Klaus Mikaelson + Roselyn
I had a dream after last nights episode. Which left me in tears.
That I turned myself... somehow... late at night whilst I was working in my studio on the final project.
I was working on carving something into layers of set paint. The chisel got stuck and it ran into my hand slicing through. I had nothing around and I was covered in dried acrylic paint specs, so I had to suck on the wound.
But because of that, I turned myself.
I didn’t notice at first, I had barely 3 weeks left before I finished college, with human blood still coursing through my veins, I was still strong and focused. able to go about my life. I had planned to move to Seattle after I graduated.
To go join an artist group in downtown, study for a year and see where things lead me. But as the weeks went on and the human blood slowly left my body, the urges and control got harder to contain. I was out one night, with friends when the alcohol must have diluted my consciousness enough that whilst we were on the floor packed and surrounded by strangers, lights strobing and music pulsing, I took my first bite into some guys neck.
It felt so good, like numbing a craving but as the blood reached beyond my lips it was like a searing pain.
I threw up, spitting it out. I came to learn that all human blood was like acid to me.
As time went on I had to leave, my mind couldn't control living around so many people. In such a hungry, weak and uncontrollable state. Eventually, someone would have noticed and I could never let that happen.
I got on the plane and left days after my graduations. I couldn't bear it any longer.
I spent years in Seattle, Portland, all along the top end of the east coast.
I was half desecrated as I would starve myself. Only able to drink small portions every so often.
I lived in total agony. Unable to die as I was no longer alive. But never able to satisfy the carnal instinct.
Life became torture. My hands and feet in a half state of desecration and my body weak. Like living in a constant state of withdrawal.
I was able to find small glimmers of stories, of this family who might be like me. from the people I met as I traveled through the national forests and cities. New Orleans seemed the place to go. Where the stories were leading me.
So I compulsed my way to New Orleans. It took so much of me, by the time I made it the desecration was creeping further than ever before. I needed to feed. Who knew how long it would take till I would find this family. I found my way to a bar hoping to find some drunk to lure in and bite, the alcohol helped to dilute the blood enough, so I could keep it down. also gave it a good kick, if you know what I mean.
I barely made it to the door, the desecration was so far up my legs and arms. I didn’t know how much left I had, the longer I go without a drink the less my compulsion worked. I stumbled into the bar and scanned the room hoping for a drunk college girl or some sad lonely guy I could get close enough too.
My head spun as I staggered over every step, dragging my stone heavy feet along the timber floor towards the bar. I stumbled and grabbed at the bar, hoping for some support. The bartender hedged closer and slowly lowered her head to mine as I rested my head on the bar.
“You need to leave, this bar is already taken by another of your kind. Go find someplace else to feed” my eyebrows pinched together. Another? what other. I knew only of myself. “ Too late dear. Hope your stong, you're going to need it to get through whatever he’s going to do to you.” I saw her move away and wondering back to the other end of the bar. Moments later I felt the sharp pang as claws dung into my spin. If I had any energy left I would scream, but didn't. So I just succumbed to the pain, letting the claws break through my nerves as I went into the darkness.
I slowly woke. eyes wincing to the light as I adjusted to the shadow lit room. I felt my hands, the tingling sensation of wiggling my finger. I can't remember the last time I could feel my fingers. Years perhaps?
I rushed up, my eyes jumped around as I took in the old elegant yet shabby room. It matched much of what I had seen whilst I researched New Orleans. A large canopy bed facing a large window, large chest of drawers, a fireplace, chandelier and writing desk. I had been placed on an antique looking daybed. Books and papers littered the shelves and in the corner a mirror. I darted to it, taking in my own reflection. My face no longer had the stone tinge to it, nor veins, I looked healthy. My hands were pinkish and my arms no longer bony. I had obviously fed. I can’t remember but perhaps whilst I had passed out whoever put me here gave me some blood.
I saw the blood stain on my shirt and pants, the holes ripped into them. Signing I went to the dresser and searched for a top or jumper of some kind to change into. I found a gray henley top. It was a little big so it fitted me rather like an oversized jumper, but at least it was clean.
I quickly changed into it and tossed my bloody and ripped clothes onto the bed and headed for the door. But it wouldn’t open. I tried again and again and again but it wouldn't budge, even with my strength it wouldn’t open. I tried the windows, and the glass would not shatter.
“Whoever put me here does not want me to leave apparently...” I mumbled to myself. Huffing I looked back at the room, hoping for something. Perhaps to let me know who this person was. Obviously, they were a man. taller than me, and very old-fashioned by the looks of his room. Antiquette old furniture, books no tv or anything modern. Yet it felt comfortable. Perhaps over time I didn't scare so easy or get frightened by the concept of the unknown. After living like I have, alone for almost 3 years now, on the move and searching for answers to questions I didn't even know.
I waited and watched as the sun moved through the sky, the only thing I really had to measure the time as there were no clocks in this room. I found a sketchbook in the draws and ink and pencils on the desk, I hadn’t been able to draw as my hands had been desecrated. So I passed the time by sketching the room, my reflection, the view from the windows. I found a hidden record player with vinyl records of classical and jazzier era music. I spent all afternoon sketching and changing the vinyls. Almost in a lull, enjoying the sunlight. As the sun went down I light up the fireplace and took a book from the shelf. ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ by Oscar Wild, “let's start with this one.” I whispered to myself as I started to read the book by the firelight. The story gripping my attention till the moon was descending the sky.
I spent the next several days like this. If this was a cage, how I dreamed of being forever captured, never the less every day I tried to open the door or smash through the window, to no success. I finished all the paper in the room, the logs all burnt and I had finished multiple books. However, by the last few days, my hands had started to return to stone, their feelings lost touch. I spent the most part of my days now in the bed with a book.
The door swung open and scared me to my core. Suddenly this room was no longer comfortable, nor my dream but like a crushing cage with no escape. My head snapped towards the open door, and every muscle tensing ready for whatever walked in.
I smelt them first. A mix of blood and cologne. Then he entered, a mixture of confidence that could only come from never being threatened or scared. Something I hadn’t experienced in a long, long time.
He was tall, almost 6 foot. He has light brown hair and stern face, and if I wasn't petrified I’d even say attractive. He stopped just past the entry and looked at the room, finding me, like a cowardly animal on the bed. My knees were drawn up and my hands clenching the sheets by my side.
“There you are love” his British accent cutting through room and vinyl I had playing, “well haven’t you made your self at home” he tilted his head a little “Sergei Rachmaninoff...” nodding a little as he said this. Every word seemed calculated and chosen.
He walked slowly across the room away from me, picking up the loose leaf papers I had drawn on. “You quite good. I appreciate your talents. Yet staying alive doesn’t seem to be one of them.” Within the span of his last words, he was by the bed and grabbing my hand, and in doing so my breath hitching in my throat. “I must say I’ve never seen someone desecrate quite as fast as you.”
I snatched my hand back. “It’s always been like that..” I trail off, trying to muster as much confidence I had.
“Niklaus. Mikaelson.” He looked straight at me, almost challenging me. seeing how I’d react like it was his favorite game.
I was not going to look away. “Is that meant to mean something to me?”
He chuckled at my response and grinned. “Well, I guess not. Though I never quite caught yours?”
“Roselyn... Thank-you, I should say. For helping me.” I softly say, looking away, before looking back as a slight grin appears on his face.
He suddenly disappeared and walked back in with a female trailing behind compulsed. “Here. You're looking a little pale dear.” He said gesturing to the woman. She walked straight in and sat down at the edge of the bed clearing her neck for me.
Fear. There it is again. I felt the fang appear and the urge again.
“I can’t,” I say looking away. The anguish in the pit of my stomach coming back.
“I promise, not poisoned. Now be a dear, take my gift.” The last part wasn't a request it was almost like a threat.
“You don’t understand.” I sigh. “I can’t drink human blood”
“Don’t tell me your one of those insufferable squirrel biters.” In a beat he was next to me staring into my eyes. “Drink” he compulsed me.
I sank my teeth into the woman and started to suck the blood and like always it was like acid. I pushed her away as screamed in agony spewing the blood up again. As I looked up through tears. His face was a mix of fascination and pity.
“Well, love. What have you done” His eyes a little more tender than before.
“I. Can’t. Drink. Human. Blood. It's like acid. Always has been.” I tried to say as stern as I could between the pain.
“Tell me what happened. Now.” He said. waving the woman off and took her place on the edge of the bed.
I looked at him. Debating whether to tell him. But if I didn’t he would have probably just put me under compulsion and compel it out of me.
“I turned. Myself. I don't know how, but I did and every time I feed or drink human blood or any blood... It's like drinking acid. It burns and kills me inside.” I say thinking back through the past 4 excruciating years.
“A vampire that can’t drink blood. How ironic. New, I admit that. Thousands of years and nature still has a sense of humor.” he said brushing a piece of hair off my face and looking directly at me.
Laughing a little I nod agreeing with him. “That's why I'm so desecrated.”
He paused for while. “Come with me,” he said taking my hand and pulling me up off the bed.
Pausing as he took in what I was in and looked at my body, again with a grin on his face. “As much as I like you in my top I think we should find you some clothes first.”
I had borrowed Rebekas’ clothes. A dress and jacket as that was the easiest thing to fit into. Whilst I changed, Klaus went into what seemed to be the foyer of the mansion. As I walked through the place I found how big this place was and yet how empty it was, no one seemed to be around. I joined Klaus in the courtyard area. He had a lady with him. She seeemed tense and pissed off.
“Ah you found us. Rose, this a witch. She’s here to help.” He told me, as he stepped aside and let me come more towards the witch.
“Hi..” I gave a tentative smile. She wasn’t the most welcoming.
She grabbed my hand. and started chanting. I tried to pull away and snatch my hand back. “Don’t. I’m trying to get a reading.” She almost hissed at me.
I looked at Klaus who was frowning but he hadn’t moved. So I stopped and took a deep breath, Her hand glowed where her hand met my skin.
“You’re not a vampire. Not in full. It’s like you never turned. I can feel your coldness and I can sense that you're not human. But you're also not fully a vampire. I can tell that.” She said. Looking directly at me.
“Well, now isn't this exciting,” Klaus said breaking the intense stare she had on me. “You’re not a vampire. But you’re not a Human. Is there a word for that?”
“No.” She sounded almost warningly. Like a new virus had just been discovered.
“What do I do? I asked.
“I don’t know. Why don’t you take a bite out of him that normally works for most supernatural problems around here.” she quipped, as Klaus gave a cold chuckle.
“Okay, I’ve had enough of this. Leave and forget what you sore and did here.” Klaus said as he compulsed her. She nodded and turned and walked out of the courtyard. “Helps when they aren't under vervain.” He quipped.
I felt the desecration climb a little further up my legs and hands. Their movement seizing up, and I gave out a little cry.
Klaus came straight to me and held my arms either side looking at me, “Let's get you to bed love. You seem to need to lie down.” He picked me up and within seconds we were back in his room and he was helping me to sit down.
“What did she mean when she said your blood seems to fix everything supernatural?” I asked softly.
“That’s just one of the perks of being the first hybrid dear.” he returned, answering my question.
My eyebrows knitted together. “Hybrid?”
He chuckled “Original were-wolf and Vampire. Rather interesting mix to be quite honest with you.” A werewolf? Those excist? I was taken aback. I knew what I was existed... I always wondered.
I reached up and touched his face. Looking deeper into his eyes, which he had shut as my palm touched his cheek. “Did it hurt?”
This time it was his eyebrows that knitted together as his face went from surprise to happy to a stern look. “Not anymore.’ He responded and I gave him a soft smile.
We stayed like that for a moment, he looked like he was thinking. Before he rolled up the sleeve of his dark henley top and extended his arm towards me. "Here." I looked at him puzzled. before I could open my mouth he spoke again. "Drink. It might help and if not then at least we can rule it out. So please.." he gestured again.
I sat up and lightly grabbed his arm, giving a final look towards him for reassurance. I let my fangs out and I felt the urge rush through my body. I slowly sank my teeth into his arm and began to drink.
The warm liquid was like a morphine dose mixed with an adrenalin rush, soothing and addictive simultaneously. The more I drank the more I needed it. I felt every part of my body. The sensation was like nothing I had ever experienced. I heard him grown as I drank like he too was somehow feeling it too. I had to stop though. I had to. I gripped his arm a little tighter as I tried to pull myself away. His low grown again snapping me out of my trance as I removed my fangs from his arm and sucked the last few drops before I felt the small punctures heal beneath my tongue.
Like I was coming back into reality, I looked up at Klaus. He was grinning and chuckling as he rolled back down his top. For the first time, I was able to drink. Properly drink without the pain and excruciating agony. I too started to smile and laugh.
"Thank-you," I said softly, as I felt tears escape. I enclosed him in a hug. He was stiff and taken aback but soon tightened his arms around my waist. "Thank-you", I whispered again into his ear as I continued to embrace him. He chuckled lightly. "it was nothing at all, love".
I pulled back still brimming with joy. "I've never felt that way. It was intoxicating. Is it always like that?" I asked.
Chuckling again he said, but a little deeper this time, " Yes."

Making big changes to a rental property isn’t usually possible, but that doesn’t mean you can’t inject your unique personality into the space. The Brisbane home of talented ceramicist Nicolette Johnson (who won the Handcrafted category in our Design Awards last year!) and web designer Tom Dawson is proof of just that.
Nicolette and Tom moved into this Queenslander cottage four and a half years ago. After years of apartment living (you can see our feature on their prior home here!), the couple were seeking more space for Nicolette to expand her ceramics business, which back then was only in its infancy. This home not only afforded the pair more space, but a more tranquil setting among the Bardon treetops. ‘Cockatoos, king parrots and lorikeets visit often,’ says Nicolette. ‘We also have the occasional python sighting, which is always a thrill.’
In her own art practice, Nicolette loves working with a brown palette, but has become somewhat of a colour convert in this home. ‘I have strived to introduce more bright tones into our space using things like art and textiles,’ she says. ‘Although admittedly my heart still belongs to brown!’
Every space contains a treasure trove of mostly vintage items, plus some chain store finds, and plenty of art by local makers. ‘I love anything vintage and enjoy mixing pieces from different places and eras, and getting everything to converse nicely,’ says Nicolette. A particular highlight is the stunning artwork ‘Australian Bee Eater’ by Katie Nalgood, that Nicolette and Tom purchased from our Different Sorta Colour exhibition with Spinifex Hill Studio earlier this year, which has pride of place at the head of the dining table! (Thanks so much guys!)
While there’s something to marvel at in every room of this house, the styling is very purposeful and considered, in order to avoid a ‘cluttered’ feeling. ‘The rooms aren’t huge, so orienting furniture to suit the needs of the room while also allowing for flow has been tricky!’ Nicolette says. ‘It’s really comfortable as it is now, so I think we managed it in the end.’
Without so much as picking up a paintbrush, Nicolette and Tom have successfully created a sophisticated home that distinctly captures who they are.
Nicolette’s next show of exquisite ceramics opens at Sophie Gannon Gallery on November 4th!

Building a duckery
Recently, we incubated some of our duck eggs, because who can resist adorable little quackers?
Once we had all the quacking madness, we realized they needed a home separate from their parents. Enjoying a challenge and being frugal, we utilized things around our wee farm to build them a new space. We collect pallets from time to time and had a stash of old plywood stored from a roof renovation. Generally, we buy the hardware like hinges or latches, or reuse some other bits and pieces.
Beach Cabin Style
On this occasion, we decided to build the duck house off the ground so all the poultry friends had an extra shady spot to lounge in.
The ducks immediately let us know they approved of this idea.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could just turn your head around & rest it on your back to take a nap?
Ground Floor
The plywood is 8’ x 4’ & attached to 2 pallets that were about 4’ x 4’ each. Each corner was supported with a section of 4”x 4” timber, they were about 18” tall. These have 2”x 4” timbers in between for added stability. This thing ain’t going nowhere.
Everything was level with the help of random cinder blocks, cement bricks, and dirt and stones and stuff. Nothing is level on this property. It is good exercise to wander, only good thing I can say.
Additional Security
The chicken yard (which also encompasses ducks and turkeys now) has a Premier One poultry net electric fence surrounding it. So, each side is about 50’ long to contain the critters away from our garden in the summer time, but also protect them from foxes and raccoons and dogs and whatever else might choose to visit. We even had a bear appear a couple years ago, but it passed by the chicken house and just attacked our bird seed feeder, which incidentally is only a few feet from our actual human house. Fun story, no injuries, but the bird feeder has since moved further away from our back door.
Protect your hard work
We have a 5 gallon bucket of wood stain in a cedar tone that most projects get a nice slather with. It was one of those “accidental paints” at Lowe’s that we acquired at a deep discount, which is kinda the best way to make paint color choices. Good stuff, on sale, get it. So, we kinda have a Texas Longhorn feel about the place.
Framing
Next up are walls, which are 4 foot sections on back and sides, connected with 2” x 4” timbers used to frame the house.
We had a couple 2” x 6” timbers that we used for the front part of the frame, about 6’ tall, so that the front has a higher slope down to the back.
We use our Ryobi tools a lot, this set included a drill and saw and has been going strong since 2007 and has had many new Ryobi tools and batteries added over the years.
Fancy Linoleum
The easiest way to clean out these duck and chicken houses is to have a layer of linoleum or vinyl that is secured to the walls. It is easy to sweep out or scoop out the bedding and waste or even to hose it out if necessary. We just secure the sides with a staple gun and so far, have been happy with the results. It is great if you can find clearance pieces at the resale shops or habitat for humanity kind of places. Since we purchased this during the Covid-19 pandemic, I just ordered this through Lowe’s, “Royelle 12-ft W x Cut-to-Length Rock Hill Stone Look High-Gloss Finish”. It is a pretty cheap (was the cheapest option) and crappy product but it does the job, all that matters now.
Roof
Rather than just sticking an old piece of plywood on top, we decided to protect our hard work. We got a couple pieces of “Ondura 4-ft x 6.58-ft Corrugated Asphalt Roof Panel” with the corresponding nails from Lowe’s. We got brown to go with the ‘wood theme’ I guess we were creating on this build.
Ventilation
Because this is for the ducks, we leave gaps at the top for ventilation. Ducks produce a lot of wet poop and the ammonia levels would be too great if you close them in. Extra straw in the winter keeps them cozy and warm & they all huddle together, so we don’t worry about cold nights.
Differences in Ducks & Chickens
It is not recommended to have water or feed bowls in with ducks as they will only make a huge mess overnight with them. These ducklings were only a few weeks old, and it was early spring, so we provided a heat lamp at night and gave them a waterer to keep them happy and safe til morning.
Ducks don’t require a nest box like chickens, so there’s no point in building them a special thing. They just lay an egg where it pleases them. Don’t waste your time trying to teach a duck. Sometimes they lay it at night, sometimes they drop it as they wander through the yard.
End Result
Now we have a walk way for the ducks to go to bed in the evening. Each door is just a 4’ plywood panel with a 7.36-in Steel-Painted Gate Latch on each door, along with some nice heavy hinges.
We keep straw in a big plastic tote to refill the duck bed, along with a shovel and a curtain where all the bedding gets tossed onto & then put in compost or the garden or whatever. What do you think, would you have done anything different?

New Construction Home Design Ideas
Featuring any home built by Mike Stevens Homes is always exciting. I have noticed that you guys really liked the house tours I have previously shared with you and it’s easy to see why. This family-oriented building company is always building quality homes featuring the latest trends, and I am so grateful that they are always willing to share all sources, so you, my loyal readers, can get all insights so even if you don’t live in Tennessee and can’t have your home built by them, at least you can feel inspired by their work and get a similar look.
Here, the builder shares more details about this newly-completed project:
“Our clients wanted to build a modern farmhouse, but with a bit more refined and upscale finishes than what is usually found in this architectural style. The floor plan of the home is open concept and all the spaces flow into one another providing an intimate and warm feeling throughout. With 10 foot ceilings on the main floor, allowing for large windows & 8′ doors, as well as a double sided fireplace to emphasize the relationship between the interior and exterior, it permits the space to feel airy, grand and light-filled. The interior finishes are calming and subdued, but are warmed up with rich gold tones (in the lighting and plumbing fixtures) and warm tones in the stains. There are beams and wood accents scattered through the entire home to add some rustication to the otherwise elegant finishes, providing an interesting juxtaposition of styles and textures to add character.”
Make sure to share this post with someone you know that’s planning on building a new home because this house tour truly covers all the details of this new construction, from flooring choices to appliances!

Pavlina Williams transforms mid-century dome house with angular windows
A dome-shaped house in Palm Springs has undergone renovation work by its owner, Los Angeles-based architect Pavlina Williams, who added new windows and created open-plan interiors.
Williams renovated her home from the inside-out, acting as the general contractor while gutting the interiors, and ripping down walls to create a light-filled space inside.
She designed new custom-made windows to surround the dome in a geometric arrangement and form a focal point of the building.
"The most challenging aspect was to install all the trapezoid and triangular windows in the dome," said Williams, who is a practising architect at R & A. "There were just two tiny windows when we bought the house. We cut out all the openings and reinforced the wood framing and got custom windows from Home Depot."
Built in 1956, the Palm Springs Dome House comprises a half-globe portion and a rectangular section. Brown asphalt roof shingles cover the rounded exterior, with other portions made up of glass and light brickwork.
"It was originally designed and built by the previous owner, who was a chemical engineer from Torrance, California," said Williams, who also lists the place on Airbnb. "He ordered the dome as a kit and had local carpenters assemble it. They started to build the house in the 1950s, and then added the dome in the 1970s."
The location of the mid-century house allows for 360-degree views of the surroundings, including Joshua Tree and Coachella Valley, as well as a collection of wind turbines.
Originally, the home had a gridded layout of small rooms that were lined in carpet and vinyl linoleum. The residence had barely any windows, blocking the panoramic desert vista.
Williams updated the flooring to polished concrete and incorporated white surfaces and metal in her redesign. A new spiral stainless-steel staircase by Fontanot leads up to a lofted section in the glazed atrium.
The new windows are best appreciated from a sitting room on the ground floor, where domed construction is expressed across the ceiling, which reaches 26 feet (eight metres) at its highest point.
White cabinetry, an exposed brick wall that acts as a backsplash and an overhead timber beam all feature in the kitchen.
Palm Springs Dome House also contains three bedrooms and three baths, with a sleeping area and bath in its lofted portion.
Williams also selected all of the furnishings t0 include an assortment of mid-century chairs alongside other contemporary pieces.
A series of wooden Vortex dining chairs with V-shaped backs are interspersed throughout – around a large round dining table, beside another glass table, and next to a hightop kitchen island.
Near the staircase is a caramel leather Wassily Chair, also known as the Model B3 chair, designed by Hungarian designer Marcel Breuer in 1926. The chair is situated alongside a small table, potted cacti, and a pod-like bookshelf.
A pair of colourful Acapulco Papasan chairs in the sitting room are positioned on either side of a new built-in fireplace. Upstairs, a pair of lightwood seats takes cues from the mid-century slatted chairs by Arthur Umanoff.
A small ground-floor office with an exposed brick wall also features modernist furniture, like an Eames Molded Plastic Armchair Rocker in white, which is repeated in bright green upstairs.
Sliding glass doors open to a patio with an outdoor dining area. The garden is landscaped with tall cacti, boulders and stepping stones.
Attached to the side of the house is a smaller white geodesic dome that currently houses a fibreglass jacuzzi. "We are planning to rebuild the white dome in the same shape and make it an additional bedroom, with a round bed in the middle and several skylights right overhead," said Williams.
During the 1970s, dome houses became popular in the American Southwest, as part of a back-to-the-land movement that swept across the country during the era.
Williams' residence is among Palm Springs' substantial collection of modernist buildings, which includes the Kaufmann House by Richard Neutra and the concrete-domed Elrod House by John Lautner.

Treguier and a dusk departure
Tue 15 Aug 17
A grey morning, and after a more adequate night’s sleep, I forced myself to go for a pre-breakfast run, through a market being set up on the quayside, across a modern road bridge and then following an undulating track downstream between trees and across cultivated fields. The showers were pretty functional, but I felt so much better sitting down to breakfast having had some exercise.
The clouds had lifted a little, but the morning was still overcast when I set out to explore ashore. The market had got up to cruising altitude, a wonderfully eclectic mix of household items, glassware, second hand books, old vinyl, china and jewellery. I followed another path up towards the cathedral, lined on one side by timbered houses, and the other by more market stalls.
Sitting in the main square, I was passed by a group of girl guides, and decided on a whim to follow them into the cathedral. It was packed full, with no spare seats in any of the aisles, so I perched on the stone step at the foot of a pillar, which afforded an excellent view of the altar, just as the priests completed the first chant.
Today was the feast of the assumption, which probably accounted for the high attendance. I looked around at the tall stone columns, stained glass and painted ceilings as the singing echoed around. A couple of cream-robed altar boys stood with candles almost as tall as they were, and a lanky teenager swung a censure to fill the air with heady incense, before the readings and sermon.
A family with a tiny baby gathered around a portable font for a baptism ceremony, the prayers echoed by the assembled multitude. The priest walked around the aisles with the holy water and a very leafy branch, swishing generous amounts of holy droplets into the crowds.
Next was blessing the sacrament to prepare for communion, a collection, and then the sign of peace. I was quite touched when the French people either side of me reached across to shake hands and embrace, although I was obviously a tourist, with my camera bag.
The priests at the altar administered their own communion, drinking a generous slug of wine rather than a tiny sip! As the procession for communion began, I slipped out, and wandered the streets for several minutes, returning to the main square just as the procession approached the cathedral, headed by flag bearers, a statue of Mary on a small bier, and a couple of women with lacy Breton headdresses, all intoning French and Latin chants.
Returning to the marina, Pegasus had been joined by another British traditional boat, Leader, an 1895 sailing trawler. While we ate lunch on deck, the sky cleared, and that afternoon I continued exploring the town in blazing sunshine, discovering more medieval buildings, the calm cathedral cloisters, quiet art galleries and finishing with a caramel ice cream and café crème in the main square.
At about nine pm, after a relaxed dinner, we made the boat ready for the Channel crossing, putting on layers that seemed excessive in the Breton sunshine. Craig had made a “rolling road” of the pilotage for me, with all the light characteristics written in sequence, starboard to the right of the page, port to the left. My task was to cross them off as we passed each one and brief the spotters on the next buoy to look out for.
The channel twisted as we followed the river in the twilight, egrets hunting on the mud banks, boats quietly dried out, thick green foliage up to the high water mark, and dour, almost Scottish-looking grey stone houses tucked in among the trees. We counted down about a dozen lateral marks, and towards the end the lights were starting to flash, although we could still see well in the dusk.
Out at the mouth of the river, dark silhouettes of rocks showed against the pale purple blush of the last gasp of sunset, and it was so quiet I could hear the seabird cries across the flat water. Then it was fully dark, and we were reliant on the different light patterns to know our position. Soon we were close to the La Corne lighthouse, which had a sector light so we had to stay in the white section and not stray into the red or the green. We passed the lighthouse itself within just two boat lengths, an ominous dark tower. Heading for the next mark, the white sector light behind us cast a bright path on the black sea.
Next we were looking for leading lights to create a transit to find the channel to pass between the rocks. I spotted the lower white, occluding light, but the matching red light was elusive, and I was foxed a couple of times by car headlights. But then it appeared, we swung onto the transit and were on the last channel out to clear sea.
By now it was 11pm and I was feeling a bit cold. I was back on watch at 1am, so shivered my way down below to my bunk. As we were still motoring and the sea was flat, it was relatively easy to get to sleep, although I didn’t bother taking my boots off.
