World Down Syndrome Day: Fox News contributor speaks to Down syndrome dad
Each year on March 21, World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) marks a global day of awareness and education about the genetic condition. 💛💙 Today is World Down Syndrome Day! A day to celebrate the accomplishments of this beautiful and diverse community. I’ve felt extremely ambivalent this year about “celebrating”. So much progress has been made but a monumental task lay ahead for advocates and parents. I am also exhausted from the contestant challenges that come with caring for a person who has Down Syndrome and Autism. Blake has created the ultimate contrast. Without these challenges and struggles the beauty would cease to be as radiant or appreciated. Blake has changed my life profoundly and has opened my eyes to a world and perspective only some are ever privy to. I don’t know what is to come for us but what I do know today as I acknowledge WDSD: 🚫 How society defines “success” (grades, job titles, income, beauty) is complete BS. 🕰 Blake lives in the moment. He’s naturally gifted with what so many “typical” people work, practice and strive for and may never achieve. 💛 Unconditional love 💙 Unconditional Acceptance of all differences is essential for our society to evolve. We are far from achieving this but I’ll always have hope and work towards this. 🧬 Down Syndrome is not a “mistake”, abnormality or defect to me. I know Blake and his community have been part of the human tapestry of diversity since the beginning of time. ❤️ 🧠 Blake’s biggest gift to this earth has been the ability to effortlessly open hearts and change minds just by being himself. This lesson in unapologetic authenticity should be explored by everyone reading this. 👁 This community should not need to justify, perform, achieve, be more “alike typical people” or make headlines to receive the respect, support access, or meaningful inclusion they deserve. 🥳To those who chose to celebrate Happy WDSD 2021! To those who don’t, I am putting my digital arms around you because I see you and I fully understand. 👭 #DownSyndrome #wdsd #wdsd2021 #dualdiagnosis #parenting #motherhood #motherandson #Diversity #disability #mylife #mytruth #beautifulboy #autism #unconditionallove #specialneedsmom #specialneedsparenting (at Evolution Vintage Style & Creative Headquarters) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMs9v_Lgt1N/?igshid=1s30zdptvl2ks

I’m straying from my usual posts for a minute because
March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day!
Tumblr media
My biggest reason for celebrating today is of course impacted by his Down syndrome. It’s probably one of the first things you notice about him. He has had many more therapies and extra doctors appointments than most kids his age. Sometimes he has to do things a little differently. Sometimes they take a little bit longer. It’s okay to notice that some things are different. But it’s so important to remember that these things are just one piece. He is not defined or limited by his Down syndrome. He is a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin, and a friend. He is a little boy who loves rocket ships and Toy Story and popcorn. He is adorable and stubborn all at once and his laugh is super contagious. He is learning to read and is so proud of every accomplishment. He is just who he is supposed to be--strengths, weaknesses, and, yes, Down syndrome. All of these things together make him who he is. And that’s who I want you to see when you look at him--a whole wonderful person, not just a diagnosis.
This will be my sixth year joining in Rock Your Socks to raise awareness for Down syndrome and celebrate someone I love a whole lot. So on 3/21 let your extra attention-grabbing socks show. If you participate, I’d love to see your silly socks!
