Muse Disc Guide - Showbiz [STYLE Series #004 - Muse (August 2010)]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IN MUSIC
In the UK in 1999, dance and idol music dominated the scene. This trio emerged in the midst of such a rock slump and brought new life and hope to the scene with their rich creativity and solid musicianship, which were not typical of newcomers.
At the time of making this album, their average age was just over 20. However, for the three, who had been playing together in a band since junior high school, this was their first album. Most of the songs on the album were written over the span of several years. Seven of the songs (2/ Muscle Museum, 5/ Cave, 7/ Unintended, 8/ Uno, 9/ Sober, 11/ Escape, 12/ Overdue) have already been released on rare EPs from their former label, Dangerous (although the recording times and versions were different).
The growth they have achieved since their formation is in direct proportion to the variety of music they have absorbed during that time. From classical to boogie-woogie, Matthew's musical origins lie in the piano, Dom started playing drums after jazz, and Chris has played guitar, keyboards, drums and a variety of other instruments. They started playing in bands around 1992, just as the grunge wave was blowing, but they also digested melodic punk, grebo, goth, alternative metal and more.
What ultimately defined their uniqueness was Matthew's insatiable inquisitiveness and omnivorous tastes. At the age of 17, Matthew wandered around Europe, getting to know the folk music of different regions and later learning to play the Spanish guitar. In his late teens, he returned to classical piano, including Chopin and Rachmaninoff, while the influence of Jeff Buckley became evident in his melancholic melodies and emotional singing style with a deft use of falsetto. This album, which has all of this in its blood, is a debut that is still in its infancy compared to their second and later albums, which fully developed their unique personalities, but it is diverse and accomplished enough to show their potential. The coexistence of the dramatic contrasts of movement and stillness, as well as the coexistence of the intense emotion and elegant romanticism represented by (3/ Fillip), can be said to be the cornerstone of the ‘Muse’ style. —Imai Sumi

1999 Hit Albums
The year 1999, when Showbiz was released, was actually a bad year for UK bands. The year was dominated by idol/pop acts. This was epitomised by the debut album (A/ …Baby One More Time) by Britney Spears, the biggest pop icon of the following decade. The video for ‘Baby One More Time’, featuring a high-school girl in a super-mini, navel-baring look, is still burned into people's brains as a powerful impression. It was also the year Christina Aguilera made her album debut. Other so-called boy band albums such as Backstreet Boys, Westlife, and Boyzone topped the charts across the board, while S Club 7 and Steps also became regulars in the UK charts.
In the US, Red Hot Chilli Peppers' (B/ Californication), which Muse also opened for, proved overwhelmingly strong, while Limp Bizkit, who debuted with (C/ Significant Other), raised the signal for the rise of Nu Metal. Eminem, who debuted with (D/ The Slim Shady LP), later became a major force on the chopping block of Limp and the aforementioned Britney. Among these, the few successful albums by young UK guitar bands were Travis‘ (E/ The Man Who), which replaced the loud Rock'n'Roll of their debut with a more melancholic sound, and Stereophonics’ (F/ Performance and Cocktails), which was a straight-up rock hit. Although Muse were initially compared to the likes of Radiohead, they were quite unique in the scene. That hasn't changed even now, though.
-
IN LYRICS
As a debut album, the lyrics are very much Matthew in his local Teignmouth days. A prime example is (4/ Falling Down), which even gives the population/household numbers: ‘15,000 people scream’ and ‘5,000 houses burning down’. The city's status as a holiday destination for Londoners, a city that makes its living by serving tourists, combined with its recent desolation, made adolescent Matthew feel like a core of losers in a society of inequality. It was self-evident to Matthew that ‘no one can save this city’, and not only in this song, but also in the protagonists of the lyrics, there is a tendency to try to escape or hide somewhere.
(1/ Sunburn) is also attributed to a local story, and here too we can see the composition of a disparate society: ‘the winners who spend a lot of money on a tourist attraction that seems to be a kind of women's dance show’. The image of the ‘Sunburn’ = tanning is also associated with ugly adults for Matthew, but it could also be interpreted as a form of the money-grubbing music business. Although wrapped in a thinly veiled mask, there is no way to hide the nervous state of mind before the debut, and the world is formed by ‘me’ who restrains himself and clowns around, and ‘you’ who indulges his desires. Track (6/ Showbiz), exudes the blue anxiety of the night before stepping into the real showbiz.
In an interview during his first visit to Japan, Matthew said, ‘There were alcoholics roaming around in my hometown’, and (9/ Sober), in which several brands of whisky are interwoven, does not deny such drunks, but rather describes the effects of alcohol on the mind and body in a rock-like manner. The casual love for one's hometown can also be read into this, and the half-love-hate feelings towards one's hometown overlap with the split state of what is known in Japan as ‘chuunibyou/middle-school second year syndrome’. The British national band was very young at the time of their debut. —Kaoru Abe

What's on your raised-Sith!Anakin playlist?? What are the chapter ideas?? Moodboard screenshots???
Hehe.
Well, Skillet is kinda dominating the playlist. But it was a couple Trading Yesterday songs in my friend's car as we drove to the airport week before last that kicked me in the gut enough to make the fic idea stick.
'Change My Name' — Trading Yesterday, 'Under My Skin' — Trading Yesterday, 'Right Here' — Ashes Remain, 'Out of Hell' — Skillet, 'Save Me (Reimagined)' — Skillet, 'I Want to Live' — Skillet, 'Anchor' — Skillet, 'Valley of Death' — Skillet, 'Never Going Back' — Skillet, 'You' — Nathan Wagner, 'I' — Nathan Wagner, 'Love Me Like I Am' — for KING & COUNTRY, 'The Difference' — Westlife, 'Meet Me On the Battlefield' — Svrcina, 'Tell Your Heart to Beat Again' — Danny Gokey... I could go on but that's a bunch of them. And I haven't even gone digging through RED yet.
Chapter ideas... I think Imma aim for 10-15 chapters, excluding possible prologues/epilogues. The point is very much the characters, and their development, and the relationship that grows between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader/Anakin. I'm hand-waving a lot of background plot. I really want to try to capture the massive contrast between Obi-Wan and Anakin’s lives and ways of thinking, then show how Obi-Wan starts changing Anakin, and vice-versa. The first chapter/prologue? encapsulates that, contrasting Obi-Wan dealing with Qui-Gon's death, and Anakin dealing with his mother's. The fic as a whole wouldn't cover more than a year.
Ah, my moodboards. Here's a couple.
This one is for the fic as a whole:
Tumblr media
This is for Anakin, and I am really proud of it:
Tumblr media
I am not a good artist, but I will make an attempt to design his look as Darth Vader.
Thanks for the questions! Now I have to go make a stab at that Anakin and Rex fic I mentioned a month ago, lol.

Last week, I listened to this 4 at the Store thing, with Radio 4 stand-up comedy from 1998-2004. I decided that would make this week a good time to get to something I’ve had in my folder for a while, which is this audiobook that came out in 2020, with about 20 minutes each by a bunch of different comedians. It’s about 8.5 hours, and the idea was for it to showcase some of the stuff that should have happened at the 2020 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, but didn’t, because, you know, 2020.
It’s cool to me to go straight from a mish-mash of a bunch of late 90s/early 00s comedians showing off whatever they do, to the same thing but in 2020. A really interesting way to compare the way comedy as a whole had changed in 20 years, as well as the ways in which it hadn’t. I think in many ways, I was more surprised by what stayed the same than by what changed.
I may try to do a more in-depth post about this once I actually finish listening to Edinburgh Unlocked, right now I have about three hours of it left. But I’m really enjoying it so wanted to mention it. My favourites so far are: John Kearns, Mo Omar, Shelf, Chloe Petts, and Leo Reich. Which is cool, because I hadn’t heard of Mo Omar at all and really enjoyed his stuff, always good to discover new stuff. Leo Reich was also pretty much unknown to me, the name was familiar because I knew I’d seen it around the internet somewhere, and just immediately thought, “I don’t like that guy.” Once I actually listened to him, and really liked him, I realized I’m pretty sure all that’s happened is my brain saw his name, though of Leo Kearse and Lee Hurst, and decided he must be terrible. I am quite pleased to have that misnomer corrected. I’m also pleased that I ended up liking Leo Reich so much, because I think he’s one of those gen Z ones, and I’m a bit concerned that I might be a bit biased against those ones, but he was great.
Chloe Petts I already knew from some panel shows (actually just Hypothetical, I think, but then she was on the Taskmaster podcast), where I’d liked her enough to look her up and find a few little clips of her stand-up, but hadn’t found anything longer form so it was great to get 20 whole minutes of an Edinburgh hour that I’d love to hear in its entirety. Shelf I’d only heard of because Sarah Keyworth has referenced them in this story they’ve told in the couple of WIPs I’ve seen them stream online this year, and I’m pleased to saw that Shelf’s comedy material was pretty much exactly what I’d expected based on Keyworth’s stories. And obviously I knew John Kearns, looked up a bunch of his stand-up clips after Taskmaster last year, and I’m still not really on board with the false teeth gimmick, but if you just listen to the actual words he’s saying it’s fantastic.
Other good stuff I’ve heard in this audiobook so far - Sophie Hagen’s part was quite entertaining, but I just couldn’t quite list it among my favourites because of how genuinely painful it was to listen to, just too stark a reminder of my own forays into Harry Potter fanfiction circa 2002-2004, age 12-14. Lou Sanders just told some stories about her experiences at the Edinburgh Fringe over the years, which was lovely to listen to. Ivo Graham did something with Shakespare plays. Fern Brady’s hosting the whole thing, introduces each comedian with a little story about her relationship with them (her intro to John Kearns, a heartfelt description of him as an excellent comedian and a good friend, is quite funny in light of the Taskmaster treachery).
Anyway, I’m really enjoying it, it’s a nice way to get a little bit of a lot of comedy and then pick the ones you like enough to get into further.

McDonald’s EatQual Campaign: Envisioning Equality and Inclusivity
McDonald’s India launched an amazing campaign that highlights the role of the inclusivity platform, EatQual, in creating an inclusive experience at McDonald’s. The campaign created, by DDB Mudra, showcases how small innovations can go a long way in making the world a more equal place. The brand has extended its platform to launch more meaningful initiatives aimed at promoting inclusion across gender, language and disabilities.
Around 15% of the world’s population lives with some form of disability. Yet the world often fails to cater to their needs. EatQual addresses this fact and serves as an inclusivity platform that Mc Donald urges to build. Westlife Development Company, the company that owns and operates McDonald’s restaurants in West and South India, launched EatQual packaging last year on the occasion of International Day of People with Disabilities.
The campaign film narrates the story of a child’s curiosity to explore the world as they observe others experiencing it. It later shows how EatQual packaging helps the child’s friend with limited upper limb mobility eat the burger with ease. Mc Donald, through this campaign, highlights the harsh reality that the world doesn’t treat everyone the same; most things are designed to cater to the able-bodied individuals. Their idea of creating a package enables people with upper limb mobility to enjoy their burgers with dignity, an idea that is not only a life changing one but truly an important one.
Mc Donald’s recent campaign on ‘World Sight Day’ has been truly moving.  Emphasising the message that “We eat with our eyes,” the campaign discusses Mc Donald’s recently launched Colour blind friendly McDelivery, which enhances the experience of viewing their favourite burgers on their app and website before placing an order. Individuals who are colour blind can select from the three colour enhancement options: ‘Green-Red’, ‘Red-Green’ and ‘Blue-Yellow’.Their app and website use a new algorithm to display the menu in different colours appropriate for the users, allowing colour blind people to see the real colours of the food and drinks, enabling them to make informed decisions.
To ensure a wider reach, the brand has collaborated with Kenny Sebastian for this initiative. Mc Donald’s EatQual is more than just a campaign, it’s a journey that Mc Donald’s is on. With every campaign, they enhance the eating experience and make it a little more equal for everyone. The brand launched this campaign through a panel discussion featuring a renowned ophthalmologist, a photographer who is also colour blind and Mc Donald’s Chief Marketing Officer.  Want to know more about such interesting campaigns? tmi you don’t have to read
so i’ve been busy and stressed out bc yk the whole working adult™ thing. but i got the chance to take a few days off of work and hop on a plane w my sis to attend our first concert ever. a westlife one!! it was incredible and huge for the both of us and i’m overjoyed that i got to share this experience with her. growing up, i looked up to her and naturally developed interests for the same things she was into, and this one in particular got us to where we were a few days ago; in the same venue as the westlife men, listening to them perform LIVE right in front of our eyes!!! it was unmatched honestly. i can’t get over mark’s and shane’s vocals specifically they were amazing!!!! i still can’t believe it happened i’m still processing and living off the remnant of serotonin that night produced in my brain.
I’m glad that my sister finally got to live her teenage dream in her 30s if only for a few hours. and yeah, i was there and it meant a whole lot for me as well and it was a great night and all, but it only made my desire to see shinee in concert much stronger. sooner or later it’ll happen and i promise on that day i’ll fully lose my mind. warning everyone in advance to not interact for safety reasons.
anyway it was prob one of the coolest things ive done so far in life :’)
