Jean Louis Dumas
Louis Vuitton’s heritage as a trunk maker preceded even the founding of the company.
It was in 1837 that a 16-year-old Louis Vuitton arrived in Paris by foot and started apprenticing for Monsieur Maréchal. At the time, horse-drawn carriages, boats and trains were the main modes of transportation, and baggage was handled roughly. Travelers called upon craftsmen to pack and protect their individual objects.
Louis Vuitton quickly became a valued craftsman at the Parisian atelier of Monsieur Maréchal. These were the roots of his highly specialised trade; the beginnings of his career in an artisanal industry that called upon skills to custom design boxes and, later, trunks according to clients’ wishes. Louis Vuitton stayed for 17 years before opening his own workshop at 4 Rue Neuve-des-Capucines near the Place Vendome in 1854.
As rail and then automobile travel became an established part of life, Vuitton’s business began to grow. The early success of Louis Vuitton meant he had to expand his operations. This lead to the 1859 opening of his atelier in Asnières. Just northeast of the center of Paris, the workshop started with 20 employees.
In 1900, there were nearly 100 people and by 1914 there were 225.The original atelier has been expanded throughout the decades - including the addition of the Vuitton family residence - but it is still where products are crafted today.
While the family home has been preserved and is part of a private museum, 170 craftsmen work in the Asnières workshop, designing and creating leather goods and special orders for clients around the world.
In the 1900s, travelers carried all their essentials inside wardrobes and flat trunks—which, unfortunately, often attracted burglars. Master trunk maker, Louis Vuitton sought to help his clients protect the goods inside their travel pieces.
In 1886, father and son, Georges, adopted a single lock system with two spring buckles. After several years of development, George patented this revolutionary system and it was so effective, he challenged Harry Houdini, the great American escape artist, in a public newspaper to escape from a Vuitton box and lock. Houdini didn’t rise to the challenge, but the lock’s effectiveness is indisputable. It is still used today.
Carried by the likes of Paul Poiret, Dora Maar, and Francis Picabia, LV luggage was not only a status symbol but also a practical purchase: Its trunks were - and still are - waterproof to prevent accidental damage to the items inside. They first appeared in the LV monogram pattern in 1896.
Louis Vuitton, the founder of the famous Vuitton house died on 27 February 1892. His travel trunks were praised for their solidity and practicality. "This great French factory is a glory of our country.” declared the obituary of Le Figaro at the time. Shops were opened in London, New York and Philadelphia. When Louis Vuitton died, his son Georges took over and made this beautiful house prosper. It is to him that Louis Vuitton owe the now emblematic monogram canvas, a bold print to deter imitation.

“Uh, thanks…” Bobbie took the makeshift umbrella and examined it a bit closer. It wasn’t pretty and it didn’t seem especially waterproof, but Samson could probably workshop the design a bit. “It’s not the, uh, water that’s the problem, though. Something about how the air pressure changes just… really digs in and makes your bones feel broken again.”

🐸🐸🐸 I’m going to a Jim Henson traveling exhibit tomorrow and I need fun facts to entertain my family with
!!! thats so exciting have fun!
🐸: this isn't a very obscure fact, but kermit was originally just made from jim's mother's felt coat and a pingpong ball that was cut in half 🐸: there's a scene in great muppet caper where piggy does synchronized swimming, which required specially built piggys that would be waterproof (she's a flocked puppet, so, like, covered in fuzz, and the flocking would dissolve in the water so they had to engineer a way to do that) while still easy to puppeteer. this required nearly 30 piggy heads , because her heads would break if frank oz opened her mouth too wide, and 7 different bodies. because it was such a pain to figure out how to make these waterproof puppets, the damaged piggy heads got fuckin, viciously destroyed by the workshop folks who had designed her, as like a catharsis thing. 🐸: the original gonzo was designed with these very sad droopy eyes, which is how dave goelz played him. goelz was also brand new to puppetry, and put some of his anxieties about not knowing what he was doing into gonzo in the first season of muppets. because of this, gonzo was kind of a sad boring little guy UNTIL towards the end of season one gonzo had to shout "no" at something. jim kept telling dave he needed to yell louder, bigger, etc, until eventually gonzo found his voice by screaming "NNNNNOOO!" and thats how they figured out who gonzo was :)
