The Unprecedented MGM Grand - Bally's Monorail, Premiering Summer 1995. - billboard.
During the construction of MGM Grand hotel and theme park in Spring '93, Chairman Bob Maxey announced plans for a 1-mile monorail connecting the MGM with Bally’s resort. The line would run east of the two hotels on land they owned between Tropicana Ave & Flamingo Rd.
Monorail in Las Vegas had been proposed as far back as the 1960s, and the new effort in the 90s was seen by some as the first leg of a mass transit system. Maxey suggested the proposal would fit in with plans by Clark County officials to run a monorail loop from downtown Las Vegas along the Strip to the airport. Some suggested it might also be integrated into the county’s plans for pedestrian walkways over Tropicana Ave and Flamingo Rd.
“Monorail mania is no stranger to Las Vegas. And neither is the letdown that follows every grandiose plan unveiled and then quashed.” - Erik Pappa, Las Vegas Sun.
The MGM Grand-Bally's monorail was approved by the county commission, built for $25M. It opened June 13, 1995 with two used Mark IV monorail trains that had operated on the Walt Disney World Monorail. The original drivers, age 20-25, also work as ride operators at the MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park.
The line was later developed into the Las Vegas Monorail, connecting with Las Vegas Convention Center and north to the Sahara.
A full story of the Las Vegas Monorail up to that point is Next stop, Suckerville! by Steve Sebelius and George Knapp, Las Vegas CityLife, 9/14/2005.
The Mark IV trains were taken out of service in the early 00s, ending up crushed, as props in monster truck shows, and in a yard in Sandy Valley NV. The last piece of the Bally's train in Sandy Valley was sold to a shop in So Cal in 2023.

Navigating the Magic: A Guide to Disney Transportation in Orlando
Orlando, Florida is synonymous with enchanting theme parks and magical experiences. At the heart of this whimsical world lies Walt Disney World Resort, a sprawling haven of joy and wonder. As visitors embark on their magical journey through this enchanting realm, efficient transportation becomes a key element in ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience. In this blog post, we will delve into the intricacies of Disney transportation in Orlando, uncovering the secrets that make exploring the parks as delightful as the attractions themselves.
Tumblr media
Disney's Magical Express: Your Gateway to the Magic
Upon landing at Orlando International Airport, travelers are welcomed into the arms of Disney's Magical Express, an exclusive complimentary shuttle service for Disney Resort hotel guests. This seamless transition from airport to resort sets the stage for the enchanting adventures that await. Visitors can sit back and relax as they are whisked away to their chosen Disney Resort, immersing themselves in the magic right from the start.
Monorails, Buses, and Boats: A Symphony of Transit
Once inside the magical world of Disney, an array of transportation options awaits. The iconic monorails, with their futuristic design, glide effortlessly above the ground, providing swift transport between select Disney Resort hotels and Magic Kingdom. The rhythmic hum of the monorail becomes a familiar and comforting sound for frequent Disney visitors, signaling the beginning and end of memorable days in the parks.
For destinations beyond the reach of the monorail, Disney's fleet of buses steps up to the plate. These air-conditioned coaches connect all Disney Resort hotels, theme parks, and Disney Springs, ensuring that every corner of the enchanted kingdom is within reach. The punctuality and efficiency of the bus system make it a reliable choice for travelers eager to maximize their time exploring the attractions.
Adding a touch of romance to the transportation experience, Disney's fleet of boats glides across picturesque waterways, linking resorts such as Disney's Wilderness Lodge and Disney's Contemporary Resort to Magic Kingdom and other destinations. A leisurely boat ride not only offers a scenic journey but also provides a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of the parks.
The Key to Effortless Exploration: Planning and Patience
While Disney transportation is undoubtedly convenient, it is essential for visitors to plan their journeys wisely. Understanding the transportation schedules and allowing ample time for travel is crucial, especially during peak seasons. Patience, too, is a virtue when navigating the transportation system, as fellow travelers eagerly embark on their magical quests.
Visitors can enhance their transportation experience by utilizing the My Disney Experience mobile app, a digital wizard that provides real-time information on transportation schedules, wait times, and even dining reservations. Armed with this powerful tool, guests can make informed decisions, ensuring they make the most of their time in the parks.
Conclusion: Embracing the Enchantment
In the realm of Walt Disney World Resort, transportation is not merely a means of getting from point A to point B; it is an integral part of the immersive experience. From the moment visitors step onto Disney's Magical Express to their final ride aboard the monorail, every journey is infused with the same enchantment that permeates the parks.
So, as you embark on your magical adventure in Orlando, embrace the seamless and captivating world of Disney transportation. Let it carry you effortlessly to the heart of the magic, allowing you to focus on creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. TALLAHASSEE – Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday signed 37 bills, including a measure will require the state to inspect Walt Disney World’s monorail system.
The bill (HB 1305) came amid a feud between DeSantis and Disney that started last year when the company opposed a law that restricts instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity in schools.
Under the bill, the Department of Transportation, starting July 1, will be required to complete compliance reports for the monorail every three years and conduct annual onsite evaluations.
Disney and other large theme parks currently conduct their own safety inspections because of a carve-out from oversight by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Disney is the only property affected by the bill.

Thank you, Gov. DeSantis, for taking aim at a real safety issue in Florida.
I’m talking about the Disney World monorail system, of course.
Since 1971, this most heavily used monorail system in the world has delivered about 50 million people a year safely to destinations in the park. So, it’s way overdue for a screw-up.
Which is why we need to applaud DeSantis for having the foresight to step in. Because as we know, there are three serious health and welfare issues that are gripping the state, issues that require quick government action.
They are:
Getting more untrained Floridians out in public places with loaded guns.
Banning abortions to women before they realize they are pregnant.
Seizing control of the Walt Disney World monorail.
Check. Check. And check.
