Wat Saket and The Golden Mount

Wat Saket is one of the oldest temples in Bangkok, the temple itself was built in the Ayutthaya era.

But the temple complex is most famous for the 60 meter high artificial mountain known as Phu Khao Thong, meaning Golden Mountain.

Rama the 3rd decided to build an enormous chedi on the site but the soft earth of Bangkok could not handle the immense weight and so it collapsed.

The debris was left there and over time, weeds and trees reclaimed the site and it began to look more like a natural mountain.

When Rama the 4th took the throne, he had a smaller chedi built on the "mountain" and Rama the 5th then had the chedi covered in gold.

The temple itself is famous for having some very beautiful murals, including some which show rather disturbing scenes of people being tortured in the various levels of Buddhist hell.

Wat Saket's Dark History

During the reigns of Rama the 1st to the 5th, there was a tradition of not cremating bodies inside the city walls.

Wat Saket being outside the walls but close by became the primary spot for cremation and reoccurring cholera plagues that occurred throughout the late 18th Century and early 19th Century meant the cemetery and its surrounding neighborhood became known as Pratu Phi or Ghost Gate.

You can still find the unusual cemetery there today.

The Vultures of Wat Saket

Back when the cholera plagues were at their worst, Wat Saket was overwhelmed with hundreds of bodies each day and eventually there were far more than they could cremate.

During this time, they had to be left in the open area of the monastery as vultures moved in to devour them.

This 1900's photo shows a cement crematorium in the grounds of Wat Saket with many vultures perched atop it.

The amulet with Buddha seating on a 5 tiers, the 5 tiers refers to Benja-sean / Benja-tham which is  Buddhist five precepts.The Five Precepts are the Buddhist version of a code of conduct or rules to help people behave in a moral and ethical way. Buddhists should follow the Five Precepts to ensure they are living a morally good life. This helps them to get rid of suffering and achieve enlightenment.

The five precepts are as follows:

1. Refrain from taking life. Not killing any living being. For Buddhists, this includes animals, so many Buddhists choose to be vegetarian.

2. Refrain from taking what is not given. Not stealing from anyone.

3. Refrain from the misuse of the senses . Not having too much sensual pleasure. For example, not looking at people in a lustful way or committing adultery.

It is important to practice the precepts over time as they are not always easy to carry out. Following the Five Precepts is linked to karma, as these count as skillful actions, which produce good consequences.

AI Reality Retouch

Hello, my dear watchers here on DeviantArt and from other platforms,

Today, I’d like to introduce you to my latest collection concept: "AI Reality Retouch."

What is it all about?

For those who may not know me or the story behind my art creation, you’re invited to read more about it here.

Aside from using generative AI tools to create intricate, imaginative art from my brain through magical prompts, I also use image-to-image techniques with real photos taken on my smartphone as input, carefully crafting the final output.

This process is very challenging and time-consuming. I use a combination of various AI tools and techniques like

image-to-image or image2image

denoising strength control

inpainting

basic image editing software (sometimes)

Since smartphone photos generally have lower resolution than those taken with advanced DSLR cameras, it’s impossible for me to submit them directly to stock photo sites.

But of course, I’m not giving up. I started the “AI Reality Retouch” project to enhance these photos with AI and submit them as stock images. While the original photos have great details, the AI-enhanced versions often surpass the beauty of the originals. Some of these have even been approved for sale on Adobe Stock, which makes me very happy.
