I'm not convinced this will outright nuke the platform in its immediacy, but so much of this is a bad idea that will kill it LONG term. They're attempting to homogenize the platform to get its features working on WordPress.
I'm calling it now they're absolutely doing this to push all of its userbase onto WordPress so that they can liquidate Tumblr's assets and potentially either downscale development of it or shut it down entirely. Naturally I have no hard proof of that but I do have conjecture worth pointing out from both the current situation and similar occurrences.
Look at Skype: Microsoft did exactly that to create Teams. It bought out THE most potently popular social networking app on the market at the time. After ripping through it with ads, features no one asked for and letting the actual infrastructure of the app's VOIP feature and chat functionality waste away (recall just how bad the voice chat quality and stability was before the mass exodus of users)? They gutted the project entirely, cannibalized its features and made a new applet in its place that was proprietary and gave Microsoft complete control over it: Teams.
With Tumblr hemorrhaging money due to their continued incompetence both on a moderation standpoint (there are still so many obvious cases of favoritism and dog-piling, especially regarding trans people) and a monetization level due to their incessant shoving of ads that still have zero oversight and a subscription service that provides so little value... Well, you can see why I'm watching this with a rather scornful eye. WordPress is Automattic's bread and butter. And after the current Tumblr CEO had a very vocal portion of the userbase (rightfully, in my opinion) absolutely rip him apart for his site's treatment of trans women and his frankly embarrassing responses to all of the commentary? Why would any tech company CEO want to hold onto something their users clearly spite them over?
Note: this is CONJECTURE. I cannot, for anything said, state this is the end-all, be-all state of affairs for their plans.
But I'm backing my blog up nonetheless, and I recommend you do so, too.
automattic's made a ton of blunders recently but i hope they're not gonna try something like convert tumblr to run on wordpress, a project that both tumblr and wordpress engineers agreed would be a lot of work for no gain (most likely worse performance). that would be a silly thing to do.
