Washington Monument in the Distance

Day 7. Monday Sept 11, Post I of II: Washington DC. OMG, I have long wanted to visit DC, and now I know why. This place is a goldmine of landmarks and history.

I start off the day buying a hop on hop off bus tour ticket and walking downtown to the nearest stop. As I wait for the bus, I realise that I am across the street from the Ford Theater where Lincoln was assassinated and in front of the Peterson House where he was taken for treatment but unfortunately died.

Looking to cheer up I hop on the bus which has justcartived. Simply speaking, Washington DC is aligned north to south with the Potomac River running along the west side and the National Mall running east from the river for about two miles, parallel to Constitution Ave.

At the far west end of the National Mall, overlooking the river and the Arlington Memorial Bridge stands the Lincoln Memorial. If you go west and cross the river, you are in Virginia and at Arlington Cemetery. This 269-acre national site holds over 400,000 graves, including JFK and Jackie Onassis and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I also happened to trip over Robert McNamara's tomb stone.

Meanwhile, back in DC, if you look east from.the Lincoln Memorial down the National Mall, you see in sequence the Reflecting Pool, the WWII Memorial, the Washington Monument and far in the distance the US Capital. About one third if the way down, immediately to the left (north) of the Washington Momument, sits the White House.

Washington DC is chock full of significant historical buildings. Rather than trying g to recreate my route, let me just run down what I saw and remember:

Fords Theater

The White House

The Willard Hotel, located near the Whitehouse, it was a prime location for dignitaries. It is rumored that those wishing to petition their causes would often wait in the lobby, hoping to bump into their intended targets, thus begat the name lobbyists.

The FBI building where J Edgar Hoover ruled from 1935 to 1972.

The US Capital

US Treasury

Library of Congress

The original US Post Office, now a Waldorf Astoria Hotel

Numerous Smithsonian Museums, all free

L'Enfant Plaza

The International Spy Museum

Washington Monument

The Holocaust Memorial

Jefferson Memorial

FDR and MLK Memorials

Lincoln Memorial

Albert Einstein Memorial

Arlington Cemetery

WWII Memorial

The National History Museum

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing where paper mo ey is printed (as opposed to the mint which strikes coins).

There was more, but for now, that's all I can remember, and you get the picture.

The highlight of the day, however, turned out to be my trip to The Capital. Following a structured tour where I saw the inside of the rotundra and the original meeting rooms for the House and the Senate, I was permitted as a visitor to the US to witness a vote in the Senate. They were not actually sitting in session, so I sat there for an hour while the senators dropped by to vote. I didn't know many of them, among those I did see and recognize were:

It was quite the day. I walked back to my hotel in the Union Market area through the gentrifying areas to the north and east of the historic downtown core area I'd been prowling. DC's population is currently circa 720,000, but it is clearly growing and expanding.

emma was looking for a good place to sketch. she usually ended up in the park but she had wanted to try something a little different. she decided to visit some of the monuments to find some subjects for her sketching. she was sitting outside the washington monument sketching when she heard a little noise coming from some nearby bushes. the redhead set her sketchbook aside and went over to investigate. whatever it was sounded distressed. emma dug through the bushes and her heart almost broke at what she saw. there was a little baby fox with its leg stuck in a plastic can holder. 

    “oh you poor thing,” she cooed softly. she slowly moved towards the baby animal, hoping not to frighten the little thing. it squirmed a little bit but couldn’t move much because of the plastic. she gently picked up the little fox and carefully unwrapped it’s leg from the plastic. it wriggled but she held it to her chest, looking for it’s mother. “where’s your momma?” she asked softly. it gave a sad little noise and emma’s heart broke for it. she kissed it’s head. “don’t worry little one. i’ll take care of you,” she said softly, gathering her stuff and petting the fox to make sure it was calm. she was going straight home.

Trump Announces National Garden of American Heroes

Rejecting the "merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values and indoctrinate our children" in his July 3 Mount Rushmore speech, President Donald Trump announced an executive order to celebrate American heroes.

"Under the authority vested in me as president of the United States, I am announcing the creation of a new monument to the giants of our past,"  Trump said in his Friday night speech in South Dakota. "I am signing an executive order to establish the National Garden of American Heroes, a vast outdoor park that will feature the statues of the greatest Americans to ever live.

"From this night and from this magnificent place, let us go forward united in our purpose and re-dedicated in our resolve. We will raise the next generation of American patriots. We will write the next thrilling chapter of the American adventure.

"And we will teach our children to know that they live in a land of legends, that nothing can stop them, and that no one can hold them down. They will know that in America, you can do anything, you can be anything, and together, we can achieve anything."

Trump's executive order is an effort to strike back at the destruction of American momuments in an election year. Its location and makeup will be flushed out by the Task Force for Building and Rebuilding Monuments to American Heroes, and it will be finished by July 4, 2026.

A portion of order reads:

"The National Garden should be composed of statues, including statues of John Adams, Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton, Daniel Boone, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, Henry Clay, Davy Crockett, Frederick Douglass, Amelia Earhart, Benjamin Franklin, Billy Graham, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Douglas MacArthur, Dolley Madison, James Madison, Christa McAuliffe, Audie Murphy, George S. Patton, Jr., Ronald Reagan, Jackie Robinson, Betsy Ross, Antonin Scalia, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, George Washington, and Orville and Wilbur Wright."
