Iglesia de Santiago del Arrabel - Toledo The church of Santiago del Arrabel in Toledo is one of the finest examples of the Mudéjar style in this city. It was built in the mid-13th century, about 260 years after the conquest of Toledo by forces of the Christian Kingdom of Castile-León. The Mudéjar style incorporated stylistic elements and constructive techniques of Moorish art and architecture and mixed it with the Romanesque and later Gothic styles of the Christian cultures. This style remained popular in the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula well into the 15th century. After its conquest by Castile the city of Toledo flourished as an important centre of intellectual and cultural exchange between Muslims, Jews and Christians. However, forced conversions, persecutions and even massacres of the Jewish and Muslim populations by Christians would soon put an end to that era. Cristo de la Luz - Toledo The interior of the former ‘Mezquita Bab-al-Mardum’ (999-1000) in Toledo is dominated by four column that divide the space into nine bays, each with its own vault. Each column is capped with a capital, as seen on photo 1; these might originate from an older Visigothic structure. The horseshoe arches supported by the columns are typical for the Islamic architecture of the Iberian Peninsula. Each of the nine vaults has its own design composed of ribs, such as the one seen on photo 2. These vaults are miniature versions of those of the great mosque of Córdoba.
