I love this take. I don't entirely believe Bioware fully realizes it at this point, or at least they haven't verbalized the series' overarching themes in this way, but they need to so they can do it better. This is a series about the inevitable march forward, empires rise and fall and change the world and in the end no one really remembers, life just keeps going until the moments you thought etched in stone are less than specks on the horizon. Your choices matter within each game, in the immediacy of the moment, but like all history they are flattened and forgotten as time moves on. Nothing matters but it *all* matters, you understand? Dragon Age is about how one person or one small group can simultaneously do so much, have such an impact on the world, and yet barely leave a scuff behind. Bioware just needs to listen to Dolly Parton and do it on purpose.
Mfw the game about the futility of choice and the horror of living in an oppressive system where individual actions can do very little even when well intentioned isn't narratively important in its minutae a decade+ after its close
#I get why people are reacting this way to the three choices thing#and I mean this is why I don't want Fenris back because I know he won't be the Fenris my Hawke knew by the end of 2#He'll be a flattened version just like Morrigan will be if her personality isn't influenced by the different ways her life can have gone#But ultimately I want to see them go further this direction#From what I'm hearing within the game the branching storylines and reactivity is incredible#I like little carryovers and references but ultimately I want the games to be contained stories#And together I want them to build the living history of Thedas as a whole#Basically I want Unprepared Casters in game form#Anyway I'm not preordering cause I have moral objections but I'm not writing the game off until we actually get our hands on it#And this is mostly me rambling anyway DA is my favorite hyperfix#Dragon age#dragon age the veilgaurd#Datv spoilers#Sort of?#But like we even get a microcosm of this exact theme in the Soldier's Peak DLC for Origins#Wardens rebelled against a tyrant and fought a grand battle and they summoned demons and used blood magic and were thrown out of Ferelden#And by Origins no one remembers#Not why the Wardens were thrown out not that King Arland was a tyrant#Look at Caridan and the golems#It's literally EVERYWHERE in this series please please please work it into the actual game design from now on
