me: why on god's green earth is this sourced to the daily mail
me: googles "wang enlin"
first link is wikipedia to a zillionaire magnate named wang jianlin. skim just in case. definitely wrong guy
second link is to a skeptics thread on stackexchange. specifically someone asking what's up with the meme because all english language sources trace back to a single chinese article
there are two replies on stackexchange, both with linked sources. the first one sums up that the meme, like so many "unbelievable facts", is roughly based on a true story but misleading in several ways. copying the information here because of link rot:
* there was a genuine lawsuit brought by a group of farmers whose land was polluted, including the named wang enlin. however, the farmers were represented by lawyers specializing in environmental law; they did not represent themselves in court.
* the group of farmers sought assistance from china-based environmental law agency, the center for assistance to pollution victims, who helped them bring the court case.
* wang enlin appears to have been a driving force in the case and to have done research and documentation for it, such as keeping clippings of news articles which publicized test results on the pollution. we have no verifiable data on his level of schooling.
* a pdf sourced to ipen.org (international pollutants elimination network, a nonprofit based in sweden) gives details from 2015 on the case, in the form of a case study on the pollution and the difficulty in getting it remediated. WARNING for graphic description of how chlorine gas kills you at the link. chlorine is a byproduct of the pvc manufacturing process used at the polluting chemical plant in question.
* the pdf gives helpful dates: the pollution events took place 2001-2008, the farmers seem to have reached out to the center for assistance to pollution victims in 2006, and the court case was decided in 2017. sixteen years total.
* the pdf also clarifies that the case study is part of an EU-funded IPEN research project called the china chemical safety project, which was ongoing 2012-2014.
* a chinese ngo called the green beagle institute was heavily involved in both the case and in putting out the case study. the stackexchange commenter who found the pdf correctly points out that this could indicate biased reporting? i haven't found an english-language website for green beagle (google keeps turning up pet kennels and lawn decor instead), and i don't read chinese, so i have no way to find out for sure.
* the green beagle institute got a documentary filmmaker involved, which is part of why this particular story made international news headlines (such as they were *frowns at Daily Mail attribution*)
* a later link from november 2017, found by a different commenter at the stackexchange page, is now linkrotted, but a pasted excerpt claimed the case had been overturned on appeal and the pollution would not be remediated. the same excerpt quoted wang enlin saying they would continue to fight the case.
* the latest news in the case, from chinese government news source CBCGDF on August 8, 2018, is an obituary for wang enlin as an environmental hero after he died at age 65. (link in chinese, read by me using google translate.) the obituary hints at a much more interesting story, mentioning that wang enlin was awarded the 2017 "civil environmental heroes commendation" for his leadership work on the group of farmers known as the "black soil guardians". it also mentions that he had been to jail, but gives no details. (honestly i'm really curious now, but i'm not sure how i'd find out more without being able to google in chinese.)
* wang enlin's death is attributed to deteriorating health from his long-term work on environmental issues.
so! why am i going over all this? mainly because i found it interesting. partly because i've scrolled past this meme before and only looked into it this time because the daily mail sourcing snagged my eye.
partly because this is a good example of a trend i want to teach myself to notice more. observe that the meme casts the story as that of a lone hero quietly studying, nondisruptive until he brings his court case and wins through proper channels, all without seeking help from anyone else -- just the dictionary!
while the real story, as far as we can tell, starts with group action and seeking assistance. wang enlin and the other black soil guardians formed a group to try to get their village's badly contaminated land and water remediated. they reached out to a well-regarded legal center who helped them bring a lawsuit. they actively fought for eleven years to get their case documented and heard. they seem to have worked with green beagle's connections to ipen in order to get EU funding for the chemical testing they needed to prove their land and water was toxic.
they talked to everybody who could possibly help, in china and internationally. they made noise. they made a documentary! (they had professionals make a documentary!) wang enlin went to jail at some point!
and they failed. as far as we can tell. the big bad company won. the land is still polluted. wang enlin is dead.
and? they tried. not by sitting alone waiting to take on tasks too big for them. by uniting. by asking for help. by working together.
are the rest of the black soil guardians dead? we don't know. is the court case still being appealed back and forth? we don't know. but even if this effort failed, none of it would ever have happened if wang enlin and his fellow farmers had tried to fight corporate evil one-on-one instead of recruiting help.

Elon Musk Loses World's Richest Title Again in March 2023
Tumblr media
Elon Musk has lost his title as world's richest person for second time in a year, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Tesla and SpaceX CEO net worth has fallen by more than $30 billion since beginning of year, as shares of his companies have tumbled.
Musk is now worth $197.7 billion, according to the index. That less than $221.3 billion net worth of Bernard Arnault chief executive of luxury goods conglomerate LVMH. Arnault has been the world's richest person since December 2021.
Musk's decline in wealth is due in part to the recent sell off in tech stocks. Tesla shares have fallen by more than 20% since the beginning of the year, while SpaceX shares have fallen by more than 30%.
Musk has also been selling off shares of Tesla in recent months to help finance his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter. He has sold more than $12 billion worth of Tesla stock since April.
Musk loss of the title of world's richest person is a reminder of the volatility of the stock market and the fickle nature of wealth. Just a few months ago, Musk was the richest person in the world. Now, he's been knocked out of the top spot by Arnault.
Here is a list of top 25 richest men in the world as of April 04, 2023:
Bernard Arnault ($221.3 billion) Elon Musk ($197.7 billion) Jeff Bezos ($187.3 billion) Bill Gates ($136.2 billion) Warren Buffett ($122.1 billion) Larry Ellison ($116.9 billion) Sergey Brin ($103.7 billion) Larry Page ($103.7 billion) Mark Zuckerberg ($99.7 billion) Mukesh Ambani ($98.7 billion) Gautam Adani ($91.2 billion) Steve Ballmer ($90.1 billion) Amancio Ortega ($87.3 billion) Françoise Bettencourt Meyers ($86.5 billion) Li Ka-shing ($86.2 billion) Jack Ma ($83.8 billion) Robin Li ($82.5 billion) Ma Huateng ($81.8 billion) Wang Jianlin ($74.6 billion) Pony Ma ($71.9 billion) Forrest Mars Jr. ($71.4 billion) Michael Dell ($70.6 billion) S. Robson Walton ($68.9 billion) Alice Walton ($68.9 billion) Christy Walton ($68.9 billion)

Nuevo nombre y nuevo escudo (2016)
Tumblr media

Quote
Ma had attracted trouble long before last year. His cult-like following helped him build unrivalled influence for a businessman in China, but he became too powerful in a country that only allows a single centre of power. Now supreme leader Xi is threatening to crush him, in a contest that captures the contradiction at the heart of modern China — the Communist party’s wary embrace of the capitalists who power the country’s economic growth. As Xi has tightened control over Chinese society, he has reinvigorated state-run companies and brought the country’s oligarchs to heel. Billionaire run-ins with the state over regulatory concerns, corruption or other perceived slights have become so frequent in recent years that a new rule has emerged: lie low. Some, such as Wang Jianlin, founder of real-estate conglomerate Wanda, have fallen silent while shrinking their businesses; others, like Wu Xiaohui of insurance conglomerate Anbang, have ended up in jail, with their empires taken over by the state.

Legendary’s next release, “Pacific Rim: Uprising,” which will arrive in February, cost about $150 million to make, for instance. Its 2013 franchise predecessor cost an estimated $190 million.
Ouch.

My husband had been working for many months on another investigative report for Bloomberg about financial ties between one of China’s richest men, Wang Jianlin, and the families of senior Communist Party officials, including relatives of Xi. Bloomberg editors had thus far backed the story. A Bloomberg managing editor, Jonathan Kaufman, said in an email in late September 2013, “I am in awe of the way you tracked down and deciphered the financial holdings and the players. … It’s a real revelation. Looking forward to pushing it up the line,” according to an account published by the Financial Times.
Then Bloomberg killed the story at the last minute, and the company fired my husband in November after comments by Bloomberg News editor-in-chief Matt Winkler were leaked. “If we run the story, we’ll be kicked out of China,” Winkler reportedly said on a company call.

Rafael Benitez wary of the challenge at Chinese side Dalian Yifang, eyes revamp of youth talent system
[ad_1]
Shanghai: Rafael Benitez admits he faces a stiff challenge in China but hopes to “create something great” at Dalian Yifang, where he can rely on the deep pockets of the club’s owner, huge Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group.
In separate comments posted on both his own and the club’s websites, the 2005 Champions League winner with Liverpool said…
