Multiple demands for sweeping change (WSJ) It is impossible to draw neat lines connecting the unrest that is spanning the globe. But the fact that people have poured into the streets in so many places--often sharing tactics and even slogans--has given the turmoil the contours of a new social movement, echoing past upheavals such as the Arab Spring and the student protests of 1968. The immediate sparks vary from country to country. But underlying the unrest are an often similar mix of social and economic discord helping fuel demands for sweeping changes to the existing political order.
Robots go to school (MIT Technology Review) Alphabet X, the company’s early research and development division, has unveiled the Everyday Robot project, whose aim is to develop a “general-purpose learning robot.” The idea is to equip robots with cameras and complex machine-learning software, letting them observe the world around them and learn from it without needing to be taught every potential situation they may encounter. The early prototype robots are learning how to sort trash. It sounds mundane, but it’s tough to get robots to identify different types of objects, and then how to grasp them. Alphabet X claims that its robots are currently putting less than 5% of trash in the wrong place, versus an error rate of 20% among the office’s humans.
A coming tidal wave of homes hitting the market (WSJ) The U.S. is at the beginning of a tidal wave of homes hitting the market on the scale of the housing bubble in the mid-2000s. This time it won’t be driven by overbuilding, easy credit or irrational exuberance, but by an inevitable fact of life: the passing of the baby boomer generation. One in eight owner-occupied homes in the U.S., or roughly nine million residences, are set to hit the market from 2017 through 2027 as the baby boomers start to die in larger numbers, according to an analysis by Issi Romem conducted while he was a senior director of housing and urban economics at Zillow. That is up from roughly 7 million homes in the prior decade. By 2037, one quarter of the U.S. for-sale housing stock, or roughly 21 million homes will be vacated by seniors. That is more than twice the number of new properties built during a 10-year period that spanned the last housing bubble.
Colombia president orders curfew in capital following unrest (AP) Colombian President Iván Duque ordered a curfew in the nation’s capital Friday amid continuing unrest following a massive march a day before that brought tens of thousands to the streets in a strong message of rejection against his conservative government. The president said he was invoking the rarely used measure to contain ongoing clashes between police and demonstrators in the city of 7 million, shortly after officers pushed back thick crowds of protesters banging pots and pans in the storied Plaza Bolivar.
Tens of thousands march in France to condemn domestic violence (Reuters) Tens of thousands of people took the streets of Paris and other French cities on Saturday to protest against domestic violence, after more than 130 women are believed to have been killed by their partner or ex-partner in France this year.
Delhi’s water safe? (London Times) Delhi’s tap water has been declared unsafe to drink as politicians vie for control of the Indian capital in state elections dominated by a pollution crisis. The city is not only the most polluted capital on earth, but its residents are drinking the unsafest water in the country, a government report said. That is contradicted by local officials, including Arvind Kejriwal, the city’s chief minister, who claimed that its water was cleaner than any in Europe. His rivals have challenged him to serve unfiltered tap water at civic events. Roughly 20 million people live in Delhi. It is the world’s fifth-most populous city.
Hong Kong’s clouds of tear gas spark health panic (Reuters) Hong Kong residents have become distracted this week by fears of dioxin poisoning, as worry grows about the effects of about 10,000 rounds of tear gas fired across the financial hub over more than five months of anti-government protests. Many people are steering clear of fresh fruit and vegetables and warning family and friends to wait a week before eating anything that might have been exposed to the gas that has shrouded various neighborhoods at times over the months.
Pope denounces ‘evil’ of nukes as he fulfills Japan dream (AP) Pope Francis denounced the “evil” of nuclear weapons on Saturday as he began a three-day visit to Japan and fulfilled a dream to be a missionary in a land with a rich but bloody Christian past. The pope’s plane landed in the rain in Tokyo, where he received a small welcome at the airport before heading to the Vatican residence to meet with Japanese bishops. Streets near the residence were lined with smiling well-wishers holding umbrellas. One group held a banner that read: “Gracias! We love you.”
A Chinese spy in Australia (SMH) A Chinese spy has risked his life to defect to Australia and is now offering a trove of unprecedented inside intelligence on how China conducts its interference operations abroad. Wang “William” Liqiang is the first Chinese operative to ever blow his cover. He has revealed the identities of China’s senior military intelligence officers in Hong Kong, as well as providing details of how they fund and conduct political interference operations in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia. Mr Wang has taken his material to Australia’s counter-espionage agency, ASIO, and is seeking political asylum--potentially opening another front in Australia’s challenging bilateral relationship with China. A sworn statement Mr Wang provided ASIO in October states: “I have personally been involved and participated in a series of espionage activities”. He faces certain detention and possible execution if he returns to China.
Lebanon’s Financial Crisis (Washington Post) Over recent weeks, ATMs in Lebanon have been spitting back bank cards, refusing to provide dollars to those who ask for them, though people here have long used the American currency alongside the Lebanese pound. Dollars have virtually disappeared. Panicked tenants have begun asking to pay their rent in pounds, but landlords are refusing to accept them as the local currency hemorrhages value. Some restaurants and bars have stopped taking credit cards, instead requiring cash to pay vendors. Other eateries have limited their menus, unable to pay for imported goods in dollars. Lebanon is facing not just political turmoil, with daily protests across the country, but a financial emergency as well.
Landslides kill at least 36 people as heavy rains lash northwestern Kenya (Reuters) At least 36 people, including seven children, have been killed by landslides triggered by unusually heavy rains in northwestern Kenya, a local official said on Saturday.
Plane crashes in eastern DR Congo with about 17 passengers on board (Reuters) A passenger plane with about 17 passengers on board crashed on Sunday in the city of Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, killing several people, the provincial governor’s office said.

Japan & Japanese through my eyes........
I wish to give you a brief background of my association with Japan & Japanese. It began in 1975 when I worked for Engineers India Ltd. in New Delhi. I was part of a project management team to look after a petrochemical project called “Acrylic Fiber” at IPCL, Baroda. The process technology came from Asahi Chemical and Front-End Engineering was carried out by Kobe Steel. They had deputed a full time Japanese at EIL office.
Next association was in 1980-81 when I took a field engineer job withToyo Engineering at Basra, Iraq. For about 15 months, my immediate bosses were Japanese, though there were many Indians on site.
My close and strong association was from 1984 to 87 when I was a project manager and managed a collaboration with Chiyoda Corporation of Japan to execute an EPC project at NFL, Guna.
I along with my family moved to Yokohama, as Chiyoda Corp. offered me a direct employment. My office and my daughter’s school were also in Yokohama.
I again had a chance to work with Japanese when Chiyoda set up a joint venture with L&T called L&T –Chiyoda at Baroda in the 90’s.
Lastly, I was asked to manage Chiyoda’s liaison office at Bangalore for two years in 2012-14.
I will segregate my observations in two parts- one from the people and another from the country. Most people know of the punctuality of Japanese and discipline at workplace Hence, I will not dwell on these.
Most Japanese are concerned and sensitive of the discomfort or needs of fellow person. You can see that a Japanese not only picks up used plates and tray with trash in a McDonald’s but also wipes the table. You observe that a mother carries two types of napkins – one wet and another dry- when she takes her kid(s) out to play in the public garden. She cleans the child’s dirty hands with wet and then with clean napkin so that it does not dirty the rails or seats of the garden. Even in 90’s I saw Japanese wearing mask when they suffered from cough and cold. It was a common sight to see the dog owner carrying a paper bag and some broom to pick up poop.
Japanese people do not commit petty crimes or cheat which makes life so stress free and safe. My wife used to leave the apartment door open to go shopping nearby for 30 to 45 minutes. She learnt of this practice from neighbours. Initially we used to keep the money in our palm and the shop keeper would take the appropriate amount. All the shops-small or big – always charged us the VAT, whether we wanted a receipt of not. First time in my life I was offered a printed receipt of fare charged by a metered taxi without asking.
Japanese introduced us to see the beauty in the nature. The first time in our life we went to the mountains to see the autumn colours. There were conducted tours for local people to come to the mountains and soak in the beauty of the shades of colours from green to golden. We were also witness to the fire which is light up to dry leaves/grass on the mountain sides. The fire is light and controlled to spread in artistic way and you watch it from across the valley. Another experience was of hot (sulfur) springs in the mountains near Tokyo (Hakone). Our company guesthouse had a huge pond kind of hot water spot where natural spring was brought in. We soaked in this pond in the Japanese way-no clothes and separate areas for women and men. In five-star resorts, one could soak in the hot spring and sip from a glass of beer.
Japanese were also very health conscious. Our office had an indoor all weather Olympic size swimming pool and full-fledged gym with an instructor. Some of my colleagues were using this during lunch time before eating lunch. I used the facility on weekends. I went to a gym first time in my life and swam when there was almost zero-degree centigrade ambient temperature outside.
Japanese also retained some of “Indian” habits which may have reached them through Buddhism. Outdoor footwear cannot be used indoor whether in the residence or Japanese restaurants. We must leave outdoor footwear at the door and use in house slippers to go in. Most Japanese prefer to sit cross legged and ladies in Vajrasan. They do not shake hands or hug when the meet but bow and greet. Most prefer to sleep on the ground on a mattress rather than a western bed.
Japanese also have found ways to de-stress after an incredibly stressful office or factory workday. Karaoke bars are popular and now world famous. The normal bars without karaoke are also popular. They had huge halls with “ball” machines when they play a special game with stakes to lose or win, like what we played as a child. They also enjoy comics and there are comics to entertain all age groups.
Japan as a country is different from India. India is heterogeneous whereas Japan was homogeneous. This one feature made a lot of difference. They had only ten public holidays every year. Japanese was the main language for locals and it was developed to ensure that students get the latest information also. Japanese language also brings a very peculiar character to the people. The language has three alphabets-Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. Kanji has no letters but only Chinese characters/pictures. There are over few thousand kanjis and a child takes more than 8 yrs to know them all though only a few hundred Kanji is extensively used. To write Kanji one must be precise and take care of the different strokes. This focus on details and accuracy is reflected in everything they do in my opinion.
The police in Japan were extremely helpful and friendly. On two occasions I got their help. Once I was lost in the central Tokyo area and I went to the police station. The policeman there came with me to show me the address. On another occasion, my family and me went to meet my friend but my Casio watch, which had his telephone no. ran out of battery and I was lost. I again went to police station near the rail station. He permitted to call my office to find out the contact no. of my friend (office colleague) but the office security refused. Then he opened the area map with names of the residents, and we located two Tanaka-san. I dialed the first one and fortunately he was my friend. In India, such help was unthinkable, going to the Police station for common man for help is a far cry!
I came across some interesting leave/holidays rule. Most Japanese joined a company for a lifetime and the company was expected to take care of the individual. After about 20 yrs. of service (mid-way I guess) the employee get paid leave (about 6 weeks) and a huge payment (app. one year salary). He is expected to enjoy with his family and many of colleagues went to Europe, USA or Latin America for two to three weeks with family.
I was happily surprised that most school students including my daughter walked to the school. My daughter walked about 20 minutes each way, there were volunteers on the route to guide the school kids. No school bus or parents driving to drop or pick-up kids.
For common people, the basic unwritten rule was- provide goods and services which are high quality and reliable. All public phones (as the world was not exposed to internet or mobile phones at the time) were in working order with coins or prepaid cards for both domestic and international calls. Such phones were plenty and located at all convenient locations like rail stations, supermarkets and including lift lobbies in office buildings. ATM rooms of banks had ATM machines for withdrawal and transfer facility. There were two other machines-passbook printing and change dispensing. ATM rooms were open 24x7. Japan was most known for vending machines- variety and exceptionally reliable. Vending machines would dispense soft drinks, beer, hot and cold coffee, tea, small snacks packets etc. These machines would not be out of stock and returned change.
Japan acts in unison for trade/commerce without side world. Immediately after WWII, their economy was shattered but soon they got on their feet. The five trade houses –Sumitomo, Mitsui, Marubeni, C Itoh and Mitsubishi- were the marketing agents for both import and export. The manufacturers were concentrating on design, engineering, and quality products. This brought down costs. The trade houses would bring enquiries and orders. They will also take care of payments. Each manufacturer will join a trade house so that there is no competition among the trade houses.
As a country, I saw Japan converting research output in other countries to application/products for common use. The classic example was digital watch from Texas Instrument to Casio. Another could be Video players. Even some collaborations were made successful and eventually did better than the collaborators. The classic example is of Toyota Car Co which had started with GM collaboration 1950s.
In all the efforts of private sector in commerce the Govt played a particularly important and positive role. The banks were ready to help exporters/vendors with five-month credit as L/C or other kind of payments after shipment may take 3 months.
I hope you like what I have scribbled above as much as I loved it writing.

Warning: this post is LONG!
We had one more day in Jaipur before flying to Delhi, but had decided to check into the nicest hotel we could find for one night and just recover from everything up to that point! That’s a thing that Steven and I have always done when we backpack, just to give ourselves a little break from roughing it, so he treated us to a nice night of relaxing and recharging! (Such a good boyfriend, right??) Little did we know it was going to come at a time when we needed it more than anything! So....
We booked a night in the Radisson, and had planned to head there as early as we were allowed, to really bask in our comfort for the 24 hours we had! Sydney still wanted to try and find some blue and white pottery, as we had heard Jaipur was a good place for that, so we asked Bablu if he could take us somewhere the next morning to take a look, and then he could drive us to our hotel. After we stopped at the pottery store he took us to, he asked if we had time to visit a textile store… we really loved Bablu, and figured that if we went, he would get paid in someway, or just seem like a general hero to the storeowners, so we agreed because we still had a bit of time. When we first got there, things were pretty quiet because of it being a Sunday. The usual hustle and bustle of the factory takes a break on Sundays, said the owner. But he showed us the factory of the block printing they do, and let us try it out too - he even gave us our own block prints that we made during the mini tour! He then led us into the “showroom” where we knew exactly what to expect… the usual textile presentation of all the bed covers, quilts, and scarves. He first offered us chai tea, and we politely said no thank you. Then he basically told us that he is only happy when he can make up happy with tea, so we said “yes” because we really didn’t want to be rude. When he handed us the glasses of tea, without even thinking, I took a sip and was surprised at how delicious it was! I  kind of kept sipping before it dawned on me that I really had no idea where the water came from…. so… once that concept solidified itself in my head, I started feeling kind of sick. OF COURSE, I thought. The ONE TIME I let my guard down!! I checked with Sydney, knowing that if I was sick, she would be too, and she was feeling fine, so we both decided it was all in my head and I was basically making myself feel sick. Likely true.
When we started looking at the quilts, we realized that we’d hit the jackpot in terms of the style we’d been looking for.. he had SO MANY different ones, and some of the nicest we’d seen up to this point. I should point out that I had already bought an indigo block dyed quilt in Jodhpur, but I could feel myself getting excited at what I was seeing and I knew I wouldn’t really be able to control myself. So once I confirmed with Sydney that she had room to carry not only hers, but a 2nd one of mine in her backpack, it was basically a done deal.
We both found quilts that we really liked.. but I was feeling guilty about buying a 2nd one so I kind of took a back seat when the bartering started. He started out pretty close to around 5,000 rps, which we knew we’d never pay. We were aiming for about half of that.. so when he wouldn’t go much lower on Sydney’s quilt, she kind of said no thank you.. and then when I asked about cushion covers, he lured us over to another room where he told me to choose any fabric I wanted, and they’d have it made and delivered to my hotel for me! I started looking through fabrics and chose one I liked, and a man ran into the back with it before I really knew what had happened. Then the man started working on Sydney again for her quilt.. after much back and forth, and me agreeing to also buy one (oops!) we told him we only had 5000 rps in cash, between the 2 of us, so it was 2 for that price, or nothing. He then told us he couldn’t go that low, and we kept saying that we’d have to pay by card, and he kept telling us that the card machines don’t work on Sundays. So after he agreed to let us pay the 5000 cash we had, we realized we didn’t actually have that much on us…. haha. So then we said he HAD to pay cash, or pay about 4000 rps for the 2, because it’s all we had. He was clearly SO IRRITATED with us, and things got super awkward and uncomfortable.. and then he told us that we could pay by card if we had to.. which then made us feel even sketchier about the whole thing because he’d just clearly lied and told us the machines weren’t working when they, in fact, were. So when he took us into this other room to a table where another man sat with a portable card machine, we realized this was also a bad idea.. and we were completely uncomfortable with swiping our cards in the backroom textile shop where our cards were almost certainly going to get stolen. So then we told him we didn’t want to use cards.. and at that point I think steam came out of his ears. After ALL THE AWKWARDNESS in the world, and him trying to make us feel bad, and us just saying no.. he said that we could give him what we had on us now in cash, and then Bablu would take us to an ATM to get out money and we could give the rest to him to drop off at the shop later. This really seemed like a good deal, and at that point we needed to get the #### out of there before someone lost a life, so we agreed and hustled out! Only to realize that we’d forgotten our block printing samples in the commotion of the quit debacle…
If you can’t believe there’s more, there is…
We got in the tuk tuk and Bablu drove us to the Radisson because I assumed there would be a trusted ATM there. When we got in the lobby and dropped our bags (after having to walk from the street because Bablu was stopped at the entrance and told tuk tuks weren’t allowed to come in! haha) , we were informed there was no ATM. This is when things got a bit stressful.. because Bablu was literally waiting on the street for us. So one of the men from the hotel said he would escort us to a walkable ATM to take out money.. which felt sketchy in itself. We walked to this kind of weird ATM machine, where I saw a few people around looking at us interestingly.. and tried to take out money with our Thai cards. NOPE. Not only did it say no - it said that I had reached my daily limit, even though I had taken out nothing. So that was concerning, but we just had to keep moving because Bablu was waiting! So we then walked back to the hotel and the guy told Bablu where there was another ATM across the highway. He drove us there only to find a big gate chained shut infront of it.. I think we were both totally unsure what to do at this point. Bablu just kept slowly driving around, and find this weird looking ATM booth so we got out to try. While we were inside, I saw a man walk up to Bablu and start talking to him, while looking at us, and I was pretty sure that he was going to pay Bablu to take us. It was going to be exactly like on Taken, except where we just get kidnapped and that’s the end of the movie. I was staring them down pretty hard while Sydney tried to get money, and when she finally got her card to work, we calm got into the tuk tuk like everything was fine and luckily, Bablu drove away! Yeesh. As much as I loved India to death, there were so many moments like this that made me sure I was about to fight for my life.  Luckily, it was usually just me being paranoid.

NDM-1 Remote Machine Monitoring & Maintenance System   Superbug Discovered in a Cat in the USA
www.inhandnetworks.com
The Indian superbug NDM-1, which has a gene that encodes an enzyme conferring resistance to almost all known antibiotics, has been found in the USA in a household cat.
Pets with NDM-1 could be a dangerous vector of infection, since people have close contact with them. The finding was announced by Rajesh Nayak, a research scientist at the FDA’s National Center for Toxicological Research in Jefferson, Arka industrial transport  nsas. The gene, blaNDM, was fo low-cost LTE router und in isolates of E. coli that they had received as part of a project to study bacterial samples from veterinary laboratories all over the USA.
NDM-1 was first identified in 2008 in Sweden, in a man of Indian origin who had gone home to India, was hospitalized, recovered and then was hospitalized once again in Sweden. The Klebsiella discovered in his urine was resistant to a vast number of drugs, including some last-resort category drugs known as carbapenems. It was susceptible to only two drugs, one old and toxic. The other was new, but not effective in all tissues of the patient’s body.
In 2009, bacteria containing the NDM-1 gene, traveling on plasmids that can easily move between organisms, were found in the UK. NDM-1 was first found in the USA in 2010, in three residents living in three different states.
Almost all of the patients had ties to India or Pakistan. Since then, research has shown that the organisms containing the gene weren’t confined to hospitals, but were circulating widely in New Delhi transformer monitoring  , India, through the water supply and other vectors of infection. NDM-1 has spread to over 12 countries so far.
The actual cat that has the NDM-1 is unknown, as veterinarians collected the samples whenever pets were not feeling well as part of the initial project. The samples were collected between 2008 and 2009, making the timing somewhat perplexing. It was collected at the same time as the earliest recognition of the resistance factor in Europe, nearly a year before it was detected in the US.
