The operation, however, is similar to all automatic cars. Slide the gearshift lever from “P” to “D” and off you go. Defunct German Car Brands: DKW

DKW was a brand that was founded in Chemnitz, Saxony, in 1904. The original plan to develop steam cars (Dampfkraftwagen) never materialized.

Instead, they mass-produced a toy engine developed by Hugo Ruppe, a brilliant engineer with no sense for business. DKW developed a successful advertising campaign, naming the engine “Des Knaben Wunsch” (”The Boy’s Desire”). It was a hit-seller.

Simultaneously, they developed, enlarged and improved the little two-stroke engine to make it suitable to be mounted on a bicycle as an auxiliary engine. The DKW marketing experts worked out a catchy slogan utilizing the three letters DKW once again: “DKW, das kleine Wunder, / fährt bergauf wie andere runter” (”DKW, the little wonder, drives uphill like others do downhill”). The engine became another success.

Encouraged, the company started to develop proper motorcycles, which, with good help from the marketing department, sold well. The model RT 125 was particularly successful and was copied worldwide by other manufacturers. It is still today the motorcycle with the highest production numbers.

As the demand shifted more and more from motorcycles to cars, the company began to develop small, light-bodied cars, which could be powered by the enhanced two-stroke motorcycle engines. The resulting F1, first introduced in 1930, became the first mass-produced car with front wheel drive. From there, a straight line of development began until after world war II. In 1932, DKW merged with Wanderer, Audi, and Horch, all in financial struggles from the world economic crisis, to form the Auto Union group, symbolized by the four rings.

When Germany was divided, many engineers from the Saxony-based Auto Union went to West Germany. Some were hired by Borgward, where they developed the superminis under the Lloyd brand, which were stunningly similar to the East German Trabant. Others formed a new West German Auto Union company based on the central spare parts depot in Ingolstadt, Bavaria. Full production was started in a former arms factory in Düsseldorf.

The first model called F89 Meisterklasse was entirely based on pre-war technology. The bodywork was from a never mass-produced 1940 prototype called F9. The frame, drivetrain, and suspension came from the tried-and-tested F8. It featured a transversally mounted water-cooled two-cylinder two-stroke engine driving the front wheels. Performance was meagre as the heavy bodywork was designed to be propelled by a more powerful three-cylinder engine.

The upgrade to a longitudinally-mounted three-cylinder engine finally came in 1953 with the F91 Sonderklasse, using more or less the same body, but the more advanced frame and suspension of the dropped F9 project. To boost sales, the DKW marketing department sprang into action. They changed the name from “F91 Sonderklasse” to “3=6″, claiming that the three-cylinder two-stroke engine would run as smooth as a six-cylinder four-stroke engine. This claim was hammered into the carbuyer’s brain in a massive year-long advertising campaign, so it was still present in the collective memory decades after the brand (and two-stroke engines) had disappeared from the West German market.

In 1955, the bodywork was slightly revised and the engine enlarged. The car was now marketed as “Der große DKW 3=6″ (”The big DKW 3=6″) with the internal model number F93. However, it became more and more obvious that the car with its pre-war design and smoky two-stroke engine was dated. Against all ad campaigns, the car did not sell well, and Auto Union was unable to generate enough financial resources to develop a new model. In 1958, Daimler-Benz acquired the company and marketed the car as Auto Union 900 (F94).

As a first measure to improve the car, the engine was enlarged once again to 1000 cc, the old body received a stylish panoramic windshield and abendoned the former suicide doors, the interior design was upgraded to match contemporary Mercedes-Benz standards, and rigorous quality control improved reliability. To improve the horrible emissions mainly caused by the need to mix the oil with the fuel, which was then left unburned and part of the exhaust gases, the cars received a separate oil tank with a dosage pump that mixed the oil with the fuel directly in the carburetor. This measure reduced oil consumption significantly, improving the emissions to some degree. The car was now sold as Auto Union 1000, but sales continued to drop. In 1960, not many people wanted to buy a new car that looked as if it was from the 1930s.

Around the same time, a rakish variants of the Auto Union 1000, a coupe and convertible in Baby-Ford-Thunderbird style were introduced. They were desirable cars screaming “Rock’nRoll” from every angle. But instead of having a powerful V8, it suffered from the dated two-stroke engine.

In 1959, the long-awaited new body was available, but first only with the low-power 750 cc engines. It was called DKW Junior. Once again, a heavy ad campaign promoting the contemporary aspects of the car helped boosting sales. However, the new oil-mixing apparatus proved to be unreliable. Especially in the winter, when the oil became thick, the engine was starved from lubrication, resulting in piston seizure. Expensive repairs on warranty further the reputation of the brand.

When the Auto Union 1000 with its pre-war body was finally discontinued in 1963, the new (slightly revised) body received the stonger 1000 cc engine and was called F11 and F12 for two levels of trim. The fact that these small cars were of Mercedes-Benz-like build quality, which was heavily advertised, certainly helped sales, but the outdated drivetrain technology meant that they were not a big success.

The final model, a mid-sized sedan called F102 was introduced in 1964. The old-fasioned frame-and-body construction was finally replaced by a contemporary unibody construction. But it still featured a three-cylinder two-stroke engine with a capacity of 1200 cc producing 60 hp. A 1300 cc two-stroke V6 engine with 80 hp was available on special request, but rarely ordered. Both engines were noted for their excessive fuel consumption and smelly exhaust. DKW tried to counteract the fuel consumption by installing additional springs onto the accelerator pedal, making it heavier to push down (a measure later copied by the East German carmakers Trabant and Wartburg). All advertising did no longer help; the time for two-stroke engines was over, and despite the fashionable, sleek design and exceptional build quality, the cars were almost impossible to sell. Production was discontinued by the end of 1965, less than two years after the model was introduced.

Auto Union was sold to the Volkswagen Group in 1964, who installed a four-cylinder four-stroke engine developed by Mercedes-Benz, which required slight alterations to the front of the car. To get rid of the old-fashioned image, the DKW brand was dropped, and the revised car was marketed from 1966 on as Audi 60, Audi 72, and Audi 75, depending on the power output of the engine. It became a good success and was the start of today’s successful upmarket Audi brand.

DKW had a small delivery van (Schnellaster) in its portfolio, which was also available as a mini van. Initially, it was powered by a 2-cylinder two-stroke engine producing 20 hp, allowing for a top speed of 60 km/h (37 mph). Power was upgraded over the years, and finally the van received the 900 cc 32 hp three-cylinder two-stroke engine for 80 km/h (50 mph). The improved chassis of the DKW delivery van, which had been the basis of the Mercedes-Benz MB100, is still in production in China, providing the underpinnings of the SAIC Istana.

The Zundapp K800 – One Of Germany’s Most Beautiful Motorcycles

The Zundapp K800 was one of the most advanced motorcycles of its age, it’s powered by a flat-4 unit construction engine with a 4-speed gearbox and a shaft drive to the rear wheel. The frame eschewed tubular steel for pressed steel construction, and the design of the K800 is still lauded to this day as one of the most beautiful motorcycles of the 20th century.

German company Zundapp initially started out in 1917 making detonators during WW1, the name Zündapp is a portmanteau of the German words “Zunder und Apparatebau” which translates to “Igniter and Apparatus”. Post-WW1 the market for detonators shrank considerably and so the company diversified into motorcycle manufacturing, quickly becoming the largest motorcycle builder In Germany and one of the largest in Europe.

The first Zundapp production motorcycle was theZ22 in 1921. It was marketed as the Motorrad für Jedermann, or the “Motorcycle for Everyone”, a two-wheeled precursor to the later Volkswagen Beetle. The Z22 was cheap, reliable, and simple, and this is what Zundapp was known for until they released the K series motorcycle models in the early 1930s.

The K series were more complex, expensive, and powerful motorcycles that made use of a new flat-4 air-cooled motorcycle engine. The largest K series motorcycle was the 800cc (actually 797cc) K800, just below this in the model family was the 600cc K600 – both were largely similar though with some differences, the most notable being the engine size.

Both the K600 and the K800 proved popular as sidecar motorcycles due to their relatively high power output (for the time), and their pressed steel frames were specifically designed to withstand the additional loads and stresses of sidecar duty.

The K800 is powered by a 797cc side valve, horizontally-opposed, flat-4 cylinder engine with air-cooling and a compression ratio of 5.8:1 to best suit the low quality gasoline available in Germany at the time. Power output was just 22hp at 4,300 rpm however this is rear wheel horsepower not brake horsepower, and it’s an impressive figure for the era. The top speed was 75 mph without a sidecar fitted and this dropped down to 60 mph (or a little lower) with a sidecar in place.

Brakes are drums front and back as you would expect, the pressed steel duplex cradle frame has a hard tail rear end and girder forks up front, and it tips the scales at 473 lbs (or 215kgs).

The Zundapp K800 was one of the most desirable motorcycles in Germany during the 1930s and it remains a highly desirable classic today thanks to its history, good looks, and its ability to keep up with modern traffic.

The K800 you see here is a comprehensively restored example now showing just 3 miles on the odometer, it’s a matching numbers machine and it appears essentially identical to how it would have looked when it rolled out of the factory in the southern German town of Nuremberg.

La forma, el tamaño y el acomodo de los faros empezaron a definir el aspecto de la marca. Los faros delanteros redondos dieron al Beetle sus tradicionales ‘ojos’ amigables. Después la parte frontal del Beetle cambió de los faros ‘inclinados’ a los faros ‘rectos’. También llegaron otros modelos con nuevos rostros: el 411 con los faros principales ovalados, el K 70 con luces de banda ancha, Passat, Golf… Sin embargo, el espectro estilístico era limitado hasta que los nuevos materiales y las novedosas técnicas de procesamiento revolucionaron el diseño de la iluminación. Los faros transparentes con reflector plástico de forma libre caracterizaron por primera vez un Volkswagen de producción estándar (Golf Mk4) en 1997 y ello se remonta al equipo de faros delanteros creado por Volkswagen Design en 1995. Gracias a los datos de CAD, se adoptó entonces un enfoque plenamente integrado que abrió un territorio inexplorado a los diseñadores de Volkswagen. Ojos grandes y redondos: los faros de los primeros Volkswagen Tipo 1 tienen un efecto decisivo en su apariencia. Mientras que los faros del V3 Prototipo todavía estaban montados externamente, en el Beetle ya estaban integrados en la parte delantera del vehículo. So i made a mistake. I was stopped last night and cited by a law enforcement officer for no proof of insurance. Progressive auto insurance problem !?

I need an opinion on what should i do in this case. 3 weeks ago , as I was driving home , on the freeway , from the truck in front of me fell big peace of ice and hit my car from underneath. Less than 1 minute later i noticed blue smoke behind , luckily there was and exit with gas station right there. By the time i pulled up to the gas station car was barely moving. After staying parked for 20 min , it leaked oil and tranny fluid . I called towing , had them pick the car up , called progressive made the claim. All of that happened in WI near Milwaukee , before i used to leave in Chicago , so I never dealt with progressive from WI. After couple days adjuster came out and gave shop 1100$ to start the repairs , shop diagnosed everything and came to a conclusion that its the transmission leaking because of the damage inside. Adjuster was extremely slow to give shop any kind of approvals to do anything , So after 3 weeks they finally allowed them to take transmission apart , another adjuster came out took pictures , then shop owner want around , called me and said that he will call me next day. Next day shop owner calls me asking if I heard anything from progressive ? I call that guy back , but he went on vacation. Call my first adjuster , she says that the guy who went on vacation concluded that it wasn't related to impact , so they wont pay for anything and I owe 500 for taking down transmission. I called shop owner right away asking if its possible , not being related to impact , he says of course not , otherwise your car wouldn't break after impact. He also said some technical explanation what caused it to break , i just don't know what. he also said that no one ever called him and asked him what was the cause if that. I dealt with progressive in Chicago twice , when i lived there , and i had greatest experience ever , but it seems that in Milwaukee , they are playing games , making me pay , and not taking responsibilities. All companies acknowledged their involvement in the cartels and agreed to settle the cases.

Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy said:“The Commission has sanctioned several companies for colluding in the maritime transport of cars and the supply of car parts.The three separate decisions taken today show that we will not tolerate anticompetitive behaviouraffecting European consumers and industries. By raising component prices or transport costs for cars, the cartels ultimately hurt European consumers and adversely impacted the competitiveness of the European automotive sector, which employs around 12 million people in the EU.”

Maritime car carriers

The European Commission found that the Chilean maritime carrier CSAV, the Japanese carriers “K” Line, MOL and NYK, and the Norwegian/Swedish carrier WWL-EUKOR participated in a cartel concerning intercontinental maritime transport of vehicles, and imposed a total fine of €395 million.

For almost 6 years, from October 2006 to September 2012, the five carriers formed a cartel in the market for deep sea transport of new cars, trucks and other large vehicles such as combine harvesters and tractors, on various routes between Europe and other continents.

The Commission’s investigation revealed that, to coordinate anticompetitive behaviour, the carriers’ sales managers met at each other’s offices, in bars, restaurants or other social gatherings and were in contact over the phone on a regular basis. In particular, they coordinated prices, allocated customers and exchanged commercially sensitive information about elements of the price, such as charges and surcharges added to prices to offset currency or oil prices fluctuations.

The carriers agreed to maintain the status quo in the market and to respect each other’s traditional business on certain routes or with certain customers, by quoting artificially high prices or not quoting at all in tenders issued by vehicle manufacturers.

The cartel affected both European car importers and final customers, as imported vehicles were sold within the European Economic Area (EEA), and European vehicle manufacturers, as their vehicles were exported outside the EEA. In 2016, some 3.4 million motor vehicles were imported from non-EU countries, while the EU exported more than 6.3 million vehicles to non-EU countries in 2016. Almost half of these vehicles were transported by the carriers that have been fined today.

The Commission’s investigation started with an immunity application submitted by MOL. During its investigation, the Commission cooperated with several competition authorities around the world, including in Australia, Canada, Japan and the US.

Fines

The fines were calculated on the basis of the Commission’s 2006 Guidelines on fines (see also MEMO).

In determining the fines, the Commission took into account the sales value on the intercontinental routes to and from the EEA achieved by the cartel participants for the transport services, the serious nature of the infringement, its geographic scope and its duration. The Commission also applied a 20% fine reduction for CSAV, to take into account its lesser involvement in the infringement.

Under the Commission’s 2006 Leniency Notice:

MOL received full immunity for revealing the existence of the cartel, thereby avoiding a fine of ca. €203 million.

CSAV, “K” Line, NYK and WWL-EUKOR benefited from reductions of their fines for their cooperation with the Commission. The reductions reflect the timing of their cooperation and the extent to which the evidence they provided helped the Commission to prove the existence of the cartel.

In addition, under the Commission’s 2008 Settlement Notice, the Commission applied a reduction of 10% to the fines imposed on the companies in view of their acknowledgment of the participation in the cartel and of their liability in this respect.

The breakdown of the fines imposed on each company is as follows:

Spark plugs

In a second decision, the Commission has found that Bosch (Germany), Denso and NGK (both Japan) participated in a cartel concerning supplies of spark plugs to car manufacturers in the EEA and imposed a total fine of €76 million.

Spark plugs are automotive electric devices built in petrol engines of cars, delivering high voltage electric sparks to the combustion chamber. Bosch, Denso and NGK’s customers are car manufacturers with production facilities in the EEA.

The cartel lasted from 2000 until 2011 and aimed at avoiding competition by respecting each other’s traditional customers and maintaining the existing status quo in the spark plugs industry in the EEA.

The three companies exchanged commercially sensitive information and in some instances agreed on the prices to be quoted to certain customers, the share of supplies to specific customers and the respect of historical supply rights. This coordination took place through bilateral contacts between Bosch and NGK, and between Denso and NGK.

The Commission’s investigation started with an immunity application submitted by Denso.

Fines

The fines were calculated on the basis of the Commission’s 2006 Guidelines on fines (see also MEMO).

In determining the fines, the Commission took into account the companies’ sales generated in the EEA from the supply of spark plugs to car manufacturers with production facilities in the EEA. The Commission also considered the serious nature of the infringement, its geographic scope and its duration. The Commission also applied a 10% fine reduction for Bosch and Denso, to take into account their lesser involvement in the infringement.

Under the Commission’s 2006 Leniency Notice:

Denso received full immunity for revealing the existence of the cartel, thereby avoiding a fine of ca. €1 million.

Bosch and NGK benefited from reductions of their fines for their cooperation with the investigation. The reductions reflect the timing of their cooperation and the extent to which the evidence they provided helped the Commission to prove the existence of the cartel.

In addition, under the Commission’s 2008 Settlement Notice, the Commission applied a reduction of 10% to the fines imposed in view of the parties’ acknowledgment of their participation in the cartel and of their liability in this respect.

Braking systems

In a third decision, the European Commission found two cartels relating to braking systems. The first concerned the supply of hydraulic braking systems (HBS) and involved TRW (USA, now ZF TRW, Germany), Bosch (Germany) and Continental (Germany). The second cartel concerned the supply of electronic braking systems (EBS) and involved Bosch and Continental. The Commission imposed a total fine of €75 million.

In both cartels, the three car part suppliers aimed at coordinating their market behaviour by exchanging sensitive information, including on pricing elements. The coordination took place at bilateral meetings and through phone conversations or email exchanges.

The first cartel lasted from February 2007 to March 2011 and related to discussions of general sales conditions of hydraulic braking systems for two customers, Daimler and BMW. The second cartel lasted from September 2010 to July 2011 and related to one specific tender for electronic braking systems for Volkswagen.

The Commission’s investigation in this case started with an immunity application by TRW.

Fines

The fines were calculated on the basis of the Commission’s 2006 Guidelines on fines (see also MEMO).

In setting the level of fines, the Commission took into account, in particular, the sales value in the EEA achieved by the cartel participants for the products in question, the serious nature of the infringement, its geographic scope and its duration.

Under the Commission’s 2006 Leniency Notice:

TRW received full immunity for revealing the HBS cartel, thereby avoiding a fine of ca. €54 million.

Continental received immunity for revealing the EBS cartel, thereby avoiding a fine of ca. €22 million for this cartel.

Bosch and Continental (for the cartel for which it did not receive immunity) benefited from reductions of their fines for their cooperation with the Commission investigation. The reductions reflect the timing of their cooperation and the extent to which the evidence they provided helped the Commission to prove the existence of the cartels in which they were involved.

Background

Article 101 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) and Article 53 of the EEA Agreement prohibit cartels and other restrictive business practices.

Today’s decisions concerning spark plugs and braking systems are part of a series of major investigations into cartels in the automotive parts sector. The Commission has already fined suppliers of automotive bearings ,wire harnesses in cars, flexible foam used (inter alia) in car seats, parking heaters in cars and trucks, alternators and starters, air conditioning and engine cooling systems,lighting systems, and occupant safety systems.

The settlement procedure

Today’s decisions are the 26th, 27th and 28th settlement decisions since the introduction of the settlement procedure for cartels in June 2008 (see press release and MEMO). Under a settlement, undertakings that have participated to a cartel acknowledge their participation in the infringement and their liability for it. The settlement procedure is based on the Antitrust Regulation 1/2003and allows the Commission to apply a simplified procedure and thereby reduce the length of the investigation. This is good for consumers and for taxpayers as it reduces costs; good for antitrust enforcement as it frees up resources to tackle other suspected cases; and good for the companies themselves that benefit from quicker decisions and a 10% reduction in fines.

Action for damages

Any person or company affected by anti-competitive behaviour as described in this case may bring the matter before the courts of the Member States and seek damages. The case law of the Court and Council Regulation 1/2003 both confirm that in cases before national courts, a Commission decision constitutes binding proof that the behaviour took place and was illegal. Even though the Commission has fined the cartel participants concerned, damages may be awarded without being reduced on account of the Commission fine.
