JAPANESE DORAMA QUICK REVIEW/NOTES
I have done the movies list before and now I feel like how about the doramas hehe well anyway as always these are all my opinions, we all have different opinions so don’t take this too seriously. Doing this 4 dorama per post just like before with the movies.
Here we go~
ONNA JOUSHU NAOTORA | RATING: 10/10
- I've mentioned this before that I'm hopelessly obsessed with Suda Masaki which was the main reason I picked this up - Surprisingly I really got hooked with this, I don't usually watch lengthy dramas but wow I felt like I wanted more of this - This is the reason I started watching NHK dramas - I loved this so much after watching the whole series I became interested with the Ii clan and searched about them haha - The cast was great too!
SOREDEMO IKITE YUKU | RATING: 9/10
- This show was full of emotions, you can say its sad but its still close to reality I think - The ending was inevitable also I can not think of any other ending for this. If the leads ended up together I think its going to go against the whole series' point about repentance and forgiveness.
WATASHI GA RENAI DEKINAI RIYUU | RATING: 8.5/10
- 4 ladies, 4 different stories tied up as one through a common goal - I like the variety of the characters and how each was different even though they all are looking for love - Nothing too much here, not too cheesy, not too emotional just right
YUME WO ATAERU | RATING: 8.5/10
- I think this is Nana Komatsu's best portrayal. It was a character that is totally different to her usual roles and she still slayed it - Mackenyu dancing omg and her love scenes with Nana OMFG - The story is also nice and kind of leaves you with a question at the ending
>>>Check this tag for the movies and this one for the dorama

Heyyy
Can you recommend some romantic, feelgood jdramas with a happy ending from 2020-2021?
I think the only romcom I liked that aired in the past couple of years was Oh My Boss. But you'd probably want to check these out: - Watashi no Kaseifu Nagisa-san - Neechan no Koibito (my mom actually quite liked it) - Marry Me! - Kono Koi Atatamemasu ka - Shitteru Waifu - Uchi no Musume wa, Kareshi ga Dekinai!! - Renai Mangaka - Rikokatsu - Kikazaru Koi niwa Riyuu ga Atte

Drama’s can be one of the most enjoyable ways to practice your Japanese listening ability, expand your vocabulary, and understand Japanese language used in every-day situations. For those reasons and more, I present to you 5 of my favourite ‘vintage’ and easy to watch Japanese dramas!
5.電車男 [Densha Otoko] (Train Man)
youtube
Episodes: 11 Wiki: Link Year: 2005
So we start with one of the most popular Drama’s of all time in Japan. Densha Otoko (“Train Man”) tells the story of an Otaku who gets to know a beautiful woman on a train after attempting to rescue her from an attack. He posts about this relationship on a Japanese message board, and the drama centers around the advice he receives from the board’s users.
This drama is amazing and you will love it regardless of your interests. It’s wacky, cheesy, hilarious, but also sincere and there are some tear-jerking moments. Most of all, it shows human emotion in a lovely way. I have to warn you though, it’s a rollercoaster ride (train ride?) - your emotions will be up and down with each episode!
4. 結婚できない男 [Kekkon Dekinai Otoko] (The Man Who Can’t Marry)
youtube
Episodes: 12 Wiki: Link Year: 2009
Next we have a drama with another male protagonist, a 40-year old architect who can’t marry. Or rather, he doesn’t want to. The drama revolves around this man who prefers to be alone but is forced to make friendships and relationships with people around him.
I love Natsukawa Yui who plays the love interest in this drama, and the way the relationship between her and Kuwano (main guy) develops. This drama is really heartwarming and addictive, definitely worth a watch.
Note: trailer is for the second series, “The man who still can’t marry”, released this year!
3. 私が恋愛できない理由 [Watashi Ga Renai Dekinai Riyuu] (The Reason I Can’t Find My Love)
youtube
Episodes: 12 Wiki: Link Year: 2011
This is a different drama to the previous two, in that it revolves around 3 women. However, similarly they cannot find love. This is supposedly a common problem in Japanese society in general and is the topic of many dramas.
This is a great show about the friendships between modern working women who have trouble finding love.
2. 結婚しない [Kekkon Shinai] (I won’t Marry/Wonderful Single Life)
youtube
Episodes: 11 Wiki: Link Year: 2012
Another drama centering around being unable to find love, but I just loved this drama. The three main actors are great, I especially love Amami Yuki as the main actress (she also appears in BOSS, a good old drama), and Kanno Miho (main actress) is super cute.
1. TOKYOエアポート[TOKYO Ea-po-to] (TOKYO Airport)
youtube
Episodes: 10 Wiki: Link Year: 2012
Finally, my most favourite drama of the 2010′s. This takes a different genre to the other drama’s as it isn’t based on a love story but on the difficulties faced working as a newbie in the Tokyo Airport control tower.
I knew nothing about aeroplanes, airports or control towers or had any interest in them, but this is so beautifully filmed and well acted that I was actually really interested in it. The drama is great quality and still feels modern.

What a well constructed and intense drama that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Lee Je Hoon, Jo Jin Woong and Kim Hye Soo deliver such incredible portrayals. I can’t recommend this drama enough!
+ Falling for Innocence (2015) (9/10).
An interesting premise, where a manipulative business man gets a new heart. The symptoms that follow: strange memories, a change in habits and a strong gravitational pull to a particular woman.
+ Healer (2014) (10/10).
You just can’t get much cooler than Seo Jung Ho, bonefied errand boy, a good fighter, street smarts. You can’t get much better than Healer. It truly is the whole package: a bit of action, romance and good story-telling.

In this dark, gritty dog-eat-dog world, a suspended detective will pull together an unlikely team of ex-convicts.
+ Cruel City (2013) (10/10).
This drama is so beautifully dark and moody. The lead protagonist is so interesting and complex. His acting ability in this role is top-notch and truly makes the drama great.
JAPANESE.
+ Unnatural (2018)(9/10).
I didn’t expect to get sucked in so deep to this procedural. Ishihara Satomi and Iura Arata do a really amazing job.
+ Million Yen Women (2017) (9/10).
This drama has a bit of a darker, understated tone. I really enjoyed the mystery and learning more about the protagonist bit by bit.
+ Tokyo Tarareba Musume (2017)(9/10).
This drama delivers some touching life lessons about love. Focusing on three women in their 30s, this drama will delve into their love lives and their pursuit for happiness.
+ Ouroboros (2015) (9/10).

An interesting drama that follows four loosely connects women and their bouts with love and loss. An intriguing commentary on love and marriage in Japan.

A touching drama about friendship. This is such a classic!

Watashi ga Renai Dekinai Riyuu and Love Shuffle is interesting too (well, i've only seen one ep of the latter and near the end of the first, a bit cliche/cheesy but it's not super depressing/heavy compared to some of the more popular ones)
Watashi ga Renai Dekinai Riyuu looks like something I’d enjoy (I think I like the sort of focus on a group of characters and their relationships instead of more 1:1 straightforward romance)

Female friendships in Jdramas? Mondai no Aru Restaurant! That's the best example ever! Some other examples: Buzzer Beat, Pride, Love Revolution, Watashi ga Renai Dekinai Riyuu, Tokyo Tarareba Musume.
Those are good ones! I’ll admit though I haven’t seen all of those dramas… I guess I have a lot of watching to do! I also have Long Vacation, Totsuzen desuga ashita kekkon shimasu, Amachan, NigeHaji, Suika on my list just thinking off the top of my head. It’s great that we’re able to think of so many!

i saw your post and was curious, what other japanese dramas do you enjoy? any personal faves you would recommend? ^^
heya ^^ oh my, dear anon. you opened the box of the pandora. because even though i’ll just give you the list on top of my head this is going to be long orz
my favourite drama can be sorted in the following categories:
- ridiculous school drama (with occasional dash of romance) which i watched mostly in middleschool & highschool ®- slice of life drama with amazing houses, roommate shenanigans (S)- detective & crime drama with the occasional supernatural twist ©
(I will put a “holds up!” next to some older series which i’ve rewatched that are still great despite their age!)
. Gokusen, 2002 ®: the classic high-school delinquents meet a strong teacher and start to show their vulnerable side story. trope galore but it never gets old to see Yukie Nakama as Yankumi, grand-daughter of a Yakuza family beating the shit out of people. → holds up!
. Manhattan Love Story, 2003 (S): a gentleman of a barista starts to meddle in his customers lives so that they’ll finally get the time to appreciate his coffee. → holds up!
. Hana Yori Dango, 2005 (R): the classic. some parts are icky regarding the bullying but the most down-to-earth rendition of all the versions. → holds somewhat up!
. Kurosagi, 2006 (C): a swindler who swindles swindlers. besides the notorious Yamashita Tomohisa one of my favourite actors in his now 80s Yamazaki Tsutomu delivers a shakespearean performance. don’t remember much, only that Yamazaki Tsutomu is glorious.
. My Boss! My Hero!, 2006 (R:) a 27 year old yakuza heir has to go back and finish high school. some weird age-gap thing going on but it is freaking hilarious (the infamous pudding run scene). me and my friends are still singing the ending song during karaoke.
. Nodame Cantabile, 2006 ®: hilarious rom-com set in a music college
. Hotaru no Hikari, 2007 (S): the love story is not that important (even though I love the main female character) because the real star of the series is the house!
. Bloody Monday, 2008 ©: gruesome crime series with college kids helping in an investigation. Michiko Kichise as one of the policewomen is brilliant. i have a crush on her. Hiroki Narimiya is very hot in this, my bi heart is happy.
. Love Shuffle, 2009 (S/R) - 4 people living on the same floor of an apartment complex decide to swap partners “for science”. stellar cast with my crush Karina, Shota Matsuda and more. rare occurrence of a well written gay main character, Shosuke Tanihara is great in this. tw: one plotline starts very dark, featuring themes of depression & suicidal thoughts → holds up!
. BOSS, 2009 ©: not only does this drama have Michiko Kichise (s.o.) but it is headlined by Yuki Amami. my favourite female character in jdrama land. she is strong, intelligent, weird af, slightly older than the average jdrama heroine, has platonic friendships with very hot guys and is herself very hot. one gay side-character who is sadly written underwhelmingly. → holds up!
. MR.BRAIN, 2009 ©: neurologists gets added to a major crime devision. the science in this doesn’t hold up but the cases are pretty rad (especially the piano one, episode 4 I think?) → holds up!
. Otomen, 2009 ®: guy who enjoys female coded hobbies such as knitting and playing with dolls tries to keep up a manly facade in school. some nonsense but I still live for Asuka Masamune’s “female” side. sadly a gay sub-plotline that doesn’t get handled well.
. Tumbling, 2010 ®: bad boy & high-school delinquent Wataru Azuma (Yusuke Yamamoto) joins the male rhythmic gymnastic team of his school to impress his crush on the women’s team and to appease his teachers. discusses toxic masculinity in a great way and has a really good gay subplot (with Daito Shunsuke) (if i recall everything correctly). the cast actually learned rhythmic gymnastics for this and this level of care & passion shows. → holds up!
. Atami no Sousakan, 2010 ©: maybe my favourite japanese drama ever. with the brilliant Odagiri Joe & Chiaki Kuriyama who play two detectives that get send to the small town of Minami-Atami to support the local police in a mysterious case of a vanishing school bus when some of the missing school girls return to town. turns out that the case is weird but the town and its people are even weirder. (i have hardly laughed so hard when watching a tv series) → fucking holds up!
. Asuko March, 2011 ®: due to bad grades Nao Yoshino has to enter a technical highschool and finds herself surrounded by only boys. the romantic plot is average but some great plotlines about emancipation and femininity. and Emi Takei in a working overall handling tools =
. Arakawa Under The Bridge, 2011 (idek what genre this is): this drama is just weird af and for that sole reason worth a watch. the soundtrack is also great.
. Ouran Highschool Host Club, 2011 ®: this drama is pure camp, allures to some incesty/gay plotlines that are really not great when you think about it but its one of the best manga adaptations I know and just pure hilarity. also: Yusuke Yamamote is made for slapstick.
. Watashi ga Renai dekinai Riyuu, 2011 (S): again featuring my love Karina as a tomboy. fucking great portrayal of different kinds of women and their friendship plus a great house with roommate shenanigans and cooking. → holds up!
. Lucky Seven, 2012 ©: pretty standard detective drama but it features Eita and Nanako Matsushima as the female boss of the agency (who is another of my crushes)
. Switch Girl, 2012 (R): this drama is stupidly funny and while having a pretty traditional love story it features some nice thoughts on judging people by their appearance and beauty standards.
. Kagi no Kakatta Heya, 2012 ©: locked room mystery crime series.
. Soumato Kabushiki Gaisha, 2012 ©: a company that stores the film everyone sees before they die. the customers are able to watch their whole life on film, most of them discovering some very dark secrets about their lives. tw: suicide, abuse, generally quite heavy topics
. Toshi Densetsu no Onna, 2012 ©: a female detective connects her cases to mysterious urban legends to solve them. Masami Nagasawa’s outfits are the second star of the show.
. Biblia Koshodou no Jiken Techou, 2013 (C/S): mystery solving with the help of literature and placed in an old antique book store. what’s not to like.
. Yakou Kanransha, 2013 ©: two families living opposite of each other in an upscale neighborhood. one day a man is found murdered and everything is connected by a midnights ferries wheel.
. Summer Nude, 2013 (R/S): Karina (again! i love her) as a famous cook who has to rebuild her life in a coastal town after some hiccups in her personal life. food and a town at the beach with Karina playing another tomboy role. i love it.
. Mahoro Eki Mae Bangaichi, 2013 (C/S): Eita plays a problem solver for hire in a weird neighborhood featuring the eclectic Ryuhei Matsuda.
. River’s Edge Ookawabata Tanteisha, 2014 ©: aesthetic™ with my love Odagiri Joe.
. Gomen ne Seishun, 2014 (R/S): some catholic girls school vs boy school rivalry focused on the teachers with a mysterious case in the past. Hikari Mitsushima as the girl school’s teacher has amazing clothes.
. Koinaka, 2015 (R/S): two highschool sweethearts meeting again by chance. really quiet and sweet love story.
. Miss Sherlock, 2018 ©: a female sherlock. a female watson. solving crime. i wanted it to be more gay but the series is pretty solid. Yuko Takeuchi’s wardrobe is goals. also: Yuko Takeuchi is goals.
. What did you eat yesterday, 2019 (S): gay slice-of life series. still airing but so far I’m super happy. a couple in its 40s and their everyday life. food porn. also hilarious. (I might gif some more)
#ctlyuejie writes#REC!#longpost#long post#i def forgot a bunch#but i'm both amazed and frightend by myself for remembering this much#cutest anon alert#idek if anyone is going to bother to watch these :"D#btu you are always welcome to rave about these series to me (or complain)#especially what did you eat yesterday as it is currently airing

Jdrama Impressions: Watashi ga Renai Dekinai Riyuu (The Reason I Can't Find Love)
I love these kinds of dramas that are more realistic than the usual romantic dramas. It's easier to relate to the characters and these dramas always leave a much deeper impression on me.
Unrequited love, cheating, jealous lovers, finding your place in the world...
I highly recommend this drama. Except to Jenn excellentweaklings, cuz I know the contempt you have for Yoshitaka Yuriko, and her character would make you so mad. hahaha.

Watashi ga Renai Dekinai Riyuu (2011)
Something frivolous I learnt from this show: Oshima Yuko is really cute.
Something of importance I learnt from this show: Ehm...nothing.
It's about love, or something. Oh! A nice soundtrack featuring Amuro Namie!
That's about it.
