A Forel ("Trout") Hydrosuit, manufactured by RD & PE Zvezda, ca. 1970
Launched on April 22, 1971, Soyuz 10 was piloted by Commander Shatalov, Flight Engineer Yeliseyev, and Systems Engineer Rukavishnikov. Soyuz 10 launched into an orbit on the same plane as Salyut (71-032A), but required orbital corrections that took 24 hours to prepare for the rendezvous of the two spacecraft. The first ever space station, Salyut was un-crewed and the challenges of docking with a large, un-crewed station were different than those previous cosmonauts had faced in the joining of two Soyuz, in which both Soyuz crafts were able to adjust their position. In addition to the test of spacecraft docking, Soyuz 10 also used new telemetry systems, new rendezvous systems, and new docking equipment.
On April 23, 1971, the three Soyuz 10 cosmonauts became the first astronauts to ever dock with a space station, but could not transfer to Salyut due to an issue with the docking equipment. They remained "soft" docked to Salyut for 5.5 hours but could not fully "hard" dock to the station due to technical malfunctions. Shatalov also found difficulty un-docking their spacecraft due to a faulty hatch, and had to attempt un-docking multiple times before being able to retrofire their engines and return to Earth. During the landing, the Soyuz air supply grew toxic enough that one of the crew, Rukavishnikov passed out.
The landing in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, the first night (pre-dawn) landing of a crewed spacecraft, was a success and did not require the use of the hydrosuit.
Nevertheless, this hydrosuit carried by Soyuz 10 pilot Commander Vladimir Shatalov is not only an important artifact in the history of spaceflight but also a testament to both human courage and ingenuity to face challenges never before attempted.

RIP cosmonaut Vladimir Shatalov (1927-2021) June 15, 2021 Russian cosmonaut and former Director of the Cosmonaut Training Centre Vladimir Shatalov passed away aged 93… he flew on three spaceflight missions: Soyuz 4, 8 and 10. In 1971, during Soyuz 10 training, we see cosmonaut Shatalov was wearing a Rolex GMT-master 1675 pilot watch while his colleagues Yeliseyev & Rukavishnikov wore Russian Strela chronographs. A few year later in July 1973 and September 1974, NASA photos show that  Shatalov was still wearing his Rolex GMT-master pilot watch during ASTP-training at JSC Houston in the USA. (Photo: TASS)

April 1971, the Soyuz 10 crew during training for the first mission to visit the Salyut 1 space station. It looks like Flight engineers Aleksei Yeliseyev & Nikolai Rukavishnikov wore the familiar Strela “Arrow” caliber 3017 military issue wrist watch... But it looks like Commander Vladimir Shatalov was wearing a Rolex GMT wrist watch ? (Photo: TASS)

3/20/73: "Soviet cosmonauts Aleksei S. Yeliseyev, left, and Vladimir A. Shatalov, right, get together with U.S. astronaut Thomas Stafford to look over a model of the linked up Apollo-Soyuz spacecrafts. The two cosmonauts are with a group of Soviet scientists and engineers that is at the Johnson Space Center in Houston to work out the details of the joint space mission which is scheduled for 1975. The two are candidates for the Soviet crew that is to be named soon. They met Stafford, who will team with Donald Slayton and Vance Brand on U.S. crew, Sunday."
(The Soviet crewmen eventually chosen for the ASTP mission were Alexei Leonov and Valeri Kubasov.)

I almost forgot about Soyuz 11! Today in 1971 the crew of Soyuz 11; Georgi Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov and Viktor Patsayev; died during landing as a result of their Soyuz depressurizing (among other problems). They were the first crew to stay on a space station, Salyut 1.
This photo is after the press conference that confirmed Volkov, Dobrovolsky and Patsayev as the Soyuz 11 crew. The original crew was taken off when it was discovered on a X-ray that crew member Valery Kubasov might have tuberculosis. Left to right: Volkov, Dobrovolsky, head of cosmonaut training Nikolai Kamanin, Patsayev, Vladimir Shatalov and Nikolai Rukavishnikov, both of the Soyuz 10 crew.

50 years ago... ASTP at Star City - Moscow 1972, October 7 to 19 visit of the NASA delegation to the cosmonaut training center “Star City” 30 kilometers north-east of Moscow. After a Russian delegation had visited NASA facilities in July 1972, a 27 person strong NASA delegation was invited to visit Star City in preparation of ASTP - Apollo Soyuz Test Project. Note that cosmonaut Andriyan Nikolayev wore a Rolex GMT-master 1675 Pepsi pilot watch on a steel oyster bracelet. Nikolayev was pictured wearing a Rolex GMT-master between 1965 and 1975. During 1970s cosmonaut training, cosmonaut Vladimir Shatalov was also pictured wearing the steel GMT-master Pepsi pilot watch, which he also wore during ASTP-training in 1973 to 1975. Still trying to find out how these ended up behind the Iron Curtain, possibly a gift by visiting astronauts to Starcity? (Photo: TASS/NASA)
