After spending his youth as a soldier, he settled down in his hometown-- Baldur's Gate-- as a city guard. Originally a member of the Flaming Fist, he fought against the corruption he noticed brewing in the order... and as a reward was shipped out to the Risen Road, where a family he was guarding was attacked in the night by gnolls. After tracking the beasts to their den, he ventured in to find the family in varying states of alive and disemboweled, and his squad quickly fell in the ensuing fight. He should have died...

He woke up in a pod instead and quite frankly didn't have enough time to process any of that shit, because with the blessing of Helm he has an Absolute to vanquish. After being as LG as possible through the grove, killing some goblins, fighting through a Githyanki creche and helping both Lae'zel and Shadowheart challenge the falsehoods they've lived in for so long, lifting a shadow curse and decimating a literal ghost town ruled by selfish, immensely rich nobles, he's barely holding it together by the time he reaches Baldur's Gate.

Of course he doesn't side with Orin. And Lawfuls can work together... but he also tells Gortash that he's going to bring him to justice just as soon as they've dealt with the brain (and that this is Gortash's chance to redeem himself!). He makes a lot of problems for him, honestly! Which is why Gortash has him labeled clearly unstable and insane and has him locked away forever. Oh, he's not going to kill him after Mattis saved Baldur's Gate. He's a good man. Lawful, noble, dedicated, selfless. But he's far too dangerous to let walk free. The Archduke can be magnanimous and allow the champion of Baldur's Gate, with his poor, broken mind, to live out the rest of his days in peace.

I think that Gortash comes and talks to him sometimes. Some days he doesn't even gloat.
