An extended jam clip of my Volca Sample lined through my Fender guitar amp for some distorted Electro breakbeat patterns I made, on top of my favourite part from Session 9 (2001 movie).

Oh snap fam here comes the Smithy Gang
New cover! Fight Against an Armed Boss, from Super Mario RPG! One of my all-time favorite soundtracks, so i hope I did it justice
this is a really short piece, so I played three loops and drastically changed the instrumentation each time:
first pass: synths! So many synths. I think… four? Ish? I had my Minilogue, my Artium Swarm, my Volca, and my Mega Synthesis (that one is specifically supposed to emulate the sound card from a Sega Genesis, so I found it amusing to have that be some of the leads on a piece from the SNES), and honestly I forget if I had any others or if I used any of those more than once.
second pass is when I brought in the weird stuff. That’s when I brought in the harp, a couple xylophones (it’s a Yoko Shimomura song so of course I had to do some mallet percussion!), the melodica, my bass taishogoto, and the Chompi (I sampled my voice and then mangled it until it turned into that ghostly choir).
third pass is the electric guitars!!
and of course there were a couple other instruments too (drums and such) but that’s the bulk of it. All in all, a lot more work than I originally expected, but I’m proud of the results!

October 15, 2020: Four years ago today, Corduroy Institute recorded an instrumental that would become "They Don't Even Know." Our first in-person collaboration since February of that year, the occasion signaled the start of the Lost October Sessions.
When S.A. Morin arrived at the O' Higgins Laboratory of Recorded Sound, W. Ruiz had a complex array of drum machines—Elektron Digitakt, Roland MC-707, Korg Volca Beats—synchronized via MIDI and plugged into the Tascam DP-24SD Digital Portastudio. The first musical layer involved the drum machines playing in tandem as S.A. Morin added a circular bassline on the Bass VI.
Tumblr media
For the song's melodic content, S.A. Morin relied on EHX Superego Plus pedal to guide his Bass VI into tremolo-rich tones reminiscent of a synth. W. Ruiz used the MC-707's pads to play a choir sound he crafted by layering built-in ROM tones from the unit atop his own custom samples.
Tumblr media
After completing this cathartic improvisation, we knew we hadn't lost our ability to craft instant compositions. New musical work followed in the ensuing days and months, and over the years this piece faded from memory.
As we took stock of the material we had on hand in the summer of 2023, this instrumental emerged from obscurity to become a contender for the album we were devising. We returned to the multitracks to make subtractive edits which yielded more dynamic and spacious drums.
"They Don't Even Know" can now be found on the second half of our latest album, Take the Train to Manchester. Nestled in between two other abstract pieces, it adds a counterpoint to the album's many lyric-driven experimental pop songs.

Week 9 - Lab Session
This week we got to do some songwriting in the new Synth Lab on campus, I found the session very engaging as I was forced into a place outside of my comfort zone. Normally I would just use a DAW to flesh out my ideas with a giant collection of drum kits, samples, VST instruments and loops, but today I was stuck to just one little machine (KORG Volca sample), a really old school Roland Synth, and a newer Roland Synth.
OneDrive Link: https://melbournepolytechnic-my.sharepoint.com/:u:/g/personal/s1541884_student_mp_edu_au/EWAWvVK6DYZLqqkj21XNTwIBcLA88J8EjQud0_In8kkbdw?e=KPyi5I
One thing I liked about using these instruments is that everything I recorded was Anolouge, and none of it was to a grid, which created a really organic feel. The 1st instrument I recorded was the Volca Sample and the controls on it took some learning, but essentially it made a whole bunch of beats and sounds to sound like a fully produced techno track, that could be made more complex and less complex with its different controllers. Although it wasn't on a grid I did match it to the grid in Ableton.
Tumblr media
I then used the old Roland Synth and found a nice fluty sort of clarinet sound and used it for a bass-sounding part. Because it wasn't on the grid it started making a pumping sidechain compression sound, without the sidechaining.
Then the newer Roland synth had some massive sounds, I just used the 1st preset that was in it, which had this really abrasive saw tooth like shrieking sound that would change pitch in an octave riser. After that sound started appearing randomly I added another layer of smoother bass to appear in and out of unison with the saw-tooth bass.
Tumblr media
The overall feel of this track was to use the analogue sounds and effects off the grid, so the instruments that appear are almost random, but also in unison. There was somewhat of a grid created by the Volca Sample, but I used the other instruments to move away from it.

#Jamuary2024: Day 19 - Melancholic
Have a moody jam with something that’s NOT the Volca Sample 2 accompanying the S-1.
this time it’s the NTS-1 accompanying the S-1 instead.

[ad_1] Korg arguably kickstarted one thing of a synth revolution when it introduced the Volca line. And the Volca FM has been a constant favourite within the sequence. (It was once additionally the primary "actual" synth I ever were given, so I've one thing of a cushy spot for it.) Now, some six 12 months later, the corporate is issuing an up to date type, the Volca FM 2. Just like the Volca Sample 2 it launched in 2020, this can be a most commonly incremental development at the earlier type, but it surely does deal with some ache issues.  Let's get started with what hasn't modified — the core six operator, 32 set of rules synth engine. The Volca FM stays an unabashedly conventional take at the Yamaha DX7. The shape issue may be unchanged, and you'll nonetheless energy it with six AA batteries. You additionally nonetheless get the similar 16-step sequencer with "movement sequencing". Bodily the adjustments are refined. The show is now blue eight-segment LEDs as an alternative of purple. The five-pin MIDI DIN has been changed with a TRS MIDI jack, however that has additionally made room for MIDI out, incase you need to keep an eye on different equipment with the Volca's sequencer. The large adjustments regardless that, are below the hood. For one the the Volca FM 2 is a six voice synth, as an alternative of a 3 voice one. That is an enormous exchange and lets you play larger, richer chords. And it now responds to pace over MIDI, one thing you principally needed a hack to get sooner than. There may be additionally a reverb impact integrated, along with the refrain. Slightly reverb is going far if you find yourself coping with a synth, particularly a virtual one. So that is some other very welcome improve. Finally Korg has added a randomization characteristic. This lets you briefly create new and distinctive sounds, with no need to grasp the arcane artwork of FM synthesis.  The Volca FM 2 is to be had to preorder lately for $170. All merchandise beneficial by way of Engadget are decided on by way of our editorial staff, unbiased of our dad or mum corporate. A few of our tales come with associate hyperlinks. If you are going to buy one thing thru the sort of hyperlinks, we would possibly earn an associate fee. [ad_2] #Korgs #Volca #synth #provides #voices #reverb #randomization

Here are a couple of photos from the start of my prototyping phase. I have also linked some videos too.  Initially I considered using exclusively the SP-404 but found that it was far too limiting and the workflow did not make for an interesting performance.  Then I tried sequencing it through the octatrack.  And whilst this did render interesting results I still felt it was too limiting and sampler based.  So I started using the Behringer 2600 as a synthesiser.  Initially it was sequenced by the Korg SQ-1 however I felt this was too limiting again due to the struggle of trying to link up the octatrack to play samples and drums along with it.   I also tried using thew Korg Volca beats for drums as that was much easier to sync with the SQ-1 along with the 2600 however I did not like the sound of the Volca beats at all and whilst it could’ve made my performance more interesting I preferred to use the octatrack as it allowed for more flexibility within my performance.  I then started using the octatrack to sequence the 2600 via midi and using the SQ-1 only to sequence one of the oscillators of the 2600 to create melodies on top of the initial sequence from the octa.  ONe big issue I had with setting up in this way was how to clock the SQ-1 to play in time with the octatrack as the octa does not have CV out at all.  My solution to this was to use the Cue out from the Octatrack as this wouldn't be heard in the performance.  I used a square wave clip sample with hard attack and release to create a signal that could be received as a CV signal in the SQ-1. I linked the machines via a jack to mini jack cable.  Because one of the oscillators was being used for melody I used the midi thru port of the 2600 to also clock a Korg Volca Bass to add further texture to the synths within the track and add some amount of bass.  Along with this I knew I wanted to use the SP-404 and/or a delay pedal of some kind.  For my first drafts of a piece with this setup I was using a zoom multi effects pedal for delay and no SP.  However I did not like the sound of the guitar pedal even with low input level the sound was still too distorted for me, so I then took inspiration from the Matt Karmil video where he uses the SP just as a reverb.  Whereas in my piece I use the SP for its delay which I found very effective.  I could then also fade it out and switch effects much easier which I will do in the final piece and switch it to the DJ effects looper to create a sort of build up.
