Something I've been thinking about is how Patrick O'Brian manages so skillfully to write characters whose actions contradict their beliefs, which I think is honestly a big part of why his characters feel so real. Mostly with Stephen and Jack—e.g., and perhaps most notably, Stephen has notably leftist sympathies (honestly I have no idea how to characterize his politics in period terms) who nonetheless becomes very comfortable with his rise to the landed gentry, while Jack is a card-carrying Tory who much of the time sympathizes far more with working class sailors and farmers than with the upper classes—but I'm sure he does it to a lesser degree with some of his minor characters (James Dillon, while perhaps not precisely minor, comes to mind), and I love that he's able to do that, especially the way in which he embeds it in the narrative. We see how they're all unreliable narrators of themselves; we understand how they want to be seen and how that does and doesn't coincide with the reality, but most importantly, this isn't presented as something reprehensible, just as a part of their own humanity. They are not their expectations for themselves, but they don't need to be those expectations to be beloved.
#stephen is especially guilty of this and i think it's very interesting how he thinks of himself versus how he acts#which is probably an essay on its own#but i do think that this is another point he and jack make a fun foil on#(for jack this manifests much less explicitly but i think it's definitely still there)#i can't think of other characters atm besides james dillon#(who okay. his actions don't contradict his beliefs exactly but there is a weird and complex relationship between them)#though i do suspect that there are probably more#idk i've been thinking about this a lot because o'brianizing hornblower has brought to the forefront#how different those two authors treat internal/external narratives#patrick o'brian is kind of like yeah they don't really line up but that's okay that's just what it's like to be a person#while for hornblower and cs forester it's like the internal narrative is so unbelievably unreliable and negative#but the external narrative also seems to be resoundingly positive#(which is probably why. in my humble opinion having watched two episodes of it. the tv show is much more Fun)#writing hornblower in o'brian format is just like wow there is no weirdness going on did i write him wrong#but no it's hornblower he just sounds so much more normal without the 24/7 mental gymnastics#perce rambles#aubreyad#The Creative Endeavor and other aubreyad nonsense

I think the wildest thing about how I’m watching Transformers rn is finding out how late in the franchise some really core lore elements got introduced. Like, wtf do you mean they invented the AllSpark as a source for cybertronian life for the fucking live action movies. HUH?????? What do you mean sparks weren’t a thing in the original series????
#lunar lullabies#tf#i’m effectively going in reverse release order of major shows atm#prime>earthspark>cyberverse>animated>beast wars>g1#gonna watch some other shows from inbetween these after g1#like the anime trilogy that looks deranged#i forgot the name of it#and maybe rescue bots (academy) but that one looks a lil too kid friendly#also maybe rid 2015 though i got bored last time i started watching that

Stargate SG-1 is so good. I love it so much 🥺
#might spam you over the week. i think i'll use it to get a distance from snw for a while#i mean i'll watch the kirk-uhura episode on friday but maybe kirk will disappoint me and since the episode after is the xover#i might just... wait until the season is finished or something#(i mean i don't think kirk will disappoint me since the bits in the trailers sounded good... but you never know lol)#it's not that season 2 is bad but i want less spock and i don't think that's happening any time soon#hopefully he won't really have a big role in uhura's episode but then again they might finally introduce him and uhura and the lute who even#knows#which is obviously what i have wanted ever since the announcement but me and spock have a complicated relationship atm lol#i should forget about spock#i hope the transporter scene with kirk and la'an is happening#i hope that kirk's smile when he beams aboard is aimed at la'an#even if that was the only scene they'd share in that episode i'd be content#but the trailer could lie to me#even though so far the trailers actually delivered what was 'promised'#in s1 they felt more misleading but this time what i thought was happening in the trailers happened in the show so far#anyway#stargate is good :D#leni's nonsense

I will say, as much as I enjoyed Dragons Rising there is one thing that's been bothering me. And that's how absent Jay has been.
Like for season one it was fine and even made sense, even after the Agent Walker Reveal. His absense was very noticable, at least for me, which kept me wondering where the heck he was. And then he's revealed which makes for a great unanswered "wait. WHAT???".
But then...season two rolls around. And he's revealed. And then he's gone. Again. All within an episode or two. Like he was just thrown in for a quick surprise and set up for the side plot next season and that's it.
I definitely wasn't expecting any further answers about him this season, not when the plot was focused on something else atm. But idk. I wish they'd maybe let us see him be a part of Ras's group before revealing him to the ninja, or had him be revealed to the ninja but not have him fight Nya until a few episodes later. Something that builds some tension and establishes a new dynamic between him and other characters instead of getting that part of the plot done as quick as possible.
#I am leaving room for this to be fixed in future seasons though. Maybe its just a problem that exists because of where the story is at rn#or something#I mean obvs they're setting him up to be important to the plot again soon. Given both Nya and prolly Arin are going to be looking for him.#Also I recognize that this is ninjago. I'm not trying to demand masterful writing from a lego show with a record#Outside of all this though I def enjoyed both seasons. There's just something...lackluster abt Jay atm#ninjago#ninjago spoilers#ninjago dragons rising#Aries posts#Ninjago dragons rising spoilers#might delete later#Aries watches dragons rising

so i maaaaaay have fallen deep into spirk suddenly 👉👈 without warning i don't even know how i got here sent help
#havoc updates#no i am no kidding#no worries! this will pass though! i won't forget the other stuff i've been working on. this is just a pattern with me#did not predict this out of all things would happen though#it's not like i'm only now into this btw as i watched the show as a kid. grew up with it even though i had no media literacy at all#everything flew over my head. probably cus it's dialogue heavy and subtext wasn't even close to being in my vocabulary#it's just so strange tho cus it's not like i'm even THAT into it but the old man yaoi's now got me on a bit of a choke hold rn#like damn it! they easily fit in the dynamics i like with characters. they also just have such immaculate dialogue together. peak material#i yearn to write characters with that level of chemistry#also a part of my soul yearns to draw fanart but also like... what would i draw? just them holding hands?? maybe???#i mean... there's no harm in it but also i'm so shy about it atm -///- i've never drawn these two losers before and i'm nervous!!#also it just hit me that all my other interests are either games or animated and this is the only life action show out of them all#think i'm also unsure what to due cus it's been ages since i've touched the franchise as a whole and i'd have to do SO much catch up T-T#the most i remember is that i watched the stuff but not the nitty gritty. also my brain is a bit occupied hyperfocusing on another franchis#soooo yeah... that doesn't help at all. darn you brain! why can't you just hyperfocus on more than one thing at a time!#and why must you suddenly hyperfocus on one thing for a week or a whole month before going back to the same old ;-;#gosh. am blabbering so hard rn. my bad#no clue what this post even is#hope my incoherent ramblings were entertaining for those who read this far :D

Should I watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia???
oh boy okay...
its a great show but you have to remember that its from 2005, about terrible people doing terrible things.. some jokes r taken too far and arent the.. greatest, lets say
but in all honesty i do think you should watch it, it may take a season or two to get into (< ive seen a few ppl say this) but its really great,, the characters have a lot more to them if u actually pay attention n shit, youve got 16 going to be 17 seasons to watch so theres a lot to watch, etcetc
js keep in mind that its a satirical show about bad ppl and ur good i think!
#its a great show u js gotta watch it like a queer autistic person and not a dudebro#i feel like im making the show sound horrible i js dont want someone to get pissed if they hate the show#ive also been hyper fixated on other things atm so i was struggling to figure out how to word everything#i THINK katie (pariskim) has answered smt like this?? i could be wrong though#ANWAYS yes go watch it its such a good show#ghost talks

my sister is currently doing her nightly *douse myself in water for 5 mins despite it leaving PUDDLES EVERYWHERE BTW and then spend 20 mins applying imported skincare i spent all my money on* in SILENCE sans any form of music meanwhile she walked in on me having a party of one (1) at myself in the bathroom mirror to set it off of all things. it's a bit funny that we are related by blood
#she just looked at me with my hands still doing some dumb dance gesture and went 'what.... are you doing' SO UNIMPRESSED LIKE#mortifying but i had fun. was literally just jamming for a good 20 mins like acting out every song in the mirror#not even taking my make up off or anything like that no just pure vibing. and i think im in the right here#and then she spends a MINIMUM half hour EVERY NIGHT on skincare which is fine i WISH i had that dedication#but she does it IN SILENCE I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW WE'RE RELATED#my sister: even though im writing my thesis atm for my masters in chemistry im still excited for my dentistry degree i just got accepted on#me earlier today to my mum: LETS SEE IF I CAN FAIL MACROECONOMICS THREE YEARS RUNNING <3333#it's a bit funny it's a BIT funny#we are just such different people in EVERY facet of our lives even the tiny things idk IT'S A BIT FUNNY#can u see how i got the shit kicked out of me from watching fleabag. can you see it#we did however sit on the sofa together just now and i was lying on it first#but she wanted to show me a dress so she came over and i didnt want to get up so i lifted my legs as a joke#expecting her to be like 'sod off and make room' but she literally just scooted under and had my legs on her lap and her arms on my legs#and yes it's v casual v mundane but we've never really... had that? like we are NOT physically affectionate at all#we're not affectionate FULL STOP let alone physically#idk it was nice. i was hyperaware of literally every single part of me bc it's still so new but. it was nice#i used to get really hung up on our differences but now i do genuinely find it funny more often than not#('used to' i mean last year. literally a few months ago. we move)#hella goes home

Finished the live action avatar
It’s not a perfect adaptation, I think the biggest thing is they have taken a lot of the fun out of it, Aang doesn’t wanna go do kid stuff, Iroh is way more serious, BUT I don’t necessarily blame like the series itself as much as I blame the current state of tv being in constraints of like 8 episodes and wanting people to binge it in the first few days and everything.
I hope they let Azula be as scary as possible next season, I think they just wanted her introduced a bit earlier since everyone was gonna be waiting for it, I hope they let Iroh chill out a bit more, but in general from my point of view if you see people bashing this series with as much vitriol as the movie then they’re being super dramatic. There are parts that could absolutely be better but like I said those issues go hand in hand with issues with all of tv right now. I think it’s decent at least, I know it’s a beloved series but some people are being HARSH
#bring back filler and characters just hanging out#and stop expecting people to watch shit in the first 30 seconds before you cancel it#for reference I think it’s a better adaptation than the new Percy Jackson tbh#same kinda vibes in the exposition dumps and kinda treating the audience like idiots but avatar just slightly bumps above percy for me#other minor issues are the acting at times but some of those times are literal children#a lot of people seem pissed at the zuko portrayal but season one zuko is dramatic af a lot of the time#and I think Dallas Liu just turned that up a bit and made him angrier which I’m not mad at#I wish katara was a little snarkier I saw someone mention her rage being kind of hamstrung and they were kinda right#it’s not entirely gone but it’s not there as much as I’d like#cgi is kinda whack at times too but that’s everything atm as well not avatar specific#the martial arts pretty good too esp fire bending they still clearly took from Shaolin kinda styles#I do wish they’d speed aang up a bit though#both in general but also stop using slow mo when he’s doing shit#anyway#I’m not super mad at it#if they don’t fuck up toph and do some better characterising of azula and iroh we might actually see it to the end#and some more episodes for like actual development but I feel like that’s wishful thinking with Netflix rn#even like 10-12 would be better and then sokka could’ve had his development with the Kyoshi warriors#and aang can show more of his reluctance and fear because he’s a twelve year old pacifist#avatar#avatar the last airbender#avatar live action#atla

So I've been replaying the Alan Wake series and its connected games in preparation for playing Alan Wake 2 and I just felt like putting down my thoughts on Alan Wake and American Nightmare down. Nothing too intensive, just some random thoughts and critic I've had about them. Spoilers for those two 10+ year old games below. It's also long so, like, be aware of that lol.
Alan Wake:
God this game shows its age lol. It's such an XBox 360 game. Like you know the devs were super, super proud of their physics system when they made the game 'cause physics objects are everywhere and they really want you to play with them.
This is one of the most "wears its influences on its sleeves" horror games and unlike most of those it's mostly not based on Lovecraft (though it is partially). It's goddamn Steven King.
The combat is really barebones, but at the same time really tight. It works suprising well and hasn't aged too badly. Like shit maybe it's the sound taken make when you kill them but it's super satisfying to shot shit in this game. The poltergeist encounters can be a little annoying at times though and the fast Taken are always a slog unless they get stuck on a corner or something.
I always really liked the narrative devices of the manuscript pages. Giving the player a chance to see what's going on off screen or getting glimpses into the inner worlds of your nonpoint-of-view characters if they're diligent about exploring your world is such a fun idea. It's something you don't get to see in video games often but do see a lot in literature, so it fits very well here. Not to mention letting the player see glimpses of the near future is fun as well.
The DLC chapters are really funny conceptually because you know they spawned out of someone saying "Hey, you know that gimmick mechanic we had in literally the last five minutes of the game and nowhere else that we did nothing with? We should actually use that for something."
Also I do like how literally everything after the main story of Alan Wake is trying to resolve the resolution to Alan Wake. Like Alan did exactly what he needed to do to fix everything, but fuck it this man is really struggling to actually save himself from his own self sacrifice.
Alan Wake American Nightmare:
Once again, this game shows it's age. It's a very XBox 360 game, though the devs clearly put some thought into how to improve the original game's formula. Their conclusion was to make the combat quicker and more varied and I can't say they were wrong. I will say that the over abundance of ammo and ease of killing foes does make this a bit less scary though. This is much more of an action game than the original and the presence of an "arcade mode" makes me think that was the intention.
This is one of the better handled time loop stories I think I've seen. Though the duration of the loop is short, everyone involved quickly gets a grasp of what's happening and, suprising, they all are able to grow very competent. By the last loop, missions that took an entire act to finish are literally set up for you to complete when you enter the area. People learn from their mistakes and make sure not to make those mistakes again. It's such a pleasure to see people placed in this odd situation act like rational people.
The situation with Serena is super fucking unfortunate. Like, fuck. If you play this game, make sure to go turn on the light for her in the second and third loops. It's fully an unmarked optional event, but, like, fuck no one deserves that.
The ending is, annoyingly, a little misleading. Leading some people to see this game as non-canon. Like, I definitely get that but the post credits scene makes the situation a bit more clear... shame it's easy to accidentally skip tho. Cutscenes in general are too easy to accidentally skip in this game.
#alan wake spoilers#Alan wake#But not two I still haven't played two#I'm currently going through Control#I played that one before but never beat it#I think I got distracted by Persona 5 Royal when I played it before#I'm avoiding Quantum Break though#I don't feel like touching that atm#Maybe in the future but it seems like a bit of a hassle to watch a show and play a game concurrently
