Concert week recap
It’s been a little bit now and I have had time to absorb everything. I tend to worry a lot leading up to activities and especially travel.
Tuesday was an odd day because it began like all others: take kids to the bus stop, start on some work, but then around 9:30 I left for Atlanta. Well, Covington to be exact. Months ago, when I saw that both Behemoth and Volbeat were doing dates with Slipknot, I asked my old middle school friend if they were going because a.) I know she and her husband are huge fans and b.) they live in the Atlanta area. They procured me a ticket and the day finally arrived. It was about four hours fifteen minutes until I got there and I remember how much it sucks getting from here to the city. Half the drive is rural Georgia roads with garbage speed limits. Anyway, she and I caught up for a bit then we took their son to be dropped off at a babysitter, then we made the roughly one hour drive to Alpharetta. We were basically JUST in time to see Behemoth start at 5:30. Atlanta traffic IS the worst.
It’s weird seeing a particularly dark band in the daylight but Behemoth rocked it. We were kind of in the upper bowl but it’s an amphitheater so all seats were decent. After them, we took a beer/taco break during Gojira because none of us are huge fans. When we got back, people were in our seats! Turned out we have found the wrong row T; we had “orchestra” T which was the next level down and much closer! We were just in time to see my favorite band, Volbeat, go on. And they were a-mazing live! I mean, dreams can come true, you guys. But more on THAT after my Thursday tale. So yes, Volbeat rocked and I was in heaven. After them, Slipknot and man, how have I avoided them in the 20 year span they’ve been a band? I don’t know! But the energy for their set was through the roof and I was never so tired as when we were done headbanging to their music. In fact, once we got out of the parking lot – and once I downed a ginormous water bottle – I passed the heck out.
It’s weird being away from my family. I am not normally the parent who goes out of town; my job never calls for it.
Thursday began the same way only I had a little more morning time. Around 1, I picked my oldest son up from school (after all, it was his turn for a concert) and we drove to Pensacola. Had dinner with my mom beforehand. My mom parked her car in a garage close to the venue and we walked to Vinyl; she then left us and waited for my dad to pick her up. This way, the car was there whenever Elliot and I finished. Doors were at 7 and we went in, thankful for the A/C because Pensacola was HOT. We soon met up with a girl I know from a Facebook Avatar fan page. She and I procured front row, er, seats? Nope, standing room only in this venue that has a max capacity of 525. That’s right, up close and personal. We stood in the merch line and talked to a bunch of other fans. Two bands played first, one called 68 and one called Like Machines. Both were quite good. Finally Avatar came on and WOW. I mean, I’ve wanted to see them live ever since I discovered them sometime in the Spring/Summer of 2018 but they were better than expected!
Being in some fan groups, I know how easy it is to meet them too so I took my little cards - I have Johannes and Jonas - and we went out to the side door/tour bus area and waited, oh, about 30 mins. Luckily, the rumors were true and the 20-25 of us who had patience were rewarded. Henrik came out first. I had him sign my battle jacket but didn’t ask for a pic or anything because I was nervous. John came out next and he was so damned nice, it was easy to ask. He made a comment to my son about his Ghost shirt and it was like, wow, this guy is our friend. Everyone was getting pics so both Ell and I got one with everyone after that. Tim, then Jonas, then finally Johannes came out. We had a nice little chat about the reality of pro wrestling and he tried to scare my child. Good times! I know it sounds creepy but they all gave amazing hugs and smelled great. LOL.
PLEASE DON’T USE MY PICS; THANKS!
Please overlook my dumb face in most of these pics. I was also super tired and the moment was surreal.
Tagging @ghuletteintraining and @girlwiththepapatattoo because after reading their amazing fanfic, I definitely went into meeting the guys with a, well, interesting outlook. ;) ;)

I’m gonna steal @incelhugochavez‘s idea and also make a list of covers I like better than originals
> Dream Theater’s Stargazer (originally Rainbow)
> Volbeat’s I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (originally Hank Williams)
> Fuel’s Daniel (originally Elton John)
> Vanden Plas’ Gethsemane (originally... well, Jesus Christ Superstar, in all its permutations)
> 30 Seconds to Mars’ Hunter (originally Björk)
> A Perfect Circle’s Imagine (originally... John Lennon or whoever, listen)
> Skunk Anansie’s Search and Destroy (originally the Stooges)
>> also while we’re talking about Sucker Punch I’m gonna go ahead and name Love is the Drug from that film, too (originally Roxy Music)
> Alex Boyé’s Hello (originally Adele)
> Metallica’s Turn the Page (originally Bob Seger)
> Marilyn Manson’s Sweet Dreams (originally the Eurythmics)
> Mother’s H.O.R.S. (House of the Rising Sun, originally the Animals. Mother is -- was...? -- a local band I sold merch for back when I did that, and I’m so upset their album isn’t on Spotify because I can’t live without this cover)
> does like 40% of Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s discography count, because
#i want y'all to know that i accidentally typed ''jesus christ superstore'' and laughed for a straight 30 seconds#that's just family christian stores innit#(a chain which incidentally is based in grand rapids. i really wish i didn't know that)#shadowsongs#i could have kept going but i didn't realise just how many covers i liked so i'm stopping here#singularity.txt

Volbeat Announces U.S. Dates of Rewind, Replay, Rebound World Tour for Spring 2020; Coming to The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory on April 10th
Today, multi-platinum Danish rock band Volbeat confirm 15 U.S. headlining dates on their “Rewind, Replay, Rebound World Tour” this April and May, bringing the tour to cities including Las Vegas, Nashville, Atlanta, Baltimore, and New York City. Special guests Clutch will be direct support on all dates, with the exception of the May 2nd Hershey, PA show which will feature direct support from Gojira. The Picturebooks will open each night on this tour. Ticket pre-sales begin Tuesday, January 14th and general on-sales begin Friday, January 17 at 10am local time here. A limited number of VIP packages will also be available for purchase and include meet & greet and photo opps, exclusive merch items and priority check in with early entry to the show and early access to merch. “We can’t wait to get back to the States and bring a full, headline-length Volbeat show to our U.S. fans,” said the band, “and we’re beyond ecstatic to have our great friends in Clutch and our new friends in The Picturebooks joining us for the ride. We will see you very, very soon!”
Additionally, the band will be headlining 98 KUPD’s UFEST 2020 April 4th at Big Surf in Tempe, AZ and will appear at FM99 WNOR’s Lunatic Luau alongside Disturbed on May 1st at Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater in Virginia Beach. Tickets for both shows go on sale on Friday, January 17. The band’s seventh studio album Rewind, Replay, Rebound is out now. For the album, Volbeat— Michael Poulsen (guitars/vocals), Rob Caggiano (guitars), Kaspar Boye Larsen (bass), and Jon Larsen (drums) —build upon the distinct, psychobilly, punk-tinged rock ‘n’ roll sound they are known for, while reaching for new creative summits. “The whole point for us going into the studio, is because you still have something to prove — not just for the fans, but mostly for yourself,” says Poulsen. “We would not be able to do this record if it wasn’t for the work we have done in the past. No matter how old the band gets or how many records we do, there is always going to be that signature sound.” Rewind, Replay, Rebound is available on all formats here, including a 2 CD deluxe edition, a special deluxe edition box set, and transparent and blue colored vinyl, numbered and limited to 1,000 copies each. So last night was...a thing.
I went to Knotfest Roadshow for the three acts that played before Slipknot. They’ve never been my thing, but how could I pass up Behemoth or Gojira? And Volbeat was pretty good too.
Slipknot...is too screamy for me. I love black metal and they still just sound like noise. I’ve tried and tried and I guess it’s just not for me. They’re too much of a “white middle class rage” band, if that makes sense. And the fans always scared me a little in general to the point I’d be wary if I saw a guy in their merch. And I realize that’s somewhat hypocritical of me. I know, I do.
But last night about halfway through their performance, some guys behind us on the lawn decided to set the grass on fire to have a “bonfire” to mosh around. They piled up trash and paper and lit that too. And then they just...went for it.
I’m MORE THAN FINE with pits, I’ve joined more than a handful myself lmao. And they even had specific areas roped off to encourage it too, though those weren’t near us so I understand why another started where it did.
I don’t understand setting the lawn where thousands of people are on fire.
So my night ended with me hightailing it away from said fire and being too freaked out to properly fall asleep.
I mean, the first three bands were great. But my impressions of Slipknot and its fans have not changed.

Everything you need to know about Lollapalooza Argentina
Lollapalooza Argentina is held annually at the Hipodromo de San Isidro in the heart of Buenos Aires. Over the years Lollapalooza Argentina has expanded and transformed itself into the most popular festival held in Argentina, and probably South America. In 2017 over 200,000 people attended the 2-day event, and it sold out completely. This year the festivals 5th edition will be taking place from March 16-18. 2018 looks a lot like 2017 as 3-day festival passes and day 1 tickets are officially sold out. This is a guide for all you gringos heading to Argentina ;)
Lineup
This years lineup consists of artists from almost every genre and I think it caters to almost anyone's tastes. Whether you’re a die-hard rock n’ roll, EDM, or hip-hop fan, Lollapalooza has something to offer you. The 2018 headliners are Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, and Pearl Jam. Our favorite supporting artists are as follows, Mac De Marco, Liam Gallagher, The National, Metronomy, LCD Soundsystem, Milky Chance, David Bryne, Spoon, and The Neighborhood. You can find the festivals full lineup here.
Tickets
3-day festival passes and day 1 tickets are sold out however you can still purchase tickets for days 2 and 3. The official ticket vendor is AllAccess. If you’re looking for 3-day tickets you should try searching on Facebook and Twitter, StubHub should be your last resort. Single day tickets cost $1990 Argentine Pesos ($100 USD). Get your tickets here.
5 Stages
Lollapalooza has 5 stages. Main Stage 1 and 2, Perrys Stage, the Alternative Stage, and the Kidzapalooza Stage. If you’re into DJ’s and EDM that’s whats on at Perry’s Stage all day and night. Kidzapalooza is a stage and area for kids. Kids up until the age of 10 can get in the festival for free.
Cashless
Lollapalooza is a ‘cashless’ festival. That means you can’t pay cash for food, merch, and drinks. Festival bracelets are used to pay for stuff, you can add money to your wristband before the festival or at the festival. There will be booths at the festival where you can put money on your bracelet with either cash or your credit card. Add money to your wristband (if you already have it) here.
Getting there
Lollapalooza offers various ways for getting to the festival. Lollapalooza has a parking lot however that has to be purchased online via All Access. You could also park your car around the Hipodromo de San Isidro, but if you plan on doing this make sure to arrive early. Getting a taxi is another way, but it might be complicated to get a driver when the festival ends so make sure to figure something out. The train line ‘Mitre’ has a stop in San Isidro (a short walk to the festival) so it is possible to arrive at the festival via train from downtown Buenos Aires or Tigre. More train info can be found here. Another alternative for getting to the festival is by bus. Lines 60, 15, and 21 will get you where you need to be.
Hotels
If you're traveling to the festival and are looking for a place to stay, here are some nice hotels in the San Isidro area. Click on the name of the hotels to visit their website. San Isidro Plaza Hotel, Hotel Del Casco, Hotel Alto, and Villa Isidro. Downtown Buenos Aires is 25-40 minutes away from the festival so when you’re booking a hotel that isn’t in San Isidro keep that in mind.
Tips
Lollapalooza Argentina is a massive event and in past years organizers haven’t really been able to do a good job. If you want to have a good experience I recommend getting to the festival early so that it doesn’t take an hour to get in. It's also a good idea to buy water bottles and eat food early. At night when everyone arrives, you’ll have to wait about an hour to get food and water. If you’ve never been to a festival or concert in Argentina then get ready for the best moshpits and crowds in the world. Argentine people have so much energy and they all jump a lot. If you’re not into rough crowds then stay in the back for the headliners because it’s going to be insane. So many people pass out so try and stay hydrated and safe. Countless phones get robbed at the festival every year, avoid this by getting a fanny pack or small bag that you can keep safe so this doesn’t happen.
Sideshows
If festivals just aren’t your thing, or you’d just rather see your favorite band in a more intimate venue, these sideshows are for you. Sideshows are held in various venues around the city of Buenos Aires and happen either before or after the festival. Below we’ve listed all the sideshows. Tickets here.
Liam Gallagher @ DirectTV Arena on March 14
Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals @ Niceto Club on March 14
Metronomy @ Teatro Vorterix on March 15
Zara Larson + Oh Wonder @ Niceto Club March 15
David Bryne @ Teatro Gran Rex on March 19

Hopefully this gringo guide helps you out and we hope to see you in the pogo!
