Charlie Buck: "did you hear the story of when the bonzos were all driving to a gig in the US and got pulled over. The cop asked if they had got any guns because they would need them where they were going. Viv said “we’re English, we don’t need guns, we’re armed with charm and good manners!”."

"A 'Midas' guitar amplifier, from the collection of Vivian Stanshall, founding member of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, green-painted and modified to resemble a naked female torso, 63 cm x 61 cm. ... There used to be 2 rubber bicycle horn bulbs in position either side as breasts. ... It was quite an avant garde concept to have all those built in effects contained within the actual amp. In those days they tended to be pedals and outboard items rather than integral with an amp."

Bloodhound Gang, the 90's – these two belong together so much the group doesn't function outside the epoch. We forget the period influences their musicians more often than usual. I mean, could Vivian Stanshall have a possible career outside the 70's? Sure, the 60's with his band shouldn't be discounted, yet the latter followed the protocols of the way bands must be, whereas his 70's work seems to be beholden to whatever the era attempted to convey. Mind you, his work then felt close to the zeitgeist without mirroring that too much. There was this eccentricity, which was still seen as a profitable commodity back then, though here's you problem – this feature did little commercially outside the 70's. Thus, Vivian Stanshall made more sense then.

Tubular Bells, het eerste album van de Britse muzikant Mike Oldfield, werd vandaag precies vijftig jaar geleden uitgebracht.
