THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY
based on: The White Crane Institute's 'Gay Wisdom', Gay Birthdays, Gay For Today, Famous GLBT, glbt-Gay Encylopedia, Today in Gay History, Wikipedia, and more … October 24
44 BC – Italy: The first written reference to same-sex marriage appears when Cicero insults promiscuous Mark Antony whose father Curio "established you in a fixed and stable marriage, as if he had given you a stola." A stola is a traditional garment worn by married Roman women. Cicero’s sexual implications are clear, the point of which is to cast Antony in the submissive role in the relationship and to impugn his manhood.
1796 – The poems of Count August von Platen (d.1835) are homoerotic expressions of Platonic love, idealism, beauty, friendship, and longing. Platen was born in Ansbach, Bavaria, the son of an impoverished nobleman. He attended the Military Academy at Munich and the Royal Institute of Pages resulting in his commission as a lieutenant in 1815 in a regiment against France during the time of Napoleon; he, however, engaged in no action.
Platen was extremely erudite, mastering a dozen languages, including literary Greek and Latin, French for social status, Persian for poetic reasons, and even English.
An admirer of Michelangelo and Italian art, Platen visited Florence, Rome, Naples, Syracuse, and Sicily. While in Naples in the 1820s, he formed a homosexual friendship with the poet and painter August Kopisch, all the while perfecting the content and form of his poetry. By 1826, he had moved permanently to Italy, supported by a pension from his friend, King Ludwig I of Bavaria.
Focusing his sexual urges into the artistic and creative realms, Platen transformed his passion for same-sex relations from the physical to the intellectual. On occasion, a friendship lasted only a year or so—for example, his intense relationship with a young painter, Rühl—but it nevertheless served to heighten his creative powers.
His controversial, multilingual, autobiographical narrative, which contains an explicitly erotic homosexual theme, was not published until the end of the nineteenth century, under the title Diary (Die Tagebücher, 1896-1900). In his poetry, Platen employs a recurrent homoerotic image borrowed from Persian poetry, the tulip, which is a spiritual symbol for masculine love.
Platen's longing for love and friendship is a persistent motif in his work. He addressed seven sonnets to "Cardenio," an Erlangen student, who is described as a young, tall, dark, and handsome man with full lips. Platen addressed an additional twenty-one sonnets to another Erlangen student, "Karl Theodor German." Embodying themes of Platonic love, friendship, longing, idealism, and beauty, Platen's sonnets express unrequited love for men.
Platen's homosexuality is the subject of a vicious attack by Heinrich Heine in The Baths of Lucca. Edward Carpenter, however, expressed his appreciation for Platen in his Ioälus, An Anthology of Friendship (1902). Among German writers who admired Platen is Thomas Mann, who praised him in a lecture in 1930; Platen's poem "Tristan" (1825) inspired Mann's novella Tristan and Isolde (1903).
1820 – Seventeen year old Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote of his crush on fifteen-year old Martin Gay: I begin to believe in the Indian doctrine of eye fascination. The cold blue eyes of (blank) has so intimately connected him in my thoughts & visions that a dozen times a day & as often by night I find myself wholly wrapped up in conjectures of his character and inclinations. We have already two or three long profound stares at each other. Be it wise or weak or superstitious I must know him.
1933 – Ronnie Kray (d.1995) and his twin brother Reggie Kray (d.2000) were the foremost perpetrators of organised crime in London's East End during the 1950s and 1960s.
Ronald, commonly referred to as Ron or Ronnie, most likely suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. The Krays were involved in armed robberies, arson, protection rackets, violent assaults including torture and the murders of Jack "The Hat" McVitie and George Cornell.
As West End nightclub owners, they mixed with prominent entertainers including Diana Dors, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and politicians. The Krays were highly feared within their social environment, and in the 1960s they became celebrities in their own right, being photographed by David Bailey and interviewed on television.
Ronnie was definitely gay - and Reggie may have been. During his life, Ronnie Kray was openly gay, refusing to hide his orintation from either the law or his fellow gangsters, but sometimes claimed to be merely bisexual - a nod to the disapproving social attitudes at the time.
"Ron discussed his homosexuality with only a very few people, but put simply it was a part of his nature he discovered, explored and enjoyed," biographer Laurie O'Leary said. "He was at ease with it. It did not seem to conflict with his "tough guy" image or cause him any problems on any level."
The members of the twins' gang, known as the Firm, were overwhelmingly tolerant of Kray's homosexuality. "Even if they objected, Ron just smiled at them and told them they didn't know what they were missing," said O'Leary.
Author John Pearson, who interviewed then both extensively, says Ronnie Kray was gay and that Reggie Kray was bisexual. He said they had an incestuous sexual relationship with each other because they could not be open about their sexualities.
Pearson said in a book about the twins: "Homosexuality was nothing to be proud of in the East End. But as they became more notorious, Ronnie became quite shameless about it. According to Ron in the early days they had sex with each other because they were terrified about people finding out."
Pearson has written three books on the subject of the infamous twins, and claims that Ronnie told him about the relationship during on of many interviews. "According to Ron, for quite a while they were so concerned to keep their secret hidden that the only sex they had was with each other."
Ronnie's homosexuality came into the public eye when an exposé in the tabloid newspaper Sunday Mirror alleged that Ron had had a sexual relationship with Lord Boothby, a UK Conservative Party politician. Although no names were printed, when the twins threatened the journalists involved in the story and Boothby threatened to sue, the newspaper backed down, sacked its editor, printed an apology and paid Boothby £40,000 in an out-of-court settlement. As a result, other newspapers were unwilling to uncover the Krays' connections and criminal activities.
The police investigated the Krays on several occasions, but the twins' reputation for violence meant witnesses were afraid to come forward to testify. There was also a political problem for both main parties. It was in the interests of neither the Conservative Party to press the police to end the Krays' power lest the Boothby connection was again publicised and demonstrated, nor the Labour Party as their MP Tom Driberg was also rumoured to have had a relationship with Ron.
They were eventually arrested on 9 May 1968 and convicted in 1969 by the efforts of a squad of detectives led by Detective Superintendent Leonard "Nipper" Read, and were both sentenced to life imprisonment. Ronnie remained in Broadmoor Hospital until his death on 17 March 1995, but Reggie was released from prison on compassionate grounds in August 2000, eight weeks before his death from cancer.
Reggie was closeted, although Ronnie had often claimed his brother too was bisexual. After his death a former gang member, Bradley Allardyce, claimed that he and Reggie had been more than just good friends. He spent three years in Maidstone Prison, four cells along the landing from Reggie Kray, who was serving life for the murder of Jack 'the hat' McVitie. Both denied they were more than just friends, until after Reggie's death in 2000, when Allardyce stated "I am openly admitting for the very first time that we had a sexual relationship."
Ronnie Kray was openly gay but Reggie always denied what many suspected - that he was also attracted to men. Friends of Kray consider Allardyce to be the love of his life. They spent most of their time at Maidstone Prison in each other's company.
1960 – Bradley Darryl BD Wong is an American actor, best-known for his roles as Dr. George Huang on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as Father Ray Mukada on HBO's Oz, Henry Wu in the movie Jurassic Park, and for his starring role as Song Liling in the Broadway production of M. Butterfly.
Wong gained attention for his Broadway debut in M. Butterfly opposite John Lithgow. The play won multiple awards, including several for Wong. He is notable as the only actor to be honored with the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Clarence Derwent Award, and Theatre World Award for the same role.
In 2008, he starred in the one-man show Herringbone, in which he portrays 11 roles, at the McCarter Theatre at Princeton University.
Wong, who is openly gay, began a long-term relationship with talent agent Richie Jackson in 1988. In 2000, Wong had twin sons: Boaz Dov, who died 90 minutes after birth, and Jackson Foo Wong. They were born through a surrogate mother, using Wong's sperm and an egg donated by Jackson's sister. In 2003, Wong wrote a memoir about his experiences with surrogacy titled Following Foo: the Electronic Adventures of the Chestnut Man. Wong and Jackson ended their relationship in 2004.
Wong very strongly identifies as a gay man. Hence, he has been a visible presence at AIDS-related charity functions and in gay and lesbian community events, as well as at events sponsored by the Asian Pacific Islander communities. Wong has appeared at the GLAAD Awards, made promotional spots for the gay and lesbian television newsmagazine In the Life, and worked in various ways to further understanding among both Asians and non-Asians, gays and non-gays, about the experience of being both gay and Asian.
1972 – Van Darkholme is a Vietnamese American gay pornographic actor, director, an artist and photographer.
Darkholme is among the few Asian American men working in Western gay porn as a director and actor, and is of Vietnamese descent. Much of his work as a director and actor contains bondage and particularly shibari, the Japanese art of rope bondage, a specialty within BDSM cultures. Van Darkholme (sometimes misspelled as "Darkholm") is a screen name; his birth name has been kept private.
Throughout the 1990s, Darkholme was a fashion and photographic model. Darkholme's book of bondage photography, Male Bondage, was published by Bruno Gmünder in June 2006. In 2008, The San Francisco-based BDSM studio Kink.com hired Darkholme, where he currently directs gay pornography with an emphasis on bondage and wrestling. Darkholme self-identifies as a gay man.
1980 – (Zachary E.) Zac Posen is an American fashion designer.
Posen was born and raised to a Jewish family in New York City, residing in the SoHo neighborhood of lower Manhattan. He is the son of Susan (née Orzack), a corporate lawyer, and Stephen Posen, an artist. His interest in fashion design started early, and as a child he would steal yarmulkes from his grandparents' synagogue to make ball dresses for dolls.
He attended a private school in Brooklyn and in his sophomore year interned with fashion designer Nicole Miller. As a teen, he also won a Scholastic Art and Writing Award. At age 16 he enrolled in the pre-college program at Parsons The New School for Design. For three years, Posen was mentored by curator Richard Martin at The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. At age 18, he was accepted into the womenswear degree program at London's Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design at the University of the Arts London. In 2001, Posen constructed a gown entirely made from thin leather strips and dressmaker hooks and eyes that was displayed by the Victoria and Albert Museum and featured in their "Curvaceous" exhibition.
Upon returning to New York in 2001, Posen set up an atelier in his parents' living room, while they gave him a USD$15 allowance. In October of the same year, he was chosen to present a capsule collection as part of GenArt's Fresh Faces in Fashion New York 2001. He received a grant for $20,000. After his first runway show in 2001, Posen was courted by fashion titans Yves Carcelle, president of LVMH Fashion Group; Sidney Toledano, CEO and director of Christian Dior S.A.; and Domenico De Sole, president and CEO of Gucci Group NV. Following the success of this presentation, Posen established his design studio in Tribeca.
In 2004, high-end urban fashion brand Sean John made an investment deal with Posen. Ashley Olsen interned with Posen in 2005 while a student at The Gallatin School of Individualized Study, an undergraduate college within New York University.
In April 2008, Posen's capsule collection created in collaboration with Target, Zac Posen for Target, was released in 75 stores in Australia. A preview of the collection was shown during March's L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.
At the 2012 Academy Awards, Glenn Close wore a Posen gown on the red carpet, as did both Reese Witherspoon and Naomi Watts at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards. Other notables who have worn Posen creations on red carpets include Uma Thurman at the 2013 Met Ball); Sofia Vergara at the 2014 Golden Globes; Anna Chlumsky at the 2014 Emmy Awards; and Rita Ora at the 2014 AMA Awards. On December 18, 2012, Posen was announced as an official judge of Project Runway Season 11 on Lifetime Television.
In February 2014, Posen partnered with another major retailer, David's Bridal, to create Truly Zac Posen, a line of affordable bridal gowns. The line was Posen's first official bridal collection. Also in 2014, he was named Creative Director for Brooks Brothers, tapped to modernize their signature women's clothing and accessories line. In 2014, he introduced a more casual Pre-Fall 2015 Trunk Show collection.
In recent collaborations, Posen was selected to redesign the uniforms for Delta Air Lines 60,000 employees. These uniforms are set to appear on Delta Air Lines staff members, from flight attendants to customer service, in 2017.
Posen lives in the SoHo neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, with his boyfriend, Christopher Niquet and their three dogs.
1981 – The first National Conference on Lesbian and Gay Aging was held in California, sponsored by the National Association for Gay and Lesbian Gerontology. It sought to "dispel myths about older lesbians and gay men, advance research, establish programs and services for lesbian and gay elders, and encourage and provide support for lesbian and gay gerontologists."

VPN-Datenschutz

This dude really thinks he can teach women and Muslims to be more "modern". And a man agrueing that fucked up hormone levels are enough to compete against women.
A 72-year-old trans-identifying biological male from Germany has been allowed to change the sex on their birth certificate to female, with the government agency that handles such documents recognizing them as having been "born a woman."
Manuela Donner, a former school teacher with seven children who also identifies as a liberal Muslim feminist, began transitioning after retirement and only started practicing Islam last year.
"I was always a woman, but I didn't live it openly," Donner explained during an interview with northern German outlet NWZ, adding that they underwent a full medical transition as a senior.
While Donner claimed that outside of their family, the reaction has been positive, but noted that their children expressed a range of emotions. Some were accepting, while others flat-out rejected that their papa had decided to become a mama.
According to NWZ, it was during a trip to Morocco that the East Frisia resident first fell in love with Islam, and though Donner visited every year since then, it wasn't until 2023, at the age of 71, that they ditched their Christian heritage and converted.
Now, Donner is committed to living life as a Muslim woman, even going so far as to wear a hijab while out in public and refrain from consuming pork and alcohol. Per Islamic doctrine, however, they take it off inside their home.
"They are often stuck in the seventh century," Donner said of Muslims, adding that "Islam is still a male-dominated society today." They went on to cite a variety of examples, such as separate prayer rooms for each gender in mosques.
Donner said they want to change society's perception of the religion by showing that it can accommodate those with more liberal, feminist attitudes.
Germany is among the few countries in the world where, thanks to a recently passed law, residents can change their sex to match their gender identity on official documents.
By Reduxx Team April 6, 2024
A trans-identified male in Germany has become the first to be approved by the Bavarian Football Association (BFA) to play in a women’s football league. Laura Hannah Holstein, 25, was the subject of a glowing profile in the Main-Post after joining the Effeltrich/Hetzles Football Syndicate.
According to the article, Holstein, who is a Master’s Student at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, was given the ability to participate after Grit Labahn, the head of policy at the Munich BFA headquarters, personally vouched for him.
“I can’t tell people who have a different, non-binary gender identity and want to play football: You were unlucky,” Labahn said. Though there are only male and female categories in German football, the BFA has a “case-by-case inclusion policy, so Labahn explains she had to argue for Holstein’s right to participate in the women’s league.
Labahn said that an opening had emerged in the club after a trans-identified female had decided to opt out due to the fact that testosterone was making her too strong to participate with the other women. Labahn then “turned the tables,” arguing that estrogen had caused Holstein to “lose” muscle mass and would have stripped him of a competitive advantage.
Labahn then compiled additional information, using the cases of South African runner Caster Semenya and New Zealand powerlifter Laurel Hubbard to bolster her case.
“It was clear to me that we can justify a case-by-case decision by means of the hormone levels,” Labahn said, excitedly noting that allowing Holstein to compete with the women has created a type of “blueprint” they can use for future cases.
“We will certainly not revise our decision even if hostilities come. On the contrary: I can only encourage trans people to dare to go public and play football,” Labahn explained.
Holstein reportedly began identifying as a woman after watching The Danish Girl in 2015. The film is based on the life story of Lili Elbe, a trans-identified male who died of complications after his body rejected a uterus implanted into him in 1931. Following the movie, Holstein says he was “touched extremely internally. I questioned what I really feel deep inside.” He then says he “discovered the woman” within himself.
In 2020, Holstein began hormone replacement therapy and laser hair removal. He is set to legally change his sex to “female” in September of this year.
In his profile by Main-Post, Holstein is described as “discreetly masculine at first glance,” something the author attributes to his “high forehead.” The author also describes Holstein’s “breast gently emerging under [his] jersey.”
Holstein is apparently unconcerned about his appearance, questioning “what is so hard to understand about it: I’m just a woman who looks different. Why should I flaunt excessive femininity?”
While Holstein won’t officially begin playing against opposing women’s teams until the August season, he has begun participating in training sessions, and is sharing the female locker room with the women and girls on the Effeltrich/Hetzles Football Syndicate.
As some players are underage, concerns were raised about Holstein exposing his penis during shower times — an issue the coach attempted to address by providing Holstein a shower schedule.
The coach, Christian Wagner, is also preempting “transphobic” remarks from other players or spectators, and says that anyone who is discriminatory towards Holstein will be immediately banned from the arena.
Wagner has also admitted that there are certain “anatomical advantages” Holstein has that he expects him to use to the team’s advantage as a goalkeeper, and boasted: “If I were a woman, I wouldn’t want to play against Laura!”
Concerns surrounding trans-identified males participating in women’s football have been raised by women’s rights advocates over the past two years, with multiple instances of women being injured while competing against men emerging.
As previously reported by Reduxx, 24 women recently dropped out of a football league in Australia after a team with five trans-identified males began dominating the women’s league. Some female athletes had also been left severely injured by competing against the men, including one woman who had her leg broken in two places after being tackled by a male player.
In 2022, an “LGBTQ+ Inclusive” football team in Ireland similarly came under fire after beating out the female competition in the Junior J Shield Final, claiming a significant margin of victory that many attributed to the participation of an adult male. Giulia Valentino, 39, later went on to win an LGBTQ+ Sports Award.
#Germany#Islamophobia made woke#Men transitioning late in life#Men thinking they can improve something they haven't really studied#A man may legally be a woman but his chromosomes are still XY#Bavarian Football Association (BFA)#Laura Hannah Holstein is a man#Trans athletes may have altered their hormone level but if they went through male puberty they have advantages#Denser bones#Bigger lungs

🎧 Johannes Menath - Moderne Propaganda

Bayet and Krantz: 16 Words (Part 1)
by Joann Wilson and Albert Kollar
In June of 1903, William Holland, Director of the Carnegie Museum, seized a rare chance to acquire one of the finest private collections in all of Europe. The purchase was made with sixteen words. Within in Holland’s Archives at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History Library, on onion paper so fragile that it appears to float, is a carbon copy of the telegram that influenced the early history of the Paleontology Department. Mysteriously, only one name appears on this fateful cable, and it is not a name that you would expect. The name is “Krantz,” Dr. Friedrich Krantz of Bonn, Germany.
Dr. Friedrich Krantz sitting in the conservatory, or wintergarten, at his villa in Germany, (date unknown). Permission of Ursula Müller-Krantz, Executive Director, Dr. F. Krantz.
In 1859, Friedrich Krantz was born into a family that operated a geological supply business. In 1888, Krantz graduated with a PhD in geology from the University of Erlangen. That same year, he joined “Dr. A Krantz,” the company founded by his uncle, Adam August Krantz. By 1891, Friedrich Krantz took charge and changed the company name to “Dr. F. Krantz, Rheinisches Mineraliaen Contor.” The company continues operations to this day out of headquarters in Bonn.
Exactly when Ernest Bayet of Brussels and Friedrich Krantz met is uncertain. But thanks to the letters and fossil lists that arrived with the Bayet collection, we know that they corresponded at least three times. The difficult task of translating these documents into English is being handled by volunteer Lucien Schoenmakers, a resident of the Netherlands. Schoenmakers’ translation work here and with other records is contributing critical information to the Section of Invertebrate Paleontology’s multiyear project to fully document the invertebrate portion of the Bayet Collection.
From the archive, we know that Krantz visited Bayet at least once. On July 7th, 1897, Krantz wrote, “I intend to come to Brussels towards the end of next week and will be honored to visit you, I can use the numbered list to give you the exact individual prices for all the objects displayed by me.”
In fact, Bayet may have selected Krantz to act as his agent for the sale because he was so familiar with it. Krantz sold many museum quality specimens to Bayet; many with distinctive, elegant labels.
Encrinus liliiformis Miller (CM 29840): a Triassic crinoid from Brunswick, Germany with Krantz label.
The sale of Baron Ernest Bayet’s fossil collection to the Carnegie Museum in 1903, made front page news in the New York Times, and other papers across the country. In a letter to Andrew Carnegie, thanking him for allocating $25,000 for the purchase, an enormous sum for that time, Holland wrote, “We are never likely to have another such chance, and you have done a most splendid thing in securing it [the Bayet Collection] for our Museum of Paleontology.” That most splendid thing transpired, over a century ago, with just sixteen words:
“Carnegie Museum buys collection. Will pay cash price fixed by Krantz. If satisfactory, telegraph answer yes.”
Cable sent from Pittsburgh to Brussels on June 9th or 10th, 1903 offering to buy Baron Ernest Bayet’s fossil collection. “Krantz” refers to Friedrich Krantz of Bonn, Germany, a business man and fossil dealer who acted as Bayet’s negotiating agent.
Part 2 of this series highlights spectacular Krantz specimens within the Bayet collection.
Many thanks for the generous contributions of Ursula Müller-Krantz, Executive Director of Dr. F Krantz Rheinisches Mineraliaen Contor GmbH & Co., Marie Corrado, Carnegie Museum of Natural History Library Manager and Kelsea Collins, Carnegie Museum Library Cataloger. Continued gratitude to volunteer Lucien Schoenmakers’ ongoing effort to translate archival Bayet documents. Joann Wilson is an Interpreter in the Education Department at Carnegie Museum of Natural History and Albert Kollar is Collections Manager for the Section of Invertebrate Paleontology. Museum employees are encouraged to blog about their unique experiences and knowledge gained from working at the museum.

Uprooting Colonialism From the Fossil-Finding Field In 2019, Mohamad Bazzi, a doctoral student at Uppsala University in Sweden, launched an expedition to Tunisia in search of fossils. He and his colleagues traveled to the phosphate mines around the city of Gafsa, where 56 million-year-old rocks record a time of rapidly warming oceans and mass extinctions, particularly of apex predators like sharks. Mr. Bazzi made some distinctive choices for this paleontological expedition. For starters, his team hired Tunisians to help dig, rather than bringing students from his university. Mr. Bazzi and his colleagues also chose to reach out to the residents of Gafsa wherever possible, holding impromptu lectures on the area’s fossil history to interested onlookers. This was a contrast with the secretiveness of many paleontologists in the field, who might worry about their sites being raided for the fossil black market. The fossils the team collected from Gafsa are important for learning more about how animals adapted to the hothouse world of the Eocene, a period that may foretell what’s in store for the planet in coming years if carbon emissions don’t slow. But while Mr. Bazzi’s team removed the fossils from Tunisia, they did so under an agreement with local institutions that Mr. Bazzi himself insisted on: After he finished his research, the remains would be returned. Historically, these specimens are seldom returned, and locals may never see them again. But Mr. Bazzi and his colleagues are part of a movement among the next generation of paleontological researchers, one attempting to change scientific practices that descend directly from 19th century colonialism, which exploited native peoples and their natural histories. Over the last few decades, multiple countries have demanded the return of looted art, antiquities, cultural treasures and human remains from museum collections in North America and Europe. Countries such as Mongolia and Chile have likewise demanded the return of collected fossils, from tyrannosaur bones to the preserved remains of giant ground sloths. “There’s a consistent pattern with these specimens of high scientific or aesthetic value, where they’re taken out of the developing world and shipped abroad to be displayed and shown to a wider audience elsewhere,” Mr. Bazzi said. “There should be some balance so that local parties have a say in what happens to them.” Many countries with less money to spend on funding their own scientists are home to important fossil deposits that could drive major advances of our understanding of the prehistoric world. If the field of paleontology is to move forward, these researchers say, it’s important to figure out how to study specimens in these places without extending colonial legacies. That will take the development of a different approach to the field, more like the ones being tried by Mr. Bazzi and other scientists that rely less on extraction and more on collaboration with and the development of local institutions. While many cultures throughout human history have long traditions around collecting or studying fossil remains, the discipline of scientific paleontology — as well as the formation of modern natural history museums — arose in the 18th century, when European powers were actively colonizing large swaths of the globe. According to Emma Dunne, an Irish paleontologist at University of Birmingham in England, European scientists were part of a colonial network that sucked natural wealth — including fossils — into imperial capitals. In the 20th century, some countries pushed back. Brazil and Argentina provide government funding of paleontology. Those countries and others, such as Mongolia, established laws forbidding the export of fossils from within their borders. The two South American countries also mandate that foreign researchers work with local paleontologists for research on fossils found in the country. “You still do have non-Argentinian researchers working with local ones, for example,” said Nussaibah Raja-Schoob, a Mauritian paleontologist based at Germany’s University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. “But you definitely see that there is a bigger local influence.” Even in the aftermath of colonialism, however, fossils from across the globe still tend to end up in American and European museums. Some are collected through approved scientific expeditions. But because fossils are also traded privately, fossil-rich countries with fewer resources and legal protections often see interesting and potentially valuable finds put up for auction in Western markets. Questions about where fossils belong and who is best suited to work on them have sparked sharp controversies in recent years. In some cases, researchers have raised concerns about the ethics of working on such privately collected fossils — particularly those which may have been exported illegally. At the same time, paleontologists in Western countries have bristled at the rules required by countries like Brazil. In one case in 2015, David Martill, a paleobiologist at the University of Portsmouth in England, dismissed questions about his team’s lack of collaboration with Brazilian researchers on a specimen found there. “I mean, do you want me also to have a Black person on the team for ethnicity reasons, and a cripple and a woman, and maybe a homosexual too just for a bit of all round balance?” he said in an interview at the time with Herton Escobar, a Brazilian science journalist. Dr. Martill said in an interview in December that he chose his words poorly. But he said he remains opposed to laws that dictate where fossils go. In 2020, he was a co-author of a paper on another find exported from Brazil and described without a Brazilian co-author. “I do not think governments should dictate who works on fossils,” he said. “I think scientists should be able to choose who they work with.” These sorts of controversies are one example of the way the discipline’s colonial history lingers, Ms. Raja-Schoob says. But there are others. Much of global paleontology is still conducted in languages like English, German and French. And according to an ongoing research project by Ms. Raja-Schoob and Dr. Dunne, countries with higher G.D.P.s — places like the United States, France, Germany and China — tend to report more fossil data, in part because they have the money to invest in academic paleontology programs. Many institutions around the world have neither the tools nor enough government support for sophisticated studies of fossils. But that is something scientific institutions from wealthier countries can help with. “We have to ask why we’re bringing this knowledge to the centers, rather than spreading it out,” Dr. Dunne said. “We can work with things like 3-D scans of fossils, we can work with digital data sets. The problem obviously is getting funding for museums to do this for themselves.” Ms. Raja-Schoob said that academic funding could promote geology and paleontology in more countries. “Why not put that money into local people doing something?” she asked. “At the end of the day we are all going to be using that data. So why should they not also benefit?” While the fossil riches present in the rocks of North Africa and the Levant have long drawn fossil hunters and scientists, Mr. Bazzi said, the majority of fieldwork has resulted in fossils being exported to European or American institutions. Mr. Bazzi’s parents are from Lebanon, while his colleague Yara Haridy — a doctoral student at Berlin’s Museum für Naturkunde — was born in Egypt. Because of the lack of opportunities, neither can find steady academic work in paleontology in the Middle East. As part of their trip to Gafsa, both wanted to try to start building up paleontological resources instead of just removing them. That was part of what led Mr. Bazzi and Ms. Haridy — after many careful conversations with local participants over coffee and tea — to the ruins of a museum in the small mining town of Métlaoui. The museum had been burned down during the protests of the 2011 Jasmine Revolution that helped trigger the Arab Spring. It had not been restored, and on their third day in Tunisia, a mining engineer told them it might be worth visiting. Stepping carefully through the ruins, they found an unexpected wealth of fossil material: immense turtle shells, crocodile jawbones, dinosaur vertebrae and even ancient human remains, all scattered across dusty floors and charred rubble. The collection had to be salvaged, the team decided, but not taken out of the country. “Every other question we got was, ‘Oh, are you guys going to take this stuff?,’” Ms. Haridy said. “And we told them, no, it’s yours. It should stay here. It’s part of this region’s story.” Instead, they partnered with the people of Métlaoui to help them save the remains. Within a day, the town’s mayor and other community authorities had assembled local workers and students from Gafsa University. Mr. Bazzi’s team handed out gloves and masks and a stream of Métlaoui residents went to work pulling fossils from the ruins. “It was a pretty big operation,” Ms. Haridy said. “Everyone got really excited.” The team cataloged the bones before boxing and sending them to a government facility in Gafsa. The hope is that the museum remains will provide the nucleus for an ongoing paleontology program at Gafsa University; Mr. Bazzi has been helping to supervise interested students. One such student, Mohammed Messai, said that he didn’t know much about paleontology before meeting Mr. Bazzi, but that he’s now made identifying the fossils recovered from the museum part of the research for his master’s degree in science. It’s important for paleontologists to build genuine partnerships with local researchers, Ms. Haridy said. Not only does this create community engagement and prompt people to regard fossils as worth protecting, it also helps ensure that specimens are properly studied when they are returned to their country of origin. “There’s this problem where even if a country demands fossils back, like Egypt did for a long time, a lot of the paleontological knowledge doesn’t necessarily return with it,” she said. Without investing in independent paleontology programs in the countries in question, fossils can end up “consigned to a dusty room, where nobody knows what to do with it.” But efforts to create more inclusive and distributed paleontological networks face considerable headwinds. “Funders don’t necessarily put any emphasis on the ethical side of the research,” Dr. Dunne said. “We do rely a lot on other countries for their data. Fossils are worldwide, they’re global, they don’t respect political boundaries. But we should be identifying these patterns of colonial bias in our research and stopping them.” To some extent, the presence of these conversations is itself a sign of change. “When I began paleontology some 45 years ago these issues were of no concern,” Dr. Martill said. “Today, they seem to be dominating paleontological discussions. Perhaps it is me who is now out of touch.” He added that, “a fantastic new generation of paleontologists emerging and they are flexing their muscles and demanding different things.” For now, Mr. Bazzi’s team hopes to drive funding toward local paleontology in Tunisia. “Ideally, the Tunisian government would just believe these people on their own and agree that their fossils are important and worthy of preservation, and is of international interest,” Ms. Haridy said. “But they tend to get interested once scientists are actually actively trying to visit and actively trying to work with people.” “You now have local people starting to drive this themselves,” Mr. Bazzi said. “Eventually there will be no need for others to come and do it.” Source link Orbem News #Colonialism #field #FossilFinding #Uprooting

Surging CT Scan Procedures to Uplift Market During Pandemic
The application of computed tomography in Covid-19 management is expected to promote the growth of the market. Computed tomography has evolved as an essential tool in managing and diagnosis of covid-19 patients. The rising number of CT scanners can offer favorable conditions for the market during coronavirus. However, the declined number of oncology, and cardiology procedures can reduce demand for computed tomography systems, which, in turn, will dampen the growth of the market. Besides, the declined sales recorded by key companies will further retard the expansion of the market. For instance, GE Healthcare, one of the major players in the global market, registered a 9% decline in Q3 ended September 2020 as compared to Q3 2019, due to the lower equipment demand during the period.

Emmy Noether
Who: Amalie Emmy Noether
What: Mathematician and Scientist (physicist)
Where: German-Jewish (active mostly in Germany and the US)
When: March 23, 1882 - April 14, 1935
(Image Description: a photo of Noether from 1932. She is a heavy set woman with a huge smile. She is pale and wears round glasses. She is on a boat or ship. She has a roundish face and heavily lidded eyes and full lips. Her hair is medium darkness and pulled back out of her face and forehead. She is wearing a dark dress with a flower on it. End ID.)
Noether is often described as "the most important woman in mathematics" and is one of the most key figures in the studies of abstract algebra and theoretical physics. She radically changed the entire study of physics and founded abstract algebra, indeed Einstein owes a lot to her an knew it, her work laid the groundwork for the Theory of Relativity. Einstein called her "the most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced since the higher education of women began."
She is the discoverer of Noether's Theorem, which she proved in 1915, in physics it states and explains the connection between symmetry and conservation. Additionally she developed theories around rings, number fields, and algebras, contributing greatly to them. Due to work in and use of the ascending chain condition objects satisfying it are now called Noetherian in her honor. Also bearing her name is the Lasker-Noether Theorem (primary decomposition). She united the representation theory of groups and the theory of modules and ideals. She also contributed to hypercomplex numbers, algebraic topology, Galois Theory, isomorphism theorems, and many other far reaching fields. I apologize for not going into greater detail about most of these mathematicians. I do not get math/physics at all.
As a teacher she trained many great students who referred to themselves as "Noether's Boys." These included Hans Fitting, Werner Weber, Chiungtze C. Tsen, and Jacob Levitzki, who all became noted mathematicians in their own rights. She worked with many mathematical greats including David Hilbert, Hermann Weyl, Emanuel Lasker, and Albert Einstein, contributing to their work, and was highly respected even in her own era when women were often discouraged from academia.
She is remembered today in many different ways outside of the theories that bare her name. She has a moon crater and an asteroid named after her. Likewise in her hometown of Erlangen a street and a school bare her name. There is the Emmy Noether Institute for Mathematics (part of Bar-Ilan University, founded by the university, the Minerva Foundation, and the German government), Emmy Noether Visiting Fellowships (at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics), Emmy Noether Programme operated by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Emmy Noether Distinction for Women in Physics is given by The European Physical Society, and the annual Noether Lecture held by the Association for Women in Mathematics.
(Just a note because of her ethnicity, nationality, and the time of her death. She was not killed by the Nazis. She fled the country for the US after Jews were thrown out of and barred from German universities in 1933, before Kristallnacht. She died of complications from surgery for uterine tumors, unrelated to Nazis).
(Image description: Noether and many of her colleagues and students near where she taught at Göttingen in 1933. From left to right: Ernst Witt, Paul Bernays, Helene Weyl [writer and translator], Hermann Weyl, Fritz Joachim Weyl, Emil Artin, Emmy Noether, Ernst Knauf, [Unknown], Chiungtze C. Tsen, Erna Bannow [mathematician])
Probable Orientation: Aroace
She was extremely popular in her field and a central figure among them and was not particularly private. Indeed she was notably friendly, social, and open. Still she is not documented to have ever had a sexual or romantic relationship or even interest. She never married, she generally lived alone, and she never had children. She expressed no regrets about it and no interest in romance or sex.
(Image description: March 12, 1918, a letter to Felix Klein, professor of mathematics in Göttingen on the topic of her research into math and reactions. The Edelstein Collection, The National Library [caption from Hadar Ben-Yehuda] my addition: it is written in cursive on unlined yellowing paper using dark ink.)
